Abstract:This letter describes a multilayer turbo space-time coding scheme. Based on a carefully designed power allocation strategy, performance reasonably close to the theoretical limits can be achieved at a rate of two bits per channel use with very low complexity.

Abstract:We consider a class of turbo codes with a band structured interleaver, such that the interleaving (and thus deinterleaving) is done within a window. This ensures that the extrinsic information for each symbol is generated from symbols within a window, allowing the processing of large message blocks with a sliding window decoder. This provides flexibility in terms of decoding latency and also makes parallel decoding with high-throughput possible.
A Quasi-Random Approach to Space-Time Codes

Abstract:This paper presents a quasi-random approach to space-time (ST) codes. The basic principle is to transmit randomly interleaved versions of forward error correction (FEC)-coded sequences simultaneously from all antennas in a multilayer structure. This is conceptually simple, yet still very effective. It is also flexible regarding the transmission rate, antenna numbers, and channel conditions (e.g., with intersymbol interference). It provides a unified solution to various applications where the traditional ST codes may encounter difficulties. We outline turbo-type iterative joint detection and equalization algorithms with complexity (per FEC-coded bit) growing linearly with the transmit antenna number and independently of the layer number. We develop a signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) evolution technique and a bounding technique to assess the performance of the proposed code in fixed and quasi-static fading channels, respectively. These performance assessment techniques are very simple and reasonably accurate. Using these techniques as a searching tool, efficient power allocation strategies are examined, which can greatly enhance the system performance. Simulation results show that the proposed code can achieve near-capacity performance with both low and high rates at low decoding complexity.

Abstract:This paper describes a novel stopping criterion for duo-binary turbo codes. The correlation between the two bit-level extrinsic information increased as the performance improved by the iterative decoding. In this way, the new method reflects a more reasonable solution for symbol-level decoding of duo-binary turbo codes. Simulation results showed that the proposal criterion was able to reduce the average iterative decoding number with a good error performance as compared to conventional criteria.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a class of low-rate codes constructed from Hadamard code arrays. A recursive encoding principle is employed to introduce an interleaving gain. Very simple trellis codes with only two or four states are sufficient for this purpose, and the decoding cost involved in the trellis part is typically negligible. Both simulation and analytical results are provided to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme is of theoretical interest as it can achieve performance of BER=10-5 at Eb/N0≈-1.2dB (only about 0.4 dB away from the ultimate low-rate Shannon limit) with an information block size of 65534. To the authors' knowledge, this is the best result achieved to date with respect to the ultimate Shannon limit. With regard to practical issues, the decoding complexity of the proposed code is considerably lower than that of existing low-rate turbo-type codes with comparable performance.

Abstract:In order to promote the reliability and efficiency of transport block (TB)-based transmission, we propose a new class of spatially coupled Polarization-Adjusted Convolutional (PAC) coding scheme in this paper. In the proposed scheme, several consecutive code blocks (CBs) in each TB are coupled by the register states at the end of the encoding of each CB, and a depth-first successive-cancellation list (SCL)-based decoder is used for decoding. The proposed spatially coupled PAC codes introduce little coding complexity at the encoding side, and the coupling procedure is able to significantly mitigate the TB error rate (TBER), which are validated by extensive simulation results.

Abstract:This paper presents a family of space-time codes employing interleavers to separate signals form different antennas. Noticeable performance improvement has been observed compared with existing schemes. An interactive detection algorithm is derived. The complexity involved is very low, and increases only linearly with the number of transmit antennas.

Abstract:As it developed,the performance of Turbo decoding can be near the Shannon limit,Turbo codes is being used in all kinds of field.Turbo product code(TPC) is being used in satellite communication and present diversification structure.The paper briefly introduces the coding and decoding principles of Turbo product code at first,analyses the code structure of several special code rates of Turbo product code in intestate,provides decoding algorithm and process which are easy to be realized,and simulates and evaluates the effects of iterative decoding at last.The result of emulation has proven that when signal-to-noise ratio is 6 dB,the bit error rate of algebraic decoded data can be reduced to be around 10-7 after 4 iterations,and decoded data can meet the need of communication reconnaissance and analysis.

Abstract:The polar codes are proven to be capacity-achieving and are shown to have equivalent or even better finite-length performance than the turbo/LDPC codes under some improved decoding algorithms over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Polar coding is based on the so-called channel polarization phenomenon induced by a transform over the underlying binary-input channel. The channel polarization is found to be universal in many signal processing problems and has been applied to the coded modulation schemes. In this paper, the channel polarization is further extended to the multiple antenna transmission following a multilevel coding principle. The multiple-input multile-output (MIMO) channel under quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) are transformed into a series of synthesized binary-input channels under a three-stage channel transform. Based on this generalized channel polarization, the proposed space-time polar coded modulation (STPCM) scheme allows a joint optimization of the binary polar coding, modulation and MIMO transmission. In addition, a practical solution of polar code construction over the fading channels is also provided, where the fading channels are approximated by an AWGN channel which shares the same capacity with the original. The simulations over the MIMO channel with uncorrelated Rayleigh fast fading show that the proposed STPCM scheme can outperform the bit-interleaved turbo coded scheme in all the simulated cases, where the latter is adopted in many existing communication systems.

On the Performance of Three Kinds of Channel Code Used in Turbo-BLAST.

Abstract:A MIMO system named Turbo-BLAST was introduced recently. We investigate the structure of Turbo- BLAST, and study its three kinds structures using different channel codes. Some necessary deductions and new structures are proposed: the decoding algorithm of trellis coded modulation (TCM) is modified to provide the detector with extrinsic information, and a new decoder structure for Turbo code is also given. Simulation results show that the structure using Turbo code can achieve better performance and faster convergence rate for high-order modulation. And the performance improvement of the structure using TCM is also obvious. Since TCM can bring high spectral efficiency, it would be useful to apply TCM in Turbo-BLAST.

Abstract:Turbo codes and LDPC (Low-Density Parity-Check) codes are two of the most powerful error correction codes that can approach Shannon limit in many communication systems. But there are little architecture presented to support both LDPC and Turbo codes, especially by the means of ASIC. This paper have implemented a common architecture that can decode LDPC and Turbo codes, and it is capable of supporting the WiMAX, WiFi, 3GPP-LTE standard on the same hardware. In this paper, we will carefully describe how to share memory and logic devices in different operation mode. The chip is design in a 130 nm CMOS technology, and the maximum clock frequency can reach up to 160 MHz. The maximum throughput is about 104 Mbps@5.5 iteration for Turbo codes and 136 Mbps@10iteration for LDPC codes. Comparing to other existing structure, the design speed, area have significant advantage.

Abstract:Space-time block codes (STBC) are widely used to obtain diversity gain in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel and Turbo codes are used to provide coding gain. So here a turbo-coded STBC concatenated system, which fully exploits the diversity gain and coding gain are studied. Specially we propose an iterative decoding scheme with a soft information processor created in the system to adjust the soft information for higher reliability in the system. It calls on iteration procedure in the whole system. Meanwhile we also investigate a number of Turbo codes schemes applied in the system. Simulation results in the end show that the system performance can be improved compared with conventional direct-connected decoding systems. It depends on numbers of iteration in the concatenated system and types of Turbo codes. Impoved BER performance can be achieved by making a trade-off between types of Turbo codes and numbers of iteration.

Abstract:It proposes a power control scheme with a space-time iterative multiuser receiver for turbo-coded DS-CDMA systems. The proposed receiver structure consists of a bank of single-user 2D-RAKE receivers, a space-time turbo partial parallel interference cancellation detector, and a bank of single-user turbo decoders. It exploits the space-time processing to first suppress MAI and then extract reliable soft information from the exchange between multiuser detector and turbo decoders by the way of turbo processing. Based on the synchronous multiuser DS-CDMA model, the computer simulation results are carried out in the single cell environment with path loss, shadowing, and multipath fading. As compared with the same complicated power control method using space-time partial parallel interference cancellation technique, the proposed approach provides better performance.

Abstract:Turbo codes employ iterative decoding through the exchange of extrinsic information (EI) on systematic bits between two parallel concatenated recursive systematic convolutional (RSC) codes. The El on parity bits can not be utilized during iterative decoding. In this paper, we propose a new type of iterative decoding scheme mapping parity bits of Turbo codes to a multi-dimensional (MD) QPSK which makes it possible to utilize the El on parity bits by iterative demapping. We use extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart to predict the system's convergence behavior and to help search good RSC codes and MD QPSK schemes. An analytical upper bound is also given to show the system's asymptotic performance in medium to high E-b/N-0 region. We introduce two special schemes and do simulations on them. Particularly, the scheme with Turbo code consisting of two 4-state (7, 6) codes and an eight dimensional QPSK outperforms Berrou turbo code with two 16-state RSC codes in water fall region and has similar error floor.

Abstract:In this study, a rate-varying space-time pre-coding scheme for a multiple-input multiple-output system in a fast-fading channel is proposed. In particular, unlike the traditional fixed rate space-time coding scheme, the transmitter which has no channel state information keeps choosing a pre-coding matrix randomly at each space-time symbol period to deliver the information until it is successfully decoded by the receiver. Since the number of received symbol vectors needed to successfully decode the information is determined by the channel realisation, the coding rate of the proposed scheme can adapt to the fast-fading channel. The exact expression of the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio gain after the post-combining and zero-forcing equalisation at the receiver side is derived, and a design criteria to achieve optimal performance in terms of average error probability and ergodic capacity under the mean power constraint is provided. Based on this, a minimal variance pre-coding (MVP) scheme is designed, which is compared with an intuitive Gaussian pre-coding scheme. It is shown that the MVP scheme has better performance and could adapt to different channel conditions.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to construct a near capacity Irregular Turbo Code and to evaluate its performance over Gaussian channel. The methodology used to evaluate and measure the performance of the new design is by simulating the system by developing a software platform using Matlab. The simulation carried out by implementing the system over different modulation schemes, different frame sizes, and different code rates in order to achieve a fair comparison between irregular turbo code and regular Turbo Code. The simulation results showed that the Irregular Turbo Code with 64QAM modulation is capable of achieving a coding gain of 1.29 dB over its corresponding Turbo Code for a low Bit Error Rate 10 to 5, when used in a Gaussian noisy channel. Also, the Irregular Turbo Code designed in this paper, utilizes a single recursive Convolution encoder with short frame size of 5012 bits. The new designed codec can play an important role in many commercial applications such as Third-Generation wireless phones, Digital Video Broadcasting systems, or Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks, etc.

Abstract:In this paper high-coding-rate block turbo codes (BTC) are adopted in digital television terrestrial broadcasting (DTTB) to replace the conventional applications of serially concatenated codes. A new multi-resolution 64QAM constellation is designed for hierarchical modulation to offer three tiers of services with dedicated protection in one DTTB channel. In the receiver, the simulation result on fixed-point iterative turbo decoding algorithm based on MAX-LOG-MAP criterion is aided to develop the ASIC core. Simulation in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) on additive white Gaussian noise channel shows that the required Eb/NO High priority stream is only 3.9 dB at the threshold of visibility, which makes it more competent for mobile and indoor reception or other error-sensitive services. At the same time, the medium and low priority streams can support fixed outdoor reception.

Abstract:Product codes are generally used for progressive image transmission when random errors and packet loss (or burst errors) co-exist. However, the optimal rate allocation considering both component codes gives rise to high-optimization complexity. In addition, the decoding performance may be degraded quickly when the channel varies beyond the design point. In this paper, we propose a new unequal error protection (UEP) scheme for progressive image transmission by using rate-compatible punctured Turbo codes (RCPT) and cyclic redundancy check (CRC) codes only. By sophisticatedly interleaving each coded frame, the packet loss can be converted into randomly punctured bits in a Turbo code. Therefore, error control in noisy channels with different types of errors is equivalent to dealing with random bit errors only, with reduced turbo code rates. A genetic algorithm-based method is presented to further reduce the optimization complexity. This proposed method not only gives a better performance than product codes in given channel conditions but is also more robust to the channel variation. Finally, to break down the error floor of turbo decoding, we further extend the above RCPT/CRC protection to a product code scheme by adding a Reed-Solomon (RS) code across the frames. The associated rate allocation is discussed and further improvement is demonstrated.

Abstract:Most research on differential MIMO is based on space-time block codes, aiming to achieve maximum transmit diversity and thus make the transmission more robust. However, spatial multiplexing schemes such as the Bell-Labs Layered Space Time (BLAST) wireless architectures are more suitable for achieving high link capacity. To this end, in this paper, we derive a simple differential modulation scheme based on BLAST for any number of transmit antennas and receive antennas to realize high bandwidth efficiency. Further still, motivated by the principle of Turbo BLAST, we report a differential Turbo-BLAST scheme by a serially concatenated outer code. Much better performance can be observed.
