Abstract:Sponsored by the Chinese National Fundamental Research and Development Program in 2001, Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey launched out a long geophysical survey from the northeastern part of the South China Sea (SCS), through the Luzon Arc, to the Huatung Basin and the Gagua Ridge. Based on high-resolution seismic data from this survey, combined with gravimetric and magnetic modeling, a systematic effort is made to the study of the regional geodynamics offshore southern Taiwan. By focusing particularly on precollisional tectonic interactions between adjacent geological units and their tectonic affiliations, this study can help reveal early arc-continent collisional processes that formed the Taiwan orogen. The construction of the Manila accretionary prism and its eastward progressive deformation indicate that the subduction of SCS have experienced multiple phases of increased activity. Active precollisional crustal shortening within the Northern Luzon Trough resulted in tilting of sedimentary layers at angles between 6° and 13°. But the shortening induced by tilting accounts for only a tiny part of regional total crustal compression. The eastern flank of the Luzon Arc appears to be more active than the rest, evidenced by active faulting and folding in the intra-arc basins on the eastern flank. Magnetic modeling/inversion shows that the Luzon Arc may have experienced multiple phases of magmatic activities, causing lateral magnetic inhomogeneity. Bouguer gravity anomalies and gravity modeling indicate that the Huatung Basin has anomalously higher crustal and upper mantle densities than those of SCS and the Luzon Arc. In addition, there is a large bathymetric difference between the Huatung Basin and the northeastern part of SCS basin. These observations argue against early hypothesis that the Huatung Basin and the northeastern part of SCS basin may once have belonged to one single oceanic crust, in part or in whole. The Gagua Ridge, as a sliver of uplifted oceanic crust, may be related to a transient northwestward subduction of the western Philippine plate. All evidences point to the argument that the region offshore southern Taiwan is experiencing multiple terrain amalgamation, which is a classical model for continental growth.
ARC-CONTINENT COLLISION OROGENY IN OFFSHORE TAIWAN DURING NEOGENE

Abstract:The offshore Taiwan arc-continent collisional orogen was situated in the conjunction area of the Eurasian plate, the Philippine Sea plate and the South China Sea, which was created in Neogene. The structural geometry and kinematics of the Taiwan accretion prism were studied using multi-channel seismic profile of no. 973 survey. The geological evidence showed that the accretionary prism caused by the collison was consisted of two distincet structural parts: the prisms caused by the arc-continent collision and by the subduction of South China Sea respectively. In the studied area, the two main units were the Gaoping Slope and the Hengchun Ridge. From the Middle Miocene the South China Sea began to subduct beneath the Philippine Sea plate along the Manila Trench, and the Hengchun Ridge came into being. The Philippine Sea plate also moved northwestwards and collided obliquely with the Eurasian continent since 6.5 Ma, the arc-continent collision resulted in the Gaoping Slop west of the Hengchun Ridge, and the both made up the offshore Taiwan accretionary prism. Compared with the onland geology, the offshore Taiwan accectionary prism had a similar and continuous structural characteristics. They had the same tectonic mechanism but varied deformation history, i. e. the collision firstly began in the north part of Taiwan, then propagated southwards, so the north Taiwan Island experienced much longer deformational history.

Abstract:The Fujian coast Changle-Nanao metamorphism zone rocks are composed of gneiss, schist andhornblendite which had gone through metamorphism of amphilbolite facies, and followed the large-scaleintrusive mass of gneissic granite. The zone was orginally composed of Early Palaeozoiccontinental margin and island arc volcanic and sedimentary rocks. In 180-150 Ma, the zone undermentductile shear deformation and amphibolite facies metamorphism; and in 130-80 Ma, rose rap1dly andco1lided with the Southeastem China continen1al rnargln volonic rocks a10ng the NE trending ductileshear belt. The above geologic setting laid the present Fujian coast tectonic foundation whose formationand evolution are known to be interrlatal with the sueduction and collision of the Taiwan CentralRange.
Deformation Characters and Its Tectonic Evolution of the Southwest Taiwan Basin

Abstract:Through the interpretation of the seismic profile across the NE South China Sea region, combined with the analysis of free-air gravity anomaly and magnetic anomaly, it was found that the Southwest Taiwan Basin's structure is in NW-NEE direction and it has a special double-layer sedimentary style. It's a Cenozoic rifty basin which has a close relationship with the evolution of the South China Sea. From the late Cretaceous the basin begun its rifting action. During the Paleogene, extensional structures, including normal faults and half-grabens controlled by them, developed and the basin was covered by the Paleocene, Eocene and Oligocene deposit. At the end of Oligocene the basin was influenced by contractive action and developed some thrust faults and inversion tectonics. The evolution character is "Extension first, contraction". After Miocene the basin began its thermal subsidence.

Abstract:The Taiwan Orogen has been forming since the Late Miocene, by oblique collision between the Eurasian margin and the North Luzon Arc system as the result of the northwestward movement of the adjacent Philippine Sea Plate. The collision belt is still active, and involves all the tectonic units in other continental orogenic belts although it is on a small scale. It is an ideal field laboratory for studying young orogenic systems and provides a unique perspective for understanding the process of arc-continent collision and marginal sea evolution in the western Pacific Ocean. Here we summarize the recent advances in the Taiwan Orogen, and discuss its tectonic division and evolution. We divided the Taiwan Orogen into six tectonic units, from west to east, the Western foreland basins, the Central Range fold-thrust belt, the Tailuko belt, the Yuli-Lichi ophiolitic melange belt, the Longitudinal Valley molasse basin and the Coast Range arc system. Among them, the Western foreland basins is a sedimentary basin formed since 6. 5Ma ago along with the uplift and erosion of the Taiwan Orogen. The Central Range fold-thrust belt consists of Cenozoic (57 similar to 5. 3Ma) passive marginal basin deposits in the eastern Eurasian plate, that was modified by folding, thrusting and metamorphism as a result of the arc-continental collision. The Tailuko belt is an ancient terrane in the orogen, which mainly records the magmatism, sedimentation and metamorphism formed by the Mesozoic Paleo-Pacific subduction beneath the eastern Eurasian active margin. The Coast Range arc system and YuliLichi ophiolitic melange belt represent respectively the arc and forearc accretionary wedge formed by the subduction of the South China Sea plate beneath the Philippine Sea plate since the Middle Miocene (similar to 18Ma). The Yuli melange has typical low-temperature and high-pressure metamorphic rocks with metamorphic ages of 11 similar to 9Ma, and the arc volcanism mainly occurred in the period of 9. 2 similar to 4. 2Ma. The Longitudinal Valley molasse basin documents intermountain deposits since 1. 1Ma. The tectonic evolution of the Taiwan Orogen includes four stages : ( a) the Paleo-Pacific Plate subduction and the eastern Eurasian margin accretion stage (200 similar to 60Ma) ; ( b) the eastern Eurasian margin rifting and the South China Sea spreading stage (60 similar to 18Ma) ; ( c) the South China Sea subduction stage (18 similar to 4Ma) and ( d) the arc-continent collision stage ( < 6Ma) . We suggest that the Taiwan Orogen is a special case, in which the arc-continent collision was not accompanied by extinction of the ocean basin in between, but was triggered by the North Luzon arc and the forearc accretionary wedge northwestward shifting along with the movement of the Philippine Sea Plate, and finally obducted to the eastern Eurasian margin.
Mesozoic Tectono-Magmatic Activities in South China: Retrospect and Prospect

Abstract:The South China Block was formed through the collisional orogeny between the Cathaysia Block and the Yangtze Block in the Early Neoproterozoic. The northern, western and southern sides of the South China Block were affected by disappearance of the Paleo-Tethyan Ocean during the Paleozoic. The southern and northern sides of the South China Block were respectively collided with the Indo-China Block and North China Block in the latest Paleozoic to form the basic framework of the Eastern China. The Eastern China has been affected by the westward subduction of the Pacific Plate since the Mesozoic. Therefore, the South China Block was influenced by the three major tectonic systems, leading to a superposed compound tectonics. The comparative study of the Mesozoic geology between the South China Block and its surrounding areas suggests that although the Mesozoic South China Block was adjacent to the subduction zone of the western Pacific, no juvenile arc-type crust has been found in the eastern margin. The main Mesozoic geology in South China is characterized by reworking of ancient continental margins to intracontinental tectonics, lacking oceanic arc basalts and continental arc andesites. Therefore, a key to understanding of the Mesozoic geology in South China is to determine the temporal-spatial distribution and tectonic evolution of Mesozoic magmatic rocks in this region. This paper presents a review on the tectonic evolution of the South China Block through summarizing the magmatic rock records from the compressional to extensional tectonic process with the transition at the three juncture zones and using the deformation and geophysic data from the deep part of the South China continental lithosphere. Our attempt is to promote the study of South China’s geology and to make it as a typical target for development of plate tectonic theory.

Abstract:Taiwan accretionary prism lies in the conjunction area of the Eurasian Plate,the Philippine Sea Plate and the South China Sea,and is characterized by the young age of the arc-continent collision.The structural geometry,kinematics and density structure of the Taiwan accretionary prism were studied based on the interpretation of a multi-channel seismic profile obtained during a 973 survey.Geological evidence showed that the Taiwan accretionary prism consists of three distinct structural domains: the collision prism caused by the arc-continent collision,the subduction prism caused by the inner-ocean subduction,and the tectonic wedge between the Luzon arc and the prism.In the studied area,the three domains are the Gaoping Slope,the Hengchun Ridge and the west part of Luzon Through,respectively.Since the middle Miocene,the South China Sea had subducted beneath the Philippine Sea Plate along the Manila Trench,and the subduction prism came into being.The Philippine Sea Plate also moved northwestward and collided obliquely with the Asian continent since 6.5Ma B.P..The arc-continent collision made the collision prism west of the subduction prism,together forming the Taiwan accretionary prism.With the continuous process of the arc-continent collision,a tectonic wedging took place along the rear of Taiwan accretionary prism and caused the uplift and deformation of the strata in the west part of the North Luzon Through.Compared with the onshore geology,the offshore Taiwan accectionary prism has the similar and relevant structure characteristics.They have the same tectonic mechanism but different deformation history,i.e.the collision began in the north of Taiwan,and then propagated southward.The onshore Taiwan has much longer deformation history.

Abstract:Collisional orogens form when tectonic forces amalgamte fragments of Earth’s continental lithosphere. The sutures between individual fragments, or terranes, are potential sites of weakness that facilitate subsequent continental breakup. Therefore, the lithospheric architecture of collisional orogens provides key information for evaluating the long-term evolution of the continental interior: for example, the South China Block (SCB), where the tectonic history is severely obscured by extensive surface deformation, magmatism, and metamorphism. Using new passive-source seismic models, we show a contrasting seismic architecture across the SCB, with three prominent crustal dipping structures across the Jiangnan Orogen. Combined with constraints from multi-disciplinary regional geophysical datasets, these pronounced dipping patterns are interpreted as relict wedge-like lithospheric deformation zones initiated in the fossil collisions that assembled the Yangtze Block and the SCB. The overall trend of these tectonic wedges implies successive crustal growth along paleo-continental margins and is indicative of northward subduction and docking of accretional terranes. In contrast, no such dipping structures are preserved in the Cathaysia Block, indicating a weak and reorganized lithosphere. The variations in the deformation responses across the SCB reflect the long-term modifications of the lithosphere caused by prolonged collision and extension events throughout the tectonic history of the SCB. Our results demonstrate the critical roles that suture zones played in the successive growth and evolution of the continental lithosphere.

Abstract:Based on new research results,this study analyzed the deep structures,kinematic characteristics and interior structure of the Shandong segment of the Tan-Lu fault zone. The characteristics of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic Tectonic evolution of the Shandong segment of the Tan-Lu fault zone were also discussed. During the period of collision orogenesis between North China block and South China block,the Shandong segment of the Tan-Lu fault zone underwent a sinistral shearing strike-slip deformation. The sinistral strike-slip movement of the Shandong segment had been controlled by the subduction of the ancient Pacific plate toward the east Asian continent from late Jurassic to early Eocene (before 50Ma). The strike-slip movement of the Tan-Lu fault zone was caused by the stress transferred from the boundary of plate subduction. The extension of the Shandong segment of the Tan-Lu fault zone and the basins beside it was associated with the intracontinental rifting process caused by lithosphere delamination and upheaval of upper mantle.

Abstract:Abstract Large, destructive historical earthquakes off the coast of China’s Fujian Province point to important tectonic activity in the western Taiwan Strait that, until recently, has received little attention. We present newly acquired reflection seismic data that is used to study the shallow crustal structure of the western Taiwan Strait. With these data we map the location of the Benhai fault for the first time, describe its upper crustal geometry and, in combination with seismicity and earthquake focal mechanisms, interpret its kinematics. These new data demonstrate that there is wide spread evidence of faulting that reaches the sea floor in the western Taiwan Strait, clearly indicating that the Benhai fault is active. Faults that cut up section from steep basin sidewalls to form flower structures or terraced sidewall fault zones, together with the fault and basin map pattern, are consistent with this fault zone being in the early developmental stages of a dextral strike-slip system. Earthquake focal mechanisms, although not definitive, support the model of an active dextral strike-slip fault system in the western Taiwan Strait.

Abstract:The Taiwan orogeny, an example of arc-continental collision, exhibits complex geological structures and rapid exhumation. Many models have tried and failed to fully capture the dynamics of these processes. We developed a comprehensive thermomechanical model that considers the transition from brittle to ductile behavior with depth, lithology-dependent erosion and observed decollement and backstop geometries. This model successfully reproduces the intricate structures observed within the Taiwan orogeny, aligns with structural complexities, metamorphic temperature profiles, thermochronological records, strain distributions, and the rates of exhumation and cooling and elucidates the roles of ductile deformation and ramp structures in forming the Hsuehshan Range and the Western fold and thrust belt. The insights from this model offer potential applicability to other orogenic wedges worldwide.

Abstract:The Tianshan (Tien Shan) Range is an important Paleozoic collisional orogenic belt and the key to understand the central Asia tectonic evolution. This paper integrates our research results with the existing Chinese and international literature on sedimentology, geochemistry, isotopic geochronology, paleontonology and paleomagnetism of the Tianshan and Tarim regions to propose that the oblique collision may have played an important role in the late Paleozoic closing of the southern Tianshan oceanic basin. As a result of the Sinian (latest Proterozoic, younger than 800 Ma) continental extension and rifting process, the Tarim and Yili blocks separated from their parent continent in the Late Cambrian-Ordovician. The southern Tianshan oceanic crusts between the two blocks subducted northward beneath the southern margin of the Yili block in the Silurian. During the Devonian-Early Carboniferous, the Tarim block rapidly drifted to the north and rotated about 46 degrees clockwise. This process induced the collision of the Yili micro-continent with the eastern segment (present geographical position) of the Tarim continent in the Late Devonian, and the southern Tianshan oceanic crust evolved to be a west-facing remnant oceanic basin. During the Late Carboniferous-Early Permian, the Tarim block, located within an almost constant latitude range, rotated about 26 degrees clockwise with respect to the Yili micro-continent, which ultimately closed the remnant oceanic basin in a 'scissors-like' manner from east to west and completed the Tarim-Yili collision. Subsequent A-type subduction of the Tarim continental crust and lithosphere-scale sinistral shearing generated a magmatic are on the southern margin of the Tarim-Yili suture zone. Late Mesozoic Tectonism of Southeast China

Abstract:Southeast China is located on the western margin of the Pacific and in the southern segment of the Eastern Asian Continental Margin. It developed on the basement of the Paleo-Asian tectonic system with E-W striking. During the Early Cretaceous, the transition from the Paleo-Asian to the Paleo-Pacific tectonic system was finished. The Nanling zone is probably one of the tectonic exchange domains. Late Mesozoic large-scale volcano-intrusion complex in the area was generated mainly by the subduction of the Paleo - Pacific plate. However, there are alkaline series basalt, bimodal volcanic rock, mixed crust-mantle rock in the area, implying the deep level tectono-magmatism or basalt underplating. The Late Mesozoic subduction zone is located in the zone from the Median Tectonic Line of Japan to the Longitudinal Valley of Taiwan and then to the Mindoro-Palawan of the Philippines. The subduction with lower angle (30°) and fast velocity (10 cm/a) is an important geodynamic mechanism that formed a huge volcanic belt along the Eastern Asian Continental Margin. A huge linear volcanic-intrusion complex belt and six large regional faults comprise a principal tectonic framework of the Late Mesozoic Southeast China Region. These six faults have the following geological property: the Taiwan Longitudinal Valley was a Late Mesozoic subduction zone of the Paleo-Pacific plate; the Changle-Nanao fault was a tectono-magmatic and sinistral strike-slip zone that was developed within the South China Continental Block; the Lishui-Zhenghe-Dapu fault was a boundary separating the Mesozoic volcanic-intrusion complex to southeast from pre-Mesozoic Paleo-Asian system to northwest; the Shaoxing-Jiangshan-Pingxiang zone was a boundary fault controlling Late Cretaceous-Eogene extensional basins; the Dexing-Dongxiang fault was the northern boundary of the Late Mesozoic volcanic domain and the Ganiiang fault was the western boundary of the Late Mesozoic volcanic domain. A transition from compression to extension took place about 100-90 Ma. Finally, the origin of the Late Mesozoic fault system dipping SE is discussed.
Research on the Segmentation of Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone

Abstract:Based on aeromagnetic data, gravity data and geoscience transect ,we analyse the characteristics of geophysics field and deep structures of the Tan-Lu (Tancheng—Lujiang) fault zone. Furthermore, integrated with former research results, the kinematic characteristics of each segment of Tan-Lu fault zone and the generation mechanisms of its segmentation are discussed. The results show that there are remarkable distinction in geophysics field ,deep structures and evolution of each segment. The collisional orogenesis between the North and South China plates mainly effected on the middle and south segments of Tan-Lu fault zone. However the north segment was controlled by the back-arc spreading and mantle diapir ,due to the subduction of Pacific plate. The eastern China has different tectonic background and dynamics in different periods since Mesozoic, resulting in the multi-stage tectonic regime transformation of the Tan-Lu fault zone, and the different characteristics of each segment.
On the Faults of Western Hexi Corridor and Its Nearby Regions, Northwestern China: Thrust Faults and Strike-Slip Faults of Late Cenozoic

Abstract:The structural analysis based on the explanation of seismic profiles indicates that a lot of thrust faults and strike-slip faults of Late Cenozoic occur in western Hexi Corridor and its nearby regions. They can be divided into two types. One is thrust faults dipping southwards and extending NW wards, which was mainly correlated with the thrusting of northern Qilianshan and located at the NE margin of Qilianshan and the southwestern Hexi Corridor, the other is thrust faults and strike-slip faults that were related to the strike-slipping of Altun fault and located mainly at the regions of Hongliuxia, Kuantaishan, and Helishan that are close to the Altun fault. All these faults, which were related to the remote effects of collision between the two continents of India and Tibet during the Late Eocene and later, started to develop since the Late Tertiary and presented the features of violent thrust or strike-slip movement in Quaternary. Many of them are still active up to now and thus belong to the active faults that are the potential inducement of earthquakes in the Hexi Corridor. Moreover, a lot of intense structural deformation and many morphology phenomena such as tectonic terrace and river offset were formed under the control of these faults in Quaternary.

Abstract:The structural analysis based on the explanation of seismic profiles indicates that a lot of thrust faults and strike-slip faults of Late Cenozoic occur in western Hexi Corridor and nearby regions. They can be divided into two types. One is the thrust faults dipping south ward and extending northwest ward, which was mainly correlated with the thrusting of northern Qilianshan and located at the northeast margin of Qilianshan and the southeastern Hexi Corridor, the other is the thrust faults and strike-slip faults that were related to the strike-slipping of Altun fault and located mainly at the regions of Hongliuxia, Kuantaishan, and Helishan that are close to the Altun fault. All these faults, which were related to the remote effects of collision between the two continents of India and Tibet during the Late Eocene and later, started to develop since the Late Tertiary and presented the features of violent thrust or strike-slip movement in Quaternary. Many of them are still active up to now and thus belong to the active faults that are the potential inducement of earthquakes in the Hexi Corridor. Moreover, a lot of intense structural deformation and many morphology phenomena such as tectonic terrace and river offset were formed under the control of these faults in Quaternary.
Seismic evidence for slab detachment beneath the Taiwan Orogen

Abstract:To clarify the deep structure of the Taiwan Orogen formed by the collision between the Eurasian and the Philippine Sea plates, we determine a robust 3-D shear-wave velocity (Vs) model of the crust and upper mantle beneath the Taiwan Island and its surrounding regions by applying a novel joint inversion method to local and teleseismic P and S wave travel times, Rayleigh-wave phase velocities and S-wave receiver functions. A notable new feature revealed by our model is the morphologic variation of the subducting Eurasian slab along the orogen belt. Beneath South Taiwan, the subducting Eurasian slab is imaged as a continuous high-Vs zone down to ∼400 km depth with an obvious dip angle change at ∼70 km depth. Beneath Central Taiwan, the Eurasian slab is imaged as intermittent high-Vs anomalies in the upper mantle, whereas the Eurasian slab exhibits as a sheet-like high-Vs zone with a low dip angle down to only ∼100 km depth beneath North Taiwan. These results suggest that parts of the subducting Eurasian slab have been detached beneath the Philippine Sea east off the Taiwan Island, which may result in the remnant slab rebounding to underplate the upper plate and so promote mountain building on the Taiwan Island.

Structural and kinematic evolution of strike-slip shear zones around and in the Central Tianshan: Insights for eastward tectonic wedging in the southwest Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Abstract:In order to better understand the late Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), we carried out structural and geochronological studies on the poorly investigated Xiaergou and Wulasitai shear zones around and in the Chinese Central Tianshan. The Xiaergou shear zone is the connecting segment between the North Tianshan Fault and Main Tianshan Shear Zone along the northern margin of the Yili - Central Tianshan blocks, it strikes NW-SE with a width of ∼3-5 km and shows predominant dextral kinematics. Zircon U-Pb ages of pre- and syn-kinematic granitic dykes within the Xiaergou shear zone indicate that the dextral shearing was active at ∼312-295 Ma. The Wulasitai shear zone is a high-strain belt occurring in the interior of the Central Tianshan block, it extends NW-SE for more than 40 km with variable widths of ∼1-5 km, steep mylonitic foliations and sub-horizontal stretching lineation are well developed and various kinematic indicators suggest prevailing sinistral shearing. New biotite 40Ar/39Ar ages of two meta-sedimentary rocks, together with the published metamorphic zircon ages constrain the timing of the sinistral shearing at ∼312-301 Ma. Our new results combined with the previous studies reveal that the dextral strike-slip shear zones framing the Central Tianshan formed almost simultaneously in the latest Carboniferous (∼310 Ma) and lasted until the middle to late Permian. They resulted from the eastward tectonic wedging and relative rotations between continental blocks in the SW CAOB. The sinistral shearing of the Wulasitai shear zone within the Central Tianshan was likely generated due to differential eastward motions of the northern and southern parts of the Central Tianshan.

Abstract:Although the NNE-trending Tanlu fault zone is overwhelmingly taken as a sinistral strike-slip fault in western literature, we report intense early Mesozoic overthrust tectonics around entire Tanlu. This contractional deformation around Tanlu caused the North China block and the South China block to be shortened by at least 148 km (or 74%) and 158 kin (or 56%) normal to Tanlu respectively, indicating that strong North China-South China convergence occurred along Tanlu and North China does not penetrate into the sedimentary cover of the South China block. Restoration of deformation the North China block shows that prior to the collision, the Sulu belt could have been in alignment with the original Tanlu fault. Paleozoic lithofacies and paleogeographic evidence shows that there seem both the southeastern North China promontory and the eastern Yangtze promontory, the latter including whole South Korea. The mutual penetration between these two promontories led to the separation of the original Tanlu suture into present southern Tanlu and Sulu with profound deformation of eastern China including the area around Tanlu. The northern segment of the Tanlu fault zone could have been initiated when the eastern North China block to the east of the Tanlu fault was extruded northwards toward the subduction zone around the North China. and Siberia blocks, due to the impact of the Yangtze eastern promontory. Simultaneously, the escape of this block could have created space in the Sulu for the transportation of the UHP rocks that could have been originally exhumed near the Dabie Shan.
Tectonic exhumation of a metamorphic core in an arc-continent collision during oblique convergence, Taiwan

Abstract:Observations over the last few decades from a number of orogenic systems have highlighted the possible importance of tectonic exhumation, i.e., ductile thinning and normal faulting, in exhuming rocks once buried in high-pressure conditions. Taiwan is one of the few active orogens in the world where rocks that once experienced high-pressure metamorphism (> 50 km) are exposed at the Earth's surface, providing a natural laboratory for advancing our understanding of exhumation processes. We integrate previously published studies of the Taiwan orogen with new structural, geochronological, and fluid inclusion microthermometry data to argue that tectonic extrusion and structural thinning played a critical role in exhuming the metamorphic core of the orogen until very recently, ca. 0.7 Ma. We propose a two-stage process for exhuming the high-pressure metamorphic rocks of the Yuli Belt: an initial stage where exhumation is driven primarily by pressure gradients in a subduction channel and a second stage that is initiated as an orogen-parallel regional-scale strike-slip zone, the Tailuko shear zone, is offset by an orogen-normal strike-slip zone. The offset generates an extensional bend that is filled with extruding high-pressure rocks as the upper crust is structurally thinned. Evidence for tectonic thinning comes primarily from a low-angle penetrative foliation that records significant vertical shortening and a suite of sub-vertical late-stage, mineral-filled veins. Isotopic dating indicates that the second stage started ca. 2.4–3.1 Ma and ended at ca. 0.7 Ma when the northern Backbone Range orocline started to form. We propose the low-angle foliation formed in the footwall of a regional-scale extensional shear zone that rooted to the east, beneath the forearc. Combined tectonic and erosional processes may have limited the topographic growth of the orogen from ~3.0 to < 1.0 Ma.
