Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a Liouville type theorem for a class of elliptic equations including the conformal Gaussian curvature equation − u = K (x)e2u in R2, where K (x) is a Hölder continuous function in R2 that does not have a fixed sign near infinity. The main tool in our approach is an asymptotic formula for the solution at infinity and the method of moving planes. We also show how our Liouville theorem can be used to obtain a priori bound for solutions of the prescribing Gaussian curvature equation in S2, namely u + K (x)e2u = 1 in S2, where K (x) is Hölder continuous and nonnegative in S2 but vanishes on a set with nonempty interior, a case left open in previous research. Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:A fundamental theorem of Liouville asserts that positive entire harmonic functions in Euclidean spaces must be constant. A remarkable Liouville-type theorem of Caffarelli-Gidas-Spruck states that positive entire solutions of $-\Delta u=u^{ {(n+2)}/{(n-2)} }$, $n\ge 3$, are unique modulo Möbius transformations. Far-reaching extensions were established for general fully nonlinear conformally invariant equations through the works of Chang-Gursky-Yang, Li-Li, Li, and Viaclovsky. In this paper, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of such Liouville-type theorems. This leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for local gradient estimates of solutions to hold, assuming a one-sided bound on the solutions, for a wide class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations involving Schouten tensors. A pivotal advancement in proving these Liouville-type theorems is our enhanced understanding of solutions to such equations near isolated singularities. In particular, we utilize earlier results of Caffarelli-Li-Nirenberg on lower- and upper-conical singularities. For general conformally invariant fully nonlinear elliptic equations, we prove that a viscosity super- (sub-)solution can be extended across an isolated singularity if and only if it is a lower- (upper-)conical singularity. We also provide necessary and sufficient conditions for lower- (upper-)conical behavior of a function near isolated singularities in terms of its conformal Hessian. As an application of our Liouville theorems and local gradient estimates, we establish new existence and compactness results for conformal metrics on a closed Riemannian manifold with prescribed symmetric functions of the Schouten (Ricci) tensor, allowing the scalar curvature of the conformal metrics to have varying signs.

Abstract:We study finite total curvature solutions of the Liouville equation $\Delta u+e^{2u}=0$ on a complete surface $(M,g)$ with nonnegative Gauss curvature. It turns out that the asymptotic behavior of the solution separates two extremal cases: on the one end, if the solution decays not too fast, then $(M,g)$ must be isometric to the standard Euclidean plane; on the other end, if $(M,g)$ is isometric to the flat cylinder $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{R}$, then solutions must decay linearly and are completely classified.

Abstract:The $\sigma_k(A_g)$ curvature and the boundary $\mathcal{B}^k_g$ curvature arise naturally from the Chern--Gauss--Bonnet formula for manifolds with boundary. In this paper, we prove a Liouville theorem for the equation $\sigma_k(A_g)=1$ in $\overline{\mathbb{R}^n_+}$ with the boundary condition $\mathcal{B}^k_g=c$ on $\partial\mathbb{R}^n_+$, where $g=e^{2v}|dx|^2$ and $c$ is some nonnegative constant. This extends an earlier result of Wei, which assumes the existence of $\lim_{|x|\to\infty}(v(x)+2\log|x|)$. In addition, we establish a local gradient estimate for solutions of such equations, assuming an upper bound on the solution $v$.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the solutions of Delta u + K(x)e(2u )= 0 in R-2 with K <= 0. We introduce the following quantities: alpha(p)(K) = sup {alpha is an element of R: integral(R2)vertical bar K(x)vertical bar(p)(1+vertical bar x vertical bar)(2 alpha p+2(p-1))dx < +infinity}, for all p >= 1. Under the assumption (H-1): alpha(p)(K) > -infinity for some p > 1 and alpha(1)(K) > 0, we show that for any 0 < alpha < alpha(1)(K), there is a unique solution u(alpha) with u(alpha)(x) = alpha ln vertical bar x vertical bar + c(alpha) + o(vertical bar x1 vertical bar(-)(2 beta/1+2 beta)) at infinity and beta is an element of (0, alpha(1)(K)-alpha). Furthermore, we show an example K-0 <= 0 such that alpha(p) (K0) = -infinity for any p > 1 and alpha(1)(K-0) > 0, for which we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions. In particular, we prove the existence of a solution u alpha(*) such that u(alpha*) - alpha(*) In vertical bar x vertical bar = O(1) at infinity for some alpha(*) > 0, which does not converge to a constant at infinity. This example exhibits a new phenomenon of solution with logarithmic growth, finite total curvature, and non-uniform asymptoti vertical bar c behavior at infinity.

Abstract:We establish an area growth estimate for solutions that are bounded from above of the Liouville equation $\Delta u+K e^{2u}=0$ with a positive pinched curvature $0<\lambda\leq K\leq\Lambda$. As an application, we provide a new proof of Eremenko-Gui-Li-Xu's result in [EGLX]. We also classify solutions with an upper bound in the half plane with the boundary having constant geodesic curvature.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the fully nonlinear equation σ2(g)=aσ1(g)+b. The first result is to obtain the entire solutions of the equation for conformally flat metric on Rn under some additional assumptions, which generalizes the famous result of Chang–Gursky–Yang in [3]. The second one is to classify compact locally conformally flat manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and the metric g satisfying the equation.

Abstract:We prove a Liouville-type theorem for biharmonic maps from a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ that has a lower bound on its Ricci curvature and positive injectivity radius into a Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded from above. Under these geometric assumptions we show that if the $L^p$-norm of the tension field is bounded and the $n$-energy of the map is sufficiently small then every biharmonic map must be harmonic, where $2<p<n$.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish Liouville-type theorems for a one-parameter family of elliptic PDEs on the standard upper half-plane model of the hyperbolic space, under specific geometric assumptions. Our results indicate that the Euclidean half-plane is the only compactification of the hyperbolic space when the scalar curvature of the compactified metric has a designated sign.

Abstract:We derive local estimates of positive solutions to the conformal $Q$-curvature equation $$ (-\Delta)^m u = K(x) u^{\frac{n+2m}{n-2m}} ~~~~~~ in ~ \Omega \backslash \Lambda $$ near their singular set $\Lambda$, where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open set, $K(x)$ is a positive continuous function on $\Omega$, $\Lambda$ is a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $2 \leq m < n/2$ and $m$ is an integer. Under certain flatness conditions at critical points of $K$ on $\Lambda$, we prove that $u(x) \leq C [{dist}(x, \Lambda)]^{-(n-2m)/2}$ when the upper Minkowski dimension of $\Lambda$ is less than $(n-2m)/2$.

Abstract:In this paper we prove gradient estimates of both elliptic and parabolic types, specifically, of Souplet-Zhang, Hamilton and Li-Yau types for positive smooth solutions to a class of nonlinear parabolic equations involving the Witten or drifting Laplacian on smooth metric measure spaces. These estimates are established under various curvature conditions and lower bounds on the generalised Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor and find utility in proving elliptic and parabolic Harnack-type inequalities as well as general Liouville-type and other global constancy results. Several applications and consequences are presented and discussed.
