Outsourcing Revisited:Knowledge Transfer and Learning

Abstract:This paper is focused on knowledge transfer and learning of the outsourcing process. We set up the payoff function for the outsourcing firm in the developing country and the transnational host firm,conclude the information the host firm delivered to the outsourcing firm is bigger than the outsourcing firm delivered to the host firm. But other profits from the outsourcing firm can compensate for the knowledge externality of the host firm. Meanwhile,the R&D skills between two firms are different and the complementary learning is needed. Hence the host firm and the outsourcing firm are partners in the worldwide competition and a collusion game model should be used. To verify this a case study of Taiwan's small and medium-sized enterprise is introduced and suggestions are given,i.e.,the government guide and the upgrading in the value chain of the enterprises are key issues for the future development.
