Abstract:Pesticides are indispensably essential in agricultural practices. Traditional pesticides and environmentally friendly pesticides both are used to control the damage caused by pests and diseases. Conventional procedures were carried out to detect pesticide residues using chromatography and spectrophotometric techniques. Inno-vative extractions (micro-extraction) and detection technologies (biosensors, screening cards, etc.) have been developed for faster and more efficient screening of pesticide compounds in plant-derived foodstuffs. The present review summarized the trends of pesticide occurrence in plant-derived foodstuffs, and discussed the advances in pesticides detection. Also, the pesticide dissipation and the mechanism of action are discussed. The extensive literature review demonstrates various techniques already in use or having futuristic potential for detecting and dissipating pesticides in foodstuffs, which can pave the way for future research efforts.

Abstract:Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), the most common mode of which employs pressurized carbon dioxide as the mobile phase, is enjoying resuscitation. It is once again reconsidered as a fast developing chromatographic technique for the separation and identification of compounds in mixtures. In recent years, significant improvements in instrumentation, and its proficiency in specialized applications, have rekindled interest in the technique. SFC applicability in various fields, such as pharmaceutical analysis, bioanalysis, forensic science, environmental analysis, food science, has continued to expand. The present article delineates a comprehensive up-to-date overview of the applications of SFC in pesticide analysis, including the monitoring of their residues in different matrices and the investigation of their environmental behaviors such as dissipation and bioaccumulation. Since ∼30% of currently registered pesticides are chiral compounds, attention is also paid to the analysis of such pesticides due to their enantioselective biological activities. Thus, both achiral and chiral SFC in pesticide analysis is reviewed. The article covers discussions on chromatographic conditions, method validation, and sample preparation as well as comparisons with gas chromatographic and liquid chromatographic approaches.

Abstract:A new analytical method was developed to simultaneously determine residues of 109 pesticides (including isomers) in the foods of animal origin. Acetonitrile was selected for accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) for effectively extracting the pesticides from the fatty samples. The cleanup was performed with an automated gel permeation chromatography (GPC) cleanup system. The prepared samples were analysed with GC–MS in the selected ion monitoring mode (SIM) using one target and two qualitative ions for each analyte. Chlorpyrifos-d10 was used as an internal standard. The lowest limit of detection was 0.3μgkg−1 for some pesticides. The recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) were checked by spiking untreated samples with pesticides at 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2mgkg−1. The average recoveries of most pesticides were from 62.6% to 107.8%. The precision values expressed as RSD were all ⩽20.5% (n=6). Good linearity (r⩾0.99) was observed between 0.05 and 1.5μgmL−1.

Abstract:Extensive usage of pesticides in agriculture has imposed a serious problem to human health and environment worldwide. A lot of efforts have been made to develop convenient and effective methods for pesticide residue analysis. As a simple, rapid, sensitive and accurate analytical technique, amperometry has drawn more and more attentions in this area within the last few years. The research has been focused on fabrication and modification of different working electrodes to optimize their performance, mainly to improve sensitivity and lower detection limit. The recent progress on amperometric detection for pesticides to be reviewed is brought under three main headings: general electrodes, modified electrodes and microelectrodes as working electrodes in the analysis systems. It is envisaged that integration and portability are the development trend, of electrochemical determination system for pesticide residue analysis.

Abstract:A high performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometric method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of nine carbamate pesticide residues in grains. Carbamate pesticides were extracted with acetonitrile, cleaned up with neutral-alumina column, and then analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray (HPLC-ESI) (+) -tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Sample pre-treatment and LC-MS/MS analytical conditions were optimized. The linear range was 0. 1 - 100 g/L, the correlation coefficients were 0. 9986 - 0. 9998. The average recovenies of nine carbamate pesticides in spiked grains (from 0. 001 to 0. 05 mg/Kg) ranged from 73. 40% to 102. 0%, and the relative standard deviation were between 1. 3% and 9. 9%. The results indicate that the method developed is easier, faster, more sensitive and has a better purification effect. It also demonstrats that this multiresidue analysis method can meet the requirements for simultaneous determination of many carbamate pesticides in grains for import & export inspection.

Abstract:The principal intention of this study is presenting the attempts carried out for extracting, separating, and determining of the pesticide and insecticide residues existing in food and plant samples. In this regard, a set of content, including the explanations about the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), supercritical fluid chromatography, and various types of pesticides are indicated. Besides, the parameters affecting the pesticides extraction composed of temperature, pressure, modifier, drying agent, and so on are discussed. Also, examples of insecticides extraction by SFE technique as an important subset of pesticides are indicated. Along with these items, some interesting works, concerning the innovations implemented in the field of SFE of pesticide and insecticide residues from foodstuff and plants are depicted.

Abstract:Pesticides, widely applied in agriculture, can produce a variety of transformation products and their continuous use causes deleterious effects to ecosystem. Efficient and sensitive analytical techniques for enrichment and analysis of pesticides samples are highly required. Compared with other extraction methods, solid-phase micro extraction is a solvent free, cost effective, robust, versatile, and high throughput sample preparation technique, especially for the analysis of pesticides from complicated matrices. Coupling of solid-phase micro extraction with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry has been extensively applied in pesticide analysis. On the other hand, in recent years, combination of fast separation using solid-phase micro extraction and rapid detection using ambient mass spectrometry is providing highly efficient pesticide screening. This article summarizes the applications of solid-phase micro extraction coupled to mass spectrometry for pesticides analysis.

Abstract:The current methods to prepare and determine pesticide residues in Chinese herbal medicine were summarized in this paper. In addition,the new techniques to prepare and determine pesticide residues used in recent years was reviewed, which included solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) , supercritical fluid extraction ( SFE) , accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) , immune affinity chromatography (IAC), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), column switching high performance liquid chromatography (CSHPLC), high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) , and immune analysis (IA), etc. To sum up, these would bring a great progress in analysis of the pesticide residues in Chinese herbal medicine, and make it more rapidly, accurately and normatively.

Abstract:To protect crops and improve yield, pesticides have been widely used in agricultural production. In this case, the detection of toxic residues in agricultural products is of great significance. To achieve that, spectroscopy is a commonly used analytical method, which combines the characteristics of low detection limit, wide linear range and high accuracy. At the same time, they provide simple, low-cost, fast and on-site results. The pesticide residue detection instruments based on spectral analysis have shown advantages and broad application prospects in the instrument market. In this paper, detection methods of pesticide residues based on fluorescence spectrometry, UV–vis (ultraviolet visible) spectrometry, as well as SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) spectrometry are reviewed. This paper analyses and summarizes the research progress of different types of spectrometry in the detection of pesticide residues, and points out that with the development of detection and monitoring technology, the corresponding rapid detection instrument for pesticide residues has become an indispensable tool in society.

Abstract:A multi-residue method for the determination of 70 pesticides in fruits and veg- etables by means of LC-MS/MS is presented.The pesticides were extracted by acetonitrile,pu- rified using SPE and finally detected by LC-MS/MS within 35 minutes.The method is proved to be linear obtaining correlation coefficients from 0.995 to 1.000 over the range 0.01～2.00 μg/mL.The obtained recoveries are in the range 70%～120% and the LOD is 10 μg/kg.The LOD,recovery and RSD can meet the demands of the analysis of pesticide residue.

Abstract:A method has been developed for the determination of 33 pesticide residues in tea, including organophosphorous, organochlorine and pyrethroid pesticides. The target analytes were extracted with the solution of acetone/dichloromethane (1:1, v/v) using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and then purified using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) to eliminate most of the coextracts, such as pigments, lipids and waxes. They were further purified using Carb-NH2 and Florisil solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges prior to the identification using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The quantitative analysis was performed with flame photometric detector (FPD) for organophosphorous pesticides and electron capture detector (ECD) for organochlorine and pyrethroid pesticides. At the spiked level of 0.05 mg/kg, the recoveries for most pesticides were between 70%–120%; the relative standard deviations were less than 20%; the limits of detection varied from 0.005 to 0.05 mg/kg (defined in terms of 10 times of the baseline noise). This method is precise, sensitive and highly efficient in extraction. After routine applications, the results indicated that this method is suitable for the determination of pesticide residues in the tea for export.

Abstract:Recently, supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has attracted considerable attention for their application in food analysis. The use of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2), as a mobile phase for SFC, with its low viscosity and high molecular diffusiveness, results in shorter analysis time and lower consumption of organic solvents as compared to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In addition, with recent improvements in its detection system, SFC has shown satisfactory selectivity and sensitivity. Thus, although the composition of food is complex, SFC remains a powerful tool in food analysis with some simple sample pretreatment techniques, such as liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, and QuEChERS. Here, we summarize the applications of SFC in food quality and safety from 2012 to 2018, and mainly focus on sample pretreatment strategies and analysis conditions.

Abstract:Food safety is a significant issue that affects people worldwide and is tied to their lives and health. The issue of pesticide residues in food is just one of many issues related to food safety, which leave residues in crops and are transferred through the food chain to human consumption. Foods contaminated with pesticide residues pose a serious risk to human health, including carcinogenicity, neurotoxicity, and endocrine disruption. Although traditional methods, including gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, chromatography, and mass spectrometry, can be used to achieve a quantitative analysis of pesticide residues, the disadvantages of these techniques, such as being time-consuming and costly and requiring specialist staff, limit their application. Therefore, there is a need to develop rapid, effective, and sensitive equipment for the quantitative analysis of pesticide residues in food. Microfluidics is rapidly emerging in a number of fields due to its outstanding strengths. This paper summarizes the application of microfluidic techniques to pyrethroid, carbamate, organochlorine, and organophosphate pesticides, as well as to commercial products. Meanwhile, the study also outlines the development of microfluidics in combination with 3D printing technology and nanomaterials for detecting pesticide residues in food.

Development of a Green Water-Induced Restricted Access Supramolecular Solvent Microextraction Method for Highly Improved Determination of Pesticides with a Wide Range of Polarity in Water Samples and Cereal Flours

Abstract:A novel green microextraction supramolecular (SUPRA)-based method for simultaneous preconcentration of seven pesticides, acetamiprid, azoxystrobin, bifenthrin, carbendazim, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, and tebuconazole, in water samples and cereal flours with further determination by HPLC-DAD was developed. The method uses 113 μL of 1-decanol as amphiphilic extractor and 500 μL of tetrahydrofuran as disperser solvent. To perform the method optimization, a 2 5 factorial design and Doehlert design combined with Derringer–Suich desirability function and response surface methodology were used. The microextraction of the pesticides was carried out at pH 6.3 in the presence of 5% NaCl (w/v), low vortex-assisted extraction time (30 s) and it was provided high preconcentration factors (3.6–266.1), and low LOQs (8.98–29.92 μg L −1 ). The intra-day ( n = 10) and inter-day ( n = 10) precision assessed as the percentage of relative standard deviation (%RSD) for concentrations of 50.0 and 200.0 μg L −1 varied from 1.7 to 4.1%. The method was successfully applied to determine pesticides in river and lake water samples using external calibration curves. Considering the property of restricted access materials of SUPRAs, the microextraction method was also applied to the direct treatment of solid samples of wheat, oat, and rice flours. High recovery values in the range of 80–112% were obtained, thereby proving the absence of possible interference from matrix components.

Abstract:Introduction: Pollution has emerged as a significant threat to humanity, necessitating a thorough evaluation of its impacts. As a result, various methods for human biomonitoring have been proposed as vital tools for assessing, managing, and mitigating exposure risks. Among these methods, urine stands out as the most commonly analyzed biological sample and the primary matrix for biomonitoring studies. Objectives: This review concentrates on exploring the literature concerning residual pesticide determination in urine, utilizing liquid and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and its practical applications. Method: The examination focused on methods developed since 2010. Additionally, applications reported between 2015 and 2022 were thoroughly reviewed, utilizing Web of Science as a primary resource. Synthesis: Recent advancements in chromatography-mass spectrometry technology have significantly enhanced the development of multi-residue methods. These determinations are now capable of simultaneously detecting numerous pesticide residues from various chemical and use classes. Furthermore, these methods encompass analytes from a variety of environmental contaminants, offering a comprehensive approach to biomonitoring. These methodologies have been employed across diverse perspectives, including toxicological studies, assessing pesticide exposure in the general population, occupational exposure among farmers, pest control workers, horticulturists, and florists, as well as investigating consequences during pregnancy and childhood, neurodevelopmental impacts, and reproductive disorders. Future directions: Such strategies were essential in examining the health risks associated with exposure to complex mixtures, including pesticides and other relevant compounds, thereby painting a broader and more accurate picture of human exposure. Moreover, the implementation of integrated strategies, involving international research initiatives and biomonitoring programs, is crucial to optimize resource utilization, enhancing efficiency in health risk assessment.

Abstract:The analysis of pesticide residues in food is nowadays an increasingly important task. Quality control has to be very strict in order to safeguard the consumers’ health. One of the most important goals of food quality assurance is testing food for residues and contaminants. Among chemical hazards, the contamination of food with pesticides has been characterized as a significant source of many serious diseases. Consumption of food containing pesticide residues may cause cancer, malformations, and damage to the endocrine, nervous, and immune system. In order to assure human food safety, The European Community has established maximum residue limits (MRL) of pesticides permitted in products of animal or vegetable origin that are intended for human consumption. In the EU, Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005 of the European Parliament and Council on pesticide residues established the levels of pesticide residues allowed in food and feed. To ensure the compliance of marketed food commodities with the law on food safety, sensitive and reliable analytical methods for the determination of pesticide residues are required. Multiresidue liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods (LC-MS) are widely recognized as an ideal, highly specific, and extremely sensitive technique for testing food products. This review discusses LC-MS approaches applied most widely to pesticide residue analysis over the last few years. The main ionization methods and MS detectors used as analytical tools in quantification and/or identification/confirmation of pesticide residues in food are presented.

Abstract:The excessive use or abuse of pesticides and veterinary drugs leads to residues in food, which can threaten human health. Therefore, there is an extremely urgent need for multi-analyte analysis techniques for the detection of pesticide and veterinary drug residues, which can be applied as screening techniques for food safety monitoring and detection. Recent developments related to rapid multi-residue detection methods for pesticide and veterinary drug residues are reviewed herein. Methods based on different recognition elements or the inherent characteristics of pesticides and veterinary drugs are described in detail. The preparation and application of three broadly specific recognition elements—antibodies, aptamers, and molecular imprinted polymers—are summarized. Furthermore, enzymatic inhibition-based sensors, near-infrared spectroscopy, and SERS spectroscopy based on the inherent characteristics are also discussed. The aim of this review is to provide a useful reference for the further development of rapid multi-analyte analysis of pesticide and veterinary drug residues.
