Abstract:A description is given of two short-range developments aimed at providing weldable heavy-plate titanium alloys for structures in weight-critical marine applications. One is a near-alpha alloy, Ti-6Al-2Cb-1Ta-0·8Mo, having a yield strength of about 100,000psi. The other is an annealed alpha-beta alloy, Ti-6Al-4V (ELI) having a yield strength of about 120,000psi. The rationale for compositional control to avoid stress-corrosion susceptibility is described. Typical properties of base plates and weldments are given. Stress relief and creep characteristics are also discussed.

Abstract:Titanium alloys have been widely used in fields such as medicine and marine, because of their excellent corrosion resistance. In this paper, the methods and mechanisms of improving the corrosion properties of titanium alloys by alloying are reviewed. The corrosion properties of titanium alloys can be enhanced by adding specific alloying elements, which can refine the structure, and produce a new phase which has better corrosion resistance. The addition of alloying elements such as Nb and Zr can also lead to the formation of oxides, which form passive films together with titanium oxides. The addition of certain alloying elements can enhance the stability of the passive film, thereby improving corrosion properties. The comprehensive considerations of the interactions between the alloy matrix and elements, the influences of alloy elements on the microstructure and passive films of titanium alloys, and the formations of new phases are essential when selecting alloy elements to enhance the corrosion properties of titanium alloys. The future development trends of integrating artificial intelligence methods into material design and alloying to enhance material properties are anticipated.

Providing an outline of general characteristics and types of titanium alloys, this article discusses the contemporary technology of titanium along with its market developments. It also discusses the application of titanium and titanium alloys in corrosive environments and in aerospace and automotive industries. The article describes the developments in titanium processing and materials technologies, which include the development of sponge production and melting processes, oxide dispersion-strengthened alloys by powder metallurgy techniques, titanium-base intermetallic compounds, and titanium-matrix composites.

Abstract:Lightweight materials constitute the backbone of the competitive advantage of modern aerospace structures. These materials are important because they enable achievement of high structural efficiency which is essential for high performance under a variety of operating conditions. The selection of materials and of material conditions for lightweight structures is typically a problem bounded by multiple constraints, requiring a detailed understanding of all the materials characteristics and all aspects of mechanical behavior. The current material choices available to the designers of high performance structures include high strength steel or aluminum alloys, polymer matrix composites and titanium alloys. The factors that determine which of these represent the best choice include: the operating temperature, the design limiting property (strength, stiffness, fatigue, etc.), the volume or space available, cost considerations, the operating environment, fabrication and other manufacturing requirements, the intended service lifetime of the component and the total number of components required (lot size). Obviously, this is a formidable list of constraints, but for a given application, any of these can affect the ultimate choice of material. One objective of this chapter is an attempt at discussing how Ti alloys compare to other materials under these constraints and how such comparisons affect the usage of Ti alloys for high performance aerospace structures, especially aircraft and aircraft engines. Other objectives include a general description of the characteristics of Ti alloys because these affect their behavior which can dictate the limiting conditions under which they can be efficiently used, and a discussion of the range of properties that can be obtained by changes in processing.

Abstract:β-Ti alloys have been used in many military/commercial aircraft since 1950s. Their high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, and high formability meet the special requirement of certain structures. Despite a further understanding of the relationship among chemistry, processing, and microstructure, as well as the expanding of performance data base, there is some stagnation in commercialization of new alloys over the past 20 years. This paper reviews the development and applications of β-Ti alloys, and summarizes the important processing parameters for microstructure control. The widely used 5 kinds of high-strength β-Ti alloys are discussed based on their processing-microstructure-property relationship. From the cost and performance perspectives, the challenges and opportunities of β-Ti alloys are identified. Future research will be focused on alloy compositions with more robust processing widows and better performance matching. The integrated computational materials design technology will be a prospect to accelerate the workflow development of chemistry-processing- microstructure-performance for high strength β-Ti alloys.

Abstract:Abstract The combination of high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance makes titanium the best material choice for many critical applications. This article begins with a description of the historical perspective of titanium casting technology. It discusses the types of molding methods, such as rammed graphite molding and lost-wax investment molding. The article provides information on the casting design, melting, postcasting, and pouring practices. It describes the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6AI-4V alloy. The article examines the product applications of titanium alloy castings. The tensile properties, standard industry specifications, and chemical compositions of various titanium alloy castings are tabulated.

Abstract:Titanium alloy has been widely used in Marine pipeline system because of its excellent corrosion resistance. However, there are differences in microstructure and electrochemical properties because of the heterogeneous structure of the welded joint, the corrosion behavior is often different. In this paper, the corrosion behavior of TA2 titanium alloy welded joint in seawater at different temperatures was studied by traditional macro electrochemical test analysis combined with microelectrode array test and surface morphology analysis. Conventional macroscopic electrochemical analysis results show that the corrosion resistance of heat-affected zone is always the best, followed by the base metal and the weld. And the higher the temperature, the easier the formation of passivation film. The results of microelectrode array test show that the heat-affected zone is always the cathode region of the whole welded joint, and part of the cathode near the base metal region has the largest current density, which acts as the main cathode to slow down corrosion. At slightly higher temperatures, the polarity deflection will occur in the base metal zone and weld zone due to the different formation speeds of passivation film in early corrosion stage. With the prolongation of corrosion time, the base metal eventually becomes the cathode zone and the weld zone eventually becomes the anode zone.

Abstract:Titanium alloys have emerged as the most successful metallic material to ever be applied in the field of biomedical engineering. This comprehensive review covers the history of titanium in medicine, the properties of titanium and its alloys, the production technologies used to produce biomedical implants, and the most common uses for titanium and its alloys, ranging from orthopedic implants to dental prosthetics and cardiovascular devices. At the core of this success lies the combination of machinability, mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and corrosion resistance. This unique combination of useful traits has positioned titanium alloys as an indispensable material for biomedical engineering applications, enabling safer, more durable, and more efficient treatments for patients affected by various kinds of pathologies. This review takes an in-depth journey into the inherent properties that define titanium alloys and which of them are advantageous for biomedical use. It explores their production techniques and the fabrication methodologies that are utilized to machine them into their final shape. The biomedical applications of titanium alloys are then categorized and described in detail, focusing on which specific advantages titanium alloys are present when compared to other materials. Abstract:Improved life and performance of aerospace, marine, and corrosion-resistant systems can in many cases be achieved by increased use of titanium alloys. However, titanium alloys have shown only a modest increase in use in recent years mainly due to the combination of basic material expense and the high cost of component fabrication. One approach used to circumvent this problem is net-shape technologies which minimize costly material wastage. Titanium alloy casting technology is an attractive net-shape approach which lately has been receiving increased attention. The various aspects of the two main casting methods, the rammed graphite and the investment casting techniques, are discussed, including size, shape-making, and resulting properties, and ways to improve them. The comparison of mechanical properties of castings to ingot metallurgy (cast and wrought) parts indicates that not only is casting technology cost competitive, but many properties such as fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rate are equivalent to those exhibited by ingot metallurgy (IM) material. This results from both the as-cast microstructure and the ability to completely close internal porosity in titanium alloys by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). It is suggested that the casting factor, which is currently applied to titanium castings, is inappropriate, and serious thought should be given to eliminating this factor. Current R&D work in titanium alloy casting technology is highlighted, and some thoughts for future developments are presented.

Abstract:Titanium alloy has the advantages of high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility and is widely used in marine equipment, biomedicine, aerospace, and other fields. However, the application of titanium alloy in special working conditions shows some shortcomings, such as low hardness and poor wear resistance, which seriously affect the long life and safe and reliable service of the structural parts. Tribocorrosion has been one of the research hotspots in the field of tribology in recent years, and it is one of the essential factors affecting the application of passivated metal in corrosive environments. In this work, the characteristics of the marine and human environments and their critical tribological problems are analyzed, and the research connotation of tribocorrosion of titanium alloy is expounded. The research status of surface protection technology for titanium alloy in marine and biological environments is reviewed, and the development direction and trends in surface engineering of titanium alloy are prospected.
High-strength titanium alloys for aerospace engineering applications: A review on melting-forging process

Abstract:As a crucial branch for titanium industry, high-strength titanium alloys (HS-TAs, with UTS ≥ 1100 MPa) are indispensable structural materials for advanced engineering applications such as aerospace and marine fields. Along with the expansion of HS-TAs’ market, achieving satisfying synergies of high strength, high ductility (elongation ≥ 6%) and high toughness (KIC ≥ 50 MPa⋅m1/2) has been identified as the uppermost technical bottleneck for their research and development. To overcome the challenge, two primary strategies have been initiated by the titanium community, developing novel alloys and innovating processing technologies. For the former, a dozen of newly-developed alloys were reported to exhibit excellent strength-ductility-toughness combinations, including Ti-5553, BT22, TC21 and Ti-1300, for which the ideal mechanical performances were based on specific microstructures realized by low impurity rate (e.g. oxygen content ≤ 0.15 wt%), complicated processing and complex heat treatment. For the latter, several innovatory forging and heat treatment technologies were originated for the mature alloys to optimize their balanced property by extraordinary microstructural characteristics. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview over the research status, processing and heat treatment technologies, phase transformation, processing-microstructure-property correlation and strengthening-toughening mechanism of HS-TAs for aerospace engineering applications manufactured via melting-forging process. Finally, the prospects and recommendations for further investigation and development are proposed based on this review.

Abstract:With the promotion of lightweight and green ships, shipbuilding materials tend to have the properties of high strength, high toughness, corrosion resistance and so on. With the advantages of not corroded by sea water and high-hardness, titanium alloy is gradually widely used. Many complex curved plates are needed in the construction process of ships. From the perspective of economic benefits, line heating is a common technology for the forming of large size curved hull plate. Titanium alloy has high strength and small deformation coefficient, and it is not easy to deform by single heating. At present, there is a lack of research on overlapping line heating of marine titanium alloy curved plate. Therefore, TA5 titanium alloy is taken as the research object in this article. According to the characteristics of titanium alloy, the numerical calculation model of single heating line is established based on the theory of thermoelastic shaping. Compared with the results of real curved plate, the feasibility of the numerical calculation model of low carbon steel is verified. Furthermore, the feasibility of the numerical calculation model of titanium alloy is verified. Based on the characteristics of titanium alloy line heating, a numerical calculation model of overlapping line heating of titanium alloy curved plate is established, the temperature field and deformation field are compared. The influence factors of line heating of titanium alloy are analyzed, and the influence of geometric parameters and forming parameters on shrinkage and deflection is researched. This research can provide reference for the construction of lightweight and green ships, and also for the curved plate forming of the equipment in the fields of deep-sea exploration, seawater desalination and sonar detection.

Abstract:At present, in the aviation industry, titanium alloy is mainly used to manufacture parts such as compressor discs, blades, and the casings of aircraft engines. When titanium alloys are in service, high temperature is generated due to high-speed running friction, which requires them to have high-temperature oxidation resistance and friction resistance. If they are used in an environment with salt corrosion, titanium alloys will face thermal corrosion, which limits their wider practical applications. At present, there are many methods to protect titanium alloys. This paper mainly includes alumina-based coatings and some preparation methods. The characteristics and functional mechanisms of three functional coatings for the service environment, namely highly temperature-resistant alumina-based coating, thermal corrosion-resistant alumina-based coating, and wear-resistant alumina-based coating, are summarized. Finally, the development direction of composite coatings of titanium and titanium alloys for a complex service environment is suggested.

Abstract:The article reviews the progress made on bronze alloys processed through various casting techniques, and focuses on enhancements in the microstructural characteristics, hardness, tensile properties, and tribological behaviour of Cu-Sn and Cu-Sn-Ti alloys. Copper and its alloys have found several applications in the fields of automobiles, marine and machine tools specifically for propellers in submarines, bearings, and bushings. It has also been reported that bronze alloys are especially used as an anti-wear and friction-reducing material to make high performance bearings for roller cone cock bits and warships for defence purposes. In these applications, properties like tensile strength, yield strength, fatigue strength, elongation, hardness, impact strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance are very important; however, these bronze alloys possess only moderate hardness, which results in low wear resistance, thereby limiting the application of these alloys in the automobile industry. The major factor that influences the properties of bronze alloys is the microstructure. Morphological changes in these bronze alloys are achieved through different manufacturing techniques, such as casting, heat treatment, and alloy addition, which enhance the mechanical, tribological, and corrosion characteristics. Alloying of Ti to cast Cu-Sn is very effective in changing the microstructure of bronze alloys. Reinforcing the bronze matrix with several ceramic particles and surface modifications also improves the properties of bronze alloys. The present article reviews the techniques involved in changing the microstructure and enhancing the mechanical and tribological behaviours of cast Cu-Sn and Cu-Sn-Ti alloys. Moreover, this article also reviews the industrial applications and future scope of these cast alloys in the automobile and marine industries.

Abstract:Titanium and its alloys show outstanding application prospects in many industrial fields due to their high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, etc. However, at present the corrosion failure of Ti alloys is attracted great attention with gradual increasing applications. The different localized corrosion forms are introduced in this review, including galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, hydrogen-induced cracking, stress corrosion crack, microbiological corrosion, corrosion fatigue, and corrosion wear. Among them, the corrosion failure caused by stress corrosion crack and hydrogen-induced cracking is the most serious, accounting for about 40–60% of the actual failure accidents. The effects of temperature, pressure, corrosive media and microstructure on the failure of titanium alloys are discussed. Particularly noteworthy, F − is extremely aggressive to the passive film of titanium alloys. The corrosion behavior of titanium alloys applied in aerospace, marine, petrochemical industries and biomedical environments are introduced. In the above environments, the passive film is most easily damaged and difficult to passive in high temperature and oxygen-deficient environments. The current controversies in the corrosion mechanism have also been proposed, especially the stress corrosion that has the most serious impact on titanium alloys, and its mechanism will be the focus of future research.

Abstract:This article evaluates the fabrication technologies of titanium aluminide (Ti-Al) and its practical applications by comparing it with the well-known Ti-Al binary phase diagram and US patents. Meanwhile, by analyzing and discussing the various patented Ti-Al fabrication technologies and applications, this article discusses the applications of Ti-Al-based alloys, mainly in the aircraft field. The improved fabrication processes and new application technologies are under patent protection. These technologies are classified into six categories: basic research on Ti-Al-based alloys, powder metallurgy of Ti-Al-based alloys, casting and melting of Ti-Al-based alloys, PM and AM manufacturing methods for aircraft applications, other fabrication technologies by Ti-Al-based alloys, and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) of Ti-Al-based alloys. By comparing the principles and characteristics of the above techniques, the advantages, disadvantages, and application fields of each are analyzed and their developments are discussed. Based on the characteristics of Ti-Al, new fabrication and application technologies can be developed, which can overcome the existing disadvantages and be used to form new aircraft components.

Abstract:Aerospace industry is currently the major consumer of titanium in Russia. Shipbuilding is its second largest consumer. Oil and gas, chemical, pulp-and-paper and other industries use less titanium. In the Russian industrial sector titanium is geting more applicable. Since the 13th World Ti-2015 Conference the titanium application trends have persisted [1]. Among the major development trends of titanium alloys one should note the development of titanium alloys for deep-water marine facilities, case designs of small-size nuclear power plants, the development of additive technologies, the technologies of isostatic pressing, the development of titanium products by new production facilities, etc. Titanium is still considered an advanced structural material used for scientific and technical progress in different industrial sectors.

Abstract:The metal titanium (Ti) and its alloys have many attributes which are attractive as structural materials, but they also have one major disadvantage, high initial cost. Nevertheless, Ti and Ti alloys are used extensively in airframes, gas turbine engines (GTE), and rocket engines (RE). The high cost is a deterrent, particularly in airframe applications, in that the other alloys it competes with are, for the most part, significantly lower cost. This is less of a concern for GTE and RE where the cost of titanium is closer to and sometimes even lower than some of the materials it competes with for these applications. In spacecraft the weight savings are so important that cost is a lesser concern. Ti and its alloys consist of five families of alloys; α-Ti, near α-alloys, α + β alloys, β-alloys, and Ti-based intermetallic compounds. The intermetallic compounds of primary interest today are those based on the compound TiAl which, at this time, are only used for engine applications because of their higher temperature capability. These TiAl-based compounds are used in a relatively low, but growing, amounts. The first production application was for low pressure turbine blades in the GE engine (GEnx) used on the Boeing 787, followed by the GE LEAP engine used on A-320neo and B-737MAX. These air foils are investment cast and machined. The next application is for the GE90X which will power the Boeing B-777X. These air foils will be made by additive manufacturing (AM). Unalloyed titanium and titanium alloys are typically melted by vacuum arc melting and re-melted either once (2X VAR) or twice (3X VAR); however a new and very different melting method (cold hearth melting) has recently become favored, mainly for high performance applications such as rotors in aircraft engines. This process resulted in higher quality ingots with a significant reduction in melt-related defects. Once melted and cast into ingots, the alloys can be processed using all the standard thermomechanical working and casting processes used for making components of other types of structural alloys. Because of their limited ductility, the TiAl-based intermetallic compounds are quite difficult to process using ordinary wrought methods. Consequently, the low-pressure turbine blades currently in service are investment cast and machined to net shape. The AM air foils will require minimal machining, which is an advantage. This paper describes some relatively recent developments as well as some issues and opportunities associated with the production and use of Ti and its alloys in aerospace components. Included are new Ti alloys, new applications of Ti alloys, and the current status of several manufacturing processes including a discussion of the promise and current reality of additive manufacturing as a potentially revolutionary method of producing Ti alloy components.
