Abstract:How well one can copy an arbitrary qubit? To answer this question we consider two arbitrary vectors in a two-dimensional state space and an abstract copying transformation which will copy these two vectors. If the vectors are orthogonal, then perfect copies can be made. If they are not, then errors will be introduced. The size of the error depends on the inner product of the two original vectors. We derive a lower bound for the amount of noise induced by quantum copying. We examine both copying transformations which produce one copy and transformations which produce many, and show that the quality of each copy decreases as the number of copies increases.

Abstract:Bužek and Hillery proposed a universal quantum-copying machine (UQCM) (i.e., transformation) to analyze the possibility of cloning arbitrary states. The UQCM copies quantum-mechanical states with the quality of its output does not depend on the input. We propose a slightly different transformation to analyze a restricted set of input states. We impose the conditions (I) the density matrices of the two output states are the same, and that (II) the distance between input density operator and the output density operators is input state independent. Using Hilbert-Schmidt norm and Bures fidelity, we show that our transformation can achives the bound of the fidelity. PACS: 03.65.Bz, 89.70.+c.

Abstract:It was shown that the copying quality of the Wootters–Zurek quantum copying machine depends on the input states. So Buzek and Hillery proposed the notion of universal copying machine. A universal machine is a quantum copier whose copying quality is independent of the input states. Buzek and Hillery further introduced a class of universal copying machines. In this short Letter, we establish a sufficient and necessary condition for a general copying machine to be universal. This condition will degenerate to the Buzek and Hillery's original one when we use it to analyze the Buzek and Hillery machines. On the other hand, this result enables us to find some new universal quantum-copying machines, and it also helps us to derive some interesting properties of universal machines.

Abstract:We have found a quantum cloning machine that optimally duplicates the entanglement of a pair of d-dimensional quantum systems prepared in an arbitrary isotropic state. It maximizes the entanglement of formation contained in the two copies of any maximally entangled input state, while preserving the separability of unentangled input states. Moreover, it cannot increase the entanglement of formation of isotropic states. For large d, the entanglement of formation of each clone tends to one-half the entanglement of the input state, which corresponds to a classical behavior. Finally, we investigate a local entanglement cloner, which yields entangled clones with one-fourth the input entanglement in the large-d limit.

Abstract:Employing the general BXOR operation and local state discrimination, the mixed state of the form \rho^{(k)}_{d}=\frac{1}{d^{2}}\sum_{m,n=0}^{d-1}(|\phi_{mn}><\phi_{mn}|)^{\otim es k} is proved to be quasi-pure, where $\{|\phi_{mn}>\}$ is the canonical set of mutually orthogonal maximally entangled states in $d\times d$. Therefore irreversibility does not occur in the process of distillation for this family of states. Also, the distillable entanglement is calculated explicitly.

Abstract:In a topological quantum computer, braids of non-Abelian anyons in a (2+1)-dimensional space time form quantum gates, whose fault tolerance relies on the topological, rather than geometric, properties of the braids. Here we propose to create and exploit redundant geometric degrees of freedom to improve the theoretical accuracy of topological single-and two-qubit quantum gates. We demonstrate the power of the idea using explicit constructions in the Fibonacci model. We compare its efficiency with that of the Solovay-Kitaev algorithm and explain its connection to the leakage errors reduction in an earlier construction [H. Xu and X. Wan, Phys. Rev. A 78, 042325 (2008)].
Experimental single-copy distillation of quantumness from higher-dimensional entanglement

Abstract:Entanglement is at the heart of quantum theory and is responsible for various quantum-enabling technologies. In practice, during its preparation, storage, and distribution to the intended recipients, this valuable quantum resource may suffer from noisy interactions that reduce its usefulness for the desired information-processing tasks. Conventional schemes of entanglement distillation aim to alleviate this problem by performing collective operations on multiple copies of these decohered states and sacrificing some of them to recover Bell pairs. However, for this scheme to work, the states to be distilled should already contain a large enough fraction of maximally entangled states before these collective operations. Not all entangled quantum states meet this premise. Here, by using the paradigmatic family of two-qutrit Werner states as an exemplifying example, we experimentally demonstrate how one may use single-copy local filtering operations to meet this requirement and to recover the quantumness hidden in these higher-dimensional states. Among others, our results provide the first proof-of-principle experimental certification of the Bell-nonlocal properties of these intriguing entangled states, the activation of their usefulness for quantum teleportation, dense coding, and an enhancement of their quantum steerability, and hence usefulness for certain discrimination tasks. Our theoretically established lower bounds on the steering robustness of these states, when they admit a symmetric quasiextension or a bosonic symmetric extension, and when they show hidden dense-codability may also be of independent interest.

Abstract:This work considers a teleportation task for Alice and Bob in a scenario where Bob cannot perform corrections. In particular, we analyse the task of \textit{multicopy state teleportation}, where Alice has $k$ identical copies of an arbitrary unknown $d$-dimensional qudit state $\vert\psi\rangle$ to teleport a single copy of $\vert\psi\rangle$ to Bob using a maximally entangled two-qudit state shared between Alice and Bob without Bob's correction. Alice may perform a joint measurement on her half of the entangled state and the $k$ copies of $\vert\psi\rangle$. We prove that the maximal probability of success for teleporting the exact state $\vert\psi\rangle$ to Bob is $p(d,k)=\frac{k}{d(k-1+d)}$ and present an explicit protocol to attain this performance. Then, by utilising $k$ copies of an arbitrary target state $\vert\psi\rangle$, we show how the multicopy state teleportation protocol can be employed to enhance the success probability of storage and retrieval of quantum programs, which aims to universally retrieve the action of an arbitrary quantum channel that is stored in a state. Our proofs make use of group representation theory methods, which may find applications beyond the problems addressed in this work.

Abstract:There has been significant interest in understanding how practical constraints on contemporary quantum devices impact the complexity of quantum learning. For the classic question of tomography, recent work tightly characterized the copy complexity for any protocol that can only measure one copy of the unknown state at a time, showing it is polynomially worse than if one can make fully-entangled measurements. While we now have a fairly complete picture of the rates for such tasks in the near-term and fault-tolerant regimes, it remains poorly understood what the landscape in between looks like.

Abstract:Ordering and classifying multipartite quantum states by their entanglement content remains an open problem. One class of highly entangled states, useful in quantum information protocols, the absolutely maximally entangled (AME) ones, are specially hard to compare as all their subsystems are maximally random. While, it is well-known that there is no AME state of four qubits, many analytical examples and numerically generated ensembles of four qutrit AME states are known. However, we prove the surprising result that there is truly only {\em one} AME state of four qutrits up to local unitary equivalence. In contrast, for larger local dimensions, the number of local unitary classes of AME states is shown to be infinite. Of special interest is the case of local dimension 6 where it was established recently that a four-party AME state does exist, providing a quantum solution to the classically impossible Euler problem of 36 officers. Based on this, an infinity of quantum solutions are constructed and we prove that these are not equivalent. The methods developed can be usefully generalized to multipartite states of any number of particles.

Characterization of entanglement on superconducting quantum computers of up to 414 qubits

Abstract:As quantum technology advances and the size of quantum computers grow, it becomes increasingly important to understand the extent of quality in the devices. As large-scale entanglement is a quantum resource crucial for achieving quantum advantage, the challenge in its generation makes it a valuable benchmark for measuring the performance of universal quantum devices. In this work, we study entanglement in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and graph states prepared on the range of IBM Quantum devices. We generate GHZ states and investigate their coherence times with respect to state size and dynamical decoupling techniques. A GHZ fidelity of $0.519 \pm 0.014$ is measured on a 32-qubit GHZ state, certifying its genuine multipartite entanglement (GME). We show a substantial improvement in GHZ decoherence rates for a 7-qubit GHZ state after implementing dynamical decoupling, and observe a linear trend in the decoherence rate of $\alpha=(7.13N+5.54)10^{-3}\mu s^{-1}$ for up to $N=15$ qubits, confirming the absence of superdecoherence. Additionally, we prepare and characterize fully bipartite entangled native graph states on 22 superconducting quantum devices with qubit counts as high as 414 qubits, all active qubits of the 433-qubit IBM Osprey device. Analysis of the decay of 2-qubit entanglement within the prepared states shows suppression of coherent noise signals with the implementation of dynamical decoupling techniques. Additionally, we observe that the entanglement in some qubit pairs oscillates over time, which is likely caused by residual ZZ-interactions. Characterizing entanglement in native graph states, along with detecting entanglement oscillations, can be an effective approach to low-level device benchmarking that encapsulates 2-qubit error rates along with additional sources of noise, with possible applications to quantum circuit compilation.

Abstract:We experimentally realize the 1 -> 2 optimal universal quantum cloning machine for arbitrary qubits and the ancilla-free 1 -> 3 optimal phase-covariant quantum cloning machine for x-y equatorial qubits, which were constructed by Zou et al. [Phys. Lett. A 366, 36 (2007)]. The qubits are represented by the polarization states of photons prepared from the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The copies of each machine are shown to have almost equal fidelities conditioned on fourfold coincidences.

Abstract:It is a fundamental problem to decide how many copies of an unknown mixed quantum state are necessary and sufficient to determine the state. Previously, it was known only that estimating states to error $\epsilon $ in trace distance required $O(dr^{2}/\epsilon ^{2})$ copies for a $d$ -dimensional density matrix of rank $r$ . Here, we give a theoretical measurement scheme (POVM) that requires $O (dr/ \delta) \ln ~(d/\delta) $ copies to estimate $\rho $ to error $\delta $ in infidelity, and a matching lower bound up to logarithmic factors. This implies $O((dr / \epsilon ^{2}) \ln ~(d/\epsilon))$ copies suffice to achieve error $\epsilon $ in trace distance. We also prove that for independent (product) measurements, $\Omega (dr^{2}/\delta ^{2}) / \ln (1/\delta)$ copies are necessary in order to achieve error $\delta $ in infidelity. For fixed $d$ , our measurement can be implemented on a quantum computer in time polynomial in $n$ .

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we delve into a nuanced aspect of the distillability problem within the realm of entanglement theory, specifically examining the distillability of anti-diagonal [math] entangled Werner states under the framework of local operations and classical communication (LOCC). To address this, we scrutinize a conjecture central to the distillability issue, initially focusing on its implications in 4-dimensional and 5-dimensional contexts. Through rigorous calculations, we establish that these cases align with the conjecture. Subsequently, we broaden our investigation to encompass [math] matrices, demonstrating that both even and odd n-dimensional anti-diagonal matrices are in concordance with the conjecture, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of the distillability problem in quantum entanglement.

Abstract:Our study examines the output states produced by deletion machines, including the Pati-Braunstein (PB) and our proposed deleting machine (DM). We study the specific form of maximally entangled mixed state (MEMS) and Werner state that achieve the highest entanglement for a given level of mixedness. These states are useful in quantum information tasks due to their optimal entanglement for a given mixedness. We considered various entanglement measures (concurrence and negativity) and mixedness measures (linear and von Neumann entropy). We compared the output state of our proposed deletion machine with MEMS and Werner state, finding that our machine creates states with higher mixedness, entanglement in certain input state and entanglement parameter ( w , p ) ranges. The results indicate that our proposed deletion machine could be effectively utilized in quantum information applications, similar to MEMS and Werner states.

Asymptotic quantification of entanglement with a single copy

Abstract:Despite the central importance of quantum entanglement in fueling many quantum technologies, the understanding of the optimal ways to exploit it is still beyond our reach, and even measuring entanglement in an operationally meaningful way is prohibitively difficult. This is due to the need to precisely characterise many-copy, asymptotic protocols for entanglement processing. Here we overcome these issues by introducing a new way of benchmarking the fundamental protocol of entanglement distillation (purification), where instead of measuring its asymptotic yield, we focus on the best achievable error. We connect this formulation of the task with an information-theoretic problem in composite quantum hypothesis testing known as generalised Sanov's theorem. By solving the latter problem -- which had no previously known solution even in classical information theory -- we thus compute the optimal asymptotic error exponent of entanglement distillation. We show this asymptotic solution to be given by the reverse relative entropy of entanglement, a single-letter quantity that can be evaluated using only a single copy of a quantum state, which is a unique feature among operational measures of entanglement. Altogether, we thus demonstrate a measure of entanglement that admits a direct operational interpretation as the optimal asymptotic rate of an important entanglement manipulation protocol while enjoying an exact, single-letter formula.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement plays an important role in quantum information processes, such as quantum computation and quantum communication. Experiments in laboratories are unquestionably crucial to increase our understanding of quantum systems and inspire new insights into future applications. However, there are no general recipes for the creation of arbitrary quantum states with many particles entangled in high dimensions. Here we exploit a recent connection between quantum experiments and graph theory and answer this question for a plethora of classes of entangled states. We find experimental setups for Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states, W states, general Dicke states, and asymmetrically high-dimensional multipartite entangled states. This result sheds light on the producibility of arbitrary quantum states using photonic technology with probabilistic pair sources and allows us to understand the underlying technological and fundamental properties of entanglement.

Abstract:We identify a novel qudit gate which we call the $\sqrt[d]{Z}$ gate. This is an alternate generalization of the qutrit $T$ gate to any odd prime dimension $d$, in the $d^{\text{th}}$ level of the Clifford hierarchy. Using this gate which is efficiently realizable fault-tolerantly should a certain conjecture hold, we deterministically construct in the Clifford+$\sqrt[d]{Z}$ gate set, $d$-qubit $W$ states in the qudit $\{ |0\rangle , |1\rangle \}$ subspace. For qutrits, this gives deterministic and fault-tolerant constructions for the qubit $W$ state of sizes three with $T$ count 3, six, and powers of three. Furthermore, we adapt these constructions to recursively scale the $W$ state size to arbitrary size $N$, in $O(N)$ gate count and $O(\text{log }N)$ depth. This is moreover deterministic for any size qubit $W$ state, and for any prime $d$-dimensional qudit $W$ state, size a power of $d$. For these purposes, we devise constructions of the $ |0\rangle $-controlled Pauli $X$ gate and the controlled Hadamard gate in any prime qudit dimension. These decompositions, for which exact synthesis is unknown in Clifford+$T$ for $d > 3$, may be of independent interest.
