Abstract:Based on geological exploratory profile of 1 # landslide in Shangsan highway, numerical analysis model is established. The characteristic of deformation and failure of slope under accumulation loading is studied by using contact model of elastic-plastic material. The mechanical mechanism of occurrence and development of deformation and failure of slope is revealed. The research results show that accumulation loading on slope of loose accumulation mass directly changes slope stability and seepage condition of ground water, and reduces stability of slope mass, which finally leads to occurrence of landslide.
INFLUENCE OF CONFINED WATER ON TRANSLATIONAL LANDSLIDE

Abstract:Based on geological survey,influence of confined water on stability of translational landslide is discussed.Combining with geological environmental condition of Xiashan landslide,the typical groundwater seepage model of translational landslide is established;and the result of slope stability calculation becomes more reasonable considering action range of confined water.Based on one-dimensional steady seepage theory,calculation formula of action range caused by confined water is deduced;and then parameter sensitivity of this formula is analyzed.The calculation results show that action range of confined water follows established law within a certain range of each parameter:(1) Action range of confined water decreases linearly with the increase of permeability coefficient.(2) Action range of confined water increases linearly with seepage discharge.(3) Action range of confined water takes on parabola shape with thickness of permeable layer,and it is accelerated decreasing trend with the increase of permeable layer thickness.Calculation results also show that the stability coefficients of landslide decreases linearly with the increase of action range of confined water.
Temporary Confined Water-Induced Landslide in the Binary Structure of a Gentle Slope: A Case Study of the Fanshantou Landslide

Abstract:With the increase in rainfall, landslides occur on many gentle slopes in the mountainous areas of southeast China. Gentle slopes have a particular dual geological structure, i.e., the lower part is a gravel soil layer with good water permeability, and the surface layer is clay soil with relatively poor water permeability. Under conditions of heavy rainfall, a gentle slope with this structure is likely to collect temporary confined water. The intermittent creep of the upper slope is caused by the floating force of the temporary confined water, which causes landslide disasters. The conditions that bring about temporary confined water are related not only to the stratum structure, but also to the rainfall intensity and the initial height of the water table level. On the basis of the characteristics of the stratum of the gentle slope landslide on the front of Fanshantou Mountain, we constructed a hydrological model in GEO-STUDIO. We investigated the effect of different rainfall intensities and initial water table levels on confined water under continuous rainfall conditions and conducted a corresponding stability analysis. The results show that when both the initial water table level and the rainfall intensity are high, temporary confined water is formed rapidly, increasing the chance of a landslide disaster. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of landslides on similar gentle slopes in the mountainous areas of southeast China.

Abstract:Catastrophic loess-mudstone landslides have long been a major concern in Northwest China due to the extreme weather and frequent earthquakes in history. To investigate the potential deformation feature and failure mode of the loess-mudstone landslide under the combined effect of rainfall and earthquake in the study area, the Zhoujiashan landslide was selected as the target and detailed field investigation, shaking table tests, as well as numerical analysis were conducted in this work. The test results and numerical simulation indicate that rainfall infiltration has limited impact on the overall stability as the infiltration depth is limited and the pore pressure variation pattern is consistent both in the shaking table test and numerical calculation. In terms of seismic response, the earthquake has obvious amplification effect with the inherent period of 0.2–0.4 s. Under the peak seismic conditions of 0.1 g and 0.3 g, deformation appears at the slope surface, but the overall slope will not be completely damaged. Under the seismic condition of 0.6 g, liquefaction occurred at the sliding surface due to the rise of the groundwater level, indicating that the slope was overall damaged. In this process, the overall failure mechanism of the slope is vibration liquefaction at the sliding surface, and the liquefaction position is in the middle of the landslide. The failure mode is summarized as shearing-liquefaction-slippage. This work is expected to contribute to the prevention and control of loess-mudstone landslides in northwest China.

Abstract:An important factor affecting the stability of the slope is the fissure water in the rock mass. In this study, taking consideration in the mechanism of fissure water acting on layered rock, the related theory of rock mechanics, fluid mechanics and soil mechanics were used to analyze the stress characteristics of layered rock mass under hydrostatic pressure, water softening dissolution effect on rock mass, fissure filling effective stress, dynamic water scouring with groundwater level. Though these above study of the typical interaction mechanism between water and rock mass, the pregnancy, development, and occurring of water-induced landslides were revealed in order to assess stability of layered slope. Finally, the targeted slope monitoring scheme was formulated and the reasonable reinforcement proposal was given for a targeted specific case. The research results can provide reference for the theory of rock slope instability in the rich water stratum and the treatment measures.
The Influence of Localized Slumping on Groundwater Seepage and Slope Stability

Abstract:Transverse cracks and localized slumps frequently occur within loose deposits slopes when the slope base is removed either from natural or manmade processes. Although the contribution of rainfall to the slope failures was intensely discussed, the influence of localized slumps on hydrogeological conditions has received less attention. Usually, loose deposits slopes are composed of soil layers with different permeability; localized slumps may cause flow paths partly blocked in the permeable layer that is adversely confined between impermeable layers. In this study, a case history of such failure, Xiaodan () landslide, is introduced in detail. The localized slump caused the pressure head in the permeable layer to increase substantially, which reduced the stability of the slope. To quantify the influence, Bernoulli equations are used to analytically study the increase of the pressure head with a hydrogeological model simplified from the slope. The factor of safety assessed by limit equilibrium methods may decrease up to 20% when the 80% of flow path is blocked. Thus, we should pay attention not only to changes of stress filed due to localized slumps but also to the influence of seepage variation on the slope stability.
Influence to Slope Stability Caused by Impermeable Layer in Loose Deposited Soil

Abstract:Many landslide cases by geological investigation showed that the effect of impermeable strata was important in sliding process.A slope model including an impermeable stratum was constructed to simulate the action of rainfall and groundwater infiltration from slope back edge in order to reveal the influence mechanism of impermeable strata.Simulation results showed that the rainfall-infiltration mainly affected the soil above the impermeable stratum,including the quick increasing of water content,soil deformation,and the rapid enhance of thrust force at slope toe.The soil below the impermeable stratum was not affected.The groundwater infiltrated into the stratum under impermeable layer at back edge only affected the water content and the pore pressure below the impermeable stratum.The effect caused by the groundwater infiltrated not only increased the sliding thrust at the slope toe and the deformation of the slope body below the impermeable stratum,but also greatly increased them above the impermeable stratum.

Abstract:Local collapse or even overall movement may occur due to excavation at the slope toe, especially when there is a weak interlayer in the stratum. This process frequently produces many tension cracks on the slope surface, increases the sensitivity of groundwater to rainfall and thus promotes the development of landslide. The Houpucun landslide, which is located in Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province of China, is a typical case in which the weak interlayer and the tension crack play an important role in triggering the slope instability. In this study, the deformation process and the hydraulic characteristics of this landslide were analyzed based on monitoring of the slope displacement, rainfall and hydraulic head. The results show that the slope deformation has a strong correlation with rainfall and groundwater table. The large number of cracks on the slope surface provide favorable conditions for the infiltration of rainfall and that the hydraulic head rise rapidly under the action of rainfall. Because the mechanical strength of the weak interlayer greatly decreases when saturated, the slope is prone to failure under rainfall. Numerical simulations were carried out to compare the stability of the slope before and after rainfall. The results show that the factor of safety of the slope is close to one once the weak interlayer is immersed by groundwater. A new siphon drainage technique was employed to control the groundwater table and improve the stability of the slope, which has proven to be a practicable and efficient countermeasure for the case in hand.

Abstract:Abstract Landslides are affected by engineering geological conditions, precipitation and rainfall. It is of greatly significance to study the causes and treatment methods of landslides to prevent and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property. Base on a case of Songmu landslide, the causes and mechanism of rainfall-induced landslide are analyzed. The stability of landslide under natural and rainfall conditions is analyzed respectively by using finite element strength reduction method and standard calculation method. The influencing factors of landslide are analyzed and the safety and stability of landslide are evaluated. The research results show that the disaster mechanism of Songmu landslide is that rainwater penetrates the clay layer, and the weathered layer is easily softened when rain seepage into landslide. The low strength of the soil induces local deformation and finally occurs sliding. In natural condition, the whole landslide is basically stable, but in saturated condition, the whole landslide should be in unstable state. The formation mechanism of the landslide can provide guidance for the prediction of the landslide deformation and treatment in the future.

Abstract:Confined water is a common type of groundwater in accumulation slopes and has several formation mechanisms. One such formation mechanism is transient confinement, wherein the groundwater level rises after heavy rainfall. The deformation and failure of slopes where such mechanisms occur are related to the pressure of the transiently confined water. To explore this mechanism, the relationships among groundwater level, confined water distribution, and pressure head for the Waishiting slope in China were studied by observation and mechanical analysis, and the failure characteristics of the slope were determined. The deformation and failure of the surface soil were found to be caused by the uplift of the confined water. This did not necessarily lead to landslides; however, it caused local bending or shear failure of the surface soil. For such slopes, drainage measures need to be used to reduce the pressure of the confined water. The results of this research can help in choosing a suitable treatment for these kinds of slope failure.
RESEARCH ON RIVER-BLOCKING MECHANISM OF XIAOJIAQIAO LANDSLIDE AND DISASTERS OF CHAIN EFFECTS

Abstract:Earthquake is considered to be one of the main factors of the generation of a landslide. Especially in high mountain gorge areas,the huge landslide body inrushes into the river and barriers the river,which may further expand the disaster areas and form a disaster chain. Taking Xiaojiaoqiao landslide for example,the three-dimensional(3D) instability process of the landslide is reconstructed by using dynamic finite element method based on detailed geologic investigation results of the landslide area. With the analytical results,the forming process and river-blocking mechanism of Xiaojiaqiao landslide can be divided into four phases:(1) earthquake triggering and progressive failure of the rock mass;(2) landslide body failure and sliding with high speed;(3) impacting the opposite slope,being disintegrated,and blocking the river and forming the landslide dam;and (4) density under the impacting. Based on the geological structure characteristics of the landslide dam and the stability analytical results under different cases,the stability of the slope of landslide dam is good under natural state,but there may induce local collapses with strong earthquake;and the most possible failure model may be the gradual erosion damage of topping. As for the internal rock structure with general stability,there is little possibility forpiping failure and dam-breaking as a whole.

Abstract:This paper describes an interesting landslide located in the mountainous area of Zhejiang Province, China, which was caused by highway construction. Due to the complex geological conditions, the failure mechanism of the landslide is particularly difficult to analyze. The soil deformations were initially judged to be shallow and partial sliding. However, engineering measures used to stabilize the sliding masses failed. By establishing a comprehensive monitoring system composed of GPS, inclinometers and groundwater level monitors, the deformation of landslide was monitored. It is found that the previous deformation mechanism assumed without the monitoring data is incorrect. On the other hand, there is a large rock ancient landslide in the site, and deformation of the soil mass was caused by the reactivation of this ancient landslide. This case study illustrates the importance to deeply analyze the geological data and the field monitoring data and to correctly understand the geological conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Most deep-seated landslides are characterized by large volumes with deep shear surfaces. They are sensitive to hydrological forcing, especially in climate change scenarios. This paper studies the role of soil–water interaction in affecting the motion of a deep-seated landslide near the southeast coast of China, where seasonal rainfall combined with annual typhoons caused the instability of a previous stable slope. A comprehensive investigation consisting of field monitoring and experiments of soil–water interaction is carried out. The monitoring data show that the landslide exhibits alternate dormant and active stages, corresponding to rainy and dry seasons, respectively. The enduring precipitations predominate the landslide motion, while intensive rainfall brought by typhoon events leads to transient deformation. In addition, wet treatment of intact and reconstituted soils is adopted to mimic the interaction between rainwater and landslide material. The results obtained from in-situ and laboratory direct shear tests indicate that the soil–water interaction is time-dependent. The long-term interaction gives rise to significant strength reduction of soils, thereby regulating the movement of the landslide.

Abstract:The influence factors of a landslide deformation are complex and changeful. Therefore, ge- ological investigation is very important for evaluating and forecasting the dynamic deformation pro- cess of a landslide. Geological investigations can not only obtain basic data for mechanical calculation but also make a qualitative forecast. Based on geological analyses, it is necessary to es- tablish a mechanical model for quantitative calculation and inverse analysis. The deformation mecha- nism will be discovered by quantitative mechanical analyses. In dynamic deformation process analy- sis, it is effcient to combine qualitative geological analysis with quantitative mechanical calculation. As an example, a study result of the number 2 landslide at Lijiaxia Hydropower Station is intro-duced in this paper.

Abstract:Most landslides are induced by groundwater activity; and the stability of landslide is directly related to the dynamical variation of groundwater. Due to the slope medium heterogeneity and the slope deformation discontinuity, it is a complex process for the groundwater table variation and the change of seepage system when landslides happen. The groundwater pipe seepage system is often developed in pebbly clay slopes in the long-term geological processes. It is important to prevent groundwater table rising and to keep the slope stability. According to the study on the landslide No.6 along Shangyu-Sanmen Highway, it is found that the groundwater seepage is inhomogeneous; and it flows tubularly generally. When the slope deforms and failure happens, the pipe seepage system will be damaged due to the discontinuity deformation of the slope, which causes the groundwater table to rise fast, even to overflow the ground surface. Therefore, the slope stability decreases and the failure of the slope speeds up. The underground drainage tunnel can stop the groundwater table rising effectively; especially, it can prevent the accumulation of the prior period precipitation in slope. So it is an effective engineering measure for landslide control and is worth to be applied.

Abstract:Landslides and geological disasters occur frequently in the mountainous areas of northwest China, seriously threatening people's life and property of the region. In this study, we investigated the Lijie Beishan landslide as a typical case and combines the results of on-site geological surveys to conduct two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the landslide, evaluating its stability under self-weight, rainfall, and earthquake action. By analyzing the generalized shear strain, displacement, and stability coefficient of the landslide, it is determined that the stability of the landslide shows a decreasing trend under static, rainfall, and earthquake conditions. Landslides exhibit tension controlled failure modes under normal static and rainfall conditions, and translational failure modes under earthquake conditions. Compared with static and rainfall conditions, landslides have the largest volume and sliding distance under earthquake conditions. By combining the transfer coefficient method and the simplified Bishop method, a comparative analysis was conducted on the stability of the landslide. It was found that the stability coefficients under different working conditions were consistent with the simulation results, which verified the reliability of the simulation results. The research results of this paper will assist in clarifying the development mechanism of this type of landslides and provide valuable references for the stability evaluation of landslides in the northwest mountainous areas.

Failure mechanism of loess landslide induced by water stagnation on the combined surface

Abstract:In order to reveal the destructive mechanism of loess landslide induced by stagnant water on the combined surface, and to clarify the influence of the main control factors, this paper takes a typical loess landslide in northern Shaanxi as the research object, analyzes the structure of the rock and soil body, and the excavation and filling construction through the geohazard survey, and analyzes the process of traction sliding caused by the stagnant water on the combined surface at the different stages of the project by combining with the calculation of the stability of the slope body. Further the article analyses the process of traction sliding caused by water on the combined area due to construction by means of a discrete element model, and delves into the mechanism of strength reduction of saturated loess. The results show that: 1) the combined surface stagnant water type loess landslide has the characteristics of sudden sliding and rapid evolution, which is highly hazardous and difficult to prevent and control; 2) the slope destabilization is controlled by the engineering geological conditions, and the slope excavation changes the original mechanical equilibrium conditions of the slope, which provides the dynamic conditions for the traction sliding of the slope; 3) the change of the hydrogeological environment results in the obstruction of the natural drainage channel, which leads to the formation of continuous sliding surface due to stagnant water on the combined surface, and the formation of a continuous sliding surface due to stagnant water on the combined surface. Surface stagnant water to form a continuous slippery surface, inducing the overall destabilization of the slope damage; 4) loess strength index with the increase of saturation and the exponential function form of reduction, and when the saturation degree reaches more than 80%, the strength index of the soil body to reach the basic stability. The article expanding the ideas of landslide control and analysis, and the research results will provide a theoretical basis for the design of junction landslide management in the loess areas of northern Shaanxi.

Effects of Rainwater Softening on Red Mudstone of Deep-Seated Landslide, Southwest China

Abstract:Red mudstone landslides are widespread in southwest of China. The development and distribution of deep-seated landsides with slow inclination are closely related to the special soft rock properties of the red mudstone layers. Most previous studies focused on the failure mechanisms of rain-induced shallow landslides. Studies on deep-seated landslides in red layer zones are still limited. In order to ascertain the basic failure mechanisms of red layer landslides with a gentle inclination, a fatal landslide named as Shibangou landslide, which occurred in Sichuan, China, was investigated. This paper aims to (1) conduct laboratory tests on the reduction in shear strength of a red layer to identify the water–rock coupling effect; (2) investigate variations in the microscopic structure of the soft rock found within a red layer after rainfall infiltration; (3) discuss the failure mechanisms of red layer landslides with slow inclination. Results from shear test of mudstone from the Shibangou landslide revealed that there is a tendency that behavior of soft rock can be transferred to soil in different days of immersion. The delineation threshold of shear strength of the red layer is determined as 6days of immersion. Microstructures of clay minerals become loose and porous due to the contacts between the particles transferred from the face–edges, face–face associations into edge–edge, and face–edge associations. Therefore, the intramolecular and cemented expansions of illite are the basic mechanisms which lead to structural damage, structural decay, and strength attenuation of soft rock in red layer under the condition of rainwater infiltration.

Abstract:This paper aimed to study the soil–water characteristics and stability evolution law of rainfall-induced landslide. Taking the two landslide events in Siwan village as an example, the formation conditions of the disaster and landslide characteristics were analyzed. Additionally, the deformation characteristics and destruction mechanisms of landslides were discussed in-depth. The soil–water characteristics and hydraulic conductivity of the landslides were analyzed based on TRIM experiment results. Geo-Studio numerical software was further used for typical sections to analyze the stability of the evolution of the landslide events under rainfall conditions. The results showed that (1) The soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) inversely varies with water content volume, and the sliding body has lower saturated water content and matrix suction than the sliding zone. The hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) increases with water content volume, and the sliding body has higher hydraulic conductivity (0.43 m/d) than the sliding zone (0.03 m/d). (2) Rainfall is the primary cause of landslides, and there is a hysteretic effect. Heavy rainfall will inevitably accelerate the formation of landslides in the analysis of the deformation characteristics and destruction mechanisms of rainfall-induced landslides. (3) Compared with the engineering analogy of the Fredlund and Xing (FX) model, the Van Genuchten–Mualem (VGM) model of the soil–water characteristics test based on the TRIM experimental system can better reflect the actual field situation. The numerical simulation method based on the TRIM experiments of the soil–water characteristics test is scientifically sound and reliable for the stability evolution of overburden rainfall-induced landslides.
