Abstract:A self-made Miller soil box was adopted to perform a standardized laboratory procedure for measuring clay electrical conductivity. The effects of three different factors including water content,temperature and pore water salinity on the conductivity were studied. The results show that the relation curve of conductivity and water content could be divided into three sections. With the increase in water content,electrical conductivity of clay increases rapidly before plastic limit,and then decreases slowly after liquid limit,and it is relatively smooth in the middle. The electrical conductivity of soil is relevant to its structural phase state which is subjected to the influence of water content,and alternating layers of solid-liquid,electrical double layer and pore water influenced the conductivity of clay in turn as the main conductance pathway with the increasing water content. Moreover,an increase in temperature will lead to an increase in electrical conductivity of clay. The higher the water content is, the less the increase rate of electrical conductivity with temperature is. An increase of salinity will result in an improvement of electrical conductivity. But the higher the water content is,the larger the influence of variation in salinity on electrical conductivity is.
