Abstract:We present a shape memory polymer (SMP) surface with repeatable, very strong (>18 atm), and extremely reversible (strong to weak adhesion ratio of >1 × 10(4)) dry adhesion to a glass substrate. This was achieved by exploiting bulk material properties of SMP and surface microstructuring. Its exceptional dry adhesive performance is attributed to the SMP's rigidity change in response to temperature and its capabilities of temporary shape locking and permanent shape recovery, which when combined with a microtip surface design enables time-independent control of contact area.

Abstract:Transfer printing is a critical procedure for manufacturing stretchable electronics.During such a procedure,stamps are utilized to transfer micro devices from silicon wafers to stretchable polymeric substrates.In addition to conventional silicone rubber stamps,epoxy resin based shape memory stamps have been developed and the transfer yield is thus significantly promoted.However,elastic modulus of the epoxy stamps is too high at both glassy and rubbery states,which may break the brittle micro devices during the adhesion process under mechanical pressure.In this work,we synthesized a copolymer of butyl acrylate(BA) and polycaprolactone diacrylate(PCLDA) as a soft reversible dry adhesive enabling a shape memory capability based on crystalline transition of polycaprolactone(PCL) segments.For the sample containing 40 wt% BA and 60 wt% PCLDA,Young’s modulus was 8.3 and 0.9 MPa respectively below and above the thermal transition temperature,which was much lower than that of the epoxy adhesive.On the other hand,the soft material still provided nearly ideal shape memory fixity and recovery ratios.Subsequently,shape memory surface with cone-shaped microstructure was prepared,which enabled a heating induced strong-to-weak adhesion transition when the microstructure recovered from a pressed temporary morphology to the permanent cone-shaped morphology.Such a soft reversible dry adhesive may contribute to large-scale and automated transfer printing processing.

Abstract:This work reports thin-film terminated micro-fibrillar adhesives made of adhesive polymers and shape memory polymers as reversible dry adhesives with thermally controllable adhesion. Structurally different adhesives were fabricated by coating a continuous thin layer of an elastomeric adhesive polymer onto either a flat or a fibrillar shape memory polymer surface. Experimental results exhibited that pull-off forces of the adhesives can be up to four times different depending on thermal conditions. These differences originate from the temperature dependence of either the intrinsic adhesion properties of the adhesive polymer and/or the stiffness of the sub-surface shape memory polymer.

Abstract:As a class of smart materials, shape memory polymers have gained considerable interest in recent years due to their unique shape changing behaviors. Recent advances in shape memory polymer field have led to the emergence of various exciting applications, including deployable biomedical devices and aerospace structures. Beyond the traditional shape memory effect (one way dual-shape memory effect), the recently emerged properties (triple-, multi-and two way shape memory effects) have drastically expanded their potential application. However, these properties focus mainly on the temporary shape manipulation, and the attention on the permanent shapes has been largely ignored. Unlike the classical thermoplastic and thermoset shape memory polymers, the recently emerged shape memory polymers with dynamic covalent bonds in the network have opened up new opportunities in manipulating its permanent shape. Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. Early work focused mainly on minimizing stress relaxation in commercial network polymers to improve their mechanical properties. Since 1990's, the attention has been shifted towards purposeful design of dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties, including self-healing and thermoset reprocessing properties. Several new terms (dynamer, CAN, and vitrimer) have been proposed to emphasize the uniqueness of these polymer networks with dynamic covalent bonds. However, these past efforts have been mostly limited to basic research due to the inherently niche chemistry involved. In this article, we briefly overview recent progresses in dynamic covalent polymer networks and shape memory polymers, which sets the stage for further discussion on recently emerged dynamic covalent shape memory polymer networks. On account of the general applicability of the dynamic covalent bonds (e.g. esters and urethanes) involved as well as unique macroscopic properties (solid state plasticity), we propose that dynamic covalent shape memory polymers can form a third class of shape memory polymers, thermadapt shape memory polymers, alongside the widely known thermoplastic and thermoset shape memory polymers.

Abstract:A recently emerged reversible shape memory effect greatly extends the capability of shape memory polymers and their practical potential. Physical confinement and chemical fixation are individually known to be effective in introducing network anisotropy essential for reversible shape memory. Herein, we demonstrate that synergetic combination of these two mechanisms effectively diversifies the shape-shifting behavior. Specifically, we introduce a transesterification catalyst into a network containing two crystalline phases: poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(ω-pentadecalactone) (PPDL). The reversible shape memory behavior of the resulting system can be programmed via the physical confinement by the PPDL phase and the chemical plasticity by the dynamic ester exchange. We illustrate that the two programming mechanisms can operate in a noninterfering way that allows achieving a synergetic benefit, notably realizing a zero-set reversible shape memory behavior. Our study points to a direction in diversifying the behaviors of reversible shape memory polymers and expands the scope for potential engineering devices.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials with sophisticated yet controllable shape-changing behaviors are highly desirable for real-world device applications. Among various shape-changing materials, the elastic nature of shape memory polymers allows fixation of temporary shapes that can recover on demand, whereas polymers with exchangeable bonds can undergo permanent shape change via plasticity. We integrate the elasticity and plasticity into a single polymer network. Rational molecular design allows these two opposite behaviors to be realized at different temperature ranges without any overlap. By exploring the cumulative nature of the plasticity, we demonstrate easy manipulation of highly complex shapes that is otherwise extremely challenging. The dynamic shape-changing behavior paves a new way for fabricating geometrically complex multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.
Shape Memory Epoxy: a Systematic Study of Their Performance

Abstract:Seven epoxy-amine polymers showing shape memory (SM) properties were synthesized. Tunable thermal and mechanical properties with glass transition temperatures ranging from 44 to 93 °C were obtained by varying the molecular structures. The epoxy showed excellent SM properties with shape fixity and shape recovery reaching completeness above about 5% strains. The instantaneous SM behavior was found to be independent of materials structure or properties; however, more stringent experimental conditions were found to be detrimental to SM properties for the networks with lower crosslink density and/or higher molecular flexibility/mobility. Indeed, the impact of the shape memory cycling conditions on the SM behavior was investigated. Specifically, the deformation load, the recovery heating rate, the number of SM cycles, and the holding time in the deformed or temporary shape were varied. The mechanical and SM properties of the materials were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis in tensile mode.

Abstract:Device applications of shape memory polymers demand diverse shape changing geometries, which are currently limited to non-omnidirectional movement. This restriction originates from traditional thermomechanical programming methods such as uniaxial, biaxial stretching, bending, or compression. A solvent-modulated programming method is reported to achieve an omnidirectional shape memory behavior. The method utilizes freeze drying of hydrogels of polyethylene glycol networks with a melting transition temperature around 50 °C in their dry state. Such a process creates temporarily fixed macroporosity, which collapses upon heating, leading to significant omnidirectional shrinkage. These shrunken materials can swell in water to form hydrogels again and the omnidirectional programming and recovery can be repeated. The fixity ratio (R f ) and recovery ratio (R r ) can be maintained at 90% and 98% respectively upon shape memory multicycling. The maximum linear recoverable strain, as limited by the maximum swelling, is ≈90%. Amongst various application potentials, one can envision the fabrication of multiphase composites by taking advantages of the omnidirectional shrinkage from a porous polymer to a denser structure.

Abstract:The unique capability of topological rearrangement for dynamic covalent polymer networks has enabled various unusual properties (self-healing, solid-state plasticity, and reprocessability) that are not found in conventional thermosets. Achieving these properties in one network in a synergetic fashion can open up new opportunities for shape memory polymer. To accomplish such a goal, the freedom to tune topological rearrangement kinetics is critical. This is, however, challenging to achieve. In this work, two sets of dynamic bonds (urethane and hindered urea) are incorporated into a hybrid network for synthesizing shape memory poly(urea-urethane). By changing the bond ratio, networks with highly tunable topological rearrangement kinetics are obtained. Combining self-healing, solid-state plasticity, and reprocessability in one such shape memory network leads to unusual versatility in its shape-shifting performance.
Branched Oligomer-Based Reversible Adhesives Enabled by Controllable Self-Aggregation

Abstract:Supramolecular adhesion material systems based on small molecules have shown great potential to unite the great contradiction between strong adhesion and reversibility. However, these material systems suffer from low adhesion strength/narrow adhesion span, limited designability, and single interaction due to fewer covalent bond content and action sites in small molecules. Herein, an ultrahigh-strength and large-span reversible adhesive enabled by a branched oligomer controllable self-aggregation strategy is developed. The dense covalent bonds present in the branched oligomers greatly enhance adhesion strength without compromising reversibility. The resulting adhesive exhibits a large-span reversible adhesion of ≈140 times, switching between ultra-strong and tough adhesion strength (5.58 MPa and 5093.92 N m-1) and ultralow adhesion (0.04 MPa and 87.656 N m-1) with alternating temperature. Moreover, reversible dynamic double cross-linking endows the adhesive with stable reversible adhesion transitions even after 100 cycles. This reversible adhesion property can also be remotely controlled via a voltage of 8 V, with a loading voltage duration of 45 s. This work paves the way for the design of reversible adhesives with long-span outstanding properties using covalent polymers and offers a pathway for the rational design of high-performance adhesives featuring both robust toughness and exceptional reversibility.
A Photocured Bio-based Shape Memory Thermoplastics for Reversible Wet Adhesion

Abstract:Development of reversible wet or underwater adhesives remains a grand challenge. Because weakened intermolecular interactions by water molecules or/and low effective contact area cause poor interface to the wet surfaces, which significantly decreases adhesive strength. Herein, a new photocured, bio-based shape memory polymer (SMP) that shows both chemical and structural wet adhesion to various types of surfaces is developed. The SMP is polymerized from three monomers mainly from bio-sources to form linear polymer chains dangled with hydrophobic side chains. The hydrogen acceptor and donor groups in the chains form hydrogen bonding with the surfaces, which is protected by the hydrophobic chains in the interface. The SMP shows tunable phase transition temperature (Tg) of 17-38 °C. In a rubbery state above Tg, the adhesive forms conformable contact with the targeted surfaces. Below Tg, a transition to a glassy state locks the conformed shapes to largely increase the effective contact area. As a result, the adhesive exhibits long-term underwater adhesion of > 15 days with the best adhesion strength of ~ 0.9 MPa. Its applications in leak repair, underwater on-skin sensors were demonstrated. This new, general strategy would pave avenues to designing bio-based, long-lasting, and reversible adhesives from renewable feedstocks for widespread applications.

Abstract:Smart adhesives with switchable adhesion have attracted considerable attention for their potential applications in sensors, soft grippers, and robots. In particular, surfaces with controlled adhesion to both solids and liquids have received more attention, because of their wider range of applications. However, surfaces that exhibit controllable adhesion to both solids and liquids often cannot provide sufficient adhesion strength for strong solid adhesion. To overcome this limitation, this study developed a triple-bioinspired shape memory smart adhesive, drawing inspiration from the adhesion structures found in octopus suckers, lotus leaves, and creepers. Our adhesive design incorporates microcavities formed by a shape memory polymer (SMP), which can transition between rubbery and glassy states in response to temperature changes. By leveraging the shape memory effect and the rubber-glass (R-G) phase transition of the SMP, the adhesion of the surface to smooth solids, rough solids, and water droplets could be switched by adjusting the temperature and applied force. Notably, the adhesives designed herein exhibited high adhesion strength (up to 420 kPa) on solids, facilitated by the shape interlocking effect and the negative pressure generated within the microcavities. Furthermore, the programmable transport of solids and liquids can be achieved by utilizing this switchable adhesion. This approach expands the possibilities for designing smart adhesives and holds potential for various applications in different fields.

Robust and Reversible Thermal/Electro‐Responsive Supramolecular Polymeric Adhesives via Synergistic Hydrogen‐Bonds and Ionic Junctions

Abstract:Adhesive conducting elastomers are rising materials towards cutting-edge applications in wearable and implantable soft electronics. Yet, engineering the conductive adhesives with robust and tunable interfacial bonding strength is still in its infancy stage. We herein identify a structurally novel supramolecular polymer scaffold, characterized by synergistic coexistence of hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) interactions and electrostatic ionic junctions, endowing the robust and tunable elastic conducting adhesives with remarkable thermal/electro-responsive performance. H-bonding association and electrostatic interaction play orthogonal yet synergistic roles in the strong supramolecular adhesive formation, serving as the leveraging forces for opposing both cohesion and adhesion energy. To do so, six-arm star-shaped random copolymers P(DAP-co-Thy-co-MBT)6 are strategically designed, bearing H-bonding PDAP (poly(diaminopyridine acrylamide)) and PThy (poly(thymine)) segments, which can form hetero-complementary DAP/Thy H-bonding association, along with conductive poly(ionic liquid)s segment: PMBT, (poly(1-[2-methacryloylethyl]-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane)-sulfonamide)). DAP/Thy H-bonding association, along with electrostatic ionic interaction, can yield dual supramolecular forces crosslinked polymeric networks with robust cohesion energy. Moreover, coexistence of poly(ionic liquid)s can impact and interfere the configuration of H-bonding association, liberate more free DAP and Thy motifs to form H-bonds towards substrate, affording strong surface adhesion in a synergistic manner. This work demonstrates a significant forward step towards potential adhesives devoted to hybrid electronic devices.

Abstract:High-performance adhesives are of great interest in view of industrial demand. We herein identify a straightforward synthetic strategy towards universal hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) polymeric adhesives, using a side-chain barbiturate (Ba) and Hamilton wedge (HW) functionalized copolymer. Starting from a rubbery copolymer containing thiolactone derivatives, Ba and HW moieties are tethered as pendant groups via an efficient one-pot two-step amine-thiol-bromo conjugation. Hetero-complementary Ba/HW interactions thus yield H-bonded supramolecular polymeric networks. In addition to an enhanced polymeric network integrity induced by specific Ba/HW association, the presence of individual Ba or HW moieties enables strong binding to a range of substrates, outstanding compared to commercial glues and reported adhesives.
Epoxy-based multifunctional re-bondable polymer with self-healing, shape memory and superb bonding properties

Abstract:Thermoset epoxy resin-based materials are widely used, but their permanent cross-linked network limits their processability and reusability, which can lead to environmental burdens. In this work, by exploiting the weak reactivity of aniline to design appropriate reaction ratios, we achieved a linear link between the epoxy resin and the curing agent. This linear link, along with the crosslinking points provided by the flexibly branched polyurethanes, avoids the inherent brittleness associated with the highly crosslinked network of conventional epoxy resins. As a result, the adhesive exhibits extraordinary improvements in extensibility and toughness. The lap shear strength, tensile strength and elongation at break reach 11.9 MPa, 14.4 MPa and 607 %, respectively. The fracture toughness is as high as 109.6 kJ/m2, far beyond the existing epoxy adhesives. The synergistic effect of disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds confers the adhesive with self-healing and repeatable bonding characteristics. The multi-level hydrogen bonding and appropriate phase separation structure are key to optimizing toughness, resulting in excellent comprehensive performance. The introduction of polyurethane not only improves toughness but also enhances the interfacial bonding force between the adhesive and the substrate, broadening the scope of applications. The prepared high-performance polymers provide new insights into reusable epoxy adhesives.

Abstract:The concept of debonding for hybrid structures is promising due to its design and recycling complexities, but conventional debondable adhesives encounter limitations. This study introduced a novel shape-memory polymer fiber (SMPF)–reinforced debondable adhesive applied in the lap shear adhesive joint of aluminum substrates. Following a comprehensive characterization investigation of the SMP including new rememorization test, the SMPF was fabricated in an innovative, easy and cost-effective way. Compared with the conventional adhesive joint, this composite adhesive offered maximum adhesion strength 25% higher at room temperature, conversely, decreased 50% lower strength at high temperature by utilizing shape memory effect. It can be used for joining hybrid structures, which requires simple assembly.

Abstract:Strong adhesives as structural load-bearing materials can provide both adhesive bonding to substrate surfaces and cohesive bonding throughout the bulk material, which are widely used in the cement nail, electronic device, and automotive industries. By a molecular topological regulation, in this work, we developed a series of strong adhesives based on comb-like polymers. By systematically regulating the topological parameters including the side chain length, the spacer between side chains, and the degree of polymerization of the overall backbone, comprehensive studies on linear rheology (the terminal relaxation time and zero viscosity) and non-linear debonding adhesion (the work of adhesion) are performed on these comb-like polymers. It was found that the rheological behaviors depend not only on the structure parameters but also on whether or not the samples exhibit phase separation. Moreover, regardless of the topological structure of comb-like polymers with strong and weak phase separation, the universal work of adhesion is observed to be dependent on the multiplication of terminal relaxation time and the debonding rate, indicating dynamic control over the nonlinear work of adhesion. Furthermore, comb-like polymers are feasible to bind with diverse substrates, including glass, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate, wood, and metal. In comparison to existing works using dynamic physical or chemical bonds, molecular topology regulation is more easily fulfilled in strong adhesives without the use of additives and complicated chemical and physical modifications, lowering the barrier for practical applications.
