Poetic Jiangnan and decadent China in the vision of the empire:The image of Suzhou in jiangnan Poetry Journey by Xibei Shangtang

Abstract:In 1930, Japanese Sinologist Xibei Xiantang constructed the cultural image of Suzhou from the three levels of material, history and symbol in his book The Journey of Jiangnan Poetry.On the material level, the “Jiangnan narrative” of Xibei Xiangtang is the urban state of Suzhou under the atmosphere and aesthetic experience,and the water town travel with blurred light and shadow.At the historical level, the fine shell sweet pond shows the “historical” Suzhou through the “historical” description of the landscape.At the symbolic level, the poetic nature of Jiangnan is reflected in the pictorial, ruins and poetic nature, constructing a Suzhou with symbolic significance.However, Xibei xiangtang often reveals dissatisfaction with the social reality of China, and reveals irony to China’s modern exploration and the so-called cultural inferiority.Fine shell fragrant pond “Chinese interest” on the one hand, immersed in the reality of Suzhou landscape experience, and the historical “jiangnan” landscape reveals appreciation, but on the other hand reveals the contempt for “decadent China”, is a kind of mixed “view” of China, fine shell fragrant pond narrative also reflects the characteristics of “orientalism”.
