Abstract:The small jade bi jade of prehistory was mainly found in Northeast and around the Taihu Lake Areas.The jade found in the two places mentioned above was originated and developed in different ways.Being one of the important things of the ritual,the bi jade in Northeast appeared in groups with different sizes,and the bj jade around the Taihu Lake Areas evolved to the large-sized.The cultures in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Huanghe River absorbed those factors coming from the Hongshan and Liangzhu types,and entered to the civilization stage ahead of other areas.

Abstract:By use of proton induced x ray emission(PIXE),x-ray diffraction(XRD) and laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS),the chemical composition and mineralogic characteristics of the jade artifacts unearthed from Gaochengdun site in Jiangyin city have been studied.The raw materials used for making these jade artefacts and their resources are discussed based on the experimental results.These analyses shows that the main minerals of these 46 jade artifacts is 67.4%tremolite,and that they have good quality and may have been taken from deposits of the same mineralization type.The present study indicates that the non-destructive analytical techniques offer an effective new means for characterizing ancient jade artefacts.These research results provide a scientific means for tracing the sources of raw materials used for jade artefacts of the Lingzhu Culture.

Abstract:Samples of the jade artifacts unearthed from the Liangzhu sites at Yuhang (Fanshan, Yaoshan, Huiguanshan and Tangshan) of Zhejiang province were described. The chemical composition, phase and jade structure of a hundred and more intact samples were analyzed by the non-destructive techniques of PIXE, XRD and laser Raman spectroscopy. Results showed that the minerals of the jade artifacts mostly belonged to tremolite and tremolite-actinolite. Relationship of the civilization development in the Neolithic age and the application of tremolite type mineral in jade artifacts was discussed. The contents of rare and trace elements in tremolite jade artfacts and in mineral samples were measured for the first time. The possible mineral sources of these tremolite type jade artifacts were discussed.

Abstract:During the Longshan Era, the production and use of jade, including bi-discs, cong-tubes, axes, and other artifacts, were prevalent in several regions situated along the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River. The exchanges and interactions between them have been discussed by many scholars. Among these societies that valued jades, Ganqing region of Qijia Culture is regarded as a significant source of some valuable jade materials like nephrite. The non-destructive testing of jade artifacts excavated from the Lajia site, a central settlement of the Qijia culture, revealed a comparatively high proportion of nephrite, as well as a rich variety of materials. This demonstrates the acknowledgment and utilization of jade materials, particularly the valuable nephrite in the surrounding region. The availability of jade materials and uncomplicated jade processing created the conditions for household production of jade. Needs for ritual and exchange are considered as potiential driving force behind such production. Evidences of producing and using amazonite artifacts and trumpet-shaped tubes suggests long-distance exchange and influence of jade artifacts/materials. The circulation of nephrite materials may also have been embedded in this network of exchange.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the study of the development and evolution of ancient Chinese jade art up to the 3rd century A.D. In ancient Chinese society, jade served not just as a decorative element, it performed the function of personal identification and communication. This study analyzes the origin and technical characteristics of jade art, as well as the artistic characteristics of different themes in different periods (From a technical point of view, the most popular in the manufacturing of jade products was the deep engraving of yinke, used to create decorative elements of products, carving or relief), the development of jade art is evidence of the historical development of China, it is closely related to it is connected with the theocratic political regime of the ancient state. The main conclusion of this study is that the author confirmed that the Chinese jade culture has a profound influence on the artistic style of jade, analyzing the characteristics of jade in different periods, and ideology is one of the important factors influencing the development of jade. The novelty of the research lies in the article that the author emphasizes the culture of "funerary jade" in the development of Chinese jade art, and "funerary art" in Chinese jade culture. At the same time, author emphasizes the importance attached to "people", which may be of interest to specialists engaged in the relevant research areas.

Abstract:To explore the unique status of jade articles unearthed at the Kuahuqiao Neolithic site (~ 8200 to 7000 years ago), this paper studies the material and production processes of two pieces of jade unearthed there. In this study, micro-spot observation using a video microscope and nondestructive methods such as energy-dispersive handheld-type X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, infrared spectrometry, and Raman spectroscopy were performed. The result of the experiment showed that the two jade huangs had plain surfaces without grain. Moreover, the jade huangs were composed mainly of sericite. The huangs were found to have been produced using wire cutting and solid drilling (both single-faced and double-faced), and the entire surface of each huang was polished. We also examined early jade huangs unearthed elsewhere in China and found that the jade culture in southern China may have developed independently. These two jade huangs are also important evidence for the formation and development of an early jade culture in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
An analysis of mineral structure and chemical composition of China's Lantian Jade

Abstract:Lantian Jade is one of the most famous jades in Chinese history,but there still exists controversy among researchers in recognition of the difference between modern Lantian Jade and ancient Lantian Jade,and hence the research on mineralogical characteristics of modern Lantian Jade is of great importance in the archaeological study of Lantian Jade.In this paper,the techniques of proton induced X-ray emission(PIXE),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and laser Raman spectroscopy(LRS)were employed to analyze the chemical composition and mineral structure of modern Lantian Jade from Shaanxi Province.The proportions of several samples were estimated.The results indicate that the specimens can be divided into two kinds.The major mineral of the first kind is serpentine,the major mineral of most specimens is antigorite whose Raman characteristic peaks occur at 231,373,458,527,648,681 and 1 045 cm-1,and the formula of specimen LT2 is Na0.30(Mg5.08,Al0.14,Fe0.26)(Si4.06O10)(OH)8.However,one of the specimens belongs to lizardite whose Raman characteristic peaks occur at 226,344,379,462,623,690 and 1 098 cm-1,with lizardite being found in Lantian Jade for the first time.The major minerals of the second kind are serpentine,calcite or augite,together with minor dolomite,talc and tremolite.The formation mechanism of Lantian Jade seemed to be regional metamorphism together with contact metasomatic metamorphism.The formation process is as follows:dolomitic marble generated low temperature metamorphic mineral serpentine by magmatic hydrothermal metasomatism at low temperature,with two kinds of specimens corresponding to different serpentinization levels.There are no other minerals in the first kind,because the calcium was moved away by hydrothermal SiO2.The existence of dolomite and calcite in the second kind suggests incomplete serpentinization.In trace elements,the content of Mn,Zn and Zr is higher than that of other rocks.Both Lantian Jade and Xiuyan Jade belong to serpentine jade,but they can't be distinguished from each other by available technologies.These characteristics can provide useful data for the study of archaeology and civilization of Lantian Jade.

Abstract:As an classical book which disputes endlessly on the completed time but systematic and detailed record on official function, rituals and sacrificial vessels, Zhouli (Rites of Zhou) has become a paradoxical existence: on the one hand, it’s a crucial reference document frequently quoted for reconstructing the propriety in the past dynasties and explaining the ritual remains in modern archeology; on the other hand, its authenticity and edition age are always questioned. So the completed time of Zhouli is still a bottleneck problem and cannot be ignored. This article focuses on the tradition of sacrificial jade Bi and Gui based on the written documents and archeological findings, demonstrate once again that Zhouli was completed in early Han dynasty.

Abstract:For its beautiful colors,dry-green jade is very popular and has an important role in jewelry market.In order to deeply understand the substantive characteristics,the author systematically studies the chemical composition,mineralogy of dry-green of jade by means of microscope,electron microprobe,X-ray diffraction,infrared ray spectra,and discovers that this specimen contains tremendous hornblende and kosmochor,but which also contains a lot of mica that rarely appears in jade.So,considering the formation conditions of jade ore deposits,this paper preliminary analyzes this special phenomenon,and provides significant clues for the further study of jade.

Abstract:Non-destructive analysis with pXRF has been carried out for the Eastern Zhou jade artifacts unearthed from the Xiongjiazhong Tombs in Jingzhou,Hubei Province.The results provide the following information: the jade artifacts are diversified;their materials and craftsmanship vary with their functions and buried sites;and by comparing them with relevant jade stones in chemical components and combining the Raman spectroscopy analysis of a few samples,it can be confirmed that most of the decorative jade artifacts unearthed from the sacrificial tombs were made of tremolite.The research results not only provide a scientific basis for thoroughly understanding the jade artifacts unearthed from the Xiongjiazhong Tombs,but also completely exhibit the role of the portable analysis equipment in the research and preservation of silicate cultural relics.

Abstract:The physical characteristics of the ancient jades in Lingjiatan site, such as color, transparence, hardness and absorbingwater capability etc. had changed much after their being entombed for a long time. Some of ancient jades even show special phenomenon, which is denser outside, looser inside. Characterizing Ancient Jade by On-Site Analysis in Sanxingdui, China

Abstract:Characterized by various materials, types and patterns, ancient jade is a unique symbol of Chinese civilization. However, crucial information can be jeopardized by the sudden exposure during excavations, and abundant jade artefacts were stored without scientific identification in the archaeological context. Sanxingdui site was an essential center of a complex society in the Chengdu Plain in Bronze Age China. During the new excavation in Sanxingdui sacrificial area (pit K3–K8) since 2019, cabins have been used for better site conservation, providing ideal conditions for on-site study. Employing portable devices, on-site non-destructive analysis were conducted inside pit K8. The results of Raman and XRF show that the raw material is nephrite, indicating the consistency of jade material preference with the majority of Sanxingdui jade from pit K1–K2 and the majority of prehistoric jade as well. Evidence of mineral thermal phase transition from tremolite to diopside was found on the zao chisel and proved the existence of jade burning related to the sacrificial activities. The Fe content in the surrounding soil led to the red and orange colors on the jade surfaces and the neutral environment helped retaining of the original texture and natural luster of the nephrite. Based on the geometric morphometric database, the jade zhang forked blade was quantitatively recognized as the most typical zhang type only found in Sanxingdui. It is demonstrated that the non-destructive analysis is efficient to characterize the ancient jade and makes it possible to construct the database of all the jade artefacts on site, providing the basis of solving larger-scale archaeological problems that are not necessarily bounded by geographical regions or time periods.

Abstract:The oldest extant musical instruments in the world are stone chimes. This music was created by the eight tones' that could be produced by these stone' voices. Although many of these stone chimes have been unearthed from sites predating the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period in China, their discussion in archaeological reports is usually not very thorough. In this paper, the ancient and modern samples are analysed from the point of view of lithology. The aim is to explore how the ancients chose to make these stones, and to check that the type of stone from which these ancient Chinese stone chimes are made is actually those recorded in previous studies. The results show that most of the ancient stone chimes in China are made of limestone. These chimes required a material with a single, homogeneous and compact mineral composition. Lingbi chimes (a kind of lithophone' produced in Lingbi county, China, are pure in composition and have a fine microcrystalline structure, which is the best choice for making stone chimes. This paper makes a systematic study of the lithology of Chinese stone chimes. The results supplement a significant lacuna in the study of lithophone' and ancient stone instruments both in China and on a more global scale.

Abstract:Proton induced X-ray emission(PIXE),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and laser Raman Spectroscopy (LRS)were used to analyze the mineralogical characteristics of newly unearthed jade articles from Yinxu of An- yang.The mineral composition and the source of those jade articles were discussed based on the chemical composi- tion,mineral and structural analysis results.The experimental results showed that 80 percent of the newly un- earthed jade articles from Yinxu of Anyang were tremolite-type nephrite,and may come from the same mineral digging site which had better quality.Several specimens belong to serpentine and dolomite.Our research showed that LRS can be applied for identification of jade articles.
