Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively analyze the present status and developing direction of the treatment of acute spinal injury. DATA SOURCES: With theof "acute disease; spinal cord injury; therapy" we searched the Pubmed database for articles on the treatment of acute spinal injury published between January 2000 and September 2005 in English. STUDY SELECTION: The retrieved articles about the treatment of acute spinal injury were organized, and the focused literatures were selected. The papers with the same content published in the near future or in authorized journals were selected. DATA EXTRACTION: Of 62 retrieved related literatures, 18 were accorded with the criteria. Of the 44 excluded articles, 39 articles were on the same research, and 5 articles were Meta analysis. DATA SYNTHESIS: The treatment of acute spinal injury with multiple drugs of protecting neurocytes and accelerating nerve growth in clinic, anti-apoptosis, transgene, cellular transplant, and so on, except surgical intervention, reducing secondary lesion, ideal rehabilitation measure, was made into a new stage. CONCLUSION: The treatment of acute spinal injury is focused on drug and hyperbaric oxygen treatment based on spinal decompression. Rationale of clinical treatment includes different therapeutic measure according to different opportunity and different link in change of pathogenetic condition. Many new therapeutic measures are still in the experimental stage at present, but the transform from the successful empirical study of neuroprotection and neurotization to clinical application by some new skills.
