Abstract:Ceramic fiber is a kind of fibrous lightweight refractory with many advantages of light weight, thermostability, good heat stability, low thermal conductivity, small specific heat, and resistance to mechanical vibration and so on. As a result of them, it has been used widely in lots of fields, such as machinery, metallurgy, chemical industry, oil, ceramics, glass and electron. From the aspect of the ceramic fiber development, in this essay, the types and preparation methods of ceramic fiber have been listed one by one, and the author focused on analyzing the development trend of ceramic fiber and the application in papermaking industry.

Abstract:Ceramic-based nanofiber materials have attracted attention due to their high-temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, chemical stability, and excellent mechanical performance, such as flexibility, tensile, and compression, which endow them with promising application prospects for filtration, water treatment, sound insulation, thermal insulation, etc. According to the above advantages, we, therefore, reviewed the ceramic-based nanofiber materials from the perspectives of components, microstructure, and applications to provide a systematical introduction to ceramic-based nanofiber materials as so-called blankets or aerogels, as well as their applications for thermal insulation, catalysis, and water treatment. We hope that this review will provide some necessary suggestions for further research on ceramic-based nanomaterials.

Abstract:Ceramic membranes owning the advantages of mechanical and chemical stability, anti-fouling, high permeability, and good recoverability have achieved rapid development for industrial separation and pollution control. To further improve the separation efficiency and minimize the energy consumption, increasing attention is paid to the rational design and engineering of microstructures of ceramic membranes. Compared to the typical particulate powders, one-dimensional (1D) materials have been demonstrated as a competitive player that can both simply the preparation process and improve the filtration efficiency of ceramic membranes. This review will firstly introduce the types of 1D micro-/nano-materials that have been intensively used in the fabrication of ceramic membranes. Then, the benefits and concerns of these 1D materials in ceramic membranes will be detailed successively from their roles in the support, intermediate layer and top layer. Finally, the future research focus and development direction were prospected.

Abstract:Flexible ceramic fibers (FCFs) have been developed for various advanced applications due to their superior mechanical flexibility, high temperature resistance, and excellent chemical stability. In this article, we present an overview on the recent progress of FCFs in terms of materials, fabrication methods, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to FCFs and the materials for preparation of FCFs. After that, various methods for preparation of FCFs are discussed, including centrifugal spinning, electrospinning, solution blow spinning, self-assembly, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, and polymer conversion. Recent applications of FCFs in various fields are further illustrated in detail, including thermal insulation, air filtration, water treatment, sound absorption, electromagnetic wave absorption, battery separator, catalytic application, among others. Finally, some perspectives on the future directions and opportunities for the preparation and application of FCFs are highlighted. We envision that this review will provide readers with some meaningful guidance on the preparation of FCFs and inspire them to explore more potential applications.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Membrane technologies have broad applications in the removal of contaminants from drinking water and wastewater. In recent decades, ceramic membrane has made rapid progress in industrial/municipal wastewater treatment and drinking water treatment owing to their advantageous properties over conventional polymeric membrane. The beneficial characteristics of ceramic membranes include fouling resistance, high permeability, good recoverability, chemical stability, and long life time, which have found applications with the recent innovations in both fabrication methods and nanotechnology. Therefore, ceramic membranes hold great promise for potential applications in water treatment. This paper mainly reviews the progress in the research and development of ceramic membranes, with key focus on porous ceramic membranes and nanomaterial-functionalized ceramic membranes for nanofiltration or catalysis. The current state of the available ceramic membranes in industry and academia, and their potential advantages, limitations and applications are reviewed. The last section of the review focuses on ceramic membrane fouling and the efforts towards ceramic membrane fouling mitigation. The advances in ceramic membrane technologies have rarely been widely reviewed before, therefore, this review could be served as a guide for the new entrants to the field, as well to the established researchers.

Abstract:This paper puts forward the new technology of making asymmetric ceramic composite film tube. First, materials including SiC and Al2O3 are fired into the porous ceramic substrate after static pressure molding. The asymmetric ceramic tube membrane is made by high temperature sintering after reaching the required film thickness by leaching pulp and drying for many times. The high temperature flue gas composite membrane filter can be applied to remove dust and gas in metallurgical processing. SEM and EDS are used to characterize the porous ceramics matrix and microporous composite membrane. The results show that they have good pore structure and physical properties. A set of cold model test devices for measuring dust filtration efficiency of asymmetric ceramic composite membrane is designed and reasonable parameters are determined through experiments.

Abstract:Development of advanced technology and equipments on gas-solid separation has been of serious need due to the shortcomings of all the techniques currently employed for dust removal and the particle recovery from hot gases and flue gas. The porous ceramic membranes developed in last decade provide the excellent separation media and the great potential for the solution of this problem. This paper denotes to describe the separation principle of ceramic membrane filters, and research and development status. A bright future in the commercialization of ceramic filters for gas- solid separation is expected. The technology of gas-solid separation based on ceramic membranes, as a green high technology, should be paid more attention in China.

Abstract:<p>Application of ceramic membrane technology in water and wastewater is rapidly growing. Inherent advantages of ceramic membrane including chemical/thermal stability, low fouling propensity and long lifespan make ceramic membrane technology attractive, and the ceramic membrane market is expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate of 12%. Ceramic membranes could be integrated with advanced oxidation processes such as <em>in-situ</em> ozonation that cannot be applied in the case of polymeric membrane due to their potential degradation during long-term exposure. In addition, the hybrid-ceramic membrane processes such as ceramic membrane bioreactor are superior to polymeric counterparts due to higher flux, higher pollutant removal, lower fouling rate and higher cleaning efficiency. Although ceramic membrane has high capital cost, life-cycle costs of ceramic and polymeric plants are comparable. Notably, full-scale ceramic membrane water/wastewater treatment plants have been installed in many countries such as Japan, USA, Singapore and United Kingdom. Given the attractiveness of this technology, performance of ceramic membrane is critically reviewed with a focus on their applications in water and wastewater treatment under mild conditions. In addition, fouling mechanisms and control strategies are elucidated and are compared with polymeric membranes. Importantly, for the first time, the status of full-scale applications and market prospects of ceramic membranes are critically analysed to show their future potential. Lastly, future research directions such as development of cost-effective ceramic membranes, understanding the biofouling evolution and economic evaluation of physicochemical processes for fouling control are proposed.</p>

Abstract:Organic aerosols have severe effects on human health and climate change. In this study, a pilot-scale ceramic filter was used to remove the organic aerosols from furnace flue gas produced from industrial processes. The performance of ceramic filter and long-term stability of ceramic material were investigated. It showed that gas permeation flux fluctuated at a high level, which was the result of the surface filtration and special self-regeneration of the vertical ceramic filter. Removal efficiencies of TSP, PM10, and PM 2.5 aerosols were higher than 98.5%, and the rejection mechanisms were concluded as sieving, surface adhesion, and pore channel capture. Chemical characteristics of aerosol were analyzed based on FTIR spectra. Main organic compounds in the collected aerosols were paraffin binder, carboxylic acids, and esters. Carboxylic acids and esters were the products of the chemical reactions of paraffin and oxygen at high temperatures. After a long-term operation, ceramic membranes exhibited low flexural strength loss and slight variation in pore size distribution and the microstructure remained unchanged. Therefore, porous alumina membranes have potential for applications in the of removal organic aerosol emissions from industrial processes before reaching the atmosphere.

Abstract:The preparation of ceramic hollow fibre membrane(CHFM) by phase inversion process is a freshly developed novel technique,which combines the advantages of the methods to prepare organic membranes and inorganic membranes.Compared with traditional ceramic membranes,CHFMs have some special advantages,such as much higher specific surface area,self-supported,simpler technics and lower cost,et al.Therefore,CHFMs have extensive application potential and competition in many fields in this paper.The principle and progress for the preparation of CHFMs(such as Al2O3,YSZ) by polymer-assisted method,and interrelated applications(such as separated membrane,proton conducting ceramic membranes,oxygen ion conducting membranes et al) will be involved.

Abstract:Advanced filter materials with high efficiency, low-pressure drop, and high-temperature resistance are urgently needed in the field of high-temperature gas filtration. Here, an Al2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (ASZ) submicron fiber air filter paper with excellent flexibility and thermal stability (up to 1100 °C) is developed using a cost-effective, scalable solution blow spinning method and subsequent calcination. The ASZ papers demonstrate excellent flexibility and foldability, which can be attributed to the tetragonal phase and small crystallite size of the ASZ fibers due to the presence of Al2O3. In addition, the ASZ papers with an areal density of 56 mg cm-2 show a high filtration efficiency (99.56%) and a low-pressure drop (108 Pa) for 15-615 nm NaCl particles at an airflow velocity of 5.4 cm s-1. We envision that the foldable all-ceramic air filter material will provide a solution for the removal of particulate matter from the high-temperature exhaust gases.

Abstract:Ceramic fibers have the advantages of high temperature resistance, light weight, favorable chemical stability and superior mechanical vibration resistance, which make them widely used in aerospace, energy, metallurgy, construction, personal protection and other thermal protection fields. Further refinement of the diameter of conventional ceramic fibers to microns or nanometers could further improve their thermal insulation performance and realize the transition from brittleness to flexibility. Processing traditional two-dimensional (2D) ceramic fiber membranes into three-dimensional (3D) ceramic fiber aerogels could further increase porosity, reduce bulk density, and reduce solid heat conduction, thereby improving thermal insulation performance and expanding application areas. Here, a comprehensive review of the newly emerging 2D ceramic micro-nanofiber membranes and 3D ceramic micro-nanofiber aerogels is demonstrated, starting from the presentation of the thermal insulation mechanism of ceramic fibers, followed by the summary of 2D ceramic micro-nanofiber membranes according to different types, and then the generalization of the construction strategies for 3D ceramic micro-nanofiber aerogels. Finally, the current challenges, possible solutions, and future prospects of ceramic micro-nanofiber materials are comprehensively discussed. We anticipate that this review could provide some valuable insights for the future development of ceramic micro-nanofiber materials for high temperature thermal insulation.

Abstract:In this study, we used a vacuum centrifugal suction filtration technology to develop ceramic fiber filter tubes with a high strength and low pressure drop. The V, Mo nanocatalyst slurry with metatitanic acid as the carrier precursor was implanted into a ceramic fiber filter tube. By injecting NaHCO3 upstream, the desulfurization, denitrification, and dust removal characteristics of the ceramic catalytic filter tubes from 180 to 330 degrees C were investigated. The effects of the NOx concentration, the ammonia-nitrogen ratio, the filtration velocity in the ceramic filter tube, and the reaction temperature on the separate denitrification process were investigated. In addition, the effects of the filtration velocity, the reaction temperature, and the sodium-sulfur ratio in the ceramic filter tube on the simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification process were also studied. At 330 degrees C, the highest denitration efficiency was 97.62%, and the highest desulfurization efficiency was 94.23%.

Abstract:Development and application of ferrite materials for low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology are discussed, specifically addressing several typical ferrite materials such as M-type barium ferrite, NiCuZn ferrite, YIG ferrite, and lithium ferrite. In order to permit co-firing with a silver internal electrode in LTCC process, the sintering temperature of ferrite materials should be less than 950 °C. These ferrite materials are research focuses and are applied in many ways in electronics.

Abstract:With the advantage of high temperature resistance, low expansion, low density and excellent thermal stability, carbon fiber reinforced ceramic composites have a very wide range of applications in aerospace, military, energy, chemical industries and transportation. Short carbon fiber reinforced ceramic composites are characterized by simple processes, low manufacturing costs, short preparation times and automated production, can be used in fields such as friction materials and thermal protection system. This paper reviews the current status and recent advances in research on homogenization techniques, mechanical properties, thermal properties and frictional properties of short carbon fiber reinforce ceramic composites. Different processing routes for short carbon fiber reinforced ceramic composites, including reactive melt infiltration (RMI), hot pressing (HP), spark plasma sintering (SPS) and pressureless sintering, the advantages and drawbacks of each method are briefly discussed. The future development direction of low-cost manufacturing short carbon fiber reinforced ceramic composites is prospected.
