Abstract:Use cases are widely used to capture user requirements based on interactions between different roles in the system. They are mostly documented in natural language and sometimes aided with graphical illustrations in the form of use case diagrams. Use cases serve as an important means to communicate among stakeholders, requirement engineers and system engineers as they are easy to understand and are produced early in the software development process. Having high quality use cases are beneficial in many ways, e.g., in avoiding inconsistency/incompleteness in requirements, in guiding system design, in generating test cases. In this work, we propose an approach to improve the quality of use cases using techniques including natural language processing and machine learning. The central idea is to discover potential problems in use cases through active learning and human interaction and provide feedbacks in natural language. We conduct user studies with a real-world use case document. The results show that our method is helpful in improving use cases with a reasonable amount of user interaction.

Abstract:The level of web accessibility construction affects the information interactive ability of special populations directly, how to evaluate the Web Accessibility Level efficiently is a research hotspot. A part of the current evaluation metrics needs human intervention, and it requires the worker to master enough professional knowledge, at the same time, it is likely to reduce efficiency because of duplication of work. We have designed an interactive mode to aid Web Accessibility Evaluation, which uses short tutorials and leading tasks to make the worker master the necessary knowledge quickly, in additions, with the help of the mask, embedded information tips, and real-time assistant functions for the actual evaluation task, the evaluation efficiency has been improved.

Abstract:The conflict between the rapid iteration demand of prototyping and the time-consuming nature of user tests has led researchers to adopt AI methods to identify usability issues. However, these AI-driven methods concentrate on evaluating the feasibility of a system, while often overlooking the influence of specified user characteristics and usage contexts. Our work proposes a tool named SimUser based on large language models (LLMs) with the Chain-of-Thought structure and user modeling method. It generates usability feedback by simulating the interaction between users and applications, which is influenced by user characteristics and contextual factors. The empirical study (48 human users and 21 designers) validated that in the context of a simple smartwatch interface, SimUser could generate heuristic usability feedback with the similarity varying from 35.7% to 100% according to the user groups and usability category. Our work provides insights into simulating users by LLM to improve future design activities.

Abstract:Context/Background: process and practice adoption is a key element in modern software process improvement initiatives, and many of them fail. Goal: this paper presents a preliminary version of a usability model for software development process and practice. Method: this model integrates different perspectives, the ISO Standard on Sys- tems and Software Quality Models (ISO 25010) and classic usability literature. For illustrating the feasibility of the model, two experts applied it to Scrum. Results: metrics values were mostly positive and consistent between evaluators. Conclusions: we find the model feasible to use and potentially beneficial.

Abstract:In this article, we describe a new software tool that was developed for modeling human performance and mental workload in single-and dual-task situations. The tool features an interactive interface and is based on psychological theory. Using this new modeling tool, in most cases, users can model and predict human performance and workload by clicking buttons to select options without needing to learn a new programming language. They can also visualize the information-processing state of the model during simulation and compare and evaluate the simulated human performance and mental workload for different user interface designs based on the simulation results.
Who Uses Personas in Requirements Engineering: The Practitioners' Perspective

Abstract:Personas are commonly used in software projects to gain a better understanding of end-users' needs. However, there is a limited understanding of their usage and effectiveness in practice. This paper presents the results of a two-step investigation, comprising interviews with 26 software developers, UI/UX designers, business analysts and product managers and a survey of 203 practitioners, aimed at shedding light on the current practices, methods and challenges of using personas in software development. Our findings reveal variations in the frequency and effectiveness of personas across different software projects and IT companies, the challenges practitioners face when using personas and the reasons for not using them at all. Furthermore, we investigate the coverage of human aspects in personas, often assumed to be a key feature of persona descriptions. Contrary to the general perception, our study shows that human aspects are often ignored for various reasons in personas or requirements engineering in general. Our study provides actionable insights for practitioners to overcome challenges in using personas during requirements engineering stages, and we identify areas for future research.

Abstract:To deal with the problems caused by human intervention associated with the traditional methods across evaluation and redesign phases, this study aims to propose an automated method for usability improvement to ensure better operational performance of an interface. With two experiments being conducted, a performance prediction model and an optimization algorithm were proposed to integrate the evaluation and redesign phases during the interface development process. In Experiment 1, the user behavior while interacting with an interface was collected to build the performance prediction model. The predicted performance and some guidelines for interface design were then used as the objectives in the optimization algorithm to generate an improved interface layout. Subsequently, Experiment 2 was carried out to compare the performance between the original and improved interfaces. The proposed automated improvement method was proved to successfully enhance the operational efficiency and subjective preference without significantly increasing the user's mental workload.

Abstract:The existing software engineering seldom considers software usability, and human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques which can improve the software usability cannot guarantee development efficiency. Recently, more and more stakeholders and users begin to regard the usability as an important software requirement. In order to bring respective advantages of software engineering and HCI techniques into full play to improve software usability and development efficiency, the paper presents user model driven software development, which integrates HCI techniques into software development method by eliciting user model under the participation of user, HCI designer and software engineer. Applications show that the method can be effectively applied to small software development team, and can raise software usability and development efficiency.

Abstract:With the development of technology, the improvement of living standards, personalized designs that emphasize diversity and self-fulfillment are becoming more and more popular. As a result, designers must focus more on user needs. Traditionally, most of designers only focus on satisfying users’ functional needs and often ignore users’ emotional and psychological needs. This paper presents a design method that combines interaction design with axiomatic design. The proposed method first employs interaction design to acquire user needs with respect to three aspects: “people”, “products” and “environment” and then adopts axiomatic design to complete the conceptual design. The methodology is demonstrated and validated with a case study of children bicycle. The results show that the proposed method significantly enhances users’ experience of the product and meets more comprehensive user needs, especially in terms of users’ psychological and spiritual needs.
An Integrated Method for Customer-Oriented Product Design

Abstract:This paper introduces a customer-oriented design method in new product development (NPD). This method comprises of persona creation, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), quality function deployment (QFD) and usability engineering. Persona creation based on fuzzy cluster analysis is first employed to identify the typical behaviors and motivations of a broader range of customers. The customer requirements (CRs) are extracted from the persona profiles and then prioritized with a semi-fuzzy AHP approach. Using the QFD method, the prioritized CRs are translated into measurable design requirements (DRs) to set the design targets. After product prototyping, scenario-based usability testing techniques are employed to access and make recommendations to improve usability in product redesign. The above process may be repeated with several iterations until a product that more closely matches the customer needs with high usability can be designed. A new sports earphones design is given as an example to illustrate the implementation of this method.

Abstract:This work focuses on the context of software explainability, which is the production of software capable of explaining to users the dynamics that govern its internal functioning. User models that include information about their requirements and their perceptions of explainability are fundamental when building software with such capability. This study investigates the process of creating personas that include information about users' explainability perceptions and needs. The proposed approach is based on data collection with questionnaires, modeling of empathy maps, grouping the maps, generating personas from them and evaluation employing the Persona Perception Scale method. In an empirical study, personas are created from 61 users' response data to a questionnaire. The generated personas are evaluated by 60 users and 38 designers considering attributes of the Persona Perception Scale method. The results include a set of 5 distinct personas that users rate as representative of them at an average level of 3.7 out of 5, and designers rate as having quality 3.5 out of 5. The median rate is 4 out of 5 in the majority of criteria judged by users and designers. Both the personas and their creation and evaluation approach are contributions of this study to the design of software that satisfies the explainability requirement.

Abstract:As a particular type of artificial intelligence technology, machine learning (ML) is widely used to empower user experience (UX). However, designers, especially the novice designers, struggle to integrate ML into familiar design activities because of its ever-changing and growable nature. This paper proposes a design method called Material Lifecycle Thinking (MLT) that considers ML as a design material with its own lifecycle. MLT encourages designers to regard ML, users, and scenarios as three co-creators who cooperate in creating ML-empowered UX. We have developed ML Lifecycle Canvas (Canvas), a conceptual design tool that incorporates visual representations of the co-creators and ML lifecycle. Canvas guides designers to organize essential information for the application of MLT. By involving design students in the "research through design" process, the development of Canvas was iterated through its application to design projects. MLT and Canvas have been evaluated in design workshops, with completed proposals and evaluation results demonstrating that our work is a solid step forward in bridging the gap between UX and ML.

Abstract:Web user profiling, as the technology to improve the website service and design by learning the characters of the user, is increasingly used today. And the contradiction in this technology between the collection of personal data and user privacy has been attracted attention recently. To alleviate this contradiction, this paper provides a new profiling approach, namely non-violative user profiling. First, it introduces the relative works in user profiling field. A non-violative strategy is then presented. And a Markov user model is design for profiling based on non-violative strategy. Finally, we implement the solution based on non-violative user profiling approach to help the design of website.

Abstract:Mobile payment is a new and rapidly adopting alternative payment method especially in Asia. By analysing mobile payment interface usability and expanding the Microsoft Usability Guideline, this paper presented a model for studying intention to use mobile payment. A survey method was used by collecting data from 202 potential mobile payment users. The findings showed that interaction behaviour was a significant antecedent of intention to use mobile payment. Furthermore, five mobile payment interface usability factors (content, ease of use, promotion, made-for-the-medium and emotion) have positive influences on interaction behaviour and intention to use mobile payment. The findings will be beneficial for managers and developers when they make decisions on the development of mobile payment systems.

Abstract:An approach of scenario-based User Experience Design (UED) method was proposed for further exploring the application of user experiences in mobile phone interface design. The related literatures of UED,scenario-based design and scenario-based prototype methods were analyzed. The UED process was divided into three dimensions including problem scenario,solution scenario and result scenario. Through information transformation among requirement analysis,development design and design test,the UED scenario model based on design process was constructed. The interactive relationship between UED and human-product-environment was discussed,and the scenario-based UED human-machine system model was proposed. Finally,the effectiveness and practicality were verified by an example of some English mobile learning software interface design.
Usability Analysis of Web Service Behavior Based on Interface Automata

Abstract:In the Web Service world, it is an important technique that taking the usable behaviors in the existed web services provides some value-added functions by the service composition. Therefore, the usability analysis of web service behaviors is a significant problem to be solved. Based on our early study about behavior derivation for software components by interface automata (IA), a method is given for checking whether there are usable behaviors in a web service or not according to a user's requirement. A behavior is usable if it can be preserved in a composite web service under some constraints, otherwise it is unusable. Web services are described by BPEL4WS and the user's requirements are specified by MSCs. The key step in our proposal is to build an IA model for the web service behaviors. Thus, we give the transformation rules from BPEL4WS to IA. By using the algorithm of constructing an environment for an IA which had been given in our early works, the usability of a web service behaviors is checked. A case study from real application is used to validate our proposal.

Abstract:An approach to user experience oriented interface design(UEOID)is proposed for further exploring the application of interface design in handheld mobile devices.A mapping model between interface providers and receivers is put forward.The interface is divided into explicit factors and tacit factors,and the explicitization design model of tacit factors is presented.By analyzing the knowledge transformation among requirement analysis,development and design and design test,the UEOID process model is built for new software development.Taking the Olympic mobile TV software development as an example,users are asked to participate in the whole design process,and user study and requirement analysis are fulfilled with design ethnography method.With the iteration of prototype design,design assessment,system development and design,the system prototype is built and tested.Thus the UEOID theory is verified.

Abstract:The user's mental model is the core guiding theory of product design, especially practical products. The essence of practical product is a tool which is used by users to meet their needs. Then, the most important feature of a tool is usability. The design method based on the user's mental model provides a series of practical and feasible theoretical guidance for improving the usability of the product according to the user's awareness of things. In this paper, we propose a method of designing smartphone interface based on the extended user's mental model according to further research on user groups. This approach achieves personalized customization of smartphone application interface and enhance application using efficiency.

Abstract:As the traditional usability evaluation methods have disadvantages like difficult to use,unable to include many uses and ine-fficient when they are applied to evaluate the usability of web business systems,we made an investigation into automatic usability evalua-tion system for web business systems and build a prototype.The usability evaluation system takes system log files as main input and system model as additional input.The data processing procedure in usability evaluation system consists of three phases: Data pretreatment,transaction recognition,and usability evalution.Designer and developer of web business sytems can get valuable information from evalu-tion results as the reference to improve their systems,especially information about how users actually use the systems.

Abstract:Technology roadmapping is an important yet challenging strategic process involving inter‐disciplinary knowledge and requiring key decision‐makers participation. To improve and facilitate this activity, a concept of model‐based technology roadmapping has been proposed in the literature as an application of model‐based systems engineering practices to the strategic planning domain. At the same time, many modern complex technical systems are required to be not only functional, efficient, and reliable, but also useful, usable, and desirable, which shifts the focus of planning to the user experience (UX). In this paper, we developed a Domain‐specific language that uniformly represents key concepts related to the four levels essential for strategic planning in the user‐oriented business context: market, UX design, engineering design, and technology. A collaborative interactive software was developed to support the proposed methodology. As a case study, a sustainable transformation of the automotive sector was tested and implemented in the software.
