Abstract:The quantum vacuum contribution to Berry's geometric phase of photon fields inside a noncoplanarly curved (coiled) fiber is considered by means of the second-quantization formulation. It is shown that the quantum vacuum Berry's phases of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light have the equal magnitudes but opposite signs, and are therefore eliminated entirely by each other. In order to realize such a novel vacuum effect, a scheme to separate the quantum vacuum Berry's phase of one polarized light from another by using the chiral medium fiber is suggested. We think the present study might be the first treatment for the time evolution of vacuum zero-point energy.

Abstract:The Lewis' invariant and exact solution for the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator is found by making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld quantum theory. Then, the adiabatic asymptotic limit of the exact solution is discussed and the Berry's phase for this system is obtained. We then proceed to use the exact solution to construct the coherent state and calculate the corresponding exact classical phase angle. This phase angle can give the Hannay's angle in the adjabatic limit. The relation between the exact Lewis' phase and the corresponding classical phase angle is discussed.

Abstract:We apply the perturbation theory to investigate the behavior of the Berry phase of a composite system. The composite system consists of two weakly-coupled spin-½ particles, in which each particle is driven by a varying magnetic field. The result shows that the Berry phase for one subsystem is controlled by the state of the other subsystem. The method can also be used to deal with the effect of a spin environment on a single-particle system if the particle is weakly coupled to the spin environment.

Abstract:We have observed the Berry phase effect associated with interband coherence in topological surface states (TSSs) using two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy. This Berry phase accumulates along the evolution path of strong field-driven election-hole quasiparticles in electronic bands with strong spin-orbit coupling. By introducing a secondary weak field, we perturb the evolution of Dirac fermions in TSSs and thus provide access to the Berry phase. We observe a significant shift in the oscillation phase of the even-order harmonics from the spectral interferogram. We reveal that such a modulation feature is linked to the geometric phase acquired in the nonperturbative dynamics of TSSs. Furthermore, we show that the overwhelming Berry phase effect can significantly deform the quantum paths of electron-hole pairs, thus enhancing the ability to harness electron spin using lightwaves in quantum materials with strong spin-orbit interactions.

Abstract:Berry's phase is investigated for ultracold atoms in a frequency modulated optical lattice. It is shown that Berry's phase appears due to Bloch oscillation and the periodic motion of the optical lattice. Particularly, Berry's phase for ultracold atoms under the gravitational force in an oscillating tight-binding optical lattice is calculated analytically. It is found that the Berry's phase depends linearly on the amplitude of the oscillation of the optical lattice.

Abstract:Liouville's theorem on the conservation of phase space volume is violated by Berry phase in the semiclassical dynamics of Bloch electrons. This leads to a modification of the phase space density of states, whose significance is discussed in a number of examples: field modification of the Fermi-sea volume, connection to the anomalous Hall effect, and a general formula for orbital magnetization. The effective quantum mechanics of Bloch electrons is also sketched, where the modified density of states plays an essential role.

Abstract:Ever since its discovery the notion of Berry phase has permeated through all branches of physics. Over the past three decades it was gradually realized that the Berry phase of the electronic wave function can have a profound effect on material properties and is responsible for a spectrum of phenomena, such as polarization, orbital magnetism, various (quantum, anomalous, or spin) Hall effects, and quantum charge pumping. This progress is summarized in a pedagogical manner in this review. A brief summary of necessary background is given and a detailed discussion of the Berry phase effect in a variety of solid-state applications. A common thread of the review is the semiclassical formulation of electron dynamics, which is a versatile tool in the study of electron dynamics in the presence of electromagnetic fields and more general perturbations. Finally, a requantization method is demonstrated that converts a semiclassical theory to an effective quantum theory. It is clear that the Berry phase should be added as an essential ingredient to our understanding of basic material properties.

Abstract:It is shown that Berry's phase occurs not only along a continuous path in parameter space, but also in situations in which the parameters belong to a quantized space, where the closed path consists of a finite number of discrete points in this space, and where diabolical points do not exist. This necessitates that a new and more physical phase propagation rule be invoked. As an example we study diabolic pair transfer in rotating nuclei.

Abstract:By studying the topological invariance andBerry phase in non-Hermitian systems, we reveal the basic properties of the complex Berry phase and generalize the global Berry phases Q to identify the topological invariance for non-Hermitian <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://systems.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> find thatQcan identify topological invariance in two kinds of non-Hermitian model, the two-level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and the bipartite dissipative model. For the bipartite dissipative model, an abrupt change of the Berry phase in the parameter space reveals a quantum phase transition and is related to the exceptional points. These results give the basic relationships between the Berry phase and the quantum and topological phase transitions of non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract:In quantum mechanics, a quantum wavepacket may acquire a geometrical phase as it evolves along a cyclic trajectory in parameter space. In condensed matter systems, the Berry phase plays a crucial role in fundamental phenomena such as the Hall effect, orbital magnetism, and polarization. Resolving the quantum nature of these processes commonly requires sensitive quantum techniques, as tunneling, being the dominant mechanism in STM microscopy and tunneling transport devices. In this study, we integrate these two phenomena - geometrical phases and tunneling - and observe a complex-valued Berry phase via strong field light matter interactions in condensed matter systems. By manipulating the tunneling barrier, with attoseconds precision, we measure the imaginary Berry phase accumulated as the electron tunnels during a fraction of the optical cycle. Our work opens new theoretical and experimental directions in geometrical phases physics and their realization in condensed matter systems, expanding solid state strong field light metrology to study topological quantum phenomena.

Abstract:We study the complex Berry phases in non-Hermitian systems with parity- and time-reversal (PT) symmetry. We investigate a kind of two-level system with PT symmetry. We find that the real part of the the complex Berry phases have two quantized values and they are equal to either 0 or pi, which originates from the topology of the Hermitian eigenstates. We also find that if we change the relative parameters of the Hamiltonian from the unbroken-PT-symmetry phase to the broken-PT-symmetry phase, the imaginary part of the complex Berry phases are divergent at the exceptional points. We exhibit two concrete examples in this work, one is a two-level toys model, which has nontrivial Berry phases; the other is the generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model that has physical loss and gain in every sublattice. Our results explicitly demonstrate the relation between complex Berry phases, topology and PT-symmetry breaking and enrich the field of the non-Hermitian physics.
A Simple Way to Detect the State Transition Caused by the Nondiagonal Abelian Berry Phase

Abstract:In a nondegenerate syste, the abelian Berry's phase will never cause transitions among the Hamiltonian's eigenstate. However, in a degenerate syatem, it is well known that the state transition can be caused by the non-abelian Berry phase. Actually, in a such a system, the phase factor is not always nonabelian. Even in the case that the phase is a nondiagonal matrix, it still can be an abelian phase and can cause the state transitions. We then propose a simple scheme to detect such an effect of the Berry phase to the degenerate states by using the optical entangled pair state. In this scheme, we need not control any external parameters during the quantum state evolution.

Abstract:The Berry phase is analyzed for Weyl and Dirac fermions in a phase space representation of the worldline formalism. Kinetic theories are constructed for both at a classical level. Whereas the Weyl fermion case reduces in dimension, resembling a theory in quantum mechanics, the Dirac fermion case takes on a manifestly Lorentz covariant form. To achieve a classical kinetic theory for the non-Abelian Dirac fermion Berry phase a spinor construction of Barut and Zanghi is utilized. The axial anomaly is also studied at a quantum level. It is found that under an adiabatic approximation, which is necessary for facilitating a classical kinetic theory, the index of the Dirac operator for massless fermions vanishes. Even so, similarities of an axial rotation to an exact non-covariant Berry phase transform are drawn by application of the Fujikawa method to the Barut and Zanghi spinors on the worldline.
