Abstract:Field-induced ionization and Coulomb explosion of the triatomic molecule CO2 were systematically investigated by using a time-of-fight (TOF) mass spectrometer under an intense femtosecond laser field of different polarization with the intensities from 1.0×1015W/cm2 to 1.2×1016W/cm2. The appearances of the highly charged atomic ions and the peak splitting indicate that these atomic ions originate from Coulomb explosion of the highly charged molecular ions. The Coulomb explosion was proved to be a concerted process and two CO bonds broke simultaneously. Compared with the linearly polarized light, suppression of ionization occurs for the elliptically and circularly polarized lights. The angular distributions of the parent molecular ions are all isotropic. The collinear Om+ (m≤3) and orthogonal Cn+ (n≤3) distributions show that the molecule structure is being distorted and bent by the intense laser field. Analyzing the signal intensities obtained using linearly polarized light and circularly polarized light with equal electric field amplitude, the dynamic alignment mechanism is revealed to be responsible for the anisotropic angular distributions of Om+ (m≤3) and Cn+ (n≤3) ions.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated dissociative double ionization of CO2 induced by intense femtosecond laser pulses. Three-dimensional momenta were precisely measured for correlated fragmental ions CO+ and O+. The dissociation dynamics of CO22+ was theoretically simulated by using a Coulomb potential approximation. The ultrashort dissociation time (similar to 400 fs) can well explain the observed anisotropic angular distribution of fragmental ions relative to the laser polarization.

Abstract:Strong anisotropic angular distributions of the Cm+ (m=1–3) and On+ (n=1–2) ions have been observed when CO is irradiated by 110fs, 810nm laser pulses at the intensity of 1015W/cm2, which are attributed to dynamic alignment or geometric alignment. We have studied the alignment mechanism using two linearly polarized laser pulses with crossed polarization. The first laser pulse strongly depletes the second laser pulse signal that produced in the lowest explosion pathway for all different delay times. The results clearly demonstrate that dynamic alignment dominates for CO under the experimental condition.

Abstract:Dynamic processes of CO2 are experimentally studied in intense femtosecond laser fields with laser intensity varying from 1 1013 W/cm2 to 6 1014 W/cm2. When the laser intensity is below the ionization threshold, a coherent rotational wave-packet is formed for CO2 at room temperature through nonadiabatic rotational excitation. The evolution of the wave-packet leads to transient alignment. The field-free alignment revives periodically after the laser pulse is over. The revival structure can be modified by a second laser pulse for the rotational wave-packet through precisely adjusting the time delays between the two laser pulses. When the laser intensity excesses the ionization threshold, ionization and Coulomb explosion occur. The atomic ions Cm+ (m = 13) and On+ (n = 13) observed in the experiment exhibit highly anisotropic angular distributions relative to the laser polarization. Using two linearly polarized laser pulses with crossed polarization, we conclude that the anisotropic angular distribution results from dynamic alignment, in which the rising edge of the laser pulse aligns the neutral CO2 along the laser polarization direction prior to ionization.

Abstract:The field ionization and Coulomb explosion of diatomic carbon monoxide interacting with intense femtosecond laser pulses was systematically investigated by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The kinetic energy release (KER) in a Coulomb explosion causes the atomic ions to exhibit a double-peak structure. The values of KER calculated using a two-step model were found to agree well with the measured, ones. The distributions of atomic ions are highly anisotropic, having a maximum along the laser polarization axis and a minimum perpendicular to it. In contrast to the atomic ions, the parent ion CO+ exhibits a strong isotropic angular distribution. Suppression of ionization was observed for circularly polarized pulses, indicating that the dynamic alignment is responsible for the observed anisotropic angular distribution of the atomic ions.

Abstract:Coherent control is an implicit goal of quantum physics and quantum chemistry, which have been significantly developed in utilizing light to control over the dynamics of atomic and molecular systems. We show that the process of multiple dissociative ionization of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules is controllable using an intense phase-stabilized few-cycle laser field (4.2 fs, 740 nm, \(6 \times 1{0}^{14}\,\mathrm{W}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{2})\). We demonstrate that the controllable emission direction of \({\mathrm{C}}^{2+}\) from charge asymmetrical dissociation and ionization of CO dications is out of phase in a linearly polarized laser field. The strong coupling between the dissociative channels is explained with the mechanisms of recollision excitation and recollision ionization. The competition between excitation and ionization in a recollision process leads to the opposite asymmetrical property. The results provide an insight into the controllable attosecond dynamics of multiple dissociative ionization of a complex molecule.
Fully Differential Measurement on Above-Threshold Ionization of CO and CO_2 Molecules in Strong Laser Fields

Abstract:We present a fully differential measurement on above-threshold ionization of diatomic (CO) and linear triatomic (CO2) molecules in strong femtosecond laser fields (25fs, 795nm) at a laser intensity of ∼8×1013W/cm2. The photoelectron longitudinal momentum distribution of CO in the laser polarization direction shows a broader distribution near zero momentum in the laser polarization plane with a shoulder around 0.38a.u., whereas it shows a clear maximum for CO2. The relative photoelectron yields near zero longitudinal momentum are less dependent on the laser intensity. The difference may result from the molecular structure. Even though molecular targets have different binding energy and outer orbitals, the near-threshold photoelectrons have similar angular distribution, and the dominant angular momentum of the near-threshold photoelectron is L=4 (ng Rydberg state) for both targets.

Abstract:We report that multiple dissociative channels of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules are selectively controlled using intense phase-stabilized few-cycle laser fields (4.2 fs, 740 nm, 6 x 10(14) W/cm(2)). The controllable emission direction of C2+ from charge asymmetrical dissociation and ionization of CO dications is out of phase in a linear polarized laser field. Abstract:The kinetic energy release of fragment ions produced by the interaction of femtosecond laser pulse radiation with diatomic and linear triatomic molecules N-2, CO, CO2 and CS2 is investigated. In the case of linear polarization, angles at which the kinetic energy release of ions has the maximum value are different from the alignment of molecules though the kinetic energy release of fragment atomic ions depends on the angle between the laser polarization vector and the detection axis of the time-of-flight. For the diatomic molecules, the critical internuclear distance in multielectron dissociative ionization with a circularly polarized light is larger than that with a linearly polarized light. For linear triatomic molecules, our data indicate that a concerted Coulomb explosion process is a universal phenomenon in the interaction of molecules with intense laser fields, even in the circularly polarized regime. During two C-O (or C-S) bonds breaking simultaneously, the C ion obtained larger energy in circular polarization than that in the linear polarization. Different variations of kinetic energy release between the diatomic and the linear triatomic molecules are discussed.

Abstract:We identify that both the dynamic core polarization and dynamic orbital deformation are important in the orientation-dependent high-harmonic generation of CO molecules subjected to intense few cycle laser fields. These polarization dynamics allow for the observation of strong orientation effects and dynamic minimum in the harmonic spectra. The generated attosecond pulses can be greatly affected by these multielectron effects. This work sheds light on future development of dynamic orbital imaging on attosecond time scale.

Abstract:Laser-induced Coulomb explosion of CO is studied experimentally using differently polarized femtosecond laser pulses of 2×1015 W/cm2 intensity at λ = 800 nm. The channels of molecular Coulomb explosion are observed to be independent of the laser polarizations. The critical distance R is deduced to be larger for the circularly polarized light in comparison with the linearly polarized light. The initial emissions of C+, C2+, O+, and O2+ ions are anisotropic for linear polarization and isotropic for circular polarization. The suppression of ionization occurs for the elliptically and circularly polarized lasers.

Probing Molecular Frame Wigner Time Delay and Electron Wavepacket Phase Structure of CO Molecule

Abstract:The time delay of photoelectron emission serves as a fundamental building block to understand the ultrafast electron emission dynamics in strong-field physics. Here, we study the photoelectron angular streaking of CO molecules by using two-color (400+800 nm) corotating circularly polarized fields. By coincidently measuring photoelectrons with the dissociative ions, we present molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions with respect to the instantaneous driving electric field signatures. We develop a semiclassical nonadiabatic molecular quantum-trajectory Monte Carlo (MO-QTMC) model that fully captures the experimental observations and further ab initio simulations. We disentangle the orientation-resolved contribution of the anisotropic ionic potential and the molecular orbital structure on the measured photoelectron angular distributions. Furthermore, by analyzing the photoelectron interference patterns, we extract the sub-Coulomb-barrier phase distribution of the photoelectron wavepacket and reconstruct the orientation- and energy-resolved Wigner time delay in the molecular frame. Holographic angular streaking with bicircular fields can be used for probing polyatomic molecules in the future.
Three-body Fragmentation of CO2 Driven by Intense Laser Pulses.

Abstract:Dissociative ionization dynamics were studied experimentally for CO2 driven by intense laser pulses. Three-dimensional momentum vectors of correlated atomic ions were obtained for each three-body fragmentation event using triple ion coincidence measurement. Newton diagram demonstrated that three-body fragmentation of CO2 (n+) (n = 3-6) can occur through Coulomb explosion process and sequential fragmentation process depending on the fragmentation channels. The experimental data from these two processes were disentangled by using correlation diagram of correlated ions. Based on the accurate Coulomb explosion data, we reconstructed the bond angle distributions of CO2 (n+) at the moment of fragmentation, which are close to that of neutral CO2 before laser irradiation.

Abstract:Probing and manipulating the electronic motion in the ultrafast laser molecular interaction provides the pathways for quantum imaging and controlling chemical reactions. Recently, the emerging application of attosecond metrology of ultrafast electron dynamics has accessed the time scale of the most fundamental processes in molecular chemical reactions. Here, we probe the tunneling dynamics of internuclear-dependent dissociative reaction of H-2 with angular streaking using two-color bicircularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses. By measuring high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy, we disentangle the orientation and internuclear-distance dependent effect of the long-range Coulomb potential and the initial phase on molecular-frame photoelectron momentum distributions, and stereo extract the phase gradient of the tunneling electron wave packets and Wigner time delay during the dissociative ionization using two-color bicircular fields. The work has an insight into the clocking of ultrafast spatiotemporal photoelectron dynamics and the quantum control of molecular chemical processes via sculptured circular fields, which can be applied to polyatomic molecules.

Abstract:A correlated pair of an electron and its parent ion is generated when a molecule is irradiated by an intense laser pulse. The accelerated electron will be driven back when the laser's electric field changes its sign and it may collide with the parent ion. In the present work, we experimentally study the electron-ion recollision process of oxygen in few-cycle laser fields. Two reaction channels are identified through coincident measurements. One is initiated by the recollision-induced dissociation and the other by the recollision-induced ionization. Angular distributions of the atomic ions are also measured for these two reaction channels. Although the angular distributions are mainly determined by angle-dependent ionization rates of molecules, we find that they are also affected by the symmetry of the recollision-related molecular orbitals.

Abstract:The fragments from Coulomb explosion of C2H4 irradiated by 130fs laser pulses at 810nm wavelength and intensity around 1015W/cm2 are studied by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The angular distributions of atomic ions exhibit anisotropy with the maximum along the laser polarization axis and the minimum perpendicular to it. The similar full width values at half maximum of angular distributions for Cm+ (m=1–3) ions imply a geometric alignment. On the other side, the singly and doubly charged molecular ions exhibit a markedly isotopic distribution. The dependence of the doubly charged parent ion (C2H4)2+ on laser intensity indicates a nonsequential ionization mechanism.
