Expression of RANKL and OPG mRNA in apical periodontitis

Abstract:AIM:To explore the role of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand ( RANKL) and osteoprotogerin ( OPG) in the pathogenesis and development of periapical lesions. METHODS:Ten periapical granulomas and 3 periapical cysts were obtained. The expression of RANKL and OPG mRNA was detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction ( RT-PCR) technique. RESULTS:A significant higher level of RANKL mRNA was found in periapical granulomas and periapical cysts. Low level of OPG mRNA was detected in only two periapical granuloma samples,but was not detected in other lesions and normal controls. CONCLUSION:RANKL and OPG might play important roles in the pathogenesis and development of periapical lesions.
