Abstract:Ultrasonic flowmeter has the advantages of non-contact measurement, no interference, no need of broken pipe installation and so on, and is widely used. However, the transmission of ultrasonic wave is easily affected by geometric factors (such as pipe cross section), noise and airflow, which makes the quality of ultrasonic echo signal deteriorate and leads to the increase of measurement error of the flow meter. In this paper, a physical model is established based on the metering principle of ultrasonic flowmeter with time difference method, and the formulas for calculating the combined flow uncertainty of circular and square pipelines are deduced, respectively, and the effects of inner diameter, acoustic path angle, flow velocity and relative uncertainty on the combined uncertainty of flow are analyzed. The results show that the resultant uncertainty of the flow rate has a minimum value with the change of acoustic path angle θ (θ is the included angle between the acoustic path and the flow direction when the flow direction is parallel to the pipeline axis), and increases with the increase of the inner diameter and flow velocity. For a circular pipe, when θ is equal to 0.5°, the change of flow velocity u has a great effect on the combined uncertainty Uq. When θ is in the range from 15° to 75° and Uc,t is in the range from 10−6 s to 10−7 s, Uq can be controlled within 0.05 m3/s. For a square pipe, the change of Uq with θ is not monotonic, and when cross-sectional height a is different, the corresponding θ is different when Uq is taken to the extreme value. When θ is in the range from 20° to 60° and the a in the range from 0.1 m to 0.5 m, Uq can be lower than 0.05 m3/s. Therefore, in the actual application of ultrasonic flowmeter, it is necessary to adjust the individual variables according to the pipeline and the installation situation, to reduce the measurement error of flow.
