Abstract:In this study, a variable stiffness (VS) composite cylinder subjected to bending load is designed and optimized for maximum buckling load incorporating the effect of manufacturing defects. The VS composite cylinder is designed first based on theoretical buckling analysis. Then, the “homogenized” stiffness method is proposed to account for the effect of the gaps on material properties in a computationally efficient way. Finally, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to obtain optimum solutions containing manufacturing interaction. The optimization results show that the buckling capacity of the VS cylinder with the consideration of manufacturing defects is 14.6% higher than its constant stiffness (CS) counterpart and reduced by 4.8% compared to the VS composite cylinder without gaps. In it, the gaps where the circumferential angle changes from 90° to 270° are thought to be the reason for the reduction of the critical buckling load of the VS cylinder considering gaps. Moreover, narrower tow width, wider course width, as well as smaller steering radius together with aspect ratio would result in higher critical buckling load. These results offer more realistic VS composite designs to improve the bending-induced buckling performance of the cylinder effectively.

Abstract:Based on Donnell's thin shell theory and basic equations, the wave propagation method is discussed here in detail, which is used to investigate the vibration and sound radiation characteristics of non-uniform ring stiffened cylindrical shells under various boundary conditions. The structure damp effects of cylindrical shells are investigated and the ring ribs were considered very narrow, and the rib forces are considered in radial direction. The conclusion are drawn that with the structural loss factor changing large, the whole pressure level are changed little, but the peak of resonance are slacking down obviously; The shell's resonance frequency can be changed with irregular ring stiffened cylindrical shell.The work will give some guidelines for noise reduction of this kind of shell.

Abstract:In practical engineering, cutouts in thin-walled cylindrical shells are usually welded with ringed stiffeners for the purpose of connect and seal. In this paper, experimental and numerical studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of ringed stiffener on the buckling behavior of perforated cylindrical shells under axial compression. Three test specimens with ringed stiffener and three specimens without ringed stiffener are manufactured and tested. The mid-surface imperfections of all specimens are measured and introduced into the finite element model. The finite element method using static analysis with artificial damping is used to simulate the displacement controlled compression tests. Good agreement is found between the numerical and experimental results. It is found that the global buckling loads of perforated shells are improved by ringed stiffener. The larger the cutout size is, the more obvious improvement shows. In addition, effects of ringed stiffener on axial stiffness and imperfection sensitivity of perforated shells are studied in details. The relationship between ringed stiffener thickness and global buckling load of perforated shell is also discussed. Meanwhile, a critical thickness parameter k of approximately 15% is proposed.

Abstract:This paper presents a non-uniform curved grid-stiffened shell design method aiming to enhance structural performance using various stiffener patterns, allowing simultaneous optimization of stiffener thickness and stiffener layout. Firstly, the grid-stiffened cell description function is defined using quadratic polynomial functions, comprising the orthogrid, the triangle grid, the rotated triangle grid, and the Kagome grid. Then, the non-uniform stiffener layout description function is established using the sawtooth function, while a filter function is employed to ensure the smooth and continuous of the stiffeners. Moreover, the analytical sensitivity is thoroughly derived, and the optimization problem is formulated. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through three representative optimization examples: the cantilever beam, the special-shaped plate, and the S-shape shell. The study concludes that the proposed method can optimize arbitrary flat plates by embedding the design domain into the background domain. Additionally, the proposed method can be extended to perform stiffener design on complex surfaces by establishing projection relationship between the flat surface and the curved surface. Optimization results indicate that the non-uniform curved grid-stiffened shell design exhibits superior structural performance compared to the uniform grid-stiffened shell design.

Abstract:The integrally stiffened shells possess the advantages of high specific strength, high specific rigidity and excellent sealing performance, which have been widely used in the load-carrying structure of next-generation manned spacecraft and cargo spacecraft. However, the automatic modelling and optimization of the variable-thickness (VT) integrally stiffened shell are challenging due to the diverse stiffener configurations and the VT skin at multiple corners. To address this issue, a novel data-driven modelling and optimization framework is proposed for the VT integrally stiffened shell in this paper. Firstly, a novel mesh deformation method is proposed for modelling the VT integrally stiffened shell combining the radial basis function (RBF) surrogate model and nonuniform rational B-splines (NURBS). By means of the RBF surrogate model, the mapping relationship between the background mesh domain of curved shell and the target mesh domain of flat plate is trained, and then the equal-thickness (ET) stiffened flat plate is transformed into the VT stiffened flat plate by moving coordinates of nodes. In order to realize the accurate description of the VT stiffened flat plate, NURBS method is used to describe the coordinates of nodes. Finally, the VT stiffened flat plate is transformed into the VT integrally stiffened shell by the mapping relationship. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed method, a skin-stiffener verticality detection method is proposed for stiffened curved shells. Moreover, based on the deep neural network (DNN) method, a data-driven stiffener layout optimization method is established to minimize the structural weight of the VT integrally stiffened shell. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, an example of the integrally stiffened shell under internal pressure is carried out. The average value of the detection results of skin-stiffener verticality for the integrally stiffened shell under internal pressure is less than 0.29°, indicating the high accuracy of the proposed modelling method. Compared with the initial result and the optimal result of the equal-thickness integrally stiffened shell, the optimal result of the VT integrally stiffened shell achieves a structural weight reduction of 14.77% and 10.31%, respectively. Optimization results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed optimization framework and the advantage of VT integrally stiffened shells in lightweight design.

Abstract:The grid-stiffened shell is a promising aerospace structure configuration with high load-carrying capacity. However, it is challenging to fully exploit its optimal load-carrying efficiency. In this paper, an isogeometric analysis-based optimization framework in which the size and layout of stiffeners can be optimized simultaneously is provided to maximize the buckling load of the grid-stiffened shell. Firstly, the grid-stiffened cell is established by the beam-shell coupling model. The high-order continuous isogeometric degenerated shell elements and Timoshenko beam elements are used to simulate the skin and the stiffener, respectively. Owing to the high-order continuous property of isogeometric degenerated shell elements, the sensitivity required for the gradient-based optimization solver can be obtained analytically. Then, the equivalent stiffness coefficients of the grid-stiffened cell are obtained by the asymptotic homogenization method, and the buckling analysis efficiency of the equivalent model is improved by the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Typical illustrative examples are carried out to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework, and the effects of initial stiffener layouts and stiffener heights on the optimization results are discussed in detail. The optimization results indicate that the proposed framework can obtain novel grid-stiffened shells, which significantly outperforms traditional orthogonal grid-stiffened shells in terms of load-carrying capacity.

Abstract:A systematic topology optimization based approach is proposed to design the optimal stiffener of three-dimensional shell/plate structures for static and eigenvalue problems. Optimal stiffener design involves the determination of the best location and orientation. In this paper, the stiffener location problem is solved by a microstructure-based design domain method and the orientation problem is modelled as an optimization orientation problem of equivalent orthotropic materials, which is solved by a newly developed energy-based method. Examples are presented to demonstrate the application of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Tanks and silos are often designed as ring-stiffened cylindrical shells. Nowadays, the load-increasing effect of closely spaced ring stiffeners under axial compression has received limited attention in research and practice. Considering the structural safety, the ring-stiffened shell needs to be estimated on the conservative side in practice. This is not desirable in terms of modern lightweight steel structures. However, material efficiency is achieved by combining thin plates with ring-stiffeners. In this paper, small specimen experimental series are carried out to calibrate numerical models, which are subsequently used in parameter studies, because the large-scale experiments are cost-intensive and therefore difficult to carry out in the laboratory. The small cylindrical shells are manufactured by welding of two half-cylindrical shells and the ring stiffeners are spot-welded to the cylindrical shell. Geometric dimension of shell specimens is measured by 3D scanning technology. The measured geometric imperfection information is directly imported into the numerical model based on a mapping relationship and the buckling tests are recalculated by means of geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis with imperfection. The results indicate that the buckling resistance calculated by the Finite Element analysis is very close to that of the test results. The initial geometric imperfection is discussed with reference to the Eurocodes design standard. Furthermore, influence of the ring-stiffener parameter, including imperfection amplitude, radius over thickness ratio, geometry of ring stiffener etc., on the buckling load and knockdown factor is discussed based on a large number of parameter study.

Abstract:Static and dynamic collaborative optimization model of cylindrical shell structure is constructed in this paper for combined static and dynamic properties.There are different objective functions in various subsystem-level optimization models.The objective functions are as follows: minimum structural mass in static model,minimum deformation that is the largest deformation of structure in dynamic model.In system-level optimization model,the objective function is minimum relative deviation between the collaborative objective function and subsystem-level's.At the same time,a bilevel optimization strategy is proposed which uses the Multi-Island Genetic Algorithm.As an example,a cylindrical shell is implemented with the collaborative optimization model and strategy.The obtained optimal design indicates the great potential of decreasing structural mass and dynamic response under the strength and stiffness requirements.The result shows that the model is feasible and suitable for using in actual optimization problems of engineering structures.

Abstract:Dynamic characteristics greatly influence the comprehensive performance of a structure. But they are rarely included as objectives in traditional robust optimization of structures. In this study, a robust optimization model including both means and standard deviations of dynamic characteristic indices in the objective and constraint functions is constructed for improving the structural dynamic characteristics and reducing their fluctuations under uncertainty. Adaptive Kriging models are employed for the efficient computation of dynamic characteristics. An intelligent resampling technology is proposed to save computational costs and accelerate convergence of Kriging models, which takes full advantage of the test points for precision verification, the sample points within the local region of the biggest relative maximum absolute error and the near-optimal point to improve the global and local precision of Krigings. The high efficiency of proposed intelligent resampling technology is demonstrated by a numerical example. Finally, an efficient algorithm integrating adaptive Kriging models, Monte Carlo (MC) method, constrained non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (CNSGA) is proposed to solve the robust optimization model of structural dynamic characteristics. Kriging models are interfaced with MC method to efficiently compute the fitness of individuals during CNSGA. The implementation of proposed methodology is explained in detail and highlighted by the robust optimization of a cone ring fixture with lots of circumferentially distributed holes in a large turbo generator aimed at moving its natural frequencies away from the exciting one. The comparison of the optimized design with the initial one demonstrates that the proposed methodology is feasible and applicable in engineering practice.
A New Bearing Structure of Large Storage Tanks with A Reticulated Shell Dome and its Optimization

Abstract:In order to satisfy the security demand of the connection between the reticulated shell dome and the tank shell,a new simple and stressing definitely bearing structure for large storage tanks with a reticula-ted shell dome is proposed based on existing connecting structure.The ANSYS is chosen for the analysis,the Finite Element model of large storage tanks with a reticulated shell dome is set up and the performance of large storage tanks between new bearing structures and directly welded structures in aspects of strength, stiffness and whole stability is analyzed and compared.Applying optimization toolbox of ANSYS Work-bench,main dimensions of the new bearing structure are optimized and designed.Research results show that compared with directly welded structures,the new bearing structure can reduce the adverse stress in reticu-lated shell dome,improve the stress distribution of the connection by the rotation among components,which indicates that the new bearing structure is suitable for large storage tanks with a reticulated shell dome;the economy and lightweight of the new bearing structure can also be improved by the optimization.
Stable Characteristics Optimization of Anti-Symmetric Cylindrical Shell with Laminated Carbon Fiber Composite

Abstract:This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization model for anti-symmetric cylindrical shell in the bionic gripper structure. Here, the response surface method is used to establish multiple surrogate models of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell, and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is used to optimize the design space of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell; the design points of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell are verified by experimental methods. The optimization goals are that the first steady state transition load (the transition process of the bionic gripper structure from the open state to the closed state) of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell is minimized, and the second steady state transition load (the transition process of the bionic gripper structure from the closed state to the open state) is the largest. At the same time, in order to prevent stable instability caused by stress concentration in the second steady state of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell, the maximum principal plane stress is given as the constraint condition. The validity of the optimization results is verified by finite element and experimental methods. Due to the stable transition load of the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell being significantly larger than that of the orthogonal laminated plate, therefore, the anti-symmetric cylindrical shell has potential application prospects in the application of deformable structures and bionic structures that require composite functions such as having light weight, high strength, and large clamping force. The novelty of this paper lies in the multi-objective optimization of the application of the antisymmetric bistable cylindrical shell in the bionic gripper structure.

PARAMETERIZATION STUDY OF ORTHOGRID STIFFENED CYLINDER SHELLS

Abstract:The grid shape, skin thickness and stiffener size of a stiffened cylinder shell have a dramatical effect on the buckling loads. To achieve the minimum weight in this kind of structural design, a 3-D finite-element model using ABAQUS software is built. Parameterization study is carried out and general conclusions are drawn. The numerical results show that the axial buckling resistance and the buckling failure modes vary as the stiffener size and the skin thickness change. The buckling resistance reaches the maximum at the critical point where the global buckling failure mode transforms to the local buckling failure mode of the stiffened shell. According to this property, an optimal design strategy for orthogrid stiffened cylinder shells is developed. An example of the optimal design of the grid stiffened cylinder shell presented in the paper shows the validity of the present method.

Abstract:This paper presents a unified modeling approach for cylindrical shells with partial constrained layer damping (CLD) treatment under general boundary conditions, followed by topology optimization studies of the CLD layout to realize desired damping performance. Initially, the equations of motion for cylindrical shells are formulated using the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Donnell’s shell theory is used to calculate the elastic strain energy of shells. Artificial springs are applied to represent general boundary conditions. Then, the evolutionary structural optimization method is employed to achieve optimal distribution of CLD. The proposed model is validated by comparing present results with those from literature and finite element simulations. With the validated modeling approach, the vibration characteristics of cylindrical shells with partial CLD treatment are studied. And the effectiveness of proposed topology optimization method is investigated comprehensively regarding different thickness ratios of constraining layer to viscoelastic layer under various boundary conditions.

Abstract:Rotationally periodic stiffened shells have been widely used as load-bearing parts in engineering structures, however, the buckling analysis and optimization of stiffened shells suffer from large computational time owing to the large-scale and complex development tendency of engineering structures. Considering that most of the traditional equivalent buckling analysis methods do not retain the features of stiffeners and cannot capture local buckling, their prediction accuracies in buckling load and mode are not high enough although they can reduce the analysis cost. In this paper, an efficient buckling analysis and optimization method is proposed for rotationally periodic stiffened shells accelerated by Bloch wave method. Firstly, the derivation of Bloch wave boundary conditions for buckling analysis of the substructure is presented, along with the corresponding numerical implementation procedure. Based on the buckling analysis method accelerated by Bloch wave method, the Kriging-based Efficient Global Optimization method is used to improve the optimization efficiency. Then, typical examples are carried out for the buckling analyses of stiffened cylindrical shells with various grid patterns including orthogonal grids, triangle grids, rotated triangle grids, mixed triangle grids and hierarchical orthogonal grids, as well as the integrally stiffened shell with non-straight generatrix. Compared with buckling results from the direct finite element analysis, the proposed method achieves high prediction accuracy in buckling load and remarkable improvement in modelling and analysis efficiency simultaneously. Particularly, the proposed method succeeds in capturing both local buckling mode and global buckling mode. Finally, the optimization design of the integrally stiffened shell with non-straight generatrix is carried out based on the proposed method aiming at maximizing the buckling load. Results indicate that the proposed method can reduce the total optimization time significantly and improve the buckling load by 94.5%, contributing to providing meaningful references for the design large-scale engineering structures.

Abstract:An innovative stiffener layout optimization framework is proposed based on the isogeometric analysis-based stiffness spreading method (IGA-based SSM), where the shape and size of stiffeners can be simultaneously optimized. The IGA-based SSM is employed to obtain the stiffness spreading matrices of the stiffeners that are embedded in the flat plate. The flat plate is modeled by high-order continuous isogeometric degenerated shell elements that can provide a smooth sensitivity field. Since the sensitivity required for the optimization can be obtained analytically, a gradient-based optimization algorithm can be employed. Moreover, the ground structure is used to provide the initial layouts of stiffeners and ensure the connectivity of stiffeners. A local geometry control strategy is also adopted to avoid the intersection of stiffeners in the optimization process. To verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method, typical illustrative examples are discussed in detail, considering the compliance minimization optimization problem. Compared with the continuum topology optimization method, the proposed method can provide a clear stiffener layout with a lower computational cost due to fewer design variables and fewer degrees of freedom of the optimization problem. Besides, the maximum thicknesses of stiffeners can be explicitly controlled, and it can easily solve the optimization problem of various volume fraction constraints. Finally, the proposed method is extended to solve a layout optimization problem of the engine nozzle adjusting plate under pressure loads, which obtains a good stiffener layout under the maximum displacement constraint.

Abstract:In this study, a novel RBF-NSGA-II optimization framework based on the response surface methodology (RSM) and the constrained NSGA-II algorithm is proposed to simultaneously improve the static, nonlinear stability and economic performance of free-form latticed shells. The bending stiffness of joints is innovatively considered one of the design variables for shape-member section coupled optimization. The augmented radius basis functions (RBFs) are adopted to develop the metamodels of both the objectives and constraints. The improved minimum distance selection method (TMDSM) is used to select the optimal solution from the Pareto optimal solution set. Moreover, three alternative solutions are presented as supplements to meet various engineering requirements. The proposed RBF-NSGA-II algorithm is validated to have high accuracy for multi-objective optimization problems with high nonlinearity. Compared with those of the initial structures, the strain energy and steel consumption of the optimal structure decreased by 82.23 % and 17.97 %, respectively, while the buckling load considering both the geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity increased by 1.2 times. The involvement of the joint stiffness is demonstrated to have a great influence on the multi-objective optimization results. It is necessary to consider the joint stiffness as one of the design variables during shape-member section coupled optimization.

Abstract:This paper discusses the use of the random search method for the optimal design of single-layered rib-reinforced cylindrical shells under combined axial compression and internal pressure with account taken of the elastic-plastic material behavior. The optimality criterion is the minimum shell volume. The search area for the optimal solution in the space of the parameters being optimized is limited by the strength and stability conditions of the shell. When assessing stability, the discrete rib arrangement is taken into account. In addition to the strength and stability conditions of the shell, the feasible space is subjected to the imposition of constraints on the geometric dimensions of the structural elements being optimized. The difficulty in formulating a mathematical programming problem is that the critical stresses arising in optimally-compressed rib-reinforced cylindrical shells are a function of not only the skin and reinforcement parameters, but also the number of half-waves in the circumferential and meridional directions that are formed due to buckling. In turn, the number of these half-waves depends on the variable shell parameters. Consequently, the search area becomes non-stationary, and when formulating a mathematical programming problem, it is necessary to provide for the need to minimize the critical stress function with respect to the integer wave formation parameters at each search procedure step. In this regard, a method is proposed for solving the problem of optimally designing rib-reinforced shells, using a random search algorithm whose learning is carried out not only depending on the objective function increment, but also on the increment of critical stresses at each extremum search step. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate a technique for optimizing this kind of shells, in which a special search-system learning algorithm is used, which consists in the fact that two problems of mathematical programming are simultaneously solved: that of minimizing the weight objective function and that of minimizing the critical stresses of shell buckling. The proposed technique is illustrated with a numerical example.

Abstract:Based on topology optimization,method for configuration optimization of reinforcing ribs on horizontal spinning machine tool body was presented in the paper.After determining design space and working load,based on structural topology optimization technology of SIMP method and by taking static structure flexibility under multiple working conditions and the first order natural frequency as optimization objectives,the topology optimization model of the machine body structure was set up;Furthermore,by taking into account of manufacturability,the optimal configuration of the plant-shell welding reinforcing ribs was obtained.By comparing with the original design,both the static and dynamic performances of the optimized one was greatly improved,with a 13.39% reduction in maximum stress,and a 10.78% and 9.28% increase in guides stiffness and first order of the nature frequency respectively.

Abstract:Severe stress concentration occurs around circular vent holes of an industrial turbine sealing disk. This paper investigates the structural design and optimization for the vent holes to effectively reduce the maximum von Mises stress and improve the fatigue life of the turbine sealing disk. An efficient integrated design optimization method is presented based on a novel non-circular vent hole design method in combination with a variable dimension sub-model method, a self-developed modeling and meshing tool, and the Multi-Island Genetic Algorithm. The proposed non-circular vent hole is biaxial symmetric and consists of four smoothly connected arcs. The variable dimension sub-model method is utilized to obtain accurate results in the fields around the vent holes within the computationally acceptable time. The modeling and meshing tool is developed by using the Tcl/Tk Scripts to rebuild the geometry and generate the high-quality hexahedral mesh automatically. The Multi-Island Genetic Algorithm is adopted to solve the studied constrained optimization problem. After optimization, the maximum von Mises stress is reduced from 1305.644 MPa to 963.435 MPa, and the fatigue life is increased from 3091 cycles to 30297 cycles. The results show that the proposed design and optimization methods can significantly improve the performance of the turbine sealing disk along with the remarkable drop in stress concentration.
