Abstract:Since the reform and opening up,China's export has had a rapid growth fueled by export-oriented strategy. In the meanwhile,China's energy consumption has been increasing sharply. China's trade and economic development shows the feature of high export and high energy consumption. In this paper, energy embodied in China trade goods in 2005 is calculated quantitatively based on Input-Output analysis approach. The results show that the net export of embodied energy was 579 million tce (tons of coal equivalent),China had become a net exporter of embodied energy. If we kept on this export pace at 17.19 % annual growth (the average growth rate of the past 30 years),based on the input-output data of 2005,the net export of embodied energy would surpassed our energy production eight times by 2030,which is infeasible. With low per-capita energy,China has to change its export growth pattern and adjust its export goods structure so to have the desired sustainable economic development. The authors put forward some suggestions accordingly.
