Abstract:The term of quasi-saturated soil is not currently used in the literatures. However this type of soils is distributed extensively, such as the soils formulated by air sparging as a remediation technology for treatment of contaminated aquifers. In engineering, quasi-saturated soils are usually considered as saturated soils. Nevertheless the characteristic of quasi-saturated soils is very different from that of saturated soils. The differences are concluded as following: a) air bubbles block the pores so that the hydraulic conductivity decreases very much; b) the experiment model shows that the un-drained shear strength of quasi-saturated soils is higher than saturated soils; c) due to the compressibility of pore mixture fluid, the instant deformation occurs when the quasi-saturated soils are loaded; d) more time is needed to complete the consolidation of quasi-saturated soils when compared with saturated soil; e) the property of wave propagation in quasi-saturated soils differs from saturated soils and so on. In this paper, authors table some key questions about quasi-saturated soils firstly. Then according to the questions, the results or progress of research in quasi-saturated soils are introduced and summarized. Conclusions and recommendations for future research are addressed in the end: the research of quasi-saturated soils develops mainly around the effect of air bubbles.

Abstract:The current state of the research on unsaturated soils was reviewed.Then,the relationship between unsaturated soil behavior and engineering problems was discussed.The relevant engineering problems included air and water flow,wetting/drying-induced ground movement,slope stability,earth pressures and bearing capacity in unsaturated soils.Finally,some ideas were proposed on the further research towards the application of unsaturated soil theories in engineering practice.

Abstract:The basic concept of soil water repellency was introduced, the effects of soil water repellency on field water cycle, soil and water conservation, and groundwater environment was summed up. The reasons of soil water repellency were analyzed. The domestic and international methods used for detecting the degree of soil water repellency and their characteristics were introduced. The research advancement of spatial variability for soil water repellency, soil water movement of water repellent soil during infiltration and evaporation process, and measures for improving infiltration ability of hydrophobic soil were also reviewed and assessed thoroughly. Since there were closed associations between soil water repellency and filed water cycle, microbe activity, runoff and sediment production, and pollution of ground water environment, it was urgent to do related research.

Abstract:A review on current situation of research on soil water resources is presented.Based on the concept of value,a new definition of soil water resources is suggested and the importance of assessing the soil water resources is expounded.The soil water resources are defined as the regional suspended water,which can be directly utilized for producing and living of mankind.The index system for assessment is established.It includes four indexes:the amount of water which can be absorbed by the plants,the maximum utilizable amount of water,the amount of water which can be used for developing national economy and the amount of water for maintaining and recovering the eco-environment.The mthods for calculating these indexes are proposed.
Advances and perspectives on soil water research in China’s Loess Plateau

Abstract:China's Loess Plateau is the largest loess deposit in the world in terms of both depth and area. Water storage in soils of the Plateau has direct impacts on food security, human health and ecosystem function. Despite extensive research on the behavior and function of soil water in the Plateau, there is no state-of-the-art review that presents research achievements, gaps and future perspectives. This paper reviews the advances in soil water research and highlights future research needs and challenges in the Loess Plateau, and thereby provides informed decision on sustainable water management. We report that considerable efforts have been made to investigate: i) soil water movement and hydraulic property estimation in the typical loess regions; ii) spatial and temporal variations in soil water content and storage at multiple scales; iii) dried soil layers induced by excessive water use from unreasonable artificial revegetation; and iv) soil water availability and water carrying capacity of typical vegetation types on the Loess Plateau. These studies have greatly enhanced our understanding about the fundamental characteristics, spatio-temporal patterns and natural and anthropogenic controls of soil water distribution and water cycles in the Loess Plateau, which in turn have important implications for the regulation and management of water resources toward sustainable ecological construction. Based on the identified key issues and future research priorities, recommendations were drawn to address unsolved problems, including: i) processes and mechanisms controlling water transport and interactions within the groundwater–soil–plant–atmosphere continuum; ii) how soil hydrological processes couple nutrient cycles in response to climate change and human activities; and iii) development of quantitative models across spatial scales for modeling changes in thresholds of soil water carrying capacity for vegetation. The incorporation of research findings into policy and practice can improve soil water management that will in turn significantly benefit the promotion of ecosystem services and functions in the Loess Plateau.

Abstract:A better understanding of preferential water flow is important because water-related crises, i.e., water scarcity and security, are strongly associated with water retention rates in different landscapes. This review aims to evaluate significant advances in the main themes of preferential water flow to establish the inconsistent roles of preferential water flow in eco-hydrology and suggest promising areas for future work. Results showed that preferential water flow studies have made significant advances in our understanding of certain parameters functioning at multiple scales but that most studies focus on preferential water flow in the vadose zone, whereas few studies on the soil surface. Preferential water flow can have a positive effect on averting water crises, such as when it affects surface runoff soil erosion, soil formation as ecosystem services, nutrient cycling in root zone, and overall water regulation of the water cycle. Conversely, preferential water flow can have a negative effect on eco-hydrological issues via slope stability, gully erosion, geological disaster, waste treatment, water supply in root zone, and food production. Our review concludes that more information is required on preferential water flow before we can assess its role in mitigating water-related crisis events.

Abstract:Soil environmental quality is an important topic of environmental science and soil environmental science.At first,we review the concept and dispute of soil quality which is closely related to soil environmental quality,give the definition of soil environmental quality,and then emphasize that all these concepts and definitions still are under developing.Soil environmental quality refers to the suitable use of a soil within a definite period and spacial boundary and its adaptability to other environmental factors,especially for living and reproducing of human and other organisms and for economic development.It can reflect the soil environment,a measure of the conditions of an environment related to the specific requirements.Soil environmental quality is related with soil health or clean status and soil pollution levels as well.We also discuss some questions related with the study of soil environmental quality,including further study requiried and the remaining problems,for instance,the formulation of soil environmental quality standard and the relationship between phytoavailability and extractability of soil elements.

Abstract:With the environmental deterioration caused by the advance of climate change, soil salinization is a serious and growing global problem. Currently about 7% of the world’s land surface is threatened by salinization. China is a country whose soils are severely affected by this problem, which, due to its extensive area, and wide distribution poses a serious threat to regional agricultural development. In this review, we summarize the framework for soil salinization research in China over the past 70 years, assess the weaknesses of existing research in both a domestic and international context, highlight the trends and key findings of global research about saline soils over the past 30 years, and propose six major fields and directions for future research on saline soil.

Abstract:Soil and water conservation benefits method and hydrological method are adopted in the previous studies on effect of soil and water conservation on hydrological and water resources. Because of water resources with narrow sense as assessment basis both of them can not systematically bring to light the physical mechanism of effect of soil and water conservation on hydrological cycle, so that the research achievements can not really reveal the effect of soil and water conservation on hydrological and water resources. Distributed hydrological model based on physical mechanism taking narrow and broad sense water resources as assessment basis can overcome their serious shortcomings. The research progress of distributed hydrological model is reviewed. Using the distributed hydrological model based on physical mechanism (WEP-L) , taking the key area of soil erosion control in the Yellow River basin, the area between Hekou and Longmen towns as a case, the effect of soil and water conservation on hydrological and water resources is quantitatively studied. The research results indicated that soil and water conservation enables absolute and relative amount of broad sense water resources increase by 7.26 billion m and 27.1 % respectively, and makes absolute and relative amount of narrow sense water resources to decrease by 0.90 billion m and 14.4% respectively. Soil and water conservation changes the composition of narrow sense water resources, that is amount of surface water resources decreased, amount of unrepeated water resources and water ground water resources increased.

Abstract:Due to climate change, 2/3 of the world’s population will face water shortage problems by 2025, while a 50% increase in food production is required in 2050 to feed nine billion people. In addition, the intensified anthropogenic activities have significantly increased water resource pollution. In this condition, wastewater reuse for crop irrigation to reduce water scarcity is currently becoming global, while it often causes soil pollution and heavy metal accumulation in agricultural areas. This situation has increased public concern over its environmental impact. Thus, an integrated framework was conducted to discuss the status of water availability in China, wastewater treatment and reuse in irrigation systems, and the potential health risks. Avenues for new research toward sustainable agriculture were discussed. We emphasize that wastewater reuse reduces the freshwater deficit and increases food productivity. However, adequate treatment should be applied before use to reduce its adverse impacts on human health risks and environmental pollution. Facilities and policies should support more accessible access to reclaimed water used in industries and urban facilities from secondary municipal wastewater treatment plants. This could be a long-term solution to eradicate water scarcity and inefficient water resources in agricultural systems.

Abstract:Information on soil water status and dynamics is needed for agricultural management, as well as engineering and environmental investigations. Water status and dynamics in the vadose zone are primarily influenced by two fundamental properties: soil water content (SWC) and soil hydraulic properties (SHP). The application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for monitoring and estimating these properties has received wider attention and has significantly advanced in recent years. While SWC estimation using GPR has been well-reviewed over the years, SHP estimation has not received the same attention. Notably, there has been increasing research on SHP estimation using GPR in the last decade. This paper reviews the recent studies and advances in applying GPR to study soil water dynamics and SHP estimation. We compared the progress and advantages of the three techniques (Borehole, Surface, and Off-ground), identified key issues affecting their application, and noted future research opportunities. By synthesizing these studies, this review paper aims to draw attention to evolving methodologies in GPR applications for monitoring soil water dynamics and SHP estimation as good indicators of soil hydraulic resistance and how these opportunities can be harnessed to improve soil water management.

Abstract:Wasteful use and unreasonable management of water resources is one of the fundamental causes of many problems of desertification and environmental degradation in arid areas.From the point of increase WUE,reviewed the factors influencing interception,stem flow and soil evaporation.In arid areas,the percentage of interception loss may be small,but the role in redirecting water and nutrients in the root zone by stem flow is very significant,infiltration rate increase under the shrubs with higher litter and organic matter content,and the influence of scattered tree shade on soil evaporation appears to be common;The crust compacted by raindrop reduces infiltration also increase evaporation,but the role of algal crust is not very clear;Rainfall interception by surface rock fragments may be an important component of the water balance of the stone mulched fields,it also can increase filtration rate and reduce runoff and evaporation losses.However,the factors and their role affect hydrological processes in arid areas is not come to an agreement to some degree,need to have a comprehensive understand on larger scale.

Abstract:Water is one of the most critical issues of concern in China’s ongoing rapid economic development. The resource is scarce and demand is growing as China becomes more industrialized and urbanized. The situation is exacerbated by natural and anthropogenic events such as climate change, pollution, exorbitant patterns of water consumption, and an uneven distribution of water resources, with devastating impacts on ecosystems, international relations, food security and public health. In this paper, an overview of China’s water resources is presented. Studies on distribution, consumption patterns and pollution of water resources are reviewed in order to understand the over-exploited and unexplored dimensions of the Chinese water landscape. The status of water resources is also studied with an intention of providing information on the dynamics of water quality and quantity. The paper concludes with a discussion on China’s commitment to rebalancing its water growth model and the measures taken to achieve that.

Abstract:In recent years,due to the formidable challenges brought about by an increasing shortage of water resources,the rural stormwater storage and utilization have made rapid progress all over the world,especially in the arid and semi-arid areas,where people are mostly dependent on rain-fed agriculture.In order to learn from the advanced techniques and successful management experiences gained in practice at home and abroad,different ways of rainwater harvesting,different ways of rainwater utilization,supplemental management policies as well as social and economic benefits are reviewed in detail.Meanwhile,the research and applications in China on rural stormwater storage and utilization are also introduced briefly.Some suggestions are made on how to help decision-making and in-depth research on rural stormwater management of China in the future.

Abstract:This article reviewed the research of urban water and soil conservation in China during the period 1995-2008.Firstly,the period of research was divided into the problem-oriented re-search stage in the years of 1995-1999 and the goal-oriented research stage in the year of 2000-2008.Each stage had its special research focus and characteristic.And then,based on the re-search framework,this paper summarized the domestic urban water and soil conservation research in four aspects,namely theoretical basic research,urban water and soil loss formation research,urban water and soil loss appraisal and urban water and soil conservation measures research.The progress of relational subjects and theories was also introduced.Finally,some problems were pointed out and function-oriented research was proposed as a main development trend in future.

Abstract:With point source pollution gradually being controlled,the harm of nonpoint source pollution to(economic) and social sustainable development are becoming more and more serious.Because of the close relationship between soil erosion and nonpoint source pollution,it is absolutely necessary and imperative to intensify the research on soil and water conservation controlling nonpoint source pollution. The concept of water(environment) quality effects of soil and water conservation was put forward for the first time;External and(domestic) researched findings related with soil and water conservation and soil erosion on nonpoint source pollution were summed up into three respects: analyses of affecting factors of pollutants movement and mechanism,research and development of models of nonpoint source pollution,research of controlling measures of nonpoint source pollution.Their researching progresses were introduced and reviewed,and their developing tendency was analyzed.
