Abstract:In this paper, we show that the belief and plausibility measures defined on finite level fuzzy subset space are the lower and upper probabilities, respectively, of probability measures compatible with the fuzzy Dempster-Shafer (D-S) belief structure. We first introduce a probability measure which is additive on finite-level fuzzy sets space and show that the belief and plausibility measures determined by the fuzzy D-S belief structure are upper-additive and sub-additive, respectively. And then we discuss an objective function whose solutions correspond to a class of probability measures compatible with the fuzzy D-S belief structure. Lastly, a specific probability measure compatible with the fuzzy D-S belief structure is presented.

Abstract:Entropy is a vital concept to measure uncertainties, in order to measure the uncertainties of fuzzy sets (FSs), intuitionist fuzzy sets (IFSs) and Pythagorean fuzzy sets (PFSs) more fully, in this paper, the axiomatic definition of fuzzy entropy of FSs is modified, the entropy measures of IFSs and PFSs are categorized as fuzzy entropy and hesitancy entropy, and the axiomatic definitions of these two entropy measures are also revised. Further, the axiomatic definitions of two overall entropies are given based on fuzzy entropy and hesitancy entropy, and the expressions of overall entropy of IFSs and PFSs are constructed by special functions. Then, it is shown that three existing overall entropy formulas can be constructed by three particular functions, and their rationality is proved. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method and overall entropy are illustrated by an example and two comparative analyses.

Abstract:The knowledge measure or uncertainty measure for constructing interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets has attracted much attention. However, many uncertainty measures are measured by the entropy of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets, which cannot adequately reflect the knowledge of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets. In this paper, we not only extend the axiomatic definition of the knowledge measure of the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set to a more general level but also establish a new knowledge measure function complying with the distance function combined with the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). Further, we investigate the properties of the proposed knowledge measure based on mathematical analysis and numerical examples. In addition, we create the entropy function by calculating the distance from the interval-valued fuzzy set to the most fuzzy point and prove that it satisfies the axiomatic definition. Finally, the proposed entropy is applied to the multi-attribute group decision-making problem with interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy information. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed entropy measure.

Abstract:Being a pair of dual concepts, the normalized distance and similarity measures are important tools for decision-making and pattern recognition under the intuitionistic fuzzy set framework. In this paper, we first construct some counterexamples to illustrate that two existing similarity measures do not meet the axiomatic definition of intuitionistic fuzzy similarity measures. We then show that (1) these two measures cannot effectively distinguish some intuitionistic fuzzy values (IFVs); (2) except for the endpoints, there exist infinitely many pairs of IFVs, where the maximum distance "1" can be achieved under these two distances, leading to counter-intuitive results. To overcome these drawbacks, we introduce the concept of strict intuitionistic fuzzy distance measure (SIFDisM) and strict intuitionistic fuzzy similarity measure (SIFSimM), and propose an improved intuitionistic fuzzy distance measure based on Jensen-Shannon divergence. Moreover, we prove that (1) it is a SIFDisM; (2) its dual similarity measure is a SIFSimM; (3) its induced entropy is an intuitionistic fuzzy entropy. Comparative analysis and numerical examples demonstrate that our proposed distance measure is superior to the existing ones. In particular, our proposed distance measure can better distinguish and rank intuitionistic fuzzy sets.

Abstract:Covering generalized rough set theory is an important extension of classical rough set theory. To characterize a fuzzy set in a given covering approximation space, a pair of fuzzy sets, called covering rough fuzzy lower and upper approximations, were introduced, but they do not describe well how much uncertainty is induced by the granularity of knowledge. In this paper, we first discuss the relationship between uncertainty and granularity of knowledge. Then we examine several commonly used distance measures, and indicate that some of them exhibit some limitations. Next we propose a roughness measure based on Minkowski distance, and examine some important properties of this measure. Finally, an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the application of the roughness measure to incomplete information systems with fuzzy decision.

Abstract:As a new extended form of intuitionistic fuzzy sets, Fermatean fuzzy sets are powerful tools for describing vagueness and uncertainty in complex problems. In the method of handling Fermatean fuzzy information, the distance measure is an essential tool to depict the difference between two Fermatean fuzzy sets. However, how to accurately measure the distance between two Fermatean fuzzy sets is still a problem to be solved. In this paper, we devise two novel distance measure methods for Fermatean fuzzy sets. One is the distance measure of Fermatean fuzzy sets based on the Hellinger distance, which is called the FFSH distance. The other is the distance measure of Fermatean fuzzy sets based on the triangular divergence, which is called the FFSTD distance. Then, we prove that the proposed distance measure methods satisfy the axiomatic requirements of the distance function. Afterward, numerical examples are given to reveal that the proposed distance measures are more effective and reasonable than the normalized Euclidean distance measure, which can overcome the counter‐intuitive situation. Besides, we utilize the proposed distance measure methods to address the problems of pattern recognition and medical diagnosis under Fermatean fuzzy environment and achieved excellent results. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed distance measure methods can efficiently handle the practical application under Fermatean fuzzy environment, and are more reliable than the normalized Euclidean distance measure.

Properties of several metric spaces of fuzzy sets

Abstract:This paper discusses the properties the spaces of fuzzy sets in a metric space equipped with the endograph metric and the sendograph metric, respectively. We first give some relations among the endograph metric, the sendograph metric and the $\Gamma$-convergence, and then investigate the level characterizations of the endograph metric and the $\Gamma$-convergence. By using the above results, we give some relations among the endograph metric, the sendograph metric, the supremum metric and the $d_p^*$ metric, $p\geq 1$. On the basis of the above results, we present the characterizations of total boundedness, relative compactness and compactness in the space of fuzzy sets whose $\alpha$-cuts are compact when $\alpha>0$ equipped with the endograph metric, and in the space of compact support fuzzy sets equipped with the sendograph metric, respectively. Furthermore, we give completions of these metric spaces, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, by applying the Lebesgue's measure on the symmetric difference of sets, we introduce the notions of the symmetric difference metric d△ and p-mean symmetric difference metric d△p in order to measure the difference between fuzzy numbers. The concept of the platform type of fuzzy number (p-fuzzy number) is introduced, and we show that d△ and d△p are zero if and only if two fuzzy numbers are equal or have the same p-fuzzy numbers. Further, the relations between d△ and the uniform Hausdorff metric DH (cf. Diamond and Kloeden, 1989), d△p and Dp (cf. Nola and Ventre, 1987) are discussed. For the non-p-fuzzy numbers, the equivalences of the metric convergences on d△ and DH, d△p and Dp are provided.

Abstract:The measure of distance between two fuzzy sets is a fundamental tool within fuzzy set theory, however, distance measures currently within the literature use a crisp value to represent the distance between fuzzy sets. A real valued distance measure is developed into a fuzzy distance measure which better reflects the uncertainty inherent in fuzzy sets and a fuzzy directional distance measure is presented, which accounts for the direction of change between fuzzy sets. A multiplicative version is explored as a full maximal assignment is computationally intractable so an intermediate solution is offered.

Abstract:We prove that for a given stationary fuzzy ultrametric space (in the sense of Kramosil & Michalek) it can induce a σ- ∨ -superdecomposable measure, by constructing a Hausdorff fuzzy pseudo-metric on its power set. We also prove that the restriction of the σ- ∨ -superdecomposable measure to the σ-algebra of all measurable sets is a σ- ∨ -decomposable measure. Finally we conclude this paper with two open problems.

Abstract:In this paper we discussed novel cross-entropy and entropy models on intuitionism and fuzziness of intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs). In order to measure the discrimination uncertain information, cross-entropy and symmetric cross-entropy are defined based on intuitionistic factor and fuzzy factor. In particular, the constructive principle of entropy is refined; relationship between cross-entropy and entropy is investigated, so we establish a novel intuitionistic fuzzy entropy formula that simultaneously takes into account intuitionistic entropy and fuzzy entropy. We also propose concepts of marginal rate of substitution (MRS) and elasticity of substitution (ES) to describe substitution effect between intuitionism and fuzziness. Moreover, we extend the cross-entropy and entropy models to general version, which could be adjusted by different parameters, and comparative analysis with other existed cross-entropy and entropy measures are presented. Finally, we give applications of pattern recognition and decision making to demonstrate the efficiency of the cross-entropy and entropy models.

Abstract:This paper provides two types of entropy rules for vague sets with corresponding entropy measures. These measures are compared with previously presented measures with examples. The performance of proposed measures are evaluated analytically. Through analysis and examples it is shown that the proposed approaches work well in determining the fuzziness of vague sets.

Abstract:Abstract Similarity measures are very effective and meaningful tool used for evaluating the closeness between any two attributes which are very important and valuable to manage awkward and complex information in real-life problems. Therefore, for better handing of fuzzy information in real life, Ullah et al. (Complex Intell Syst 6(1): 15–27, 2020) recently introduced the concept of complex Pythagorean fuzzy set (CPyFS) and also described valuable and dominant measures, called various types of distance measures (DisMs) based on CPyFSs. The theory of CPyFS is the essential modification of Pythagorean fuzzy set to handle awkward and complicated in real-life problems. Keeping the advantages of the CPyFS, in this paper, we first construct an example to illustrate that a DisM proposed by Ullah et al. does not satisfy the axiomatic definition of complex Pythagorean fuzzy DisM. Then, combining the 3D Hamming distance with the Hausdorff distance, we propose a new DisM for CPyFSs, which is proved to satisfy the axiomatic definition of complex Pythagorean fuzzy DisM. Moreover, similarly to some DisMs for intuitionistic fuzzy sets, we present some other new complex Pythagorean fuzzy DisMs. Finally, we apply our proposed DisMs to a building material recognition problem and a medical diagnosis problem to illustrate the effectiveness of our DisMs. Finally, we aim to compare the proposed work with some existing measures is to enhance the worth of the derived measures.

Abstract:Picture fuzzy sets (PFSs), as a generalization of traditional fuzzy sets and intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs), offer a powerful framework for modeling and dealing with imprecise and uncertain information and have been widely used in various fields. Nevertheless, how to effectively measure the differences or similarities between PFSs is still a challenging and urgent problem. Despite that some distance measures for PFSs have been developed, some of them have counterintuitive and unreasonable results and even partially fail to satisfy the axiomatic definition of distance measures. To handle these limitations, in this paper, we propose two distance measures of PFSs motivated by the merits of Jensen–Shannon divergence. Specifically, the first distance measure of the PFSs considers the positive degree, neutral degree and negative degree. The second distance measure introduces the refusal degree on this basis. Moreover, the proposed distance measures not only satisfy the axiomatic definition but also overcome the counterintuitive results of existing distance measures. Finally, two kinds of applications related to pattern recognition and medical diagnosis are used to verify the performance of the proposed distance measures.

Abstract:Given a measurable space (X,F), a fuzzy measure μ on (X,F), and a nonnegative functionfonXthat is measurable with respect toF, we can define a new set function ν on (X,F) by the fuzzy integral. It is known that ν is a lower semicontinuous fuzzy measure on (X,F) and, moreover, if μ is finite, then ν is a finite fuzzy measure as well. In this paper, we generalize in several different ways the concept of absolute continuity of set functions, as defined in classical measure theory. In addition, we investigate the relationship among these generalizations by using the structural characteristics of set functions such as null-additivity and autocontinuity, and determine which types of absolute continuity of fuzzy measures are possessed by the fuzzy measure (or the lower semicontinuous fuzzy measure) obtained by the fuzzy integral.
Type-2 fuzzy cross-entropy and entropy measures and their applications

Abstract:Type-2 fuzzy sets (T2FSs) have received increasing attention due to its great ability to handle imprecise and ambiguous information in reality. The purpose of this paper is to develop a general framework of type-2 fuzzy cross-entropy and entropy measures, which provides a fresh new look into the uncertainty of T2FSs. We first point out that uncertainty of a T2FS is consist of fuzziness and hesitancy, which could be described by the fuzzy factor and hesitant factor, respectively. A novel type-2 fuzzy cross-entropy has been initiated based on these two factors to measure the discrimination of uncertain information between two T2FSs. Meanwhile, we refine the axiomatic principles of type-2 fuzzy entropy and study the inherent relationship between type-2 cross-entropy and entropy. Moreover, some parameterized type-2 fuzzy cross-entropy and entropy measures are also investigated, and decomposition formula suggests that type-2 fuzzy entropy could be expressed as the weighted average of the fuzzy entropy and hesitant entropy. Finally, we apply the proposed uncertainty measures to the clustering pattern of T2FSs and develop a new multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) approach.
