Abstract:Purpose Older adults aged & GE; 80 years living alone at home are more likely to experience challenges. Daily life experiences regarding living alone are still limited in the Asian context. This study explored the everyday life experiences of older Chinese residents living alone at home. Research questions included: (1) How do Chinese community-dwelling old people describe everyday life experiences related to living alone? (2) What kind of difficulties and needs do Chinese community-dwelling older people living alone face in everyday lives? (3) How do Chinese community-dwelling older people cope with challenges faced in their everyday lives related to living alone?Methods This was qualitative descriptive research. Purposive sampling was adopted to recruit 13 participants aged 80-92 years of age from communities and one hospital. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data which was analysed by conventional content analysis.Results Three themes were identified: theme 1-difficulty in finding a sense of belonging, theme 2-striving to maintain independence, theme 3-hard to gain a sense of control.Conclusions This study provided novel insights into understanding the difficulties and needs of Chinese older people living alone at home. Three key challenges and associated strategies they used to cope with in daily lives were presented.

Abstract:Objective:To understand the demand for long-term care among elderly people in Changning District in Shanghai.Methods:Activities of daily living(ADL) scale and questionnaire of demand for long-term care were conducted among all elderly people of 60 years old and above from three neighborhood committees. A total of 1 665 effective questionnaire were gotten.Results:Among all the interviewees,27.57% of elderly people demanded help for daily life,15.56% called for mental nursing,25.47% hoped they could get nursing for chronic diseases,23.00% demanded rehabilitation nursing,18.50% wanted nursing for long-term care,and 19.40% chose other medical nursing care. Among elderly people who needed long-term care,20%-55% did not receive long-term care since they could not afford it. With increase of age and decrease of self-care ability,the elderly demand more long-term care(OR>1). Elderly people with chronic diseases had more demand for long-term care. Compared with elderly people who lived with their sons or daughters,the elderly people who lived alone called for more in mental nursing,chronic diseases nursing and rehabilitation nursing(OR<1). Elderly people with low level of education,low monthly income from endowment insurance and low monthly household expenditure had more demand in long-term care.Conclusion:The government should improve the security of long-term care for elderly people who are oldest-old,living alone and having low income. Meanwhile,the government is suggested to establish perfect long-term care system.

Abstract:An aging population results in an increased demand for services designed to meet the needs of elderly people. To enable elderly individuals to age successfully in their original residence environments, property management companies that provide services to apartment complex residents play an important role as service providers. The purpose of this study was to identify possible services that property management companies can provide to elderly residents of apartment complexes in response to changing demographics. Factor analysis was performed to identify the main areas of service demands or service demand aspects. Cluster analysis and a chi-square test were also used to identify and highlight the varied demographic characteristics and residence conditions of respondents and how they affect the level of importance attributed to each service demand aspect. Results showed seven main service aspects that were of concern to elderly individuals. Specific characteristics of elderly people that led to higher demands for certain other service aspects were also identified. The results of this study can serve as a reference for property management companies to help them provide custom design services for apartment complexes they serve and to expand their business scope and opportunities.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the current situation of the demand for geriatric care services of community residents in Beijing and analyse the factors affecting it, so as to provide a reference basis for meeting the demand for diversified and professional geriatric care services. Methods: A random sampling method was used, employing a self-made questionnaire to randomly survey 1558 elderly individuals at community health service centers in eight urban districts where elderly care centers are planned to be built, analyzing the influencing factors of different characteristics of the elderly care service needs from three aspects using a dichotomous logistic regression model: predisposing, enabling, and need factors.Results: 69.7% of the elderly had the need for home care services, 22.8% wanted to get care services at elderly care centres, 15.9% wanted to get care services at nursing homes, 12.3% had the need for community care services, and 7.4% didn't know where to get care services; 68.5% had the need for care services for the elderly with disabilities/semi-disabilities, 58.0% for care services for the elderly with dementia, 58.0% for care services for the elderly with common diseases, and 58.0% for care services for the elderly with dementia. 58.0 per cent, 54.7 per cent for care for the elderly with common or frequent illnesses, 34.9 per cent for rehabilitation training, 33.0 per cent for plumbing care, and 7.5 per cent for hospice/hospice care. At the same time, there were urban-rural differences in the demand for elderly care services, with suburban elderly having a higher demand for care services than urban ones (P < 0.05). Elderly people's demand for care services was mainly related to age, place of residence, and gender in the causative factors, mode of residence and physical condition in the able factors, and mode of care services and care needs in the need factors(P <0.05). Conclusion: The demand for elderly care services is differentiated by the factors of residence, age and gender; accurately matching the demand for elderly care services, innovating the mode of elderly care services and improving the quality are important strategies to improve the elderly health service system.

Abstract:With the progress of society and the economy, the Chinese population inevitably has an aging tendency. In this situation, the issue of aged providing becomes a focus that attracts all attention of the society, and elderly apartments have gradually become one of the most important forms of housing endowment. As a crucial part of the elderly apartment, public spaces are used for the elderlys activity and association, and it should consider the elderlys demands while designing. Depending on the differences in the elders somatic function, the elder could be classified into three types: self-care, device-helping, and nursing-cared. Furthermore, their demands for public spaces in the elderly apartment are different according to the different characteristics of the Three Types. This paper will analyze cases of elderly apartments at home and abroad and summarize their design methods of public spaces, then combine with the present situation in our country, put forward the design strategy of public spaces in elderly apartments of the Three Types, according to the characteristics of the elder, and provide a reference for the optimization of the public spaces in the elderly apartment.

Abstract:Along with the aging in China,the demand of the elders for long-term care is increasing.Based on the survey data which were collected in Beijing urban and rural in 2006 for elders,the paper describes the disability level and health condition of the elders,analyzes the influencing factors of disability,and measures the demand of long-term care for the elders.The research found that the disability level of the elders increased as the education level decreased and age increased.At the end of this paper,it is pointed out that the family can not maintain the long-term care function at present.This situation in rural areas is more serious than urban areas.Better Long-term Care resources provided by the society are limited which evokes an urgent development of long-term care facilities for elders.

Abstract:Abstract Background Community-based care services refers to the professional services provided at home to the elderly with formally assessed demands. The growth of the elderly population has increased the demand for these services, and this issue is even worse in the affordable housing community (AHC) of China. Understanding of elderly’s demands for different types of community-based care services and its determinations would enable the implementation of appropriate incentive schemes to promote utilization of community-based care services in the AHCs of China. Methods Guided by previous studies, a conceptual framework was developed. Then, a questionnaire was designed and a community based survey was conducted from May 10–20, 2018 in Daishan AHC of Nanjing City, China. Four hundred eight participants from 25,650 elderly people were selected by systematic random sampling technique. Binary logistic regression was applied to the data about the elderly’ primary demands for community-based care services in the AHC, to quantify the elderly’s demands and explore related individual-level factors. Results The finding indicates that more than 50% of respondents had the demand for an elderly care hotline, building health archives, on-call nursing and doctor visits, medical lectures, regular medical examinations and sporting fitness. The binary logistic regression models revealed that the primary demands of the elderly for community-based care services were influenced by distinct factors. Conclusions Our findings help clarify different types of community-based care services and provide fresh information about the demand for community-based care among the elderly in AHCs. Several policy implications are discussed to enhance the efficiency of community-based care service provision.

Abstract:In article describes the choice of methods for caring for the elderly and the comfort of living spaces are closely linked to aging-friendly design. Aging leads to a decline in physical functions, resulting in numerous obstacles in life. Therefore, the article analyzes the activity of housing for the elderly, taking aging-friendly design as a starting point. The development status of elderly housing needs in management, safety, social interaction, respect, and other aspects are examined. Design strategies conducive to aging, in terms of lighting, ventilation, detailed environment, public spaces, and intellectual services, are proposed. This aims to enhance comfort, safety, and livability in housing for the elderly and ensure the quality of life for older people. With the rapid growth in demand for elderly care, the vacancy rate in elderly housing reaches 50%. Due to changes in social and family structure, most elderly people live alone and lack security. Elderly homes have become ideal places for them. Currently, most care facilities lack professional management, and the services provided are too uniform. This leads to a weak sense of identity, with resources remaining underutilized. For semi-disabled individuals, standardized conditions do not always meet their expectations for rehabilitation care, medical services, and spiritual comfort. Elderly people face behavioral disorders affecting sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Declines in the five senses, including speech impairments, mobility difficulties, and physiological disorders, lead to psychological needs such as socialization and self-realization. Aging-friendly design is based on the physiological and psychological cognitive characteristics of elderly people. It aims to create an environment that meets their needs and ensures effective care for them. The aim of the study is to analyze the problems associated with designing buildings for the elderly and to determine strategies for creating a supportive design that considers the needs and characteristics of the target audience. The work is aimed at improving the comfort, safety, and quality of life of elderly people by providing them with an appropriate living environment.
The Expected Demand for Elderly Care Services and Anticipated Living Arrangements Among the Oldest Old in China Based on the Andersen Model

The second aim was to investigate preferred choices of living arrangements among the oldest old and the influencing factors. Methods: Data of 4,738 participants aged ≥80 years were extracted from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey carried out in 2014. Using the Andersen model as the analysis framework, a multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the relationship between the expected elderly care services and living arrangements and other influencing factors. The odds ratios were calculated to indicate the relationship between the influencing factors and the dependent variables. Results: From the descriptive analysis results, we found that the oldest old showed high anticipated needs for home visits (83.5%) and health education (76.4%). Further, there existed a huge imbalance between the supply and demand of care services for the aged. Living with children is still the most important way of providing for the oldest old. The regression results showed that the expected demands for elderly care services and anticipated living arrangements among the oldest old in China are influenced by age, residence, housing property rights, economic status, loneliness, and activities of daily living (ADLs). The oldest old who are older without housing property rights, childless, and have restricted ADLs were more frequently observed to live in long-term care institutions. Conclusions: There is an inequality of the supply and expected demand for elderly care services, and living with children is still a preferred choice of the Chinese oldest old. Our findings indicate that when planning how to promote elderly care services among the oldest old, it is important to consider their expectations, especially for the subgroup that is relatively disadvantaged. Related policies should be developed to offer incentives to family caregivers when they live with the oldest old.

Abstract:Introduction With China's urbanization and demographic shifts significantly affecting elder care, this study examines the alignment of community‐based elder care services in Hangzhou's Hemu Community. It addresses the gap in understanding how these services meet the needs of an aging population in a rapidly changing social context. Methods A comprehensive mixed‐methods approach was utilized, involving interviews with community residents, observations of elder care service operations and thorough document analysis. The objective was to evaluate the adequacy, utilization and satisfaction levels concerning these elder care services. Results The research identified that, although the services generally meet the community's needs, there are notable challenges in content specificity, quality assurance and promotional efforts. These challenges lead to resistance among older adults. Additionally, issues with service visibility and the lack of robust feedback mechanisms were noted. Conclusion This study highlights the critical need for a cooperative strategy involving government, community organizations, social entities and businesses in enhancing elder care services. It suggests that improvements in service visibility, content quality and targeted promotion are crucial to address the evolving needs of the aging population and to reduce reluctance in service utilization.

Abstract:Background: Empty-nest elders have considerable needs for daily living, health care, and social support in China. The growing need for care of an aging population requires to be met through adequate policy decision making by government.Aim: To explore care needs of Chinese empty-nest elderly people and to provide reference information for relevant authorities in making care-supporting policies.Method: A descriptive qualitative study design was adopted. Twenty-five senior citizens in urban communities who were not living with their children were recruited from three communities in different districts of Beijing. In-depth interviews with a semi-structured questionnaire were used to collect data. A qualitative content analysis method was used to analyze data.Results: A major care need by the empty-nest elderly was home-based care. In view of their physical condition, need of support and their own security problems, they would like to have aging-in-place, home-based care by housemaid employment, or have institutionalized care in the future. However, they had some concerns about institutionalized care.Conclusions: A combination of home-based and community-based care is a suitable mode of care for the empty-nest elderly, and institutionalized care is an expected supplementary form of care. However, few studies have focused on the oldest-old with regards to their existing demand for elderly care services and anticipated living arrangements. Methods: The data of 4738 participants aged ≥80 years were extracted from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS) carried out in 2014. Using the Andersen model as the analysis framework, a multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between anticipated use of social services and intended residence and influencing factors. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to indicate the relationship between the influencing factors and the dependent variables. Results: From the descriptive analysis results, it is found that oldest-old showed high anticipated needs for care services, such as home visits (83.5%), health education (76.4%). And there exists a huge imbalance between supply and demand for aged care services. Moreover, living with children is still the most important way of providing for the oldest-old (44.4% in urban, 55.6% in rural). The multivariate regression results showed that the demand for elderly care services and anticipated living arrangements among the oldest-old in China are influenced by predisposing factors, enabling factors, and need factors (P 1, P<0.05). Conclusions: The most vital needs of the oldest-old are home visits, health education, and spiritual comfort. There is a huge imbalance between supply and demand. Moreover, living with children is still the most important way of providing for the oldest-old. Demand for elderly care services and anticipated living arrangements are influenced by predisposing, enabling and need factors. Although the family plays an essential role in the healthcare of the oldest-old, the traditional pension model no longer meets the multi-level and diversified healthcare service needs of the oldest-old due to the rapidly aging Chinese population, which requires countermeasures from policy makers.

Abstract:Along with the increase of aging population and empty-nest families in China,a series of social issues with the aging population have become the focus of academic studies.The Researches at macro-level,such as aging process and ways of caring for the aged,provide policy guidance for the government.On the other hand,if we want to estimate the effects of the government's policies,especially for aged people's daily lives,we should analyze the interactions between the elderly individuals and the environment at micro-level,namely,the research on spatial behaviors of the elderly.Moreover,the research helps provide guidance for urban planning which could improve aged people's life quality and promote social justice in space resources by controlling structural evolution of urban spaces based on the demands of the elderly's lives and their living conditions.In this paper we discuss the current multi-disciplinary researches on the elderly's daily lives in China.Based on the awareness of the elderly's lifestyles and Maslow's hierarchy of needs,we conclude that health seeking,shopping,and leisure behavior are the main activities of senior citizens' daily lives in China.Therefore,this paper focuses on these three types of behaviors,reviews the progress of correlational studies by combing through the domestic literature on the subject,then summarizes the behavioral characteristics of the elderly and the influencing factors,especially the interactive mechanism between urban space and residents' behavior during the transition time in China.We synthetically assess the advantage,disadvantage and inadequacy of the studies we have covered,based on the analyses of the current status and the trend of the elderly's behaviors at home.By comparing to the research status of international geographical gerontology which is composed of multiple academic disciplines,we predict the trend of further studies in the macro background of social-cultural and spatial environment changes,and expect that the high-level needs of self-fulfillment of the elderly could be met in a favorable environment with supporting service facilities and community services.

Abstract:China entered an aging society in 1999, and so far, Beijing has entered the moderately aging society. Under the circumstances, home care has become the primary choice for the elderly in Beijing. Based on the relevant literature, this paper studies the existing policies and practical difficulties of home-based elderly care service in Beijing. The paper recognizes good effects of the current policies and further analyzes the problems to be improved from the aspects of policy follow-up of market segmentation, policy coordination, and policy dynamic adjustment. Based on the research, the paper suggests that the government should coordinate the development of industries and institutions by doing a good job in the market segmentation. The government need to improve the matched policies to reflect the comprehensive effect of the policy system. All sectors of society need to advocate a new view of supporting the elderly to create a good policy environment.
