Abstract:Objective To evaluate the efficacy of sacral neuromodulation for the treatment of patients with interstitial cystitis with pelvic floor pain. Methods From November 2004 to December 2005 , 4 patients were diagnosed to have interstitial cystitis with pelvic floor pain according to National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) criteria and received permanent implantation of InterS-tim for sacral neuromodulation. Results Four patients with interstitial cystitis who received permanent implantation of InterStim for sacral neuromodulation had no complications. The follow-up was 3 to 8 months. The mean 24 - h voiding volume increased from pretreatment (96.3±9.3) ml (90-110 ml) to posttreat-ment (201.0±9.2) ml (192-212 ml) (P<0.05). The mean 24 - h voiding frequency decreased from (20. 3±4. 1) times (15-25 times) to (9. 8±2. 2) times (7-12 times) ( P <0.05). The mean nocturnal voiding frequency decreased from (9. 8±1. 5) times (8-11 times) to (4. 3±1.3) times (3-6 times) (P<0.05). The mean voiding pain scores decreased from 8. 8±1. 5 (7 - 10) to 1. 8±1.5(1-4) ( P< 0. 01 ). The mean O'Leary-Sant interstitial cystitis indices decreased from 36 (full scores) to 9. 3±1.5 (8 - 11 ) (P <0. 01 ). Conclusions Sacral neuromodulation using lnterStim therapy is effective and safe for the treatment of interstitial cystitis with pelvic floor pain.
