Abstract:Purpose Adsorption and desorption are important processes that influence the transport, transformation, and bioavailability of atrazine in soils. Equilibrium batch experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption–desorption characteristics of atrazine. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine and quantify the main soil parameters governing atrazine adsorption and desorption phenomena; (2) find the correlativity between the identified soil parameters; and (3) investigate the universal desorption hysteresis traits. Materials and methods Fifteen soils with contrasting physico-chemical characteristics were collected from 11 provinces in eastern China. The equilibrium time was 24 h both for adsorption and desorption experiments. Atrazine was detected by Waters 2695/UV HPLC. Results and discussion Adsorption isotherms of atrazine could be well described by the Freundlich equation ( r ≥ 0.994, p < 0.01). The total organic carbon (TOC) was the first independent variable that described 53.0 % of the total variability of K f , followed by the pH (9.9 %), and the clay (4.0 %) and silt (1.2 %) contents, separately; while the primary soil properties that affect desorption parameters included the TOC, pH, free Fe 2 O 3 (Fe d ) and the sand content, with the biggest contribution achieved by the TOC (ranged from 48.5–78.1 %). The results showed that when the content ratio of clay to TOC (RCO) was less than 40, the atrazine adsorption was largely influenced by the organic matrix, while when the RCO was greater than 40, they were vital affected by the clay content. Conclusions Adsorption–desorption isotherms of atrazine in soils were nonlinear. The content of TOC, clay, and iron oxides, as well as the pH value were the key soil parameters affecting the adsorption–desorption of atrazine in soil, among which the RCO especially exhibited relevance. Additionally, the desorption hysteresis existed for atrazine retention in all 15 tested soils, and the hysteretic effect enhanced with the increasing time for desorption. This would be ascribed to the heterogeneity physical–chemical properties of these soils.

Abstract:Residual injury of atrazine to the succeeding crops has been frequently reported. It is necessary to find a solution for the detoxification of atrazine contaminated soil. A high-efficient bacterial strain Arthrobacter sp. C2 for atrazine degradation was isolated in this study. The genomic information of the isolate C2, and its degradation characteristics and potential application in detoxification of atrazine contaminated soil were investigated. The results indicated that the isolate C2 genome contained 4,305,216 bp nucleotides, three plasmids, and 4705 coding genes. The degradation rates of atrazine at levels of 1, 10, 100 mg/L by the isolate C2 were 0.34, 1.94, 18.64 mg/L/d, respectively. The optimum temperature and pH for the isolate C2 to degrade atrazine were 30 degrees C and 7.0-9.0. Based on the metabolites detected by UPLC-TOF-MS/MS and genome annotation of the isolate C2, a common metabolic pathway of atrazine was proposed as that atrazine is firstly dechlorinated into hydroxyatrazine, and subsequently to N-isopropylammelide via dealkylation, and ultimately deaminated to cyanuric acid. Introduction of the isolate C2 into soil can enhance degradation of atrazine and thus eliminate the toxic effect of this herbicide on wheat growth. Our results indicate that the strain C2 could be a potential bioresource for bioremediation of atrazine contaminated soil. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Atrazine, a herbicide used widely, could not be effectively removed from waters by chemical or biological processes. In this work, the performances and mechanisms for atrazine degradation were examined by persulfate (PS) activation with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and graphene (GR) composites at various conditions including dosages of nZVI/GR and PS, pH value, temperature and natural organic matters (NOM). Results showed that mass ratio of 5:1 for nZVI to GR exhibited the highest efficiency for catalytic degradation of atrazine when 92.1% of atrazine was removed within 21 min. The degradation efficiencies of atrazine increased when PS concentration increased from O-2 to 1.0 mM, and were favored in acidic pH and high temperature, while was not affected by NOM with a concentration less than 4 mg/L. Electron spin resonance and radical quenching studies showed that both center dot OH and SO4 center dot- were mainly produced on the surface of nZVI/GR, while SO4 center dot- was the predominant radicals responsible for the degradation of atrazine. Mechanisms for atrazine degradation were also proposed on the basis of XRD and XPS analysis. And its degradation pathways involved in dealkylation, alkylic hydroxylation, dechlorination-hydroxylation, and alkylic oxidation using LC/MS/MS techniques. These results could provide a better understanding of the application of nZVI/GR-PS system for atrazine removal from waters.

Abstract:Atrazine residue in soil is one of the serious environmental problems and continues to risk ecosystem and human health. To address the environmental behaviors and dissipation of atrazine and better manage the application of atrazine in reality, we comprehensively investigated the adsorption and desorption, migration ability, and vanishing of atrazine in three distinct soils in China including Jiangxi (JX, pH 5.45, TOC 0.54%), Nanjing (NJ, pH 6.15, TOC 2.13%), and Yancheng (YC, pH 8.60, TOC 0.58%) soils. The atrazine adsorptive capacity to the soils was arranged in the order of NJ > YC > JX. The leaching assay with profiles of the soils showed strong migration, suggesting it had a high bioavailability to weeds and potential for underground water contamination. We further investigated the effects of environmental factors such as soil moisture, microbial activity and photolysis on atrazine degradation and showed that the degradation of atrazine in the soil mainly underwent the abiotic process, most likely through hydrolysis and photolysis-mediated mechanisms, and to less extend through soil microbial catabolism. Using HRLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS and by comparing the measured and theoretical m/z values and fragmentation data, ten metabolites comprising eight degraded products and two conjugates were characterized. Atrazine existing in the soils and sprayed coordinately blocked the growth of three common weeds, which prompted us to use the minimal atrazine in practice to control the waste of the pesticide and its impact on the environment. Overall, our work provided an insight into the mechanisms for the degradation of atrazine residues in the soils and contributed to the environmental risk assessment of the pesticide and management in its application control in the crop rotation and safe production.

Abstract:Atrazine is a kind of triazine herbicide that is widely used for weed control due to its good weeding effect and low price. The study of atrazine removal from the environment is of great significance due to the stable structure, difficult degradation, long residence time in environment, and toxicity on the organism and human beings. Therefore, a number of processing technologies are developed and widely employed for atrazine degradation, such as adsorption, photochemical catalysis, biodegradation, etc. In this article, with our previous research work, the progresses of researches about the treatment technology of atrazine are systematically reviewed, which includes the four main aspects of physicochemical, chemical, biological, and material-microbial-integrated aspects. The advantages and disadvantages of various methods are summarized and the degradation mechanisms are also evaluated. Specially, recent advanced technologies, both plant-microbial remediation and the material-microbial-integrated method, have been highlighted on atrazine degradation. Among them, the plant-microbial remediation is based on the combined system of soil-plant-microbes, and the material-microbial-integrated method is based on the synergistic effect of materials and microorganisms. Additionally, future research needs to focus on the excellent removal effect and low environmental impact of functional materials, and the coordination processing of two or more technologies for atrazine removal is also highlighted.

Abstract:Atrazine is one of the most used herbicides in China. It is a persistent organic pollutant but has been widely used on Chinese farmlands for a long time. To assess its dietary and ecological risks to human and environment, in this study, atrazine residues were extracted with acetonitrile and then plant samples were detected with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and soil samples were determined with gas chromatography coupled with nitrogen-phosphorus detector (GC-NPD). The limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method was 0.01 mg/kg for all matrices. The recoveries ranged from 82.0 to 105.4% for plant samples and 75.6 to 85.6% for soil samples. The final residues of atrazine in all plant samples were lower than LOQ. Dietary risk assessment suggested that under good agricultural practices (GAP) conditions, intake of atrazine from apples, grapes, and tea would exhibit an acceptably low health risk on consumers. However, the final residues of atrazine in soil samples were <0.01–9.2 mg/kg, and the half-lives were 2.0–9.1 days. Based on the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) model, the potential affected fraction (PAF) of atrazine in soil samples ranges from 0.01 to 65.8%. Atrazine residues in 43.1% soil samples were higher than 0.11 mg/kg, which was the hazardous concentration for 5% of species (HC5) of atrazine in soil. These results suggested that the ecological risks of atrazine in apples, grapes, and tea garden soil would exhibit a high risk on environmental species even under the same GAP conditions. This study could provide guidance for comprehensive risk assessment of atrazine properly used in apple, grape, and tea gardens.

Abstract:The accumulation of atrazine in sediments raises wide concern due to its potential negative effects on aquatic environments. Here we collected sediments and different submerged macrophytes to simulate natural shallow lakes and to measure atrazine levels and submerged macrophyte biomass. We determined gene expressions in submerged macrophytes treated with or without atrazine. We also examined atrazine concentrations and its metabolite structures in submerged macrophytes. When the initial concentration of atrazine in sediments ranged from 0.1 to 2.0 mg kg−1 dry weight (DW), atrazine levels in the pore water of the sediments ranged from 0.003 to 0.05 mg L−1 in 90 days. Atrazine did not show obvious long-term effects on the biomass of Potamogeton crispus and Myriophyllum spicatum (P > 0.05). On day 90, gene expressions related to cell wall in P. crispus were changed by atrazine phytotoxicity. Moreover, the decrease in the number genes controlling light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-binding proteins verified the toxic effects of atrazine on the photosynthesis of M. spicatum. Compared with unexposed plants on day 90, ribosome pathway was significantly enriched with differentially expressed genes after submerged macrophytes were exposed to 2.0 mg kg−1 DW atrazine (P < 0.05). In addition, shoots and roots of P. crispus and M. spicatum could absorb the equal amount of atrazine (P > 0.05). Once absorbed by submerged macrophytes, atrazine was degraded into 1-hydroxyisopropylatrazine, hydroxyatrazine, deethylatrazine, didealkylatrazine, cyanuric acid, and biuret, and some of its metabolites could conjugate with organic acids, cysteinyl β-alanine, and glucose. This study establishes a foundation for aquatic ecological risk assessments and the phytoremediation of atrazine in sediments.

Abstract:Atrazine is a widely used chlorinated triazine herbicide in agricultural settings, which has raised concerns over its potential adverse effects on human health. The extensive application of atrazine has resulted in its pervasive presence in the environment, contaminating soil, groundwater, and surface water. While earlier research suggested that atrazine is unlikely to pose a health concern, recent evidence has indicated the necessity to reassess this point of view. This review aims to assess the recent evidence on atrazine's adverse effects on human health, focusing on (i) Cancer, (ii) Metabolic Diseases, (iii) Reproductive System, (iv) Neural System, and (v) Epigenetic Effects. Strategies to mitigate atrazine contamination and limitations of previous studies are also discussed. We strongly believe that further investigation is necessary to determine the potential detrimental consequences of atrazine in humans, particularly in developing countries, where herbicides are widely used without stringent safety regulations. Therefore, the current review will be beneficial for guiding future research and regulatory measures concerning the use of atrazine.

Abstract:The research progress in ecological environmental impact of the veterinary drug residues was reviewed from the aspects of the environmental behavior of the veterinary drug residues such as transportation,accumulation and degradation and their influences on animals,plants and microorganisms,etc.The research priorities in the field of eco-toxicities of veterinary drug residues were prospected.It is pointed out that many veterinary drugs are adsorbed by soil and accumulated by plants,earthworms,and other organisms.The effects of veterinary drugs on plants and soil microbial community are mainly dependent on the properties of veterinary drugs and types of soil.The antimicrobials easily induce bacterial resistance and even pollution-induces community tolerance(PICT) in soil.So veterinary drug residues become long-term risks to ecosystem health including human beings.

Abstract:Atrazine is one of the most widely applied and persistent herbicides in the world. In view of limited information on the regional contamination of atrazine in soils in China, this study investigated the spatial distribution and environmental impacts of atrazine in agricultural soils collected from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) as an illustrative analysis of rapidly developing regions in the country. The results showed that the concentrations of atrazine in the YRD agricultural soils ranged from <1.0 to 113 ng/g dry weight, with a mean of 5.7 ng/g, and a detection rate of 57.7 % in soils. Pesticide factory might be a major source for the elevated levels of atrazine in Zhejiang Province. The contamination of atrazine was closely associated with land use types. The concentrations and detection rates of atrazine were higher in corn fields and mulberry fields than in rice paddy fields. There was no significant difference in compositions of soil microbial phospholipids fatty acids among the areas with different atrazine levels. Positive relationship (R = 0.417, p < 0.05, n = 30) was observed between atrazine and total microbial biomass. However, other factors, such as soil type and land management practice, might have stronger influences on soil microbial communities. Human health risks via exposure to atrazine in soils were estimated according to the methods recommended by the US EPA. Atrazine by itself in all the soil samples imposed very low carcinogenic risks (<10−6) and minimal non-cancer risks (hazard index <1) to adults and children.
Uptake and Removal Efficiency of Atrazine in Soil by Several Weeds

Abstract:Atrazine was the most commonly detected herbicide contaminating soil and water. Phytoremediation has been approved to a cost-effective technique. In this study, a pot experiment was carried out to compare the uptake and removal efficiency of atrazine in soil by seven weeds. Enrichment and transfer characteristics of atrazine in plants as well as relationships between the removal efficiency of atrazine and plant biomass, root growth were also investigated. Growing plants profoundly improved the removal efficiency of atrazine from soil. Compared with the control, the highest removal efficiency of atrazine was found in Pennisetum hydridumn with the removal efficiency being increased by 40.37%. The removal efficiency of atrazine was in order of P. hydridum﹥Saccharum arundinaceum﹥Lolium perenne L.﹥Festuca elata﹥Solanum nigrum L.﹥Gramineae﹥C. rotundus, and was significantly positively correlated with plant biomass(r=0.838)and ratio of root to shoot biomass(r=0.866). Seven weed plants did show absorption, enrichment and transfer of atrazine to some extents. The enrichment co-efficient and transfer coefficient of P. hydridum was the highest, which were 0.54 and 2.81, respectively, followed by those of S. arundi-naceum and F. elata. In sum, P. hydridum, S. arundinaceum and F. elata could be recommended for restoring atrazine contaminated soils.
The toxic effects of chronic atrazine exposure on the intestinal microbiota, metabolism and transcriptome of Pelophylax nigromaculatus larvae

Abstract:Atrazine, a widely used herbicide, is a potential threat to the intestines of animals due to its long-term persistence in water and accumulation in animal tissues, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. In this study, we evaluated the toxicity of atrazine (50, 100, and 500 μg/L) on the intestine of Pelophylax nigromaculatus larvae from Gosner stages 18–42 (about 90 days). We conducted a 16S rRNA gene amplification study, which showed that chronic exposure to atrazine changed the diversity and composition of intestinal microbiota of P. nigromaculatus larvae. Chronic exposure to atrazine (50, 100, and 500 μg/L) significantly decreased the relative abundance of Fusobacteria and U114 , while 50 μg/L and 100 μg/L atrazine resulted in a significant increase of Clavibacter. The LC-MS/MS metabolomics indicated that there were 145 significantly changed metabolites. Furthermore, atrazine led to metabolic abnormalities related to purine metabolism and biosynthesis of amino acids in the intestine. The transcriptomic results showed that atrazine exposure caused 21,120 differentially expressed genes between the control and the atrazine exposure groups. Atrazine exposure primarily disturbed the pathways related to the cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction and cell adhesion molecules. Moreover, 500 μg/L atrazine caused a significant up-regulation in the gene expression of apolipoprotein ( ApoA1, ApoB, and ApoA4 ), and fatty acid binding protein ( FABP1 ), as well as a significant down-regulation in the gene expression of superoxide dismutase ( SOD ). Our work provides insight into the ecotoxicity mechanisms of atrazine in amphibians at the level of intestinal microbiota response, metabolome and transcriptome, and serves as a basis for future research on pesticide pollutants.

In this paper, we summarize the framework and present progress of the resarch of safety risk assessment of heavy metals in agricultural products. Meanwhile, some current research topics related to risk assessment of heavy metals in agricultrual products were presented, and risk assessment of heavy metals in agricultural fields was also generalized. Finally, it was pointed that the further research trends for risk assesmment of heavy metals in agricultural products and environment.
Effects of Nitrogenous and Phosphorous Fertilizers on Dissipation of Atrazine in Soil

Abstract:The effects of nitrogenous and phosphorous fertilizers on dissipation of atrazine herbicide in three soils,paddy field on desalting muddy polder,blue clayed paddy soil and paddy field on quaternary red clay,spiked with atrazine herbicides were investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. The results showed that nitrogenous and phosphorous fertilizers can speed up the dissipation of atrazine in soils. The order of atrazine dissipation followed ANP>AN>AP>A within the same type of soil. And the dissipation of atrazine varied with different soils. The fastest dissipation of atrazine was found in blue clayed paddy soil,followed by paddy field on desalting muddy polder,and the slowest in paddy field on quaternary red clay. The half lives of atrazine were 22.8~30.2 d,25.1~36.6 d and 31.3~45.7 d in paddy field on desalting muddy polder,blue clayed paddy soil,and paddy field on quaternary red clay,respectively. The dissipation of atrazine related to the basic properties of soil and environment. The nitrogenous and phosphorous fertilizers could enhance dissipation of atrazine in soil,thus helpful to remediate the soil pollution of atrazine.

Abstract:Atrazine, a herbicide used for controlling broadleaf weeds, has been one of the predominant pollutants constituting 80–90% of detection frequency in the samples collected from rivers, estuaries, oceans, sediments, agricultural lands, and crops. The fate of atrazine is highly unpredictable depending on the physio-chemical, physiological and geographical conditions. Range of metabolites such as deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropyl atrazine (DIA), and didealkylatrzine (DDA) are formed as a result of biotic as well as abiotic degradation process in the environment following cyanuric acid, ammelide, CO 2 and NH 3 are formed as final products. Atrazine degraded products has shown more hazardous nature than the parent compound, atrazine. Atrazine is banned in Italy, India, Germany and European union but widely used in China, Australian, Canadian and US agriculture. To date, reviews evaluating the assimilation of synerigistic treatment technologies and comparative degration mechanism have not been highlighted. This work focuses on (1) the spatiotemporal distribution of atrazine and its metabolites globally and the factors governing it (2) provides an in-depth discussion about the various studies showing the toxicity of atrazine in microbes, cattle, human, terrestrial and aquatic organisms; (3) discusses the contaminants of emerging concern which are continuously replacing atrazine like terbuthylazine and their intermediate compounds posing more risk to wildlife and humans; (4) summarises the different treatment technologies which have been predominantly applied for the removal of atrazine in water and soil systems and also discusses the synergistic or mutualistic aspects of treatment methods in degrading atrazine.

Abstract:Atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine) is a worldwide-used herbicide and often detected in agricultural soils and groundwater at concentrations above the permitted limit, because of its high mobility, persistence, and massive application. This study applied pot experiments to investigate the atrazine contents and speciation during the phytoremediation process by Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. in laterite soils. From the change of the total atrazine and bioavailable atrazine measured by diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT), P. alopecuroides significantly improved atrazine degradation efficiency from 15.22 to 51.46%, attributing to the increasing bioavailable atrazine in rhizosphere. Only a small amount of atrazine was taken up by P. alopecuroides root and the acropetal translocation from roots to shoots was limited. The atrazine speciation was significantly different between rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere, attributing to the declining pH and organic matters in rhizosphere. The relationship between pH and soil-bound/humus-fixed atrazine illustrated the pH-dependant release of the atrazine from soils and the competition between humus adsorption and uptake by P. alopecuroides. The present study reveals the important roles of soil pH and organic matters in atrazine speciation and availability in laterite soils, and provides new insights in the rhizospheric effects on effective phytoremediation of atrazine.

Effects of Atrazine on Chernozem Microbial Communities Evaluated by Traditional Detection and Modern Sequencing Technology

Abstract:Atrazine is a long residual herbicide commonly used in maize fields. Although atrazine can effectively control weeds and improve crop yield, long-term application leads to continuous pollution in the agricultural ecological environment, especially in the soil ecosystem, and its impact on soil microorganisms is still not clear. Four methods were used in the experiment to clarify the effect of atrazine on the bacterial populations of cultivated soil layers of chernozem in a cold region in different periods: high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), colorimetry, microplate, and high-throughput sequencing. The level of residual atrazine in cold chernozem decreased from 4.645 to 0.077 mg/kg soil over time, and the residue gradually leached into deep soil and then decreased after accumulating to a maximum value. Atrazine significantly affected the activities of urease and polyphenol oxidase activity in the soil layers at different periods but had no significant effect on sucrase and phosphatase activity. Atrazine significantly reduced the diversity of microbial carbon source utilization and total activity in soil layers of 0-10 and 20-30 cm but only reduced the diversity of microbial carbon source utilization in the 10-20 cm layer. Atrazine had no significant effect on bacterial populations (10-12 phyla, 29-34 genera), but had a slight effect on the relative abundance of various groups. Atrazine significantly reduced the diversity of bacterial populations in cultivated soil layers of chernozem in a cold region, and the diversity of bacterial populations decreased with decreased residue. This lays a foundation for guiding the safe use of herbicides on farmland in Northeast China.

Abstract:Atrazine has a detrimental effect on soybean growth in corn-soybean rotation systems. A knowledge gap exists regarding how rhizosphere microbial interactions respond to atrazine stress, and specifically, whether they may alleviate the detriment of atrazine on soybeans, this serving as a target to alleviate the adverse impact. Biochar are widely used for remediation in herbicide contamination soil, however, little is known about how biochar fuels the microbiomes in rhizosphere to improve soybean performance. We investigated the response of the microbial community to atrazine stress with and without biochar application to soybean cultivation in a greenhouse experiment. Atrazine had detrimental effects on soybeans and nodules, reshaping the microbial community in both the bulk and rhizosphere soil. Biochar application was able to ameliorate atrazine effects on soybean and nodule activity, with an increase in competition among microbes in the soybean rhizosphere soils. Biochar favored the probiotics such as the bacteria Lysobacter, Paenarthrobacter, and Sediminibacterium in the rhizosphere soils. The relative abundance of Lysobacter exhibited strong-negative correlations with potential pathogens. Elastic net regression with bioindicators and environmental factors accurately predicted the residual content of atrazine in soil. Collectively, our results provide a practical strategy of using biochar to improve soil quality for corn-soybean rotation that is contaminated with residual atrazine. Overall, beneficial plant microbes and changes in microbial interactions and assembly processes in the soybean rhizosphere are capable of alleviating atrazine stress on soybean growth.
