Abstract:The highly excited vibrational levels of HCO in the electronic ground state, (X) over tilde (1) A', are employed to determine the coefficients of an algebraic Hamiltonian, by which the dynamical potential is derived and shown to be very useful for interpreting the intramolecular vibrational relaxation (IVR) which operates via the HCO bending motion. The IVR inhibits the dissociation of H atom and enhances the stochastic degree of dynamical character. This approach is from a global view point on a series of levels classified by the polyad number which is a constant of motion in a certain dynamical domain. In this way, the seemingly complicated level structure shows very regular picture, dynamically.

Abstract:The dynamical potentials of highly excited vibrational states of HOCl in the bending and OCl stretching coordinates with anharmonicity and Fermi coupling are studied. The result shows that HO stretching vibration mode has significantly different effects on OCl stretching mode and HOCl bending mode under different polyad numbers. The dynamical potentials and the corresponding phase space trajectories are studied in the case that the polyad number is 24 and it is found that the quantal vibrational energy levels could be classified by the fixed points of dynamical potentials and the quantum environments could be identified by the numerical values of action integrals.

Abstract:The fixed points in the dynamical potentials of phosphaethyne (HCP) and deuterated phosphaethyne (DCP) derived in the coset space are identified and shown to govern the various quantal environments in which the vibrational states lie. The state dynamics is interpreted and classified by the classical actions and action integrals. This is closely related to the fixed point structure. Localized modes even at high excitation are identified. Most important is that the dynamical similarity between these two systems is identified which enables us to understand the DCP dynamics simply from that of HCP without repeated elaboration.
Regular Classification of Highly Excited Vibrational Levels and Its Physical Background

Abstract:In the algebraic method, we see that one characteristic of molecular highly excited vibration is its immense number and high density of states. These quanta are bosons and can populate the various modes and transfer among them. Due to the interaction among the quanta, many quantum numbers are destroyed. The destruction of quantum numbers, in another aspect, implies that their classical analogs, the actions which are continuous variables, have to be employed for the description of highly excited vibration. In classical mechanics, angle is a companion of action. Hence, in the study of molecular highly excited vibration, both action and angle are important physical quantities. Albeit at high excitation, most of the quantum numbers are destroyed and are no longer constants of motion, there are still some good quantum numbers left. These remaining quantum numbers are called the polyad numbers. We note that polyad numbers are only approximate. They are, in fact, conserved only in certain dynamical processes. This is because as time elapses, the dynamics will become very complicated and the resonance forms may vary so that the polyad number as an operator may no longer commute with the full Hamiltonian. Diabatic correlation, formal quantum numbers, and ordering of levels are other topics that are covered. The switching-off of the seven resonances of formaldehyde and the labelings of the various levels via the diabatic correlation is shown in the graph. In acetylene case, the five in-plane motions are studied in detail. The cases of formaldehyde and acetylene show that for the highly excited vibration, by the diabatic correlation, we can employ the quantum numbers of the zeroth-order Hamiltonian, called the formal quantum numbers, to reconstruct its levels in a very regular pattern. Although, due to resonances, these formal quantum numbers are no longer the constants of motion, they are still useful for the ordering of the levels. The background of diabatic correlation shows that besides polyad numbers, other approximately conserved quantities. Approximately conserved quantum numbers are studied with relevant explanation and graphs. DCN case is also studied. The difference between approximate and formal quantum numbers is shown in the table. The density cospace and Lyapunov exponents are calculated for all the exponents studied and are also shown.

Abstract:The vibrational nonlinear dynamics of HOBr in the bending and O–Br stretching coordinates with anharmonicity and Fermi 2:1 coupling are studied with dynamical potentials in this article. The result shows that the H–O stretching vibration mode has significantly different effects on the coupling between the O–Br stretching mode and the H–O–Br bending mode under different Polyad numbers. The dynamical potentials and the corresponding phase space trajectories are obtained when the Polyad number is 27, for instance, and the fixed points in the dynamical potentials of HOBr are shown to govern the various quantal environments in which the vibrational states lie. Furthermore, it is also found that the quantal environments could be identified by the numerical values of action integrals, which is consistent with former research.
Assignment and Statistical Distribution of the Highly Excited Vibrational Energy Levels of CO2

Abstract:The highly excited vibrational energy levels of CO2 up to 20000 cm(-1) have been studied in the Radau coordinates using the lanczos algorithm and potential optimized discrete variable representation. The 500 levels below 20000 cm(-1) are assigned with approximate normal mode quantum numbers. The Fermi resonance and anharmonicity of the high-lying vibrational levels have also been analyzed. Besides, the statistical distribution of the calculated energy levels shows that the vibrational spectra of CO2 are largely regular in the energy range up to 20000 cm(-1).

Abstract:The concepts of classical nonlinear dynamics are employed to interpret the spectroscopic properties of the molecular highly excited vibration. These concepts include the Morse oscillator, the pendulum dynamics, chaos and the overlapping of resonances leading to chaos. The relations of resonance, constant of motion and the basic dynamical unit to the pendulum dynamics are stressed. An algebraic Hamiltonian in the coset space is employed for the dynamical analysis from which the dynamical potential can be easily obtained. The dynamical potential is closely related to the classical fixed points in which the quantized levels are embedded in various quantal environments. Localized modes are easily identified in various systems which share similar dynamical potentials. The dissociation of DCO radical is finally interpreted by these concepts from the classical nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:The vibrational dynamics of HOCl and HOBr between bending and OCl/OBr stretching coordinates with anharmonicity and Fermi coupling is studied with the classical dynamical potential approach. The quantal vibrational dynamics is mostly mapped out by the classical nonlinear variables such as fixed points, except for the state energies, which are quantized. This approach is global in the sense that the focus is on a set of levels instead of individual ones. The dynamics of HOBr is demonstrated to be less complicated. The localized modes along the OCl/OBr stretching coordinates are also shown to have O-Br bonds more prone to dissociation.

Abstract:Chaotic dynamics of highly excited vibration of deuterium cyanide is explored by two independent approaches: (1) the Lyapunov analysis, based on the classical phase space for the levels, and (2) the Dixon dip analysis based on the concepts of pendulum dynamics and quantized levels. The results show that there is evident correlation between these two algorithms. We also propose that the reciprocal of energy difference between two nearby Dixon dips can be taken as a qualitative measure for the degree of dynamical chaos.

Abstract:Highly excited vibrational dynamics of phosphaethyne (HCP) integrable system are investigated based on its dynamic potentials. Taking into consideration the 2:1 Fermi resonance between H-C-P bending vibrational mode and C-P stretching vibrational mode, it is found that the effects of H-C stretching vibrational mode on vibrational dynamic features of the HCP integrable system are significant and regularly vary with Polyad numbers (P number). The geometrical profiles of the dynamic potentials and the corresponding fixed points are sensitive to the variation of H-C stretching vibrational strength when P numbers are small, but are not sensitive when P numbers become larger and the corresponding threshold values become lower. The phase space trajectories of different energy levels in a designated dynamic potential (P = 28) were studied and the results indicated that the dynamic potentials govern the various dynamic environments in which the vibrational states lie. Furthermore, action integrals of the energy levels contained in dynamic potential (P = 28) were quantitatively analyzed and elucidated. It was determined that the dynamic environments could be identified by the numerical values of the action integrals of trajectories of phase space, which is equivalent with dynamic potentials.

Abstract:The authors report extensive high-level ab initio studies of the first excited ((A) over tilde (2)A') state of HO2. A global potential energy surface (PES) was developed by spline-fitting 17 000 ab initio points at the internal contracted multireference configuration interaction (icMRCI) level with the AVQZ basis set. To ascertain the spectroscopic accuracy of the PES, the near-equilibrium region of the molecule was also investigated using three interpolating moving least-squares-based PESs employing dynamically weighted icMRCI methods in the complete basis set limit. Vibrational energy levels on all four surfaces agree well with each other and a new assignment of some vibrational features is proposed. In addition, the dynamics of both the forward and reverse directions of the H+O-2((a) over tilde (1)Delta(g))<-> OH + O reaction (J=0) were studied using an exact wave packet method. Abstract:The two-mode coupling in analogy with the motion of the pendulum is proposed by an algebraic approach, which is based on an algebraic classical Hamiltonian on the coset sphere. The analysis of the molecular highly excited vibration of H2O shows that the chaotic motion in the coset (phase) space is most probable in the levels close to the separatrix, while the regularity is dominant for the lower or higher levels.

Abstract:The generalized oscillator strengths (GOSs) of Na from the ground state [2p(6)3s] 3 (2)S excited to [2p(6)(n + 1)s](n + 1) (2)S, [2p(6)np]n (2)P, [2p(6)nd]n (2)D(3 <= n <= infinity) and adjacent continuum states are systematically investigated by the R-matrix method within the first Born approximation. The calculated energy levels of Na(+) and Na are in good agreement with the experimental values. The energy dependence of the GOS extrema for the monopole, dipole and quadrupole transitions is investigated. The GOS density surfaces of (2)S, (2)P and (2)D channels are calculated and their accuracies are tested rigorously by the available experiments as well as by the comparisons between the calculations on the different bases and the sum rule. With the surfaces tested, the high-energy electron impact excitation cross sections of the infinite Rydberg states near the threshold can be readily obtained by interpolations. In addition, the GOSDs for the resonance transitions 2p(6)3s -> 2p(5)3s(2) and 2p(6)3s -> 2p(5)3s3p are investigated.

Abstract:The state-to-state photodissociassion dynamics for the B band of D2O have been explored from quantum dynamical calculations including the electronic ̃X and ̃B states. The calculations were carried out using a Chebyshev real wave packet method. The calculated absorption spectra, product state distributions, and branching ratios from different initial vibrational states show different dynamic features, due to the different shapes of the vibrational wavefunctions. The initial bending mode (0,1,0) generates two lobes with a shallow minimum on the absorption spectrum and a slight inverted vibrational population of OD(̃X) product at high total energies. The rotational state distributions of OD(̃X, v=0) product are highly inverted and depend weakly on the initial state and total energy. On the other hand, the ro-vibrational distributions of OD(̃A) product strongly oscillate with the total energy, which are dominated by the long-living resonances and depend sensitively on the potential surfaces. The antisymmetric stretching mode (0,0,1) has large OD(̃A)/OD(̃X) branching ratios at high total energies, which indicates that the B band dissociation proceeds mainly via the adiabatic pathway in some cases.

Abstract:Quasi-classical trajectory studies have been carried out for the HO + CO → H + CO2 reaction and H + CO2 inelastic collision on a recently developed global potential energy surface based on a large number of high-level ab initio points. The CO2 vibrational state distributions for these processes have been determined using an original normal-mode analysis method. It was found that the CO2 product of the reaction is highly excited in both the Fermi-linked bending and symmetric stretching modes, but little population was found in the antisymmetric stretching mode. The substantial excitation of the CO2 vibration, while consistent with the geometry of the transition state in the exit channel, is in disagreement with available experimental data. For the inelastic collision, the CO2 is much less excited despite much higher total energies. In addition, excitations in all vibrational modes were found, in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract:A potential energy surface for the electronic ground state of carbonyl sulfide was optimized by using a self-consistent configuration-interaction method and involving the recently observed vibrational band origins up to 8000 cm−1. With the optimized potential, the vibrational energy levels of OCS up to 15000 cm−1 were computed using the discrete variable representation method and Lanczos algorithm. Approximately 480 vibrational energy levels were identified. The statistical investigation showed that the vibrational energy levels of OCS up to 15000 cm−1 are largely regular.
Full-Dimensional Quantum Dynamics of Vibrational Mediated Photodissociation of HOD in Its B Band.

Abstract:The photodissociation dynamics for the ground and three fundamental vibrational states of HOD were explored from quantum dynamical calculations including the electronic X̃, Ã, and B̃ states. The calculations were based on a Chebyshev real wave packet method. Due to the different shapes of the initial vibrational wave functions and isotopic effect, the calculated absorption spectra, product state distributions, and branching ratios show different dynamic features. The initial bending excited vibtaional state (0, 1, 0) generates a bimodal behavior on the absorption spectrum and an inverted vibrational population of OD(X̃) fragment at some total energies. The rotational state distributions from four vibrational states have two different behaviors. One has a single broad peak, whereas the other one has a bimodal structure. Large OD(Ã)/OD(X̃) ratios are found for photodissociation from four vibrational states at high total energies, which indicate that the H atom dissociates mainly via the adiabatic pathway. We also calculated the OD/OH isotopic branching ratios from four vibrational states and found that the OD + H production channel is dominant over the OH + D channel in the energy range considered. The calculated results are consistent with the available observed ones.

Abstract:We investigate two types of excited oscillons. We first focus on spherical symmetry and find that there are a tower of spherical oscillons with higher energies. Despite having multiple approximate "nodes" in their energy density profiles, these oscillons are long-lived. We find that during the lifetime of an excited oscillon it will cascade down all of the lower energy levels before its disintegration, with each level-dropping period accompanied by a short burst of energy. We also point out the existence of excited oscillons with higher approximate multipoles, which generally have shorter lifespans than the spherical ones. Abstract:The potential energy surface for the electronic ground state of the CO2 molecule was optimized by using the self-consistent field-configuration interaction method and involving the 49 observed vibrational energy levels below 20 000 cm(-1). The root-mean-square error of this fitting is 1.50 cm(-1). The rovibrational energy levels for the Sigma and Pi vibrational states are calculated to test the refined potential.

Abstract:For the eigenstates of the highly excited vibration of the simple molecule DCN with two stretching modes, a classical approach in a multi-dimensional coset phase space is employed to show that the formal quantum numbers are related to regular or least "irregular" trajectories, with zero or least Lyapunov exponents, and are always located in the inner regions of the phase space. This property reflects that they are the approximate constants of motion. It is also demonstrated that formal quantum numbers correspond to the significant phase space density.
