Abstract:Extended Interaction Oscillator (EIO) is a promising Terahertz (THz) high power source, which has many important applications, such as military radar, medical imaging and material science research, etc. For the design being consistent with manufacture, the compact structure of folded waveguide is used for 0.225THz EIO high frequency structure. Moreover, for improvements of operation performance, a novel type of two-section folded waveguide high frequency structure is presented. In this paper, the optimizations of folded structure are conducted by three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. Up to now, the novel structure has been manufactured and cold test experiment is being prepared.

Abstract:A new terahertz extended-interaction oscillator with disk-loaded waveguide is presented in this paper.The device consists of an input cavity resonator with disk-loaded waveguide,a drift tube and an output cavity.A two and one half dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulation code is used to investigate it and the results demonstrate that the total length of the slow wave structure,the length of the drift tube and the height of the output cavity affect the output power and frequency remarkably.It is found that under the condition of the electron beam with voltage 27.7 kV and current 20 mA,peak output power of 442.1 mW at 730.86 GHz is generated.

Abstract:Folded waveguides are common slow wave structures in traveling-wave tubes (TWT) where energy transferred from electronic beam to microwave. Efficiency of energy transition and S-parameters of a folded waveguide affect a TWT's bandwidth, output power and gain performance, etc. In this paper, we propose a finite-element framework for electromagnetic wave simulation of TWT. Arbitrary high order mesh and basis function techniques are integrated, as well as a geometry manifold embedded information for efficient mesh refinement.
Power Enhancement of 0.22-THz Extended Interaction Oscillator Based on Orthogonal Interconnection Structure With Output Coupler

Abstract:In this study, an output coupler is proposed to enhance the power of a four-sheet-beam orthogonal interconnection structure (OIS). The OIS is composed of four conventional ladder-line slow wave structures interconnected orthogonally. The OIS not only retains the high-order mode working mechanism and can perfectly interact with the TM81 mode but also increases the coupling efficiency between each cavity. The output structure adopts double coupling holes for output based on the characteristics of the electric field in the coupling cavity being in phase. Furthermore, the output coupler is designed to consist of an H–T type combiner, an H-bend waveguide, and a standard rectangular waveguide WR-4, since the H–T type combiner can combine two input waves in the same phase. After optimizing the structure parameters, the designed output coupler significantly improves the output power and efficiency. The dispersion characteristics and S-parameter are first studied through numerical and simulation calculations, and the optimal operating parameters and output structure are analyzed using particle-in-cell (PIC) software. Next, a 0.22-THz four-sheet-beam OIS extended interaction oscillator (EIO) with an output coupler is designed. Simulation results reveal that the achievement of the output power of 0.22-THz wave over 1000 W with an operating voltage of 16.7 kV and a current density of 300 A/cm2. The 3-dB bandwidth is 0.35 GHz, which has increased by 66.7% compared with the single-sheet-beam ladder-line EIO. The research results provide a new approach to improving the power limit of terahertz EIOs.

Abstract:The extended-interaction oscillator with disk-loaded waveguide is presented as a new terahertz vacuum electronic radiation source. The device consists of an input cavity resonator with disk-loaded waveguide, a drift tube and an output cavity. A two and one half dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulation code is used to investigate it and the results demonstrate that the total length of the slow wave structure, the length of the drift tube and the radius of the output cavity affect the output power and frequency remarkably. Abstract:In this article, a scheme with a designed overmoded multigap circuit based on the TM13 mode and linearly distributed two electron beams is proposed for power enhancement of sub-THz extended interaction oscillators (EIOs). The analysis of the electromagnetic characteristics shows that the designed circuit can reproduce the resonant frequency, field distribution, and ohmic loss of the conventional multigap circuit with a single beam. When considering the same beam power injected into the designed and conventional circuit, the analysis of the beam loading shows the same effect on the circuit oscillation through the comparison in the electron conductance between two circuits. To examine the performance of the designed circuit, the EIOs are designed with two circuits at 0.22 THz. The analysis of the coupling coefficients between two circuits, combined with pic simulations, shows that the designed circuit produces the efficient interaction with two beams and, most importantly, two beam–wave interaction units can promote and achieve each other. The EIO with the designed circuit can deliver kW-level power at 0.22 THz. Accordingly, the proposed scheme has shown great potential in enhancing the power of sub-THz EIOs.

Abstract:Here, we present the complete design process of a highly overmoded slow wave circuit (SWC) stably operating in the quasi-TM04 mode for terahertz (THz) extended interaction oscillator (EIO). The developed interaction circuit emits THz frequency electromagnetic radiation through structural size of the engineered millimeter-wave (MMW) circuits, which provides a new technological horizon for overcoming the engineering challenges caused by the limitation of circuit size. Through careful engineering of the electron optical system, a cylindrical beam with a diameter of 0.38 mm and a current of 0.25 A is obtained at a bias of 14.8 kV. Through the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation, these new design approaches have been shown to achieve an output power of 250 W at 0.3 THz in a cylindrical cavity with an inner diameter of 4.16 mm.

Abstract:In vacuum electronics, the influence of the uniformity of electron beams on the performance of two- or multi-beam devices is a key scientific problem in the development of compact, high power millimeter-wave and terahertz (THz) sources. In this letter, we focus on this problem in extended interaction oscillators (EIOs) and propose a tractable extended resonant circuit that has no requirement for the uniformity of beams. The circuit design builds up a TM13 mode mechanism to support two nonuniform beams, based on maintaining the same electromagnetic characteristics of conventional resonant circuits used in single-beam EIOs. To verify this idea, we designed and simulated a 0.22-THz EIO with the proposed circuit. As the current of one beam is I1 and that of another beam is increased from 0 to 4I1, the EIO has shown the behavior of linearly increasing the output power and then becoming saturated through particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The ideal case is the currents of the two beams are the same at the same voltage to drive the EIO. This case can reduce the high current density required for start oscillation in single-beam EIOs and obtain high power. Simulation results show that the power of 0.22-THz wave over 1.32 kW is obtained using double beams at 22.2 kV and each current of 0.25 A.

Abstract:The extended interaction oscillator (EIO) is considered to be a novel type of high power terahertz (THz) source, which has promising application prospects in radar, medical imaging etc. Up to now, CPI and other institutes have developed many types of EIO. Currently the G-band EIO is being developed at the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS). The electric and structural designs for the EIO have been accomplished, in which many technical problems are continued to be resolved. The design of electron optics system for EIO has been finished and the permanent magnetic field is adopted. This paper presents mainly the design of electron optics system for the G-band EIO in detail.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to enhance extended interaction oscillator (EIO) output power based on a dual-cavity parallel structure (DCPS). This stucture consists of two conventional ladder-line structures in parallel through a connecting structure, which improves the coupling efficiency between the cavities. The dual output power fusion structure employs an H-T type combiner as the output coupler, which can effectively combine the two input waves in phase to further increase the output power. The dispersion characteristics, coupling impedance, and field distribution of the DCPS are investigated through numerical and simulation calculations, and the optimal operating parameters and output structure are obtained by PIC simulation. At an operating voltage of 12.6 kV, current density of 200 A/cm2, and longitudinal magnetic field of 0.5 T, the DCPS EIO exhibits an output power exceeding 600 W at a frequency of 140.6 GHz. This represents a nearly three-fold enhancement compared with the 195 W output of the conventional ladder-line EIO structure. These findings demonstrate the significant improvement in output power and interaction efficiency achieved by the DCPS for the EIO device.

Abstract:Folded waveguide (FWG) traveling wave tube (TWT) is an attractive choice for a high-power amplifier. This article proposes a novel slow wave structure (SWS) called sine-shaped FWG (S-FWG), which is derived from conventional FWG. With the feature of transforming the arc-shaped segment of the traditional FWG into the sinusoidal waveguide, the proposed structure could be quickly optimized by modifying the amplitude of the two sine curves, and it has an ability to produce a greater interaction impedance compared to the traditional FWG SWS with the same frequency band, which, under the same operating conditions, is expected to result in a higher output power. Using CST Microwave Studio, the high-frequency properties and beam–wave interaction were simulated. Simulation results indicate that the S-FWG TWT reaches a maximum output power of 16.82 W and a gain of 32.25 dB at 330 GHz with an operating voltage of 19.4 kV, a beam current of 30 mA, and an input power of 10 mW. The S-FWG SWS should therefore be regarded as a promising SWS for the high-power terahertz (THz) traveling wave amplifier.

High-efficiency terahertz-wave generation based on extended interaction oscillator with strongly-coupled 2π mode operation

Abstract:A slow-wave structure improvement for enhancing the 2π-mode electronic efficiency is embodied in the validation of an extended interaction oscillator (EIO), which has an electronic efficiency of 6.52% at 0.22 THz from particle-in-cell (PIC) calculations. A 2π-mode bi-periodic slow-wave structure (BPSWS) with staggered long and short slots is utilized for optimizing the circuit performance. The proposed BPSWS has the capability of combining the respective advantages for both π and 2π-mode in terms of coupling performance and output performance, thus supporting a strongly-coupled 2π-mode with higher coupling capability. Compared with the typical mono-periodic SWS (MPSWS), the adopted strongly-coupled 2π-mode effectively improves the characteristic impedance M2R/Q by 103% to 66.79 Ω, the coupling coefficient by 66% to 0.497, and the normalized wave-amplitude by 22%. Accordingly, 503 W of average output power can be derived for the BPSWS-EIO with a 25.7 kV and 0.3 A sheet beam injected. Cold-test experiments were conducted, confirming that the 0.22 THz structure exhibits commendable fabrication precision and consistency and thus demonstrates the expected frequency response.

Abstract:To meet the demand of large transmission capacity in high-speed terahertz wireless transmission link, a broadband Orthomode Transducer (OMT) working at 275-296GHz is designed based on double-ridged waveguide junction. It is implemented in split-block using high precision CNC milling. The measured results shows that its return loss is less than -15dB and insertion loss is less than 3dB, and the polarization isolation is higher than 20dB, which can gurantee its applications in the dual-polarized antenna.

Abstract:A novel multi-cavity extended interaction klystron (EIK) is designed as a coherent radiation source for THz science and technology application. The cavities adopt a composite structure with a double grating and sub-wavelength holes array structure. The high frequency characteristics of the structure are analyzed. The grating height and holes length have main influences on the frequency variation.The 3D Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation predicts that the designed multi-cavity EIK produces stable 19-W output power from a 7-mW input driving signal, with 34-dB gain, at 0.3THz.

Abstract:In this paper,the basic equations of beam-wave interaction for designing the 220 GHz folded waveguide(FW)backward wave oscillator(BWO) are described.On the whole,these equations are mainly classified into small signal model(SSM),large signal model(LSM),and simplified small signal model(SSSM).Using these linear and nonlinear one-dimensional(1D) models,the oscillation characteristics of the FW BWO of a given configuration of slow wave structure(SWS) can be calculated by numerical iteration algorithm,which is more time efficient than three-dimensional(3D)particle-in-cell(PIC) simulation.The SSSM expressed by analytical formulas is innovatively derived for determining the initial values of the FW SWS conveniently.The dispersion characteristics of the FW are obtained by equivalent circuit analysis.The space charge effect,the end reflection effect,the lossy wall effect,and the relativistic effect are all considered in our models to offer more accurate results.The design process of the FW BWO tube with output power of watt scale in a frequency range between 215 GHz and 225 GHz based on these 1D models is demonstrated.The 3D PIC method is adopted to verify the theoretical design results,which shows that they are in good agreement with each other.

Abstract:This paper analyses the modeling and numerical simulation of an E-band folded waveguide traveling wave tube (FWG TWT) using the 3-D-FDTD-PIC parallel code. The cold test simulation of 10 ns time length requires only about 31 min and the hot test simulation can be realized accurately within 43 min. For 3-D-FDTD-PIC hot test simulations, electron bunching and particle velocity modulation phenomenon are observed clearly in the FWG TWT. Moreover, the maximum error of the simulated power in the frequency range from 81 GHz to 87 GHz is only 0.31 dB. Combing with our previous work on helix TWT, the present work well demonstrates the generality of 3-D-FDTD-PIC code for the simulation of different types of TWTs.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) backward wave oscillators (BWOs) hold immense potential for a broad range of industrial and military applications. This study presents a comparative analysis of 0.34 THz sheet beam (SB) and circular beam (CB) folded waveguide (FWG) BWOs. We examined the design, simulation (CST MWS and PS, HFSS), and performance, revealing that sheet beam BWO outperforms circular beam BWO in terms of interaction impedance, power, efficiency, and bandwidth. Under 20 kV beam voltage and 10 mA beam current conditions, sheet beam BWO achieves 0.47 (0.34 THz) interaction impedance, 0.65 W output power, and a bandwidth of approximately 12 GHz, surpassing the 0.18 , 0.23 W, and 8.5 GHz values of circular beam BWO, respectively. Furthermore, this study encompasses the fabrication and thorough characterization of the sheet beam BWO's slow-wave structure. Experimental validation confirms its effectiveness, with measured demonstrating reflection below 10 dB and exhibiting transmission above 2 dB.

Abstract:In this article, a compact E-shaped waveguide relativistic extended interaction oscillator (ESW-REIO) is proposed, leveraging a 0.27 T guided magnetic field to address the crucial needs for miniaturization, lightweight design, and mobility in high-power microwave (HPM) systems. The study conducts a thorough analysis of low guiding magnetic field transmission under relativistic conditions, highlighting the challenges in achieving high efficiency in devices operating under low magnetic fields and subsequently presenting a solution. It includes an in-depth examination of the electromagnetic properties of the ESW-REIO's single cavity and its extended interaction with a triple-cavity structure. Cold-test experiment was conducted on the proposed device, yielding a frequency response consistent with the simulation results. Employing a 450 kV, 700 A circular electron beam within a 0.27 T guiding magnetic field, PIC simulations indicate a potential output power of 115.5 MW at 5.68 GHz, achieving a peak efficiency of 36.7%.

Abstract:A narrow coupling ladder-type extended interaction klystron (EIK) operating at 0.34 THz is proposed and analyzed. Compared with the traditional THz EIKs, the narrow coupling EIK can offer higher power capability and increased efficiency because such arrangement has higher characteristic impedance and a more uniform electric field in the beam tunnel. This article studies the electric field distribution of the narrow coupling circuits and traditional circuits. Moreover, the coefficient of variation is introduced to quantify the uniformity of the axial electric field in the beam tunnel. The operating stability is also ensured by adjusting the period length and number of cells. The 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation predicts the ideal EIK, driven by a 0.15-A, 17.5-kV electron beam confined in a 0.22-mm diameter beam tunnel, and generates an output power of 41 W. The corresponding gain, electronic efficiency, and 3-dB bandwidth are 28.03 dB, 1.56%, and 600 MHz, respectively. Finally, in order to verify the feasibility of the designed structure, we perform a sensitivity study on the EIK design for an eight-micron fabrication tolerance assuming normal distributions for all critical dimensions per each cell with PIC simulations.
