On the mechanism of extinguishing open space pool fire with a steam fire-suppression system

Abstract:In the paper,we are inclined to report our experimental findings as to the mechanism of open space pool fire extinguishing by using a steam fire suppression system in a local application.For our research purpose,we have done two groups of contrast experiments, one of which was total-flooding protection system experiment with a porous plug to avoid the dynamic effects of the steam and the other of which was the local application system experiments without porous plug.The two groups of the experiments were designed to analyze the extinguishing time,the flaming temperature,the steam dynamic effects and the fire extinguishing process of the fire extinguishment.The porous plug,which leads to different directions and low velocities of the streams of the steam,was designed to dispel the dynamic effects. The experimental results of ours show that all the fires can be extinguished instantly with the steam in about 3 seconds with the protection of local application system.At the same time,the total-flooding protection system indicated a relatively lower extinguishing-efficiency at the same steam generating rate for the same fire size.However,for the local application system,the fire extinguishing process and flame structure were recorded by a digital video and infrared camera,whose pictures were studied frame by frame to analyze the flame structure and the dynamic effects of the steam to the flame.The photos show that the flame tended to get enhanced and more turbulent when the steam impinged,but the fire were soon to get stamped out.In addition, some theoretical calculations had been carried out to confirm the dynamic effects of the steam.For instance,the momentum of the steam turned out remarkably larger than the momentum of the flame, since the steam density and velocity turned out larger than that of the flame.Thus,the experimental results and the theoretical calculations help to conclude that the dynamic effects were the dominant mechanisms of such pool fire extinguishment with steam in local application.
