Abstract:We propose a scheme for realizing a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of a small number of optical photons. Our scheme has two stages: First, we couple a propagating light pulse with fixed photon number to a trapped cold atomic gas within a cavity, such that the pulse is stored within a collective polariton mode. Second, a small-photon-number measurement is engineered by monitoring the cavity-transmission spectrum. Since the polariton mode profile is preserved during the process of detecting the spectrum, photon-number QND measurements could be achieved by retrieving the light pulse from the polariton mode. We also discuss a method which uses QND measurements to generate small-photon Fock states.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the use of quantum nondemolition measurement to enhance the sensitivity of atom interferometry with Bose-condensed atoms. In particular, we are concerned with enhancing existing high-precision atom interferometry apparatuses, and so restrict ourselves to dilute atomic samples and the use of free-propagating light or optical cavities in the weak-coupling regime. We find the optimum parameter regime that balances between spin squeezing and atomic loss and find that significant improvements in sensitivity are possible. Abstract:When atoms are illuminated by an off-resonant field, the AC Stark effect will lead to phase shifts in atomic states. The phase shifts are proportional to the photon number of the off-resonant illuminating field. By measuring the atomic phase with newly developed atom-light hybrid interferometers, we can achieve quantum non-demolition measurement of the photon number of the optical field. In this paper, we analyze theoretically the performance of this QND measurement scheme by using the QND measurement criteria established by Holland et al [Phys. Rev. A 42, 2995 (1990)]. We find the quality of the QND measurement depends on the phase resolution of the atom-light hybrid interferometers. We apply this QND measurement scheme to a twin-photon state from parametric amplifier to verify the photon correlation in the twin beams. Furthermore, a sequential QND measurement procedure is analyzed for verifying the projection property of quantum measurement and for the quantum information tapping. Finally, we discuss the possibility for single-photon-number-resolving detection via QND measurement.

Abstract:We propose a method to produce a definite number of ground-state atoms by adiabatic reduction of the depth of a potential well that confines a degenerate Bose gas with repulsive interactions. Using a variety of methods, we map out the maximum number of particles that can be supported by the well as a function of the well depth and interaction strength, covering the limiting case of a Tonks gas as well as the mean-field regime. We also estimate the time scales for adiabaticity and discuss the recent observation of atomic number squeezing [Chuu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 260403 (2005)10.1103/PhysRevLett.95.260403].

Abstract:Quantum nondemolition measurement scheme for entangled atomic ensembles was presented when they are restricted in two distant coupled cavities. Under certain conditions, we showed that the entanglement evolution of both the atomic ensembles and cavity fields are of the same periods, which provides us with potential nondemolition measurement of entangled atomic ensembles by experimentally detecting cavity fields. Including the dissipation of the cavity fields, the same steps of evolution still hold. Furthermore, it is shown that we can have the two-mode squeezing steady-states of both the cavity fields and the atomic ensembles, which really provides us with the quantum nondemolition measurement of the entangled atomic state.

Abstract:We propose a theoretical scheme of quantum nondemolition measurement of two-qubit Werner state. We discuss our scheme with the two qubits restricted in a local place and then extend the scheme to the case in which two qubits are separated. We also consider the experimental realization of our scheme based on cavity quantum electrodynamics. It is very interesting that our scheme is robust against the dissipative effects introduced by the probe process. We also give a brief interpretation of our scheme finally.

Abstract:Fluctuations are a key property of both classical and quantum systems. While the fluctuations are well understood for many quantum systems at zero temperature, the case of an interacting quantum system at finite temperature still poses numerous challenges. Despite intense theoretical investigations of atom number fluctuations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), their amplitude in experimentally relevant interacting systems is still poorly understood. Moreover, technical limitations have prevented their experimental observation to date. Here we report the first observation of these fluctuations. Our experiments are based on a stabilization technique, which allows for the preparation of ultracold thermal clouds at the shot noise level, thereby eliminating numerous technical noise sources. Furthermore, we make use of the correlations established by the evaporative cooling process to precisely determine the fluctuations and the sample temperature. This allows us to observe a telltale signature: the sudden increase in fluctuations of the condensate atom number close to the critical temperature.

Abstract:Using the quantum collapse and revival phenomenon of a Bose-Einstein condensate in three-dimensional optical lattices, the atom number statistics on each lattice site are experimentally investigated. We observe an interaction driven time evolution of on-site number fluctuations in a constant lattice potential with the collapse and revival time ratio as the figure of merit. Through a shortcut loading procedure, we prepare a three-dimensional array of coherent states with Poissonian number fluctuations. The following dynamics clearly show the interaction effect on the evolution of the number fluctuations from Poissonian to sub-Poissonian. Our method can be used to create squeezed states, which are important in precision measurement.

Abstract:We analyze a process of splitting of the Bose–Einstein condensate and the mutual coherence of two separated atomic clouds. Within the classical fields approximation we show that coherence between clouds is degraded if atoms interact and if we account for the sufficiently long observation time. Finiteness of observation time corresponds to a coarse graining of a density matrix of atomic field. We also show, that upon recombination, the coherence across the sample is restored. The coherence is not fully degraded if the splitting potential remains sufficiently penetrable. We calculate the variance of atom number difference for this time-averaging measurement and show that for low temperatures it can be well below Poissonian limit like it was observed in the experiments.

Abstract:We propose a method to perform precision measurements of the interaction parameters in systems of N ultra-cold spin 1/2 atoms. The spectroscopy is realized by first creating a coherent spin superposition of the two relevant internal states of each atom and then letting the atoms evolve under a squeezing Hamiltonian. The non-linear nature of the Hamiltonian decreases the fundamental limit imposed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to N^(-2), a factor of N smaller than the fundamental limit achievable with non-interacting atoms. We study the effect of decoherence and show that even with decoherence, entangled states can outperform the signal to noise limit of non-entangled states. We present two possible experimental implementations of the method using Bose-Einstein spinor condensates and fermionic atoms loaded in optical lattices and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:Quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement is an important tool in the fields of quantum information processing and quantum optics. The atom-light hybrid interferometer is of great interest due to its combination of an atomic spin wave and an optical wave, which can be utilized for photon number QND measurement via the AC-Stark effect. In this paper, we present an SU(1,1)-SU(2)-concatenated atom-light hybrid interferometer, and theoretically study QND measurement of the photon number. Compared to the traditional SU(2) interferometer, the signal-to-noise ratio in a balanced case is improved by a gain factor of the nonlinear Raman process (NRP) in this proposed interferometer. Furthermore, the condition of high-quality QND measurement is analyzed. In the presence of losses, the measurement quality is reduced. We can adjust the gain parameter of the NRP in the readout stage to reduce the impact due to losses. Moreover, this scheme is a multiarm interferometer, which has the potential of multiparameter estimation with many important applications in the detection of vector fields, quantum imaging, and so on. © 2022 Chinese Laser Press

Quantum-limited generalized measurement for tunnel-coupled condensates

Abstract:The efficient readout of the relevant information is pivotal for quantum simulation experiments. Often only single observables are accessed by performing standard projective measurements. In this work, we implement a generalized measurement scheme based on controlled outcoupling of atoms. This gives us simultaneous access to number imbalance and relative phase in a system of two tunnel-coupled 1D Bose gases, which realize a quantum simulator of the sine-Gordon field theory. We demonstrate that our measurement is quantum limited by accessing number squeezing and show that we can track Josephson oscillation dynamics with the generalized measurements. Finally, we show that the scheme allows the extraction of atoms while maintaining the system's coherent dynamics, which opens up the door to accessing multi-time correlation functions. Our scheme constitutes a step towards accessing quantum properties of the sine-Gordon field theory and, in the future, studying spatially extended systems under continuous monitoring.

Quantum nondemolition measurement operator with spontaneous emission

Abstract:We present a theory for quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements of an atomic ensemble in the presence of spontaneous emission. We derive the master equation that governs the evolution of the ground state of the atoms and the quantum state of light. Solving the master equation exactly without invoking the Holstein-Primakoff approximation and projecting out the quantum state of light, we derive a positive operator-valued measure that describes the QND measurement. We show that at high spontaneous emission conditions, the QND measurement has a unique dominant state to which the measurement collapses. We additionally investigate the behavior of the QND measurement in the limiting case of strong atom-light interactions, where we show that the positive operator valued measure becomes a projection operator. We further analyze the effect of spontaneous emission noise on atomic state preparation. We find that it limits the width of the eigenvalue spectrum available to a quantum state in a linear superposition. This effect leads to state collapse on the dominant state. We generate various non-classical states of the atom by tuning the atom-light interaction strength. We find that non-classical states such as the Schrödinger-cat state, whose coherence spans the entire eigenvalue spectrum of the total spin operator $J_z$ for a given spin eigenvalue $J$, lose their coherence because spontaneous emission limits the accessibility of states farther away from the dominant state.

Abstract:In quantum interferometry, it is vital to control and utilize nonlinear interactions for the achievement of high-precision measurements. Due to their long coherence time and high controllability, ultracold atoms including Bose condensed atoms have been widely used for quantum interferometry. Here, we review recent progress in theoretical studies of quantum interferometry with Bose condensed atoms. In particular, we focus on nonlinear phenomena induced by atom-atom interactions, and how to control and utilize these nonlinear phenomena. With a mean-field description, due to atom-atom interactions, matter-wave solitons appear in the interference patterns, and macroscopic quantum self-trapping exists in Bose-Josephson junctions. With a many-body description, atom-atom interactions can generate non-classical entanglement, which can be utilized to achieve high-precision measurements beyond the standard quantum limit.

Abstract:Interferometers based on ultra-cold atoms enable an absolute measurement of inertial forces with unprecedented precision. However, their resolution is fundamentally restricted by quantum fluctuations. Improved resolutions with entangled or squeezed atoms were demonstrated in internal-state measurements for thermal and quantum-degenerate atoms and, recently, for momentum-state interferometers with laser-cooled atoms. Here, we present a gravimeter based on Bose-Einstein condensates with a sensitivity of $-1.7^{+0.4}_{-0.5}\,$dB beyond the standard quantum limit. Interferometry with Bose-Einstein condensates combined with delta-kick collimation minimizes atom loss in and improves scalability of the interferometer to very-long baseline atom interferometers.

Abstract:The effect of noise induced by gravitons on a Bose-Einstein condensate has been explored in (Phys. Rev. D 110 (2024) 026014; <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.026014" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>). In the previous paper, we investigated the effects of graviton while detecting a gravitational wave using a Bose-Einstein condensate. In this work we shall explicitly calculate the decoherence due to the noise of gravitons between two momentum states of the Bose-Einstein condensate. This decoherence happens due to Bremsstrahlung from the Bose-Einstein condensates due to the effect of the noise induced by gravitons. It is also observed that the two states become entangled because of the existence of a surrounding graviton field which degrades over time via means of this gravitational Bremsstrahlung. Using this property of the Bose-Einstein condensate in a quantum gravity background, we propose an experimental test via the use of atom lasers (generated from the condensate) which would, in principle, help to detect gravitons in future generations of very advanced ultra-cold temperature experiments.

Abstract:We studied quantum depletion in a gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate. An optical lattice enhanced the atomic interactions and modified the dispersion relation resulting in strong quantum depletion. The depleted fraction was directly observed as a diffuse background in the time-of-flight images. Bogoliubov theory provided a semi-quantitative description for our observations of depleted fractions in excess of 50%.

Abstract:We consider a small F = 1 spinor condensate inside an optical cavity driven by an optical probe field, and subject the output of the probe to a homodyne detection, with the goal of investigating the effect of measurement backaction on the spin dynamics of the condensate. Using the stochastic master equation approach, we show that the effect of backaction is sensitive to not only the measurement strength but also the quantum fluctuation of the spinor condensate. The same method is also used to estimate the atom numbers below which the effect of backaction becomes so prominent that extracting spin dynamics from this cavity-based detection scheme is no longer practical.

Abstract:We provide further details on atom number fluctuation during spin-mixing dynamics inside an $F=1$ spinor condensate, based on the effective quantization approach we reported earlier [L. Chang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 080402 (2007)] for the semiclassical nonrigid pendulum model in terms of the relative phase and the atomic population in the magnetic $(B\text{\ensuremath{-}})$field insensitive hyperfine state $|{F}_{z}=0⟩$. Many features of the classical nonrigid pendulum model are reproduced. In addition, features typically associated with full quantum simulations specific to our model system, such as atom number fluctuations both in stationary states and during the dynamics of spin mixing, are faithfully revealed with our effective quantization approach. We check the validity of the effective quantization theory by performing extensive numerical comparisons with the results from full quantum many-body simulations. We study the effect of quantum coherence in our system and provide a solid theoretical basis to resolve the resolution limit in counting atoms that is needed to clearly detect quantum correlation effects in spin mixing.
