Abstract:OBJECTIVE To assess the treatment outcome and healing process of the mucosa after endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS)in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS)and to research which factors could influence the clinical outcome and epithelization. METHODS Five hundred and twenty cases with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps underwent ESS from Oct.2002 to Dec.2005 were scaled with the criteria(Chinese ENT Association,1997).The clinical outcome and epithelization of mucosa after ESS were evaluated by using Chinese ENT Association criteria. RESULTS The total cure rate was 74.4%,effective rate was 95.4 %.The mean period of epithelization after operation was 14.0 weeks.There was significant difference among different types(P<0.05).The clinical outcome and epithelization were significantly worse in patients with asthma or allergic rhinitis.The complications of ESS occurred in 73 patients(14.0 %). CONCLUSION ESS is effective in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps.The mean term of epithelization after operation is 14.0 weeks. The outcome and epithelization process are directly related to the types of the disease.Asthma and allergic rhinitis are the factors which could influence the clinical outcome and epithelization.
