Abstract:Even if we know about Chen Yingzhen for his active role in the controversy over"Country Literature,"in the discussion of the"Taiwan Complex"and"China Complex,""Cold War"mentality and national dissention some 20 years ago, even if we know about him for his work in his revisit of history for"truth"in the 1990s, and his participation in the controversy over"Hew History of Taiwan's Literature,"and in the critique of colonialist literary perspective in the new century, even if we know him as a thinker, and social critic, he still features as a stranger. The estrangement results from the change of an intellectual, who has experienced China's transition from a closed society of cultural autocracy to an open society after the revolution and class struggle. Our estrangement also comes from re-reading such a familiar but new intellectual. The new generation in Mainland China growing up in a relatively wealthy society and relaxed cultural atmosphere since the campaign of Chinese Economic Reform reads Chen Yingzhen and finds him strange because of the gap in time and space. Chen Yingzhen as a left-wing intellectual remains committed in his protest discourse against the authoritative ideology as his sense of social responsibility demands, who exposes social wrongs, and has become an intellectual of clear and critical mind in Taiwan. Awakened from the nightmare of the ultra-left trend of thought in Mainland China, people take a more flexible and open mind to the previous system of thought. The discrepancy between insistence and flexibility toward ideological changes results in the re-evaluation of Chen Yingzhen as a familiar and strange intellectual.
