Abstract:Objective:To explore the sex effects on brain structure. Methods:Normal subjects(n=60) and schizophrenic patients(n=96) were assigned into four groups:male(n=30) and female(n=30) normal subjects,male(n=48) and female(n=48) patients.Structural brain images were acquired for all subjects by magnetic resonance imaging machine, and the individual gray matter volume(GMV) images were obtained by the "unified segmentation" approach in voxel-based morphometry. The GMV difference between the male and female normal subjects and patients were examined by two-sample T-test,with age and total incranial volume introduced as covariants. Results:Compared with the female normal subjects, male normal subjects showed increased GMV in the left hemispheric middle temporal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus, right hemispheric limbic and middle temporal gyrus(P<0.001),while decreased GMV in the left caudate nucleus and right hippocampus(P<0.001).Compared with the female schizophrenic patients, male patients showed increased GMV in the bilateral inferior temporal gyrus and hippocampus, left hemispheric superior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus(P<0.001),not finding decreased GMV in the whole brain. Conclusion:Sex effects play an important role in structural brain analysis, both in normal subjects and in schizophrenic patients.
