Abstract:The present study explored how the order of worked examples and explanations influence high school students' problem-solving transfer. There was no significant difference in the immediate transfer test between the abstract-concrete and the concreteabstract orders, whereas the former produced better transfer in the delayed test. Both the instructional explanation and the prompting self-explanation were better than the spontaneous explanation in the transfer test, the prompting self-explanation being especially effective.Students preferred the abstract-concrete order and the prompting self-explanation to the other order and explanations.
