The Discourse Power in the Studies of History of Chinese Literature

Abstract:The vicissitudes in the historical development of Chinese literature may well be reduced into the struggle for discourse power,which is the most important in the study of Chinese literature. Since the Han Dynasty,the discourse power in Confucian literary theory as represented by"Mao's Preface to The Book of Songs"has got Chinese literature under its sway for more than two thousand years. But,the contemporary literary master Liang Qichao simply regards as ridiculous phenomenon that a laughable piece of writing quite unexpectedly turned to be holy and inviolable literary sutra. This ridiculousness is indeed resulted from the dominance of discourse power,and the struggle for this power has brought forth the ups and downs in the development of Chinese literature: the orthodoxy of poetry has repressed the prosperity of such literary genres as [WTBX]ci[WTBZ]-poetry,opera and novel; and the classical language has regarded itself as the orthodox literary medium,leaving the vernacular literature long been neglected. Therefore,to study Chinese literature is to examine the struggle between discourses.
