Abstract:Pectin, an acidic polysaccharide, is naturally present primarily in the cell walls and inner layers of higher plants. Pectin is extensively used in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and other industries owing to its exceptional attributes encompassing superior gelation, emulsification, antioxidant activity, stability, biocompatibility, and nontoxicity. Due to the increasing demand for pectin, there is a short supply in the domestic pectin market. Currently, the domestic production of pectin is heavily reliant on imports, thus emphasizing the urgent need to enhance its local manufacturing capabilities. Due to the diverse sources of pectin and variations in extraction and purification methods, its content, physicochemical properties, and biological activity are influenced, consequently impacting the market application of pectin. Therefore, this paper comprehensively reviews the extraction and purification process of pectin, in vivo metabolism, and biological activities (including antitumor, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects, antimicrobial properties, accelerated wound healing potential, promotion of gastrointestinal peristalsis, and alleviation of constipation as well as cholesterol-lowering effect). Furthermore, it explores the diverse applications of pectin in food science, biomedicine, and other interdisciplinary fields. This review serves as a valuable resource for enhancing the efficiency of pectin content improvement and exploring the potential value and application of pectin in a more scholarly and scientifically rigorous manner.

Abstract:Pectin is a nature plant polysaccharide, has complex structure and multifunction. As a nature high value food additive and health care product, pectin is widely used in food, medicine, health products and cosmetics. Recently, as people focus on nutrition and health as well as great progress has been made in elucidating structure/function relationships of pectin at a molecular level, this is leading to a number of researches, especially, the structure/function relationships of pectin, being carried out. This review looks to the pectin's structure, raw materials, preparation technology, physico-chemical properties and function applications, and also highlights the latest research into the trends and characteristics of pectin. Aims to providing some valuable information for the research and application of pectin in China.

Abstract:Three different extraction methods were used to extract high-temperature water-extracted pectin (HWp), high-temperature acid-extracted pectin (HAp), and high-temperature alkali-extracted pectin (HALp) from Lycium ruthenicum. The physicochemical properties, structure, and functional properties of three different pectins were studied. The results showed that HWp and HALp can extract rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) from L. ruthenicum better. Through structural feature analysis, HWp and HALp have a branched structure, and HWp has a higher degree of esterification than HAp and HALp. Zeta potential results show that HWp solution is more stable. The thermal analysis results show that the thermal stability is HALp > HAp > HWp. HWp has the highest viscosity. The inhibitory activity results showed that HWp, HAp, and HALp have a certain inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase activity. This study shows the effects of different extraction methods on the properties of L. ruthenicum pectin and aims to provide a theoretical basis for the pharmaceutical and food industries to choose more suitable pectin extraction methods.

Abstract:Pectin encompass a group of acidic heteropolysaccharides with three structural domains: homogalacturonan(HGA),rhamnogalacturonanI(RG-I) and rhamnogalacturonan II(RG-II),covalently linked to one another.The pectolytic enzymes are of great variety,the definition of which had been extended.The pectolytic enzymes can be used in textile,paper,and cosmetic industries in addition to its uses in food processing.Nowadays,their application in extraction of natural products and bioactive pectic oligosaccharides have jumped to new stages.The immobilization of pectolytic enzyme have been practiced in many ways.This short review highlights the progress on pectin and pectolytic enzymes and their application,and suggests their perspectives in application.

Abstract:Pectic substance which existed in primary cell wall and cell interval of higher plant were a group of polysaccharides.Pectinase could decompose pectic substance.Pectinase including many enzymes was wildly adopted in food industry.This paper make a detailed analysis and illustration about the patterns and properties of pectic substance as well as pectinase. On this basis, this paper specially analyzed application situations in pulp’s producing-juice and juice clarifying of pectinase preparation, and also explained some critical problems.The application prospects of pectinase were lastly summarized. In this way, it was able to provide foundations and references for the application of pectinase in food industry particularly in fruit and vegetable processing as well as fruit wine producing.

Abstract:Pectin, a heteropolysaccharide derived from plant cell walls, is essential in the food, pharmaceutical, and environmental industries. Currently, citrus and apple peels are the primary sources for commercial pectin production. The yield and quality of pectin extracted from various plant sources significantly differ based on the extraction methods employed, which include physical, chemical, and biological processes. The complex structures of pectin, composed of polygalacturonic acid and rhamnogalacturonan, influence its physicochemical properties and, consequently, its functionality. As a common polysaccharide, pectin finds applications across multiple sectors. In the food industry, it acts as a gelling agent and a packaging material; in pharmaceuticals, it is utilized for drug delivery and wound healing. Environmentally, pectin contributes to wastewater treatment by adsorbing pollutants. Current research focuses on alternative sources, sustainable extraction methods, and multifunctional applications of pectin. Ongoing studies aim to enhance extraction technologies and broaden the applications of pectin, thereby supporting sustainable development goals.

Abstract:Pectinase is a kind of compound enzyme that can degrade pectic substances. As one of the four major enzymes in the world, pectinase is widely used in fruit and vegetable juice processing, brewing and the extraction of natural products in food industry. Based on the collection of relevant information and data, this paper introduces the composition and structure of pectin. Meanwhile, the classification of pectinase and reaction mechanism, as well as the reviews the application of pectinase in processing fruit and vegetable juices, was discussed. In addition, existing problems and future research directions in domestic production of the pectinase were put forward to provide a reference for future research and practice.

Abstract:Pectins are complex polysaccharides that are widely found in plant cells and have a variety of bioactivities. However, the high molecular weights (Mw) and complex structures of natural pectins mean that they are difficult for organisms to absorb and utilize, limiting their beneficial effects. The modification of pectins is considered to be an effective method for improving the structural characteristics and promoting the bioactivities of pectins, and even adding new bioactivities to natural pectins. This article reviews the modification methods, including chemical, physical, and enzymatic methods, for natural pectins from the perspective of their basic information, influencing factors, and product identification. Furthermore, the changes caused by modifications to the bioactivities of pectins are elucidated, including their anti-coagulant, anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, and anti-bacterial activities and the ability to regulate the intestinal environment. Finally, suggestions and perspectives regarding the development of pectin modification are provided.

Abstract:Pectin is a branched macromolecule with high molecular weight,ater. Pectin,due to its simple and cytocompatible gelling mechanism,has been recently exploited for different biomedical applications including drug delivery,gene delivery,wound healing and tissue engineering. Pectin sources and extraction methodologies are reviewed,in view of the final properties determining the gelling mechanisms and the possible biomedical applications. Pectin structure, sources and extraction procedures have been discussed focussing on the properties of the polysaccharide that can be tuned to optimize the gels for a desired application and possess a fundamental role in application of pectin in the biomedical field.

Abstract:The pectin ,which is a main active ingredients of apple's pomace.The technology of preparing the low methoxyl pectin (LMP) from high methoxyl apple pectin (HMP) with basification method was studied.The influential factors such as pH,the temperature and the reaction time were studied through single factor experiments. At last,we get the optimum conditions were pH=9.0,T(temperature)=36 ℃ and t(reaction time) =90 min through L9(33) orthogonal experiments.

Abstract:Background: Pectin is a natural hetero-polysaccharide found in some fruits and vegetables with good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Besides the inherent functions of pectin in plants and its normal applications as gelling and thickening agents in food industry, pectin-based nanomaterials have attracted great attention owing to their unique properties such as the high specific surface area compared to the bulk pectin. Pectin-based nanomaterials combine the advantages of both pectin and the nanoscaled particles so that they show great potential in some other fields. Methods: Recent advance of pectin-based nanomaterials is reviewed including their synthesis strategies and applications. Results: At present, common methods based on nanoemulsion technique, ionotropic gelation, redox reactions and so on have been reported for the synthesis of pectin nanomaterials and pectin stabilized/capped nanomaterials. And these pectin-based nanomaterials can be used as gene/drug delivery system, antimicrobial agents and adsorbents for metal ions and dyes in wastewater treatment. Conclusion: The variety of nanoparticles is increasing and their applications are wider, so there are still more possibilities for us to investigate the pectin-based nanomaterials including the synthesis methods and applications in other fields. For example, the synthesis of fluorescent pectin-based nanoparticles and their applications in sensing and bioimaging. Using the advantages of both pectin and nanomaterials, we hope more pectin-based nanomaterials can be designed and synthesized and further applied in desired areas.

Abstract:Pectin is a heterogeneous hydrocolloid present in the primary cell wall and middle lamella in all dicotyledonous plants, more commonly in the outer fruit coat or peel as compared to the inner matrix. Presently, citrus fruits and apple fruits are the main sources for commercial extraction of pectin, but ongoing research on pectin extraction from alternate fruit sources and fruit wastes from processing industries will be of great help in waste product reduction and enhancing the production of pectin. Pectin shows multifunctional applications including in the food industry, the health and pharmaceutical sector, and in packaging regimes. Pectin is commonly utilized in the food industry as an additive in foods such as jams, jellies, low calorie foods, stabilizing acidified milk products, thickener and emulsifier. Pectin is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of medicines that reduce blood cholesterol level and cure gastrointestinal disorders, as well as in cancer treatment. Pectin also finds use in numerous other industries, such as in the preparation of edible films and coatings, paper substitutes and foams. Due to these varied uses of pectin in different applications, there is a great necessity to explore other non-conventional sources or modify existing sources to obtain pectin with desired quality attributes to some extent by rational modifications of pectin with chemical and enzymatic treatments.
