Abstract:Two-digit numerals were compared with 65 numerals both in Arabic and Chinese forms.Combining stimulus-locked averaging with latency shifting and response-locked averaging, the ERP recording revealed the relationship between notation and magnitude processing.Notation processing was reflected by a first negativity(N1) which was different in Arabic digits and Chinese digits. The distance effect was characterized by the decreasing reaction times with the increase of the numerical distance between the target number and the standard 65 and the voltage varied along the distance. There was no interaction between the effects of notation and distance. However,a notation effect still existed when the distance effect appeared. This suggested that there was some difference in the magnitude representations because of symbol difference.
