Abstract:Heavy metal pollution may lead to changes in soil microbial biomass, microbial community structure and functioning activity in soil. The topsoil samples both from a unpolluted rice p[addy and a polluted paddy soil in adjacent to a metal smelter were collected from a county in the southern Jiangsu,China. Soil microbial biomass carbon was measured by the conventional fumigation procedure and microbial community structure analyzed by PLFA. The results showed that soil microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen and the microbial biomass quotient(Cmic/Corg) was decreased very significantly(by about 20%) . However,a remarkable reduction(30%) in the total extractable PLFAs and an intense decline of the ratio of fungi to bacteria of PLFAs was observed in the polluted soil compared to the non-polluted counterpart. This is in disagreement with the general understanding of either an increase or insignificant change under heavy metal pollution. Such microbial community change would,in turn, modify the C and N cycling in paddy soils under heavy metal pollution, which deserves further study.
