Abstract:Several relativistic quantum gravitational effects such as spin-rotation coupling, gravitomagnetic charge and gravitational Meissner effect are investigated in the present letter. The field equation of gravitomagnetic matter is suggested and a static spherically symmetric solution of this equation is offered. With foreseeable improvements in detecting and measuring technology, it is possible for us to investigate quantum mechanics in weak-gravitational fields. The potential implications of these gravitational effects (or phenomena) to some problems are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The Weak Gravity Conjecture holds that in a theory of quantum gravity, any gauge force must mediate interactions stronger than gravity for some particles. This statement has surprisingly deep and extensive connections to many different areas of physics and mathematics. Several variations on the basic conjecture have been proposed, including statements that are much stronger but are nonetheless satisfied by all known consistent quantum gravity theories. We review these related conjectures and the evidence for their validity in the string theory landscape. We also review a variety of arguments for these conjectures, which tend to fall into two categories: qualitative arguments which claim the conjecture is plausible based on general principles, and quantitative arguments for various special cases or analogues of the conjecture. We also outline the implications of these conjectures for particle physics, cosmology, general relativity, and mathematics. Finally, we highlight important directions for future research.

Abstract:Interplays between quantum physics and gravity have long inspired exciting studies, which reveal subtle connections between quantum laws and the general notion of curved spacetime. One important example is the uniqueness of free-falling motions in both quantum and gravitational physics. In this work, we re-investigate the free-falling motions of quantum test wave packets that are distributed over weakly curved spacetime backgrounds. Except for the de Broglie relations, no assumption of priori given Hamiltonians or least actions satisfied by the quantum system is made. We find that the mean motions of quantum test wave packets can be deduced naturally from the de Broglie relations with a generalized treatment of gravitational time dilations in quantum waves. Such mean motions of quantum test masses in gravitational field are independent of their masses and compositions, and restore exactly the free-falling or geodesic motions of classical test masses in curved spacetime. This suggests a novel perspective that weak equivalence principle, which states the universality of free-fall, may be deeply rooted in quantum physics and be a phenomenon that has emerged from the quantum world.

Abstract:We present a spin-induced none-geodesic effect of Dirac wave packets in a static uniform gravitational field. Our approach is based on the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of Dirac equation in a curved spacetime, which predicts the gravitational spin-orbit coupling. Due to this coupling, we find that the dynamics of the free-fall Dirac wave packets with opposite spin polarization will yield the transverse splitting in the direction perpendicular to spin orientation and gravity, which is known as the gravitational spin Hall effect. Even in a static uniform gravitational field, such effect suggests that the weak equivalence principle is violated for quantum particles.

Abstract:Effects of massive object's spin on massive-massless 2 → 2 classical scattering is studied. Focus is set on the less-considered dimensionless expansion parameter λ/b , where λ is the massless particle's wavelength and b is the impact parameter. Corrections in λ/b start to appear from ( G 2 ), with leading correction terms tied to the gravitational Faraday effect, which is a special case of the Lense-Thirring effect. We compute the eikonal phase up to ( G 2 ) and extract spin effect on the scattering angle and time delay up to 14th order in spin. The gravitational Faraday effect at linear order in spin [1] is reproduced by λ/b correction terms, which we compute to higher orders in spin. We find that the equivalence principle, or universality, holds up to NLO for general spinning bodies, i.e. away from geometric optics limit. Furthermore, in the black hole limit, we confirm the absence of particular spin structure observed [2,3,4,5,6,7,8], along with the associated shift symmetry [7], and argue that it holds to arbitrary spin order at ( G 2 ) in the massless probe limit.

Finite-distance gravitational deflection of massive particles by a rotating black hole in loop quantum gravity

Abstract:A rotating black hole in loop quantum gravity was constructed by Brahma, Chen, and Yeom based on a nonrotating counterpart using the revised Newman-Janis algorithm recently. For such spacetime, we investigate the weak gravitational deflection of massive particles to explore observational effects of the quantum correction. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, for Gibbons-Werner (GW) method, a geometric approach computing the deflection angle of particles in curved spacetimes, we refine its calculation and obtain a simplified formula. Second, by using GW method and our new formula, we work out the finite-distance weak deflection angle of massive particles for the rotating black hole in loop quantum gravity obtained by Brahma $et\ al.$ An analysis to our result reveals the repulsive effect of the quantum correction to particles. What's more, an observational constraint on the quantum parameter is obtained in solar system.

Abstract:A hierarchy of equations for equilibrium reduced density matrices obtained earlier is used to consider systems of spinless bosons bound by forces of gravity alone. The systems are assumed to be at absolute zero of temperature under conditions of Bose condensation. In this case, a peculiar interplay of quantum effects and of very weak gravitational interaction between microparticles occurs. As a result, there can form spatially-bounded equilibrium structures macroscopic in size, both immobile and rotating. The size of a structure is inversely related to the number of particles in the structure. When the number of particles is relatively small the size can be enormous, whereas if this numbder equals Avogadro's number the radius of the structure is about 30 cm in the case that the structure consists of hydrogen atoms. The rotating objects have the form of rings and exhibit superfluidity. An atmosphere that can be captured by tiny celestial bodies from the ambient medium is considered too. The thickness of the atmosphere decreases as its mass increases. If short-range intermolecular forces are taken into account, the results obtained hold for excited states whose lifetime can however be very long. The results of the paper can be utilized for explaining the first stage of formation of celestial bodies from interstellar and even intergalactic gases.

Abstract:Considerable attention has been focused on Verlinde's recent work, claiming that Newton's gravity is not a fundamental force. In a recent work (arXiv:1012.5858), we give further the logic basis and basic clues to derive the Newton's gravity, inertia law and Einstein's weak equivalence principle. In this work, we show that if the gravity is not a fundamental force, in special case, it could be repulsive when quantum wavepacket effect is considered. This quantum gravity effect leads to several physical effects: (1) It is consistent with the universe with accelerating expansion, if the gravity and quantum effect of the fluctuating 'vacuum' (dark energy) is considered. The role of the cosmological constant is naturally interpreted when the gravity and quantum effect of the whole 'vacuum' background is considered. (2) It leads to new idea about black hole information paradox, no-hair theorem and Hawking radiation. (3) With a sphere full of superfluid Helium, we propose a feasible experimental scheme to test our idea with an atom interferometer placed in the sphere. Our calculations show that the accuracy Delta g/g below 10^(-8) could be used to test our idea, which satisfies the present experimental technique of atom interferometer.

Abstract:We explore the new physics phenomena of gravidynamics governed by the inhomogeneous spin gauge symmetry based on the gravitational quantum field theory. Such a gravidynamics enables us to derive the generalized Einstein equation and an equation beyond it. To simplify the analyses, we linearize the dynamic equations of gravitational interaction by keeping terms up to the leading order in the dual gravigauge field. We then apply the linearized dynamic equations into two particular gravitational phenomena. First, we consider the linearized equations in the absence of source fields, which is shown to have five physical propagating polarizations as gravitational waves, i.e., two tensor modes, two vector modes, and one scalar, instead of two tensor polarizations in the general relativity. Second, we examine the Newtonian limit in which the gravitational fields and the matter source distribution are weak and static. By deriving the associated Poisson equation, we obtain the exact relation of the fundamental interaction coupling in the gravidynamics with the experimentally measured Newtonian constant. We also make use of nonrelativistic objects and relativistic photons to probe the Newtonian field configurations. In particular, the experiments from the gravitational deflection of light rays and the Shapiro time delay can place stringent constraints on the linearized gravidynamics in the gravitational quantum field theory.

Abstract:We present a novel fundamental effect that for the matter waves the space-averaging free-fall point of quantum particles undergoes a spin-dependent transverse shift in the gravitational field of Earth. This effect is similar to the geometric spin Hall effect (GSHE) [Aiello et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 100401 (2009)] and can be called gravity-induced GSHE. This effect suggests that there might be violations of the universality of free fall (UFF) or weak equivalence principle (WEP) in the quantum domain.

Abstract:The spin-torsion theory is a gauge theory approach to gravity that expands upon Einstein's general relativity (GR) by incorporating the spin of microparticles. In this study, we further develop the spin-torsion theory to examine spherically symmetric and static gravitational systems that involve free-falling macroscopic particles. We posit that the quantum spin of macroscopic matter becomes noteworthy at cosmic scales. We further assume that the Dirac spinor and Dirac equation adequately capture all essential physical characteristics of the particles and their associated processes. A crucial aspect of our approach involves substituting the constant mass in the Dirac equation with a scale function, allowing us to establish a connection between quantum effects and the scale of gravitational systems. This mechanism ensures that the quantum effect of macroscopic matter is scale-dependent and diminishes locally, a phenomenon not observed in microparticles. For any given matter density distribution, our theory predicts an additional quantum term, the quantum potential energy (QPE), within the mass expression. The QPE induces time dilation and distance contraction, and thus mimics a gravitational well. When applied to cosmology, the QPE serves as a counterpart to the cosmological constant introduced by Einstein to balance gravity in his static cosmological model. The QPE also offers a plausible explanation for the origin of Hubble redshift (traditionally attributed to the universe's expansion). The predicted luminosity distance--redshift relation aligns remarkably well with SNe Ia data from the cosmological sample of SNe Ia. In the context of galaxies, the QPE functions as the equivalent of dark matter. The predicted circular velocities align well with rotation curve data from the SPARC (Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves database) sample.

Abstract:We investigate possible quantum gravity (QG) effects on the gravitational deflection of light. Two forms of deformation of the Schwarzschild spacetime are proposed. The first ansatz is a given Finslerian line element, it could be regarded as a weak QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. Starting from this ansatz, we deduce the deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source. The second ansatz could be regarded as a strong QG effect on the Schwarzschild spacetime. The deflection angle of the light ray which passes a weak gravitational source is deduced in this Riemannian spacetime. This QG effect may distinguish the mixed light rays in the absence of gravitational source by a "spectroscope" (the gravitational source). The solutions of gravitational field equation in this Riemannian spacetime indicate that the QG effect could be regarded as the vacuum energy and the energy density of vacuum is related to the spacetime deformation parameter.

Quantum Gravity Effects on Fermionic Dark Matter and Gravitational Waves

Abstract:We explore the phenomenological consequences of breaking discrete global symmetries in quantum gravity (QG). We extend a previous scenario where discrete global symmetries are responsible for scalar dark matter (DM) and domain walls (DWs), to the case of fermionic DM, considered as a feebly interacting massive particle, which achieves the correct DM relic density via the freeze-in mechanism. Due to the mixing between DM and the standard model neutrinos, various indirect DM detection methods can be employed to constrain the QG scale, the scale of freeze-in, and the reheating temperature simultaneously. Since such QG symmetry breaking leads to DW annihilation, this may generate the characteristic gravitational wave background, and hence explain the recent observations of the gravitational wave spectrum by pulsar timing arrays. This work therefore highlights a tantalizing possibility of probing the effective scale of QG from observations.

Gravitational partial-wave absorption from scattering amplitudes

Abstract:We study gravitational absorption effects using effective on-shell scattering amplitudes. We develop an in-in probability-based framework involving plane- and partial-wave coherent states for the incoming wave to describe the interaction of the wave with a black hole or another compact object. We connect this framework to a simplified single-quantum analysis. The basic ingredients are mass-changing three-point amplitudes, which model the leading absorption effects and a spectral-density function of the black hole. As an application, we consider a non-spinning black hole that may start spinning as a consequence of the dynamics. The corresponding amplitudes are found to correspond to covariant spin-weighted spherical harmonics, the properties of which we formulate and make use of. We perform a matching calculation to general-relativity results at the cross-section level and derive the effective absorptive three-point couplings. They are found to behave as ${\cal O}(G_\text{Newton}^{s+1})$, where $s$ is the spin of the outgoing massive state.

Abstract:The gravitational couplings of intrinsic spin are briefly reviewed. A consequence of the Dirac equation in the exterior gravitational field of a rotating mass is considered in detail, namely, the difference in the energy of a spin-1/2 particle polarized vertically up and down near the surface of a rotating body is $\hbar\Omega\sin\theta$. Here $\theta$ is the latitude and $\Omega = 2GJ/(c^2 R^3)$, where $J$ and $R$ are, respectively, the angular momentum and radius of the body. It seems that this relativistic quantum gravitational effect could be measurable in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:Spin is one fundamental property of microscopic particles. A lot of theoretical work has postulated the possible coupling between spin and gravitation, which could result in the violation of equivalence principle. In our recent joint mass-and-energy test of the weak equivalence principle with a 10-meter $^{85}$Rb-$^{87}$Rb dual-species atom interferometer, the E${\rm \ddot{o}}$tv${\rm \ddot{o}}$s parameters of four $^{85}$Rb-$^{87}$Rb combinations with specific atomic spin states were measured to the $10^{-10}$-level (\textit{L. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. A 104, 022822}). Here these experimental results are used to constrain the postulated spin-gravity coupling effects. The bounds on the spin-independent and spin-dependent anomalous passive gravitational mass tensors in L${\rm \ddot{a}}$mmerzahl's model are set to the $10^{-10}$-level, which improves existing bounds by three orders of magnitude. The constraints to the spin-independent electron- and proton-gravity coupling parameters in the gravitational standard-model extension are set to the $10^{-6}\, {\rm GeV}$-level.
