Abstract:We observed that the reaction kinetics of methylene coupling on Ag(111) is affected by co-adsorbates (surface iodine and CH2I2). We believe that it is the migration and/or assembly of methylene on the surface, not the actual methylene coupling reaction, which is influenced by the co-adsorbates.

Abstract:The electrolyte effect has been key to the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and has received extensive attention in recent years. Here we combined atomic force microscopy, quasi-in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) to study the effect of iodine anions on Cu-catalyzed CO2RR in the absence or presence of KI in the KHCO3 solution. Our results suggested that iodine adsorption caused coarsening of the Cu surface and altered its intrinsic activity for CO2RR. As the potential of the Cu catalyst became more negative, there was an increase in surface iodine anion concentration ([I-]), which could be connected to the reaction-enhanced adsorption of I- ions accompanying the increase in CO2RR activity. A linear relationship was observed between [I-] and current density. SEIRAS results further suggested that the presence of KI in the electrolyte strengthened the Cu-CO bond and facilitated the hydrogenation process, enhancing the production of CH4. Our results have thus provided insight into the role of halogen anions and aided in the design of an efficient CO2RR process.
Influence of an Adsorption Layer and Its Evolvement on the Formation of Ag.

Abstract:The formation mechanism of Ag in an adsorption layer and the influence of temperature on the generation of Ag particles were studied. Two reaction systems were designed to explore the different reduction mechanisms of Ag+ in an adsorption layer and in bulk. A UV-vis adsorption spectrometer was employed to monitor the reaction process of Ag+ in two reaction systems. The results indicated that the formation mechanism of silver in an adsorption layer was largely different from that in alcohol bulk, which led to various morphologies of Ag particles in the two systems. Temperature experiments suggested that the induction time and morphology of Ag particles both changed greatly when temperature increased to 40 degrees C. The disappearance of physical-adsorption and the reaction occurring in alcohol bulk was the primary cause.
Effects of Iodine and Oxygen Modification on the Adsorption of Methanol on the Ag(110) Surface - A Density-Functional Theory Approach

Abstract:The effects of iodine and oxygen modification on the adsorption of methanol on the Ag(110) surface were studied by density - functional theory (DFT) method using cluster model approximation. It is found that methanol was weakly adsorbed in the form of physisorption on a clean silver surface. However, after the surface was modified by oxygen or iodine, methanol can undergo a stable form of molecular chemisorption because the pre - adsorption of iodine and oxygen increases the adsorption energy of methanol. And image charge model was used to verify our deduction that charge modification is the essence of modification of iodine and oxygen on the surface of silver catalyst in partial oxidation reaction of methanol to formaldehyde. This may help with the selection of promoter for this kind of reaction.

Abstract:Density functional theory calculation was performed to study the adsorption and reaction of CH2I2 on Ag(111). Thermodynamically favorable reactions of CH2I2 on Ag(111) are C-I bond ruptures and CH2 coupling to form ethylene. The energy barriers for the C-I bond ruptures of chemisorbed CH2I2 on Ag(111) are 0.43-0.48 eV, whereas the activation energy for the C-H bond rupture of chemisorbed CH2 on Ag(111) is 1.76 eV. The coupling reaction barrier of neighboring chemisorbed CH2 to form C2H4 on Ag(111) was much less than those of the C-I bond ruptures of CH2I2(a) and the migration of chemisorbed CH2 on Ag(111). Unravelling the Mechanism of Glaser Coupling Reaction on Ag(111) and Cu(111) Surfaces: a Case for Halogen Substituted Terminal Alkyne

Abstract:The mechanisms of Glaser coupling reaction on metal surfaces have been poorly understood. Herein, we propose a reaction pathway toward surface-confined Glaser coupling which is initiated by single-molecule dehydrogenation of terminal alkyne. This is inspired by our experimental observations of alkynyl-Ag-alkynyl and alkynyl-Cu-alkynyl type organometallic intermediates in the coupling reaction of 1,1'-biphenyl,4-bromo-4'-ethynyl (BPBE) on Ag(111) and Cu(111), respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that the dehydrogenation process of terminal ethynyl of BPBE is most likely catalyzed by a stray H adatom on Ag(111) but by a Cu adatom on Cu(111), followed by the formation of the organometallic intermediates. After the release of interstitial metal adatoms, the final C-C coupling occurs easily on Ag(111) but shows extremely low efficiency on Cu(111), due to the too strong interaction between ethynylene and the Cu(111) substrate.
The O, OH and OOH-assisted selective coupling of methanol on Au-Ag(111).

Abstract:Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we performed a thorough theoretical investigation on the catalytic mechanism of oxidative self-coupling of methanol with molecular oxygen on Au-Ag catalysts. It is found that molecular oxygen can be activated via a hydroperoxyl (OOH) intermediate by taking a hydrogen atom from co-adsorbed methanol with an energy barrier of 0.51 eV, which is actually the rate determining step for the overall reaction. The O, OH and OOH oxidant formation proceeds via two channels of I and II with low barriers. We demonstrated that the oxidative coupling of methanol by OOH, atomic oxygen, and hydroxyl is much more favorable than the total oxidation of methanol, and is responsible for the high selectivity of Au-Ag catalysts in methanol oxidation. The revealed activation mechanism provides an efficient pathway for optimizing the selective coupling of methanol with dioxygen.
The Adsorption and Decomposition of Methane on Fe/Cu(110) Bimetallic Surface

Abstract:> The adsorption and decomposition of methane on Fe/Cu(110) bimetallic surface have been studied by HREELS and ARUPS. The results show that the activation energy of dissociative chemisorption for methane is reduced obviously by preadsorption of iron on copper surface. The chemisorption probability of methane is so high on Fe/Cu(110) bimetallic surface that chemisorption of methane can be observed at room temperature and low pressure. When the iron coverage is lower than 1 ML, the chemisorption probability increases linearly with increasing iron coverage. After the iron coverage is beyond 1 ML(<2ML) the probability continues increasing. The iron atom with disordered structure can offer the site of dissociative chemisorption to methane too. A hydroformyl species is formed through interaction between methane and the preadsorbed oxygen atoms. The reaction enhances the dissociative chemisorption of methane on the surface.

Abstract:The adsorption of iodine atom (I) on Ag(110) surface modeled by two-layer Agm+n(m,n) clusters has been studied by means of B3-LYP density-functional method. The effects of basis set and cluster size were tested. It is found that the adsorption properties are less sensitive to geometry than to basis set. The adsorption energy of I is found to converge after the coordination number of the Ag atoms forming the adsorption sites reaches its maximum. This determination allows us to extrapolate the adsorption properties of the iodine/Ag(110) surface from those of iodine/silver clusters. As a result, Ag-16(8,8) and Ag-21(12,9) are chosen to model four possible adsorption sites (long and short bridges, hollow and top) of Ag(110). The results show that the short bridge site is the most preferred for iodine adsorption, followed by top, hollow and long bridge sites. The present results about the effect of the adsorption of I atom on Ag(110) surface also provide a sound theoretical basis for the understanding of the role of I in heterogeneous catalysis. CO Adsorption on the O-saturated Ag/Pt(110) Composite Surface: Direct Observation of the Diffusion of Adsorbed CO from Strongly Bound Pt Sites to Weakly Bound Ag Sites

Abstract:In our work, photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) was employed to real-time and in situ study CO adsorption on the O-saturated Ag/Pt(110) composite surface. Coupling occurred between adjacent surfaces with different activities for CO + Oad reaction, in which adsorbed CO was directly observed to migrate from strongly bound Pt sites to weakly bound Ag sites in the form of reaction−diffusion wave. Our results imply that surface species may migrate not only from weakly bound sites to strongly bound sites (enthalpy favorable process) but also from strongly bound sites to weakly bound sites (enthalpy unfavorable process) during heterogeneous catalysis reactions.

Abstract:The adsorption of acetylene molecules on the ordered NixAg1-x/Ni (111) (x = 1, 0.75, 0.5, 0.25) bimetallic surfaces was investigated by using the density functional theory (DFT). Among the model systems, Ni atom was replaced by Ag atom only on the top surface layer. The results show that, as the Ag concentration increases, the interaction between Ag-modified NixAg1-x/Ni (111) and acetylene molecules decreases gradually. Additionally, the adsorption processes of acetylene molecules on different considered surfaces are all exothermic thermodynamically. Furthermore, the Partial density states (PDOS) and the differential charge density properties suggest that an increase in atomic concentration of Ag in the upmost layer decreases the electron transfer between the acetylene molecule and surface. Our results could provide useful information to increase the activity of Ni-based catalysts for acetylene hydrogenation. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The reaction mechanism of CO coupling to dimethyl oxalate over Pd/α-Al2O3 was studied by in situ FT-IR spectroscopy.The adsorption of two reactants, CO and methyl nitrite,on the catalyst was observed.Methyl nitrite can easily catalytically dissociate into methanol,formaldehyde,and methyl formate.By changing the addition sequence of the two reactants into the in situ reactor,the process of the coupling reaction was clearly observed.The results show that bridged adsorbed CO reacts with free methyl nitrite gas,and the key step of the whole reaction is the CO adsorption.

Abstract:Surface-assisted Ullmann coupling was widely applied to construct various molecular nanostructures on surfaces due to its reliability and controllability. By using 4,4''-dichloro-1,1':3',1''-terphenyl (DCTP) as the precursor, covalently bonded zig-zag oligophenylene chains and hexagonal hyperbenzene rings, e. g., [18]-honeycombenes, were successfully fabricated on Ag(111) via dechlorinated Ullmann coupling reaction. Stepwise annealing was applied to investigate the reaction process in detail. Scanning tunneling microscopy and synchrotron X-ray photoemission spectroscopy were utilized to explore the thermal evolution of the DCTP molecules on Ag(111) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, evidencing the existence of intact DCTP molecules, chemisorbed Cl atoms, covalently bonded DCTP dimers as well as organometallic C-Ag-C-containing intermediates. These results may help understand dechlorinated Ullmann coupling reaction of aryl chlorides on metal surfaces.

Abstract:The effects of two kinds of surface modifications (chemisorption and electrochemical modification) on the adsorption of methanol and atomic oxygen on Ag(110) surface have been investigated using B3-LYP method with cluster models. The promotion effect of halogen atoms was found to be mainly electrochemical. Both modifications, either by chemisorption of halogen atoms or by the presence of −q/+q point charges, increase the work function of the Ag(110) surface. Strong correlation between the adsorption energy of methanol, as well as atomic oxygen and the work function change induced by the two kinds of modifications has been found.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculation has been performed to study the adsorption and dissociation of CH2I2 on Ag(111) surface at different coverages. CH2I2(a) with two iodine atoms bonded to Ag(111) is the main stable adsorbed species at low coverage, while CH2I2(a) with one iodine atom bonded to Ag(111) will dominate on the surface at high coverage. The dissociation barriers of CH2I2 to generate CH2(a) species on Ag(111) also increase with the increase of coverage. Cobalt Phthalocyanine Molecules Adsorbed on Ag(111): Examination of Interfacial Interactions

Abstract:The modification of interfacial properties by adsorbates is a fundamental aspect in catalysis and molecular electronics. As a model system for metal/organic interfaces, we studied the adsorption of Co(II)-phthalocyanine (CoPc) on Ag(111). In general, metallophthalocyanines form well ordered layers on metallic substrates. To obtain a deeper insight into the CoPc/Ag interaction, we examined submonolayers, monolayers, and multilayers of CoPc with photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS/UPS) and low-energy ion scattering (LEIS). Up to one monolayer, the adsorption of CoPc induces two new electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi edge and a negative work-function shift. XPS shows a strong modification of the Co 2p{sub 3/2} and 2p{sub 1/2} core level states due to the CoPc-Ag(111) interaction. These levels exhibit a binding energy 2 eV lower than in molecules without a direct contact to the metal interface. This finding can be interpreted by a charge transfer from the Ag(111) substrate into the molecules. Furthermore, the binding energy differences between the 2p{sub 1/2} and 2p{sub 3/2} levels are altered by the contact to the single crystal surface. This observation suggests a change in the electronic state of the central Co ion.
Unravelling CO adsorption on model single-atom catalysts

Abstract:Understanding how the local environment of a single-atom catalyst affects stability and reactivity remains a significant challenge. We present an in-depth study of Cu1, Ag1, Au1, Ni1, Pd1, Pt1, Rh1, and Ir1 species on Fe3O4(001); a model support where all metals occupy the same 2-fold coordinated adsorption site upon deposition at room temperature. Surface science techniques revealed that CO adsorption strength at single metal sites differs from the respective metal surfaces and supported clusters. Charge transfer into the support modifies the d-states of the metal atom and the strength of the metal-CO bond. These effects could strengthen the bond (as for Ag1-CO) or weaken it (as for Ni1-CO), but CO-induced structural distortions reduce adsorption energies from those expected based on electronic structure alone. The extent of the relaxations depends on the local geometry and could be predicted by analogy to coordination chemistry.

Role of Coadsorbates in Shaping the Reaction Pathways of Alkyl Fragments on Co Surfaces

Abstract:Understanding the elementary surface reaction network of the Co-catalyzed F-T synthesis (FTS) reaction is of great interest. In this Article, we have studied the surface reactions of CHx(a) prepared by CH3I dissociation on clean and on H(a) and CO(a) precovered Co(0001) surfaces using thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). CH3I and CHx(a) species exhibit a vacant surface sites-dependent decomposition behavior on the Co(0001) surface. The CH3(a) and CH(a) fragments are dominant CHx fragments upon CH3I dissociation on Co(0001) at 100 K. Upon heating, the CH3(a) species undergoes the hydrogenation reaction to CH4, the self-coupling reaction to C2H6, and the decomposition reaction to CH(a), while the CH(a) species undergoes the hydrogenation reaction to CH4, the dehydrocyclization reaction to graphitic carbon, and the decomposition reaction to atomic carbon. The coadsorbed H(a) species on Co(0001) does not affect the speciation of CHx fragments formed by CH3I dissociation at 100 K and greatly enhances the hydrogenation reaction probability of both CH3(a) and CH(a) species at the expense of decomposition reaction probability. The coadsorbed CO(a) species on Co(0001) stabilizes the CH2(a) species that undergoes the hydrogenation reaction to CH4 and the insertion reaction to CH3CH2(a) followed by H elimination and the hydrogenation reaction, respectively, to C2H4 and C2H6. The methanation reactivity of various CHx(a) fragments follows an order of CH3(a) > CH2(a) > CH(a). These results establish the elementary surface reaction networks of CHx(a) fragments on Co(0001) and reveal the shaping effect of coadsorbed H(a) and CO(a) on the reaction pathways of CHx(a) fragments, which greatly broaden the fundamental understanding of the complex Co-catalyzed FTS reaction.
Surface Chemistry of CH2I2 on Clean, Hydrogen- and Carbon Monoxide-Covered Co(0001) Surfaces

Abstract:Fundamental understanding of complex FT synthesis is of great interest. We have employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption to comparatively investigate CH2I2 adsorption and reactions on clean, hydrogen- and CO-covered Co(0001) surfaces. Surface chemistry of CH2I2 was demonstrated to sensitively depend on available vacant surface sites on Co(0001). Upon adsorption on clean Co(0001) surface at 110 K, CH2I2 undergoes stepwise decomposition reactions to produce carbon adatoms, CH(a) and CH2(a) species at small coverages, and chemisorbs both dissociatively and molecularly at large coverages. Upon heating, CH2(a) species facilely undergoes surface reactions to produce CH, C3H6, and C2H4 in gas phase and CH(a) species on the surface at low temperatures. CH(a) species undergoes surface reactions to produce CH4 in gas phase and C2H2(a) species on the surface at higher temperatures, and both CH(a) and C2H2(a) species undergo further surface reactions to produce H-2 in gas phase and carbon species on the surface. Coadsorbed H adatoms and CO molecules were found to strongly affect surface chemistry of CH2I2 and the resulting CH species on Co(0001) via suppressing the decomposition reactions and promoting the carbon carbon bond coupling reactions. These results add novel insights in fundamental understanding of complex FT synthesis.
Effect of Ag on the control of Ni-catalyzed carbon formation: A density functional theory study

Abstract:First-principles calculations have been performed to examine the effect of doped Ag on the kinetics of Ni-catalyzed methane dissociation and coke formation. The close-packed Ag/Ni(111) and stepped Ag/Ni(211) surfaces as well as the defect facets with step sites blocked by Ag or C atoms are constructed to investigate the role of the coordinatively unsaturated sites in the catalytic performance of Ni nanoparticles. The most stable CHx (x=0–4) adsorption configurations and transition states for methane dissociation have been identified on both Ni and Ag/Ni surfaces. The calculated results indicate that the activation energy for methane dissociation is increased with the Ag coverage on Ni(111), and the C atoms deposited on the catalyst surface can be readily separated into small islands by Ag. On Ni(211) Ag atoms are predicted to bind preferentially to the middle-step sites which act as the nucleation center for the growth of filamentous carbon and therefore have the potential to prevent catalyst particles from being destroyed. Meanwhile, as the energy barrier for methane dissociation on the Ag-blocked Ni(211) surface is even higher than that on pure Ni(111), the active center is transferred from the stepped surface to the close-packed surface. These findings provide a rational interpretation of the experimental observations that Ag/Ni catalyst exhibits lower catalytic activity towards steam methane reforming but high resistance to coke deposition.
A Single-Molecule-level Mechanistic Study of Pd-catalyzed and Cu-catalyzed Homocoupling of Aryl Bromide on an Au(111) Surface.

Abstract:On-surface Pd- and Cu-catalyzed CC coupling reactions between phenyl bromide functionalized porphyrin derivatives on an Au(111) surface have been investigated under ultra-high vacuum conditions by using scanning tunneling microscopy and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We monitored the isothermal reaction kinetics by allowing the reaction to proceed at different temperatures. We discovered that the reactions catalyzed by Pd or Cu can be described as a two-phase process that involves an initial activation followed by CC bond formation. However, the distinctive reaction kinetics and the CC bond-formation yield associated with the two catalysts account for the different reaction mechanisms: the initial activation phase is the rate-limiting step for the Cu-catalyzed reaction at all temperatures tested, whereas the later phase of CC formation is the rate-limiting step for the Pd-catalyzed reaction at high temperature. Analysis of rate constants of the Pd-catalyzed reactions allowed us to determine its activation energy as (0.41 +/- 0.03)eV.
