Abstract:Preparation methods for TiO2/PbS ''coupled'' type nanoparticles are described, in which PbS is formed in-situ on the surface of TiO2. FTIR was used to follow the preparation process and UV-vis spectra confirmed the stabilizing effect of TiO2 on the formation of PbS nanoparticles. This ''coupled'' type of nanoparticle was further assembled into ultrathin composite films based on electrostatic interaction as the driving force. Various methods, including UV-vis, IR, EDS, TEM, AFM, and XBS, identified the coexistence of two kinds of nanoparticles in ultrathin composite films. Photocurrent measurements indicated that efficient charge transfer occurred in the composite films.

Abstract:A novel translucent TiO2 porous film was prepared through etched method. The CdS, PbS and CdS/PbS nanoclusters were imbedded on TiO2 porous film by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Microstructure, morphology, optical and photoelectron-chemical properties of the as-synthesized thin films were investigated systematically. XRD and morphology analysis showed that PbS or CdS nanoclusters have been attached to the TiO2 porous films. It was found that the energy band gap of TiO2 porous film decreased from 3.46 to 3.2 eV after sensitized with nanoclusters. The photocurrent density of ITO/TiO2 photoelectrode increased from 0.017 to 0.28 mA/cm2 after co-sensitized with CdS and PbS nanoclusters. Besides, the photoelectrode sensitized with two sorts of nanoclusters showed evident higher photocurrent density than which sensitized just one sort of nanoclusters. The photocurrent density of ITO/TiO2/PbS and TO/TiO2/CdS photoelectrode was 0.11 mA/cm2 and 0.22 mA/cm2 respectively. 0.28 mA/cm2 can be obtained by ITO/TiO2/CdS/PbS photoelectrode. The results showed that the optical and photoelectrochemistry properties and phtotcatalysis performance of TiO2 porous film were greatly improved by co-sensitized with CdS and PbS nanoclusters.

Abstract:Single crystal TiO2 nanosheet array films with dominant {001} facets were synthesized on FTO by a hydrothermal method. A simple strategy for the selective deposition of CdS nanoparticles on the low energy {101} facets by controlling the F content on the surface of TiO2 nanosheets is developed. For CdS/TiO2, under light irradiation, the photo-generated electrons flow from the {001} to {101} facets; meanwhile, the photo-generated electrons transfer from the CdS nanoparticles to the TiO2 nanosheets. The deposition of CdS nanoparticles on the {101} facets will shorten the pathways that the electrons must travel. Herein, the synergistic effect of the selective deposition of CdS nanoparticles on the {101} facets of TiO2 nanosheets and the different band edge positions of the {001} and {101} facets would facilitate the spatial separation of electrons and holes on different facets, leading to enhanced photoelectronic performance.

Abstract:A novel Cu2O/{101}TiO2 nanosheet (Cu2O/{101}TNS) array film was prepared by the electrodeposition of Cu2O on the {101} facets of anatase nanosheet arrays by varying electrodeposition potential. The crystal structure, morphology, elemental chemical states, optical properties, photoelectrochemical properties, and stability of Cu2O/{101}TNS array films were investigated in detail. For TNS, due to different band structures and band edge positions between {001} and {101} facets, Cu2O/{101} facets of TiO2 have higher band offset value which supply a larger driving force to increase the transport efficiency of carriers. Besides, owing to the directional flow of photo-generated electrons from {001} to {101} facets, the electrodeposition of Cu2O on the {101} facets of TNS will shorten the route length that the electrons must travel, thus reduce recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. In addition, as the applied negative potential is high enough, a part of Cu+ is reduced to Cu, which is beneficial for the photoexcited electrons transfer from CB of Cu2O to that of TiO2. The enhanced photoelectrochemical properties of Cu2O/{101}TNS array films can be attributed to the cocontributions of different band edge positions between {001} and {101} facets, Cu2O-Cu-TiO2 ternary components and vertically aligned single-crystal TiO2 nanosheet structure.

Abstract:The structure and morphology of nanosized PbS were studied, by high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. A three-layer coating of nanosized PbS was synthesized by an in situ method on TiO2 films. The results showed that in the PbS clusters, 2–3 nm particles form the major part, although some 3–10 nm particles also existed. The sizes of the particles distributed in a certain range. Such distribution played an important role in the surface modification of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:CdS nanoparticle-sensitized TiO2 (CdS-TiO2) nanotube arrays are synthesized with a facile one-step electrodeposition technique. In these composited nanostructures, CdS nanoparticles uniformly distribute in the TiO2 nanotubes and partially embed in the shell of TiO2 nanotubes. These structures effectively prevent CdS nanoparticles assembling or clogging the nanotubes and improve the contact area between CdS nanoparticles and the TiO2 shells. Furthermore, the size and distribution density of CdS nanoparticles can be tuned easily by controlling the concentration of electrolyte. Coupling TiO2 nanotubes with CdS nanoparticles extends the optical absorption from ultraviolet into the visible-light region up to 580 nm. An 11-fold enhancement in photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity is observed for CdS-TiO2 nanotube arrays compared with plain TiO2 nanotube arrays. This unique method is also suitable for the synthesis of other narrow band gap semiconductor-sensitized TiO2 nanotubes.
Few-Layer PbI2 Nanoparticle: A 2D Semiconductor with Lateral Quantum Confinement.

Abstract:Inspired by the superior optoelectronic performances of various 2D semiconductors, their new compositions and structures are being actively pursued in order to foster novel fundamental physics and device applications. As a layered semiconductor with a direct bandgap, few-layer PbI2 should have drawn much research attention due to their capability of emitting photons at short wavelengths of the visible spectrum. Here we chemically synthesize few-layer PbI2 flakes and nanoparticles, which demonstrate unique exciton properties that have rare counterparts in other 2D semiconductors. For three layers and more, the single PbI2 flakes can be utilized to show how the bandgap energy of a 2D semiconductor evolves with the changing layer thickness. The single PbI2 nanoparticles are associated with an ultranarrow photoluminescence line width of ∼1 meV, thus reflecting the influence of lateral quantum confinement on the energy-level structures of a 2D semiconductor. The above findings mark the emergence of a potent 2D platform that is more than complementary to well-studied transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers.

Abstract:Single-layer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) receive significant attention due to their intriguing physical properties for both fundamental research and potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, spintronics, catalysis, and so on. Here, we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of high-quality single-crystal, monolayer platinum diselenide (PtSe2), a new member of the layered TMDs family, by a single step of direct selenization of a Pt(111) substrate. A combination of atomic-resolution experimental characterizations and first-principle theoretic calculations reveals the atomic structure of the monolayer PtSe2/Pt(111). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements confirm for the first time the semiconducting electronic structure of monolayer PtSe2 (in contrast to its semimetallic bulk counterpart). The photocatalytic activity of monolayer PtSe2 film is evaluated by a methylene-blue photodegradation experiment, demonstrating its practical application as a promising photocatalyst. Moreover, circular polarization calculations predict that monolayer PtSe2 has also potential applications in valleytronics.

Abstract:Coated semiconductor nanoparticles (CSN) CdS/PbS in 60-80-angstrom diameter were fabricated by Pb2+ ions displacing Cd in Cd-S bonds on the surface of CdS single semiconductor nanoparticles (SSN) in CdS colloidal solution, although PbS has a different cubic crystalline structure than that of CdS. We use PVP (poly-(vinylpyrrolidone)) as a stabilizing agent to control the size of CdS, PbS SSN, and CdS/PbS CSN. We investigated CdS/PbS nanoparticles' optical absorption and found that the excitation energy from the Is hole state to the Is electron state becomes smaller as the fraction of PbS shell in CdS/PbS CSN increases. Thus, we synthesize coated nanoparticles with continuously tunable energy gap from PbS SSNs to CdS SSNs. The CdS-PbS solid solution phase diagram indicates CdS-PbS solid solution system cannot be formed at room temperature. The observed microstructure of CdS/PbS CSN by transmission electron microscopy and the electron diffraction pattern by CdS/PbS CSN provides evidence that the particles are coated.

Abstract:The nanoporous TiO2 films utilized in dye- sensitized solar cells ( DSSCs) possess a large surface- to- volume ratio, which facilitates the adsorption of sensitizing dye and the recombination due to the high density of surface traps. In this paper, nanosized PbS was fabricated on the TiO2 films. The components of the modified TiO2 film were studied by X- ray diffraction ( XRD) and electron probe microanalysis ( EPMA), while the structure of the film was characterized with BET physisorption and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy ( HRSEM). The results showed that the PbS particles were 2-3 nm and discrete on the surface of TiO2. Diffusion photovoltage ( PV) spectroscopy was employed to study the charge separation and diffusion processes inside modified and unmodified TiO2 films. The diffusion PV signals revealed that the traps on the surface of TiO2 were extremely reduced due to the presence of PbS. The results of transient photovoltage and back I- V characteristics showed that the back reaction, that is, the recombination due to the reaction between an electron on TiO2 and the hole- transporting media, was retarded significantly.

Abstract:Abstract Interface charge transfer plays a key role in the performance of semiconductors for different kinds of solar energy utilization, such as photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, photochromism and photo-induced superhydrophilicity. In previous studies, different mechanisms have been used to understand interface charge transfer processes. However, the charge transfer mechanism at the solid/liquid interface remains a controversial topic. Here, taking TiO2 as a model, we find and prove, via experiments, the new characteristic of photo-induced bipolarity of the surface layer (reduction faradaic layer and oxidation faradaic layer) on a semiconductor for the first time. Different from energy level positions in the classic surface states transfer mechanism, the potential window of a surface faradaic layer is located out of the forbidden band. Moreover, we find that the reduction faradaic layer and oxidation faradaic layer serve as electron and hole transfer mediators in photocatalysis, while the bipolarity or mono-polarity of the surface layer on a semiconductor depends on the applied potential in photoelectrocatalysis. The new characteristic of bipolarity can also offer new insights into the charge transfer process at the semiconductor/liquid interface for solar energy utilization.

Abstract:In this work, a titanium dioxide and lead sulfide (TiO2/PbS) nano-size heterostructure with tin sulfide was fabricated and coated via a two-step direct deposition process. Its microstructure, morphology, elemental composition, optical absorption, and photochemical activity were investigated. Linear sweep voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry curves substantiated its catalytic activity, indicating quantum dot effects of a well-developed space charge domain on the surface of the hybrid structure. These give rise to electron-hole recombination suppression and a high charge mobility rate. Moreover, direct stabilization was identified in current density, corresponding to the hybrid structures limiting the diffusion current process. Higher J SC values observed were substantiated by the role of quantum dot-size effects and enhanced crystalline structures, leading to a reduction in series resistance and an improved conversion efficiency of 10.05%. Overall, theoretical analyses and empirical findings indicated that the seamless migration of photoexcited electrons across the interfaces of SnS and PbS is linked to quantum dot effect synergy. This is facilitated by the space charge region, which serves as a conduit for efficient electron transfer between the respective materials.

Abstract:A novel metal/semiconductor hybrid nanostructure with enhanced catalytic functions has been prepared by a simple self-assembly approach. This new bifunctional nanocatalyst consists of evenly dispersed Au/Pt hybrid nanoparticles (Au/Pt NPs) assembled on NH2 group functionalized anatase TiO2 colloid spheres with nanoporous surface (f-TiO2). The resulting bimetallic nanoparticles/TiO2 (noted as f-TiO2-Au/Pt NPs) hybrid nanostructure is characterized by various methods and expected as a promising catalyst in electrochemical and photoelectrochemical applications because of its satisfactory or even enhanced catalytic properties from both TiO2 and Au/Pt NPs. Compared with the f-TiO2, the electrochemical results indicate that the as-prepared f-TiO2-Au/Pt NPs exhibited more prominent electrocatalytic reduction toward hydrogen peroxide at low potential, which was then used as a sensitive sensor with a detection limit of 75 nM. Most importantly, the present hybrid material has the better photocatalytic property, as demonstrated by the photoelectrochemical catalysis of glucose.

Abstract:In this paper, A three-layer coating nano-sized PbS was synthesized by an in-situ method on TiO2 films. The structure and morphology of nano-sized PbS was studied, characterizations such as TEM and XRD were used. The results indicated that in the PbS clusters, particles of 2-3 nm take the principle part, while some 3-10 nm particles also exist. Such distribution played an important role in interface modifying dye-sensitized solar cells, and the nano-sized PbS modification results in a 21% improvement in overall photo-to-electrical conversion efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:In order to explore the influence of the ferroelectric surface on the structure and properties of semiconductor oxides, the growth of CdS nanocrystals was regulated and controlled by taking single-crystal perovskite PbTiO3 nanosheets as the substrate through a simple hydrothermal method. Through composition design, a series of PbTiO3-CdS nanocomposite materials with different loading concentrations were prepared, and their microstructure and photocatalytic properties were systematically analyzed. Studies show that in the prepared product, CdS nanoparticles selectively grow on the surfaces of PbTiO3 nanosheets, and their morphology is affected by the exposed surfaces of PbTiO3 nanosheets. There is a clear interface between the PbTiO3 substrate and CdS nanoparticles. The concentration of the initial reactant and the time of hydrothermal reaction also significantly affect the crystal morphology of CdS. Photocatalysis studies have shown that the prepared PbTiO3-CdS nanocomposite material has a significant degradation effect on 10 mg/L of Rhodamine B aqueous solution. The degradation efficiency rises with the increase of CdS loading concentration. When degrading 10 mg/L Rhodamine B aqueous solution, the PbTiO3-CdS sample with a mass fraction of 3% can reach a degradation rate of 72% within 120 min.
Novel Tio2-Pt@Sio2 Nanocomposites With High Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:This article reports a facile and controllable two-step method to construct TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites. TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), with small size and high surface energy, were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction process. The TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites were fabricated by a reverse micro-emulsion method. SiO2 shell coated NPs were adopted for further photocatalytic reaction. Because of their small size and high surface energy, TiO2@SiO2 and TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites show higher photocatalytic activity than commercial Degussa P25. Compared with TiO2@SiO2, TiO2-Pt@SiO(2)nanocomposites have improved photocatalytic activity due to the Pt induced spatial separation of electrons and holes. The silica shells not only maintain the structure of the nanocomposites but also prevent their aggregation during the photocatalytic reactions, which is highly important for the good durability of the photocatalyst. This strategy is simple, albeit efficient, and can be extended to the synthesis of other composites of noble metals. It has opened a new window for the construction of hetero-nanocomposites with high activity and durability, which would serve as excellent models in catalytic systems of both theoretical and practical interest.

Abstract:Core-shell heterostructured nanomaterials with mesopores have enormous potential applications in diverse fields. Herein, we report a facile extended Stober method to synthesize core-shell heterostructured semiconducting nanomaterials with mesoporosity. Silver (Ag) metal-assisted chemically wet etched p-type silicon nanowires (Si NWs) were used as the core, and layer-controllable mesoporous n-type anatase TiO2 was grown as the shell to successfully fabricate the core-shell p-Si@mesoporous n-TiO2 hybrid materials. Detailed characterization reveals that the TiO2 shell was composed of aggregated crystalline TiO2 nanoparticles with diameters of approximate to 15 nm, where the TiO2 coating thickness was tuned approximate to 50 nm. The interstitial pores of these nanoparticles were observed with average pore sizes of 4-8 nm. The core-shell structured p-Si@mesoporous n-TiO2 hybrid materials were demonstrated as photocathodes for the solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) production of H-2 at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface.

Abstract:Tetrasulfonated copper phthalocyanine (CuTsPc)-capped TiO2 nanoparticle ultrathin films were fabricated by a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique. Alternating bilayer structures were formed by consecutive adsorption of CuTsPc-capped TiO2 nanoparticles with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride). Optical and electrical measurements were carried out to characterize the CuTsPc-capped TiO2 nanoparticle ultrathin films. Optical measurements revealed uniform deposition. The surface morphology of such bilayer films showed a granular morphology similar to other classes of LBL films. Electrical measurements revealed an abnormal phenomenon under white light illumination. Electrochemical and photoelectrochemical measurements on such a bilayer system were carried out to elucidate the electron transport processes and the photovoltaic effect.
