Abstract:Translation activity is translators' cognitive processing of two language information,which involves interactions between translators' language and knowledge representation. During translation process,translators conduct frequent bilingual switches and are influenced by both their L1 and L2 mental lexicons. Consequently,translators ' phonological and semantic representations may change with translation training and practice. The present study explores the influence of translation practice on college students' concept relations of their mental lexicon through word associations. The results indicate that: First,difference is found between translators' L1 and L2 concept relations. Their awareness of thematic relations in L2 is significantly weaker than that in L1; Second,translation practice can strengthen translators' awareness of semantic relations and weaken their attention on L2 words' phonological and orthographic forms; Third,translators' awareness of thematic relations is significantly enhanced with the development of translation capacity.

It provides enlightenment for the translator to realize the benign interaction between translation practice and translation theory and is beneficial to the development of translation studies.

Abstract:Translation studies conducted since China’s reform and opening up has played a pivotal role in the establishment of translation as a discipline in this country.Whether in introducing insightful theoretical perspectives on the translational practice,laying a conceptual foundation for the discipline,promoting translation-related pedagogy, enriching the teaching of foreign languages,fostering a historical understanding of the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,or enhancing China’s soft power,remarkable achievements have been made by Chinese translation scholars.Having gained its disciplinary status and succeeded in refuting popularly held misassumptions such as"translation is not amenable to theory"or"theories of translation are useless,"however,how translation studies should further develop itself in China poses a formidable challenge to its practitioners.This paper takes up the challenge by reflecting on some of the burning issues of the moment,including those over the exclusive adoption of the cultural approach to the study of translation,the dearth of translation-specific theoretical sources,and the subordination of translation to some better established disciplines.

Abstract:The paper focuses on theoretical issues in the field of pedagogy in translation.Compared with traditional translation teaching,process-oriented translation teaching(PROTT),due to its own advantages,can better accommodate the requirements of modern society on learners in terms of knowledge and skill acquisition.Under the theoretical framework of the curriculum theory,the two models of translation teaching are compared and analyzed in four respects,that is,rationales,objectives,procedures and evaluation strategies.Based on the preceding comparisons and analyses,the authors argue that PROTT can not only improve student translators' autonomous learning but also provide a foothold for translation teachers/trainers to explicate translation theories used in translators' decision-making process.

Abstract:Institutional teaching of Translation Studies has evolved in the past decades. I believe this growth is in part due to the connection between theory and teaching practice. The present article focusses on how seven proponents of various translation theories teach in classrooms, on why theory is important for the teaching of the profession, and on the nature of theory. This discussion leads to a fundamental concern for the traing future translators for professional work: “On what basis could the selection, grading and presentation of materials for the training of translators be made more effective?” (Hatim and Mason 1997: 179) It is argued that translation trainees should be exposed on a variety of approaches to translation which are inspired by and connect to different theoretical schools so that students are in this way taught to be flexible in their approach to texts and will also learn theory in practical application.

Abstract:Due to economic globalization,China's exchange with foreign countries in various fields,such as politics,economics,science and cultures,becoming more and more frequent,producing new requirements for the cultivation of qualified translators and interpreters.Therefore,it is necessary to clarify two basic problems in translators and interpreters' education:(1)the respective status of and relationship between Undergraduate Translation Major(UTM)and Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI);(2)the relationship between the training of translation skills and the cultivation of theoretical attainment in these programs.The paper starts by fixing the objective of cultivating qualified translators and interpreters,and proposes the specific requirements for the buildup of theoretical attainment in their training programs.Then after discussing the compilation of theoretical textbooks in Translation Studies with a view to nurturing theoretical attainment in qualified translators and interpreters,it sets forth relevant principles for compiling such textbooks;that is,they should be conducive to the establishment of appropriate views on translation and its history characterized by qualified translators and interpreters,and be conducive to their understanding of the science of translation and their mastery of translation skills.

Abstract:The present essay, based on the author's close reading of J. Hillis Miller's article on the translation of theory, illustrates the principle of the deconstructive translation: the traveling of theory is realized by means of translation, for any theory, once translated, might be misread and mistranslated; but on the other hand, this misreading and mistranslation will lead to a new start, or bring about transformation in another context. If this transformation caused by translation could endow the theory with an"afterlife" in another context, the translation itself should be viewed more successful than frustrating. So to the author, Miller's essay is a complement to Edward Said's concept of traveling theory and a great contribution to deconstructive translation theory.

Abstract:Based on the study of mother-tongue acquisition, this paper probes into the teaching of translation through the analysis of semantic match-making and syntactic frames. It provides a justifiable distinction between teaching translation and translation teaching. In teaching translation learners are exposed to more grammar translation and matched chunks than to semantic processing as expected in translation teaching class, where active and conscious involvements in processing mis-matched chunks are necessary. This process is problem-solving in nature. The application of semantic match-making in the two kinds of teaching can greatly strengthen students' cognitive power and creative performance.

Abstract:Researchers have long problematized the prevalence of Eurocentrism in modern Western translation theory. Alternative theories have been developing across many contexts, including China. This review examines 153 theory-related articles in four leading indexed Chinese journals that publish studies on translation. We analyzed the selected articles to explore the patterns in the development of Chinese translation theory through the past decade. Our analysis identified three characteristics of the development of Chinese translation theory: (1) Chinese translation theory developed under a heavy Western influence; (2) translation theories developed by translators; and (3) "theory"-related theoretical development on translation. These insights may help readers who do not have direct access to translation studies published in the Chinese language to better appreciate evolving translation theories that may counteract the inadequacy of Eurocentric approaches.

Abstract:Since Holmes’ founding statement for translation studies in 1972, four decades have passed. During that time some trends seem to have developed in the discipline, and it is time to stop and take stock. This paper touches upon issues essential to understanding translation studies today, such as (1) the nature of translation; (2) the research scope of translation studies; (3) interdisciplinary orientation and its implications; (4) research methods; and (5) the relationship between translation theory and practice. An examination of these issues indicates that the discipline of translation studies is increasingly subject to opposing or competing research approaches and is exhibiting a kind of disciplinary fragmentation. There are imbalances in the research methods used and in the topics that emerge in the research literature. There is a growing gap between translation theory and practice. This paper tries to examine the reasons for these trends and offer perspectives on ways to reach some common disciplinary and professional ground.

Abstract:This study considers translation as a joint enterprise in the management of both linguistic translation and associated meaning-making resources in English language teacher talk from a translanguaging perspective. Analysis of classroom teaching in Chinese universities using conversation analysis (CA) under the SETT (self-evaluation of teacher talk) framework reveals that the sequential patterns of translation go beyond the linguistic structure and are assimilated into a translanguaging pedagogical frame in alignment with dynamic L2 classroom modes. The findings contribute to an understanding of translanguaging effect within certain L2 classroom contexts. As such, the research further informs the appropriate use of translation/translanguaging practice to develop classroom interactional competence.

Abstract:By investigating its history in the past 30 years,this paper finds that translation technology teaching research in the Chinese mainland,has gone through the initial stage（1990-2006）,the expansion stage（2007-2015）and the deepening stage（2016-）,presenting a shallow-to-deep trend,with perspectives from simplification to diversification. To be specific,the research subjects are various and comprehensive,ranging from the study of teaching syllabus,textbooks,teaching models,curriculum designing to the explorations of teaching philosophy,teaching effectiveness and technological ethics. In order to facilitate translation technology pedagogy to be more scientific and systematic,it is recommended to strengthen the dialogue with the international scholars in the future by expanding research subjects at deeper levels to conduct more interdisciplinary researches.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to provide a discussion of some of the basic differences and similarities between the Chinese and Western traditions of translation. After analysing some of the major findings about what is shared and what is unshared between the two traditions, as well as what lies beneath these differences and similarities, four basic conclusions are made; namely, (a) comparative translation studies is important and should be fully developed; (b) the differences between the Chinese and Western translation traditions are necessarily conditioned by differences in their broader socio-cultural framework; (c) quite similar ideas have been produced over the centuries between China and the West, which may be regarded as elements of ‘universality' as the most outstanding feature of theoretical discussions about translation across language-cultures; and most importantly, (d) an understanding of Chinese-Western differences and similarities should help create a meaningful environment in which translators and translation theorists from different traditions can draw upon one another's experiences. The rationale of the discussion is that by bringing culturally disparate translation traditions such as the Chinese and Western into comparison, important insights may be gained about the nature of translation and translation studies in general.

The Interpreter and Translator Trainer

Abstract:Research shows that translation teachers with insufficient translation experience will become the bottleneck hindering the development of translation education. However, few studies have examined teachers' translation experience or factors motivating or demotivating them to practice translation. This study attempts to fill the gap by interviewing 11 experienced teachers in 9 Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) programmes in China following a semi-structured outline informed by a Systems Theory Framework (STF). It is found that despite the subjects' positive perceptions on the role of translation practice in translation teaching, their translation practice is passive, random, and somewhat utilitarian. Shaped by the combined influences of the individual, social, and environmental-societal systems, they take on translation tasks at the request of personal connections or to meet their research quota. They make hardly any formal contact with the translation market; neither are they familiar with modern technologies used in translation and language service companies. The study concludes by drawing implications for training, recruiting, and appraising translation teachers in China and beyond.

Abstract:As international exchange continues to expand and intensify, E-C (English-Chinese) translation teaching for postgraduates of non-English majors, aimed at nurturing interdisciplinary talents equipped with both professional knowledge and pragmatic competence, has garnered widespread attention. Domestic scholars have explored the aspects of “teaching” and “learning” in E-C translation teaching for postgraduates of non-English majors from multiple dimensions. This paper reviews E-C translation teaching for postgraduates of non-English majors in China in the past two decades based on representative studies, sorts out the focus and current status of research, and looks forward to the future development of teaching practice. We found that universities generally advocate and adopt interdisciplinary teaching methods that integrate “foreign language” into “majors”, and E-C translation teaching for postgraduates of non-English majors also revealed aspects that urgently need to be improved. Therefore, reviewing and reflecting on research related to translation teaching and proposing targeted measures based on its current teaching challenges have extremely important theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract:Translator behavior criticism theory is regarded as one of the main current translation studies theory in China. It is proposed by Professor Zhou Lingshun in 2010 and now it has been for 10 years. In 2014, he made his proposals clearly in two of his influential books. After that, this theory has drawn a lot of attention from the academic circle and the number of related articles on it is increasing year by year. This article starts from changes of the role of translator and translator’s position as the center, which provides the background for this theory. Then it moves on to make clear the main proposals and practice of this theory, especially his “truth-seeking and utility attaining” continuum mode of evaluation. Through this continuum mode, one can measure the degree of rationality of a translator’s behavior by taking various factors into consideration, and then the evaluation of the translated version. This theory provides a new perspective on translation by combining translator’s behavior with translation. But in practice, some scholars also questioned the manipulability of his continuum mode. So in the end, this article talks about the significance and limitations of this theory. His theory is a breakthrough in translation studies, but still needs to be further polished.

Theory and Practice in Language Studies

Abstract:This paper generally reviews the situation of international translation teaching research from five perspectives: research trends, subjects, contents, research nature, and the authors’ disciplinary backgrounds. The results indicate that: (1) on the whole, the number of papers published steadily increases; (2) the undergraduates majoring in translation take up a dominant percentage of the subjects; (3) the content focuses on thematic research and applied research; (4) speculative research are accounting for the main part in methodology, in which literature method is usually employed as research instrument; (5) the authors’ academic backgrounds mainly focus on the fields of linguistics and translation, presenting a multi-disciplinary feature. Finally, the characteristics and development trends of international translation teaching and research are summarized and enlightened.
