Abstract:Liang Shu-ming started his discussion from the concept of "intention': the selection leads to different life directions,to different cultural patterns and to unique cultural systems.His cultural pluralist standpoint derives 'three world cultural approaches' and 'three recurrence stages of world cultures'.His macroscopic comparison of the Chinese,Western and Indian cultures explores the national identity of Chinese culture and points out the future direction of development with the advent of the surge of western thoughts.Reflections on his thoughts are conducive to understanding the twists and turns of the development of the traditional Chinese culture in modern times and also to judging the future and the value of Chinese culture.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the analysis of the discussions around the theory of cultural interactions by Chinese philosopher Liang Shuming. The teaching was formed in the 1920s in the framework of New Culture Movement and resonated both with contemporaries and nowadays thinkers contemplating global changes. The relevance of the study of Liang Shuming’s ideas on culture is due to its popularity in the culture of modern China. The study aims to identify the starting points that made it possible to form the modern concept of culture with Chinese characteristics. In accordance with the set goal, it was necessary to solve the following tasks: 1) analyze the views of Liang Shuming on the relationship between Western and Chinese cultures; 2) clarify the specifics of Liang Shuming’s conceptual apparatus, considering the key ideas of his book Eastern and Western Cultures and Their Philosophies; 3) identify the features of the interpretation of Liang’s ideas about the role of Chinese culture in various philosophical traditions; 4) describe the key ideas of discussions about the role of Chinese culture in the 1920s; 5) trace the reception of Liang Shuming’s ideas in modern Chinese philosophy. The study is based on the original works of Liang Shuming and their critical reviews from both Europe and the Americas. The methods employed are those of comparative analysis and the hermeneutic approach. Turning to Liang's teachings allowed us to use this specific example to trace the features of the formation of the theory of interaction between Western and Chinese culture in the Chinese version of the philosophy of culture. As a result of the research, new sources on Chinese philosophy of culture are introduced into scientific circulation, allowing us to expand and deepen the interpretation of the problems of the relationship between Western and Chinese cultures and values in the context of the problems posed by Liang Shuming. Their analysis against the backdrop of discussions a century ago shows that the idea of a triune Chinese culture as the future of world civilization remains debatable today. At the same time, the philosophy of the special Chinese way actively absorbs the ideas of dialectical interaction between East and West, which lie in line with Liang’s reasoning about China as a world civilization.

Abstract:Liang Shuming's cultural ideology of Buddhism is based on the Buddhist philosophy of consciousness. Through the analysis of consciousness, he established ontology and epistemdogy of his own which he latter applied as theoretcal fowndation and method in evaluationg the three categories of western, Chinese and lndian culture. Apart from that, Liang Shuming made an essential distinction in nature between Buddhist philosophy and western philosophy. He held the view that the former lies in seeking to know nothing but the later know all. Therefore, Buddhist philosophy and western philosophy are two basically different kinds of philosophy. Liang Shuming upheld Buddhist consciousness for the purpose of publicizing intuitionism because he believed that intuition is the only means to help understand the universal noumenon.

Abstract:This book is divided into three main parts: an introduction to theories of culture, a section on Chinese culture, and one on cultural construction. The first part can be interpreted as an attempt to explore the meta-theoretical system of culture at the philosophical level. Based on the concept of “culture as ways of living,” the book further defines “culture” as “the preparation of people,” including the processes by which people adapt to local cultural and social customs. It stresses the subjectivity of culture, and the cultural rights and responsibilities of humankind. The second part takes on the subjective perspective of contemporary Chinese culture, interpreting it within the context of the historical situation of the Chinese people and nation, before engaging in a systematic reflection on several fundamental issues of Chinese culture. It closes by evaluating Chinese cultural practices and formulating a type of contemporary cultural self-identity. The book’s third part focuses on the interconnection between the revival of the Chinese nation and the modernization of Chinese society, analyzing the conditions and challenges for the three primary types of contemporary Chinese culture: material culture, political culture and spiritual culture. Lastly, the book puts forward suggestions concerning several of the critical problems facing a society in transition.

Abstract:Gu Hongming was a cultural conservative who mastered Chinese and the Western civilization,by this standpoint, he made comparison between Chinese and the Western civilization from various angles and various aspects,therewith to get the unique value and subjectivity of Chinese civilization projected,and to emphasize the combination on the basis of the communication between China and the West. His Confucian Point of View was: from the narrow sense concept of religion, Confucianism was not a religion, but from the social effect made by it, it was as same as religion,and can be regarded as broad sense religion.Confucianism was a kind of social religion or state religion, its church was family and school. Confucianism was a kind of good citizen religions that took ritual and justice as its essence, selflessness as its philosophy, shame sense as its religious emotion. Gu Hongming also had historical reflection on the traditional Confucianism, and had some criticism on the modern Confucian movement.

Abstract:In how to treat the issue of Chinese traditional culture,there are always three viewpoints: supporting faction,suppressing faction and neutral faction.But the common overall Abstract qualitative method which they adopt is not reliable,so we need new ways to try something new.That is,in the perspective of culture tool theory,with reference to the modern culture and alien culture,take seven compositions of Chinese traditional culture: the language,religion,science,technology,philosophy,art and rules,as different functional tools to assess them individually,and then form a general evaluation of Chinese traditional culture.Thus we can conclude that,in Chinese traditional culture,only the traditional language and religions are able to stand still in use today as their original ways and not losing effectiveness;although the traditional philosophy and arts are basically able to stand still in use today,but the reward power to Chinese nation is not so much as they had been created;as for the traditional scientific techniques and rules belong to things which are already backward on the overall trend.Therefore,in general the Chinese traditional culture can not adapt to the contemporary social reality and meet the needs of modern people,while its global influence,is mainly embodied in the attraction to other nations rather than assimilation.

Abstract:CAI Yuan-pei's view on the Chinese and Western Culture constitutes an important and most characteristic part of his school of thought.In regard to traditional culture,he advocated deconstructing Confucian ideology,stood for the reform on Chinese characters and criticized the non-scientific feature of traditional medicine,all of which are basically consistent with the New Culture Movement.On the other hand,he himself respected Confucius enormously and was in great favor of the Doctrine of the Mean of the Confucian school.With regard to Western culture,CAI Yuan-pei emphasizes greatly the importance of learning scientific concepts from the European culture,saying that Europeanization means scientification.He defined the New Culture Movement as the Chinese Renaissance.CAI Yuan-pei's view on the Chinese culture and the Western culture is of significant instructional value in the construction of the academic atmosphere at Peking University.

Abstract:With China being one of the largest sources of inbound tourists to Australia, the need to better understand Chinese culture has never been more highly emphasised by various organisations represented in Australian media, yet some cultural misreading with thinly-veiled value judgements are regularly discerned. Accordingly, a better cultural awareness is imperative for Australians to approach and understand Chinese people. This paper gives a brief review of the definitions of culture, its emergence and role in international relations. It then proceeds to the definition of Chinese culture and in particular, the turbulent history of modern Chinese culture. After a few preconceptions and misconceptions of Chinese culture in Australia are presented for discussion, finally some suggestions are made to help develop a historical and holistic view of Chinese culture.

Abstract:In the age of Globalization, cultural identity is a pointed and hotly debated question in academia. Cultural identity involves a core of traditional values and the recognition of several developing layers: the individual, the community and the nation. China has two dominant cultural tendencies: conservatism and protectionism. This has resulted in rejecting Western discourse to preserve a supposedly unchangeable Chinese identity. Comparative models that study cultural and literary exchanges between China and the West were based on dualist perceptions of spatio-temporal orientation. The multi-dimensional model of cross-cultural research espoused in this paper re-examines the relationships between Chinese and Western cultures and their literature. It also examines the misappropriation, transplantation, transfer and transformation of cultural representations and theories across diverse historical periods. As opposed to the dualist model of traditional comparators approaches, where relations are simplified to A influences B. the multi-dimensional model operates complex mapping, between ancient Chinese culture and Western culture, and then back to modern Chinese culture. This paper offers a case study of the complexity of cross-cultural exchanges over time, with the example of Ji Junxiang's The Orphan of Zhao, its sources, (mis)adaptations and critical interpretations.

Abstract:Culture is the cumulative deposit of knowledge, traditions, beliefs acquired by a human community in the course of generations: ethics is one of the most important of such beliefs. As for the intercultural communication, the discipline which studies a cultural dialogue about various issues across different communities, since the eighties of the last century it has been the object of various theories, based on experimental data collections: among them the ‘Values Orientation Theory’ by F.R. Kluckhohn and F. Strodtbeck, the ‘Cultural Dimensions Theory’ by G. Hofstede and the ‘Theory of Basic Values’ by S.H. Schwartz. One of the goals of this paper is to give a closer look at those theories. In the same period of time an ‘ethical turn’ manifested itself in western literary studies, after a long period of post-modernist disengagement, by initiative of J. Gardner, M. C. Nussbaum and J. Habermas, among others: the same happened in China in the eve of the new millennium, owing to the studies on comparative literature by Nie Zhenzhao. Literary works constitute an important vehicle of ethical intercultural communication. A second goal of the present paper is that of suggesting a ‘constructivist approach’ in the cultural dialogue between the western world and China, combining the results of those theoretical models with a comparative analysis of literary works chosen ad hoc, as recently done by Xu Zhilin in her comparative study of female images in ‘A leaf in the storm’, by Lin Yutang, and ‘Gone with the wind’, by Margareth Mitchell, from the perspective of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension Theory.

Abstract:There are differences between the Chinese and the Chinese learning. The study of the latter began with the comparison between the Chinese learning and the Western learning,and with the rearrangement of the ancient Chinese literature within the frame of the Western learning.It was mostly instructive in the shaping of the ideology of Chinese modern revolution.The contemporary Chinese learning came from the discovery of the essential shortcomings in the Western learning,and from the necessity of the revival of Chinese cultural life.The distinction between the spirits of Chinese culture and the Western culture is that between practical sensuousness and practical reason, a knowledge of which should be the starting point of constructing the contemporary Chinese learning.The construction has its basis in the life-praxis of Chinese people and enlightenment from historical materialism and contemporary Western ontological revolution.After that,the chronic malady of Chinese culture can be diagnosed and treated at root,and contemporary Chinese spirit and destiny can be founded and reached.

Abstract:Western and Chinese cultures have great distinctions. Culture is generally divided into material, institutional and spiritual cultures, and they are usually correlated. By analyzing two differences in material culture, including the differences in architecture and painting in China and the West, diverse modes of thinking in Western and Chinese cultures can be figured out. Westerners hold a philosophy that humans and the beauty of humans should be valued while Chinese people believe that the harmonious coexistence of man and nature should be given priority. Abstract:As the philosophical words in the era of globalization,the philosophy of culture is being paid for more and more attention.After having experienced the phase of introduction,digestion and absorption, the research on philosophy of culture in China is necessarily about to initiate the time of research on"the localized philosophy of culture in China".With the above pursuit,we ought to survey the resources of traditional Chinese philosophy of culture in the view of the contemporary development of world civilization, and to confront the present mankind's common concern of the development issues of civilization and then work out the Chinese instructive solution in the result of the cultural self-consciousness.On the account of the common topics of interests on the integral culture development,the balance between technology and spirits in the knowledge economy time,and the harmony between humankind and nature,we may insist that the outlook on integral organic culture,the wisdom of harmony-oriented neutrality,the inner-transcendence concepts of physical and mental harmony,and the traditional ecological ideas of the harmony between humans and nature are all irreplaceable for the cause of reconstructing the future human civilization.
