Abstract:This paper presents a research of bionic propulsion technology based upon an experiment of two fish-tail models in C-starts swimming.Underwater bionic propulsion technology that combines the bionics with submerged vehicle will be a breakthrough in the underwater vehicle propulsion system design.A preliminary study was carried out to investigate the fluid structure and dynamic performances of fish-tail of various shapes in C-start mode. The different tail shapes were shown to have significant effects on the wake structure and dynamic performances in fish C-starts.The shape of fish-tail is essentially fallen into two types, namely the symmetrical and the asymmetrical. Two tail models were selected(the rectangle and the triangle tail)as the typically symmetrical and asymmetrical shape. The flow structure was visualized, the forces and moments acting on the models measured. It was found that the wake structure of two models were different:the rectangle model had one main vortex ring at the model tip,and the triangle generated two vortex rings in the wake.Different wake structure results in different dynamical effects on the C-starts.It is seen that the rectangle model is good for fish maneuvering, while the triangle model more suitable for cruising.Experiments of maneuverability were also conducted on the modes with the shape similar to the tails of crucian(the rectangle shape)and shark(the triangle shape).Similar results were then obtained.
