Abstract:Abstract. Atmospheric aerosols play critical roles in air quality, public health, and visibility. In addition, they strongly influence climate by scattering solar radiation and by changing the reflectivity and lifetime of clouds. One major but still poorly understood source of atmospheric aerosol is new particle formation, which consists of the formation of thermodynamically stable clusters from trace gas molecules (homogeneous nucleation) followed by growth of these clusters to a detectable size (~3 nm). Because freshly nucleated clusters are most susceptible to loss due to high rate of coagulation with pre-existing aerosol population, the initial growth rate strongly influences the rate of new particle formation and ambient aerosol population. Whereas many field observations and modeling studies indicate that organics enhance the initial growth of the clusters and therefore new particle formation, thermodynamic considerations would suggest that the strong increase of equilibrium vapor concentration due to cluster surface curvature (Kelvin effect) may prevent ambient organics from condensing on these small clusters. Here the initial condensational growth of freshly nucleated clusters is described as heterogeneous nucleation of organic molecules onto these clusters. We find that the strong gradient in cluster population with respect to its size lead to positive cluster number flux, and therefore driving the growth of clusters substantially smaller than the Kelvin diameter, conventionally considered as the minimum particle size that can be grown through condensation. The conventional approach neglects this contribution from the cluster concentration gradient, and underestimates the rate of new particle formation by a factor of up to 60.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of central importance in the atmosphere because of their close relation to air quality and climate change. As a significant sink for VOCs, the fate of VOCs via heterogeneous reactions may explain the big gap between field and model studies. These reactions play as yet unclear but potentially crucial role in atmospheric processes. In order to better evaluate this reaction pathway, we present the first specific review for the progress of heterogeneous reaction studies on VOCs, including carbonyl compounds, organic acids, alcohols, and so on. Our review focuses on the processes for heterogeneous reactions of VOCs under varying experimental conditions, as well as their implications for trace gas and HOx budget, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, physicochemical properties of aerosols, and human health. Finally, we propose the future direction for laboratory studies of heterogeneous chemistry of VOCs that should be carried out under more atmospherically relevant conditions, with a special emphasis on the effects of relative humidity and illumination, the multicomponent reaction systems, and reactivity of aged and authentic particles. In particular, more reliable uptake coefficients, based on the abundant elaborate laboratory studies, appropriate calibration, and logical choice criterion, are urgently required in atmospheric models.
Connection of Organics to Atmospheric New Particle Formation and Growth at an Urban Site of Beijing

Abstract:In the present work, we aim to elucidate the roles of low-volatility organic vapors in atmospheric new particle formation in urban Beijing. Proposed organic molecules are derived from both the ambient measurement and the reasonable proxy. Several representations for the nucleation theories involving sulfuric acid and organic vapors are evaluated. The particle nucleation rates show good correlations both with sulfuric acid and organic vapors, suggesting that both play an important role in the atmospheric new particle formation. For the entire data set, the best fit (R = 0.79, slope = 1.1) between the observed and modeled particle nucleation rates is achieved with the homogenous nucleation theory of sulfuric acid (both homomolecularly and heteromolecularly) with separate coefficients in J = K-SA1[H2SO4](2) + K-SA2[H2SO4][Org]. In addition, sulfuric acid concentration only contributes a small fraction (<15%) to the total observed growth rate. The growth rates of 7-30 nm particles show positive correlation with the organic vapors oxidized by ozone, suggesting that particle nucleation may be controlled by the light intensity or OH concentration, while the growth of nucleation mode particles seems to be limited more by the Concentrations of the organic precursors. Abstract:Abstract A list of authors and their affiliations appears at the end of the paper New-particle formation is a major contributor to urban smog 1,2 , but how it occurs in cities is often puzzling 3 . If the growth rates of urban particles are similar to those found in cleaner environments (1–10 nanometres per hour), then existing understanding suggests that new urban particles should be rapidly scavenged by the high concentration of pre-existing particles. Here we show, through experiments performed under atmospheric conditions in the CLOUD chamber at CERN, that below about +5 degrees Celsius, nitric acid and ammonia vapours can condense onto freshly nucleated particles as small as a few nanometres in diameter. Moreover, when it is cold enough (below −15 degrees Celsius), nitric acid and ammonia can nucleate directly through an acid–base stabilization mechanism to form ammonium nitrate particles. Given that these vapours are often one thousand times more abundant than sulfuric acid, the resulting particle growth rates can be extremely high, reaching well above 100 nanometres per hour. However, these high growth rates require the gas-particle ammonium nitrate system to be out of equilibrium in order to sustain gas-phase supersaturations. In view of the strong temperature dependence that we measure for the gas-phase supersaturations, we expect such transient conditions to occur in inhomogeneous urban settings, especially in wintertime, driven by vertical mixing and by strong local sources such as traffic. Even though rapid growth from nitric acid and ammonia condensation may last for only a few minutes, it is nonetheless fast enough to shepherd freshly nucleated particles through the smallest size range where they are most vulnerable to scavenging loss, thus greatly increasing their survival probability. We also expect nitric acid and ammonia nucleation and rapid growth to be important in the relatively clean and cold upper free troposphere, where ammonia can be convected from the continental boundary layer and nitric acid is abundant from electrical storms 4,5 .

Abstract:Particles formed in the atmosphere via nucleation provide about half the number of atmospheric cloud condensation nuclei, but in many locations, this process is limited by the growth of the newly formed particles. That growth is often via condensation of organic vapors. Identification of these vapors and their sources is thus fundamental for simulating changes to aerosol-cloud interactions, which are one of the most uncertain aspects of anthropogenic climate forcing. Here we present direct molecular-level observations of a distribution of organic vapors in a forested environment that can explain simultaneously observed atmospheric nanoparticle growth from 3 to 50 nm. Furthermore, the volatility distribution of these vapors is sufficient to explain nanoparticle growth without invoking particle-phase processes. The agreement between observed mass growth, and the growth predicted from the observed mass of condensing vapors in a forested environment thus represents an important step forward in the characterization of atmospheric particle growth.

Abstract:Significance The formation of nanoparticles by condensable vapors in the atmosphere influences radiative forcing and therefore climate. We explored the detailed mechanism of particle formation, in particular the role of oxidized organic molecules that arise from the oxidation of monoterpenes, a class of volatile organic compounds emitted from plants. We mimicked atmospheric conditions in a well-controlled laboratory setup and found that these oxidized organics form initial clusters directly with single sulfuric acid molecules. The clusters then grow by the further addition of both sulfuric acid and organic molecules. Some of the organics are remarkably highly oxidized, a critical feature that enables them to participate in forming initial stable molecular clusters and to facilitate the first steps of atmospheric nanoparticle formation.

Abstract:New particle formation (NPF) in the atmosphere i.e. nucleation of gas phase precursors and continuing condensational growth is a crucial secondary transformation process. The freshly nucleated particles can grow into sizes where they can act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and further influence cloud and climate-relevant properties. Hence, the detailed knowledge on the formation mechanisms of new particles and their subsequent growth will help us to improve our understanding on the regional air pollution and global climate change. Recent-developed measurement techniques enable to explore atmospheric nucleation by measuring particles/clusters down to 1 nm. NPF events have been observed in a variety of atmospheric environments. Several methods including field observation, laboratory simulations and model calculations are implemented to investigate the nucleation mechanisms and growth properties. Good agreement between particle formation rates and gaseous sulfuric acid concentrations is observed, indicating that sulfuric acid is a key compnent in the atmospheric nucleation process. In addition, the low-volatile organic vapors are found to be involved in new particle formation. However, the huge variations of the particle formation and growth rates in diverse atmospheric environments suggest that a consistent picture on formation mechanisms of new particles does not achieve. Long-term continuous measurements of NPF events have been first performed in the urban atmosphere of Beijing since 2004. Up to now, NPF events have been observed in many different environments, including coastal area, high-elevation mountain, rural site as well as urban region in China. The current nucleation mechanisms are developed based on the observation in clean environment. Hence, whether it could well explain the NPF events occurred in the polluted atmosphere with strong oxidation capacity is a key issue to be addressed in further studies. This paper reviews the measurement techniques for investigating atmospheric new particle formation and growth, summarizes the observation results in various typical environments, introduces the current understanding of the nucleation mechanisms and discusses the main scientific questions that need further researches.

Abstract:Abstract. The role of low-volatility organic vapors in atmospheric new particle formation has been studied based on a data set of 17 nucleation events observed during the CAREBeijing 2008 campaign. The particle formation rates show good correlations with sulfuric acid and organic vapors implying that both play an important role in the atmospheric new particle formation. High correlation coefficients are observed in all investigated nucleation mechanisms. The best fit (R = 0.73, slope = 1.1) between the observed and modelled particle formation rates is achieved with the homogenous nucleation theory of sulfuric acid (both homomolecularly and hetermolecularly) with separate coefficients in J=KSA1[H2SO4]2+KSA2[H2SO4][Org]. The contributions of the sulfuric acid and the organics involving terms have been 43% and 57%, respectively. In addition, the higher particle formation rates are observed on polluted nucleation days, indicating the organic vapors should be involved in the new particle formation process in the polluted urban environment of Beijing with high background aerosol loading.

Abstract:A major fraction of atmospheric aerosol particles, which affect both air quality and climate, form from gaseous precursors in the atmosphere. Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs), formed by oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds, are known to participate in particle formation and growth. However, it is not well understood how they interact with atmospheric pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and sulfur oxides (SO x ) from fossil fuel combustion, as well as ammonia (NH3) from livestock and fertilizers. Here, we show how NO x suppresses particle formation, while HOMs, sulfuric acid, and NH3 have a synergistic enhancing effect on particle formation. We postulate a novel mechanism, involving HOMs, sulfuric acid, and ammonia, which is able to closely reproduce observations of particle formation and growth in daytime boreal forest and similar environments. The findings elucidate the complex interactions between biogenic and anthropogenic vapors in the atmospheric aerosol system.

Abstract:Formation of new atmospheric aerosol particles is a global phenomenon that has been observed to take place in even heavily-polluted environments. However, in all environments there appears to be a threshold value of the condensation sink (due to pre-existing aerosol particles) after which the formation rate of 3 nm particles is no longer detected. In China, new particle production has been observed at very high pollution levels (condensation sink about 0.1 s–1) in several megacities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing as well as in Pearl River Delta (PRD). Here we summarize the recent findings obtained from these studies and discuss the various implications these findings will have on future research and policy.

Abstract:In this paper we summarize recent experimental, theoretical and observational results on the formation and growth of atmospheric nanoparticles. During the last years significant progress has occurred to explain atmospheric nucleation and initial steps of the growth. Due to climatic and health effects of fine and ultrafine particles the formation and growth of new aerosol particles is of growing interest. The question “How and under which conditions does the formation of new atmospheric aerosol particles take place?” has exercised the minds of scientists since the time of John Aitken, who in the late 1880s built the first apparatus to measure the number of dust and fog particles. However, only during the last 15–20 years has the measurement technology developed to such a level that size distributions of nanometer-size particles and concentrations of gases participating in particle formation can be measured in the atmosphere. Also from a theoretical point of view atmospheric nucleation mechanisms have not been resolved: several mechanisms such as ion-induced (or ion mediated) nucleation, ternary and kinetic (barrier-less) nucleation have been suggested. In the most recent theory, the activation of existing neutral and/or ion clusters has been suggested.

Abstract:Significance Aerosol particles can form and grow by gas-to-particle conversion and eventually act as seeds for cloud droplets, influencing global climate. Volatile organic compounds emitted from plants are oxidized in the atmosphere, and the resulting products drive particle growth. We measure particle growth by oxidized biogenic vapors with a well-controlled laboratory setup over a wide range of tropospheric temperatures. While higher temperatures lead to increased reaction rates and concentrations of highly oxidized molecules, lower temperatures allow additional, but less oxidized, species to condense. We measure rapid growth over the full temperature range of our study, indicating that organics play an important role in aerosol growth throughout the troposphere. Our finding will help to sharpen the predictions of global aerosol models.
Molecular-level Insight into the Organic Aerosol Formation under the Interactions Between VOCs and Inorganic Sulfate and NOx

Abstract:Field observations were conducted in various environments, from polluted urban to clean marine atmospheres, to understand the organic aerosol formation under the influence of inorganic sulfate and NOx. Molecular compositions of organic aerosols were analyzed using an ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometer. The S-containing and N-containing organics are important fractions for SOA accumulation during pollution episodes or under high humidity conditions. To further investigate their formation pathways, organosulfates (OSs) and nitro-aromatics (NACs) were quantified using HPLC-MS. Particulate OSs were formed via acid-catalyzed aqueous-phase reactions in the presence of sulfate aerosols. When sulfate dominated the accumulation of secondary inorganic aerosols, OS formation would be obviously promoted as the increasing of acidic sulfate aerosols, aerosol liquid water and acidity. The formation of biogenic OSs and their notable roles in organic aerosols calls for elaboration in regions with substantial biogenic-anthropogenic interactions and over marine areas with high biological activity and high SST. Anthropogenic NOx influences the SOA formation via nighttime NO3-initiated oxidation of monoterpene, as well as involving in the oxidation of toluene and benzene. As the increasing of NOx concentration levels, the formation of nitrooxy-OSs or NACs shift from NOx-limited to NOx-excess regimes. Transported anthropogenic NOx from continental outflows would obviously enhance the nitrooxy-OSs formation in organic aerosols over marginal seas.

Abstract: Generation, investigation and manipulation of nanostructured materials are of fundamental and practical importance for several disciplines including materials sciences and medicine. Recently, atmospheric new particle formation in the nanometer size range has been found to be a global phenomenon (Kulmala et al. 2004). The processes related to nanomaterials and atmospheric nanoparticles are at least similar and in some cases even identical. However, the detailed mechanisms for nucleation and nanoparticle formation are mostly unknown, largely depending on the incapability to generate and measure nanoparticles in a controlled way. In recent experiments an organic vapour (n-propanol) condenses on molecular ions as well as charged and uncharged inorganic nanoparticles via initial activation by heterogeneous nucleation (Winkler et al. 2008). In these experiments a smooth transition in activation behaviour as a function of size has been found, and activation did occur well before the onset of homogeneous nucleation. Furthermore, nucleation enhancement for charged particles and a significant negative sign preference were quantitatively detected.

Abstract:Aerosol particles formed in the atmosphere are important to the Earth's climate system due to their ability to affect cloud properties. At present, little is known about the atmospheric chemistry responsible for the growth of newly formed aerosol particles to climate‐relevant sizes. Here combining detailed aerosol measurements with a theoretical framework we found that depending on the gaseous precursors and size of the newly formed particles, the growth was dominated by either sulfuric acid accompanied by ammonium or organic compounds originating in either biogenic emissions or savannah fires. The contribution of sulfuric acid was larger during the early phases of the growth, but in clean conditions organic compounds dominated the growth from 1.5 nm up to climatically relevant sizes. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that in polluted environments the contribution of sulfuric acid to the growth may have been underestimated by up to a factor of 10.

Abstract:Atmospheric nanoparticle growth is a critical bridge between aerosol to clouds and climate. However, current mechanisms for nanoparticle growth are not yet fully understood due to unknown size-resolved chemical composition during the growth process. Here, we present comprehensive field measurements of the size-resolved chemical composition of the atmospheric nanoparticle growth in the size range from 10 to 100 nm using a custom-made Nanoparticle Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (NPCIMS). The typical chemical compositions of nanoparticles are quantified in both positive and negative ion modes during growth processes after sensitivity calibration. The quantification results for chemical compositions show that CHO organics account for ∼80% of the newly formed particle in the growth process with diameters from 10 to 25 nm. However, the nitrate component is rarely observed during the nanoparticle growth under size-resolved mode (10–25 nm), indicating the little contribution of the nitrate component to growth at diameters below 25 nm. Different from the contribution of aminium salts to nanoparticle growth according to the previous urban observations in Mexico, the newly formed particle growth in urban Beijing is dominated by ammonium, sulfate, and organic components in the size-resolved modes (10–25 nm) in springtime.
