Abstract:New monodisperse starburst oligofluorene derivatives, which contain 5,5',10,10',15,15'-hexahexyltruxene as the central core linked with oligo(9,9'-dihexylfluorene) as the arms through ethynylene bridge are presented. All these compounds were prepared via Sonogashira reaction. Their molecular structures were confirmed by NMR, MALDI-TOF MS spectrometry and elementary analysis. The fluorescence spectra showed that introduction of ethynylene linker showed that the optical properties of the starburst oligofluorenes were modified. Both the absorption and the fluorescence peaks were found to be red-shifted.

Abstract:A series of monodisperse, well-defined, star-shaped truxene derivatives bearing oligo(fluorene ethynylene) (OFE) branches were constructed through a convergent synthetic strategy. The radius of the largest molecule TOFE4 was up to about 4.5nm. Linear OFE branches with different length were first constructed in high yields alternately using the Sonogashira cross-coupling and propargyl alcohol deprotection reaction. The detailed investigation of their photophysical properties in solution and in film indicated that these star-shaped molecules exhibited obvious size effects on their distinct photoluminescence and electroluminescence behaviors. Furthermore, good performances were achieved from the fabrication of double-layer organic light-emitting diodes using these star-shaped molecules as active materials.

Abstract:We present herein a novel design and the efficient synthesis towards a "homogeneous" starburst fluorene system based on the novel 2,3,7,8,12,13-hexaaryltruxene scaffold. Controlled microwave heating provides a facile and powerful approach for each step in the synthesis of these bulky materials with large steric hindrance, suggesting an avenue to access structurally well-defined complex organic semiconductors (OSCs) rapidly and conveniently with high yield and purity. The resulting materials exhibited good thermal stability and an excellent glassy structure as revealed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as well as wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) studies. Moreover, compared with their corresponding three-arm-substituted counterparts T1-T4, the introduction of the ortho substituents around the truxene core in Tr1-Tr4 results in significant blueshifts (of 7-24 nm) of the absorption maxima lambda(max) and higher energy optical gaps (E(g)). Comparative studies with corresponding linear, rod-shaped oligofluorene counterparts (OFX) have revealed that the longest para-conjugated segment in the TrX (X=1-4) structures plays the dominant role in determining their electronic properties. UV/Vis data and cyclic voltammetry (CV) investigations have indicated that there is little electronic interaction between the arms, even for the shortest armed oligomer Tr1. A clear linear relationship of both 1/lambda(max) and E(g) with the inverse of (n+1) for these branched systems was found. Our findings highlight a novel molecular design comprising an ortho-substituted, multiarmed architecture that would allow the introduction of isotropic physical and/or mechanical properties, while at the same time maintaining most of the important electronic properties of the rod-shaped constituents of a fully conjugated system.

Abstract:A series of starburst materials (T1-T3) based on a pyrene core with four oligofluorene arms of different length have been synthesized and characterized. The starburst materials show good film forming ability and sky blue fluorescence. Electroluminescent devices take on a stable blue emission and the device performance increases with an increase in arm length. The single-layered device made of T3 has a maximum brightness of over 2 700 cd. m(-2) and a maximum current efficiency of 1.75 cd . A(-1), which is among the best in starburst material devices. The morphology of T1-T3 has been studied by atomic force microscopy. The starburst oligofluorenes with different arm lengths show a distinctive texture, which indicates the size dependent morphology of the starburst materials.

Abstract:A facile approach to soluble star-shaped oligothiophene-functionalized polycyclic aromatics based on truxene is developed in this Communication. The Suzuki coupling reactions afford the thiophene-containing polycyclic aromatics with long branches (about 2.1 nm length from the heart to the periphery) from truxene precursor with excellent yields. The unsubstituted alpha-positions of thiophene rings allow for efficient halogenation and for further functionalization. The investigation of proton NMR spectra indicates that the hexahexyl groups efficiently prevent the self-association through the arene-arene pi-stacking. Chemical shifts belonging to methylene groups move more upfield than do those of methyl groups. These chemical shift values (about 0.5-0.6 ppm) are quite lower than those of normal methyl and methylene groups. We also prepare a dendritic hyperbranched polymer P1 through FeCl3 mediated oxidative polymerizations. The photophysical properties of all compounds possessing good symmetry are investigated by UV-vis and emission measurement.

Abstract:Novel starburst triazatruxenes functionalized with six N-phenylated carbazole units have been synthesized and characterized. Good yields and high purity were readily obtained via an optimized microwave-enhanced six-fold Suzuki Coupling methodology. High thermal stability and good amorphous properties as well as deep blue emissions (423-434 nm) were demonstrated. The introduction of six-substituted triazatruxene scaffolds could provide a new guideline tor exploring novel solution-processable amorphous materials with dual functions for light-emitting and/or hole-transporting applications.

Abstract:Two series of novel alternating polyfluorene copolymers containing 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1',2'-c]fluorene (truxene) moiety have been prepared through the Pd(0)-catalyzed Suzuki polymerization. The structure and purity of desired polymers is fully characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-vis, and photoluminescent spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, elemental analyses, and TGA/DSC. The absorption and PL spectra of all polymers both in solutions and in thin films exhibit similar behaviors. For example, in solutions, the absorption spectra peak at about 360 nm, and the PL spectra show a maximum at about 390 nm with a shoulder at 412 nm. The introducing of the truxene moiety into polyfluorene and the hyperbranched and zigzag type molecular structures significantly reduce aggregation formation and enhance the thermal spectral stability of the desired polymers. They exhibit good solubility in common organic solvents as well as facile film forming properties. Bright blue emission is observed in both solution and solid states under UV excitation. The investigation of thermal spectral stability reveals that the long-wavelength emission upon thermal treatment usually observed in polyfluorene has been effectively reduced in our polymers.

Abstract:[Graphics] A series of novel extended pi-conjugated twin molecules based on 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-alpha;1',2'-c]fluorene (truxene) have been prepared via Pd(0)-catalyzed Suzuki coupling, Sonogashira coupling, and McMurry reactions, respectively. 9,9'-Spirobifluorenylene, ethynylene, and vinylene groups as the bridge are introduced to connect both truxene moieties to understand the effect of the large steric chromophores on the properties of the desired materials. The investigation of optical properties of TM1-3 by UV-vis and photoluminescent spectroscopy demonstrates that the optical properties of the twin molecules are strongly affected by the pi-linkages.

Abstract:Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on oligothiophene-functionalized truxene derivatives have been fabricated for use as novel star-shaped organic semiconductors in solution-processible organic electronics. The electronic and optical properties of compounds 1-3, with increasing numbers of thiophene rings at each of the three branches, have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction measurements, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The results show that with a stepwise increase of the thiophene rings at every branch, a transition from a polycrystalline to an amorphous state is observed. The characteristics of compounds 1, 2, and 3 used for OFETs exhibit a significant difference. The mobility depends greatly on the morphology in the solid state, and decreases in going from 1 to 3. Mobilities up to 1.03 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and an on/off ratio of about 10(3) for compound 1 have been achieved; these are the highest values for star-shaped organic semiconductors used for OFETs so far. All the results demonstrate that the truxene core of the oligothiophene-functionalized truxene derivatives not only extends the pi-delocalized system, but also leads to high mobilities for the compounds.
Star-shaped oligo(p-phenylene)-functionalized truxenes as blue-light-emitting materials: synthesis and the structure–property relationship

Abstract:In this contribution, we described a strategy to prepare a series of well-defined, blue-light-emitting materials with truxene unit as the core and oligo(p-phenylene) (from one to four phenyl units) as the branches. The Suzuki coupling reactions between truxene bromide derivatives and phenylboronic acid or 1,1′-biphenyl-4-boronic acid catalyzed by Pd(0) afforded the desired compounds Tr-1-Ph, Tr-2-Ph, Tr-3-Ph and Tr-4-Ph. With stepwise increases of the benzene rings, the desired molecules exhibited exceptional photophysical properties as well as increasing thermal stability. Tgs increased from 39°C for Tr-1-Ph to 192°C for Tr-4-Ph. The absorption and the emission maximum peaks of these four compounds were red-shifted from the ultraviolet to the blue region with the increase of effective conjugation length. All results demonstrated that the physical properties were facilely tuned by connecting different types and different conjugated lengths to C-2, C-7, and C-12 positions of the truxene core.
Topological arrangement of fluorenyl-substituted carbazole triads and starbursts: Synthesis and optoelectronic properties

Abstract:A series of fluorenyl-substituted carbazole linear triads and starbursts were synthesized by the Suzuki and Sonogashira coupling reactions. In these compounds, a fluorene unit is connected to the 1,8; 2,7; or 3,6 positions of the central carbazole ring to form linear triads or linked to the 1,3,6,8 positions to form starbursts. The optoelectronic properties of these different functionalized carbazole materials were investigated, and light-emitting devices based on starbursts were constructed and characterized. For the linear triads, we observed that the 2,7-position substitution is more efficient in extending the conjugation with the sacrifice of triplet energy. Moreover, the theoretical calculations predict that substitution at the 1,8 positions gives a high triplet energy of 2.71 eV, indicating that 1,8 substitution is an effective way to design high energy level host materials. Tetrasubstituted starbursts show a much lower HOMO and band gap than that of linear triads. It was interesting to observe that 4FCz shows a deep blue emission with high triplet energy. Moreover, 4FECz shows the lowest LUMO energy level and a very low hole reorganization energy, indicating its good hole transporting property.

Abstract:Two 3D monodisperse oligofluorenes with non-conjugated triphenylamine-based cores have been synthesized by Friedel-Crafts copolycondensation reaction. The oligomers, PF3-TPA and PF3-TPA(3), consist of three fluorene pentamer arms that are connected non-conjugately through a triphenylamine (TPA) and 1,3,5-tris(triphenylamino)benzene core (TPA(3)), respectively, at the 9-position of the central fluorene of the pentafluorene arms. The coplanar structures of the cores and the linkages at the centre of the pentafluorene arms produced a 3D structure of oligomers. This specific structure efficiently retarded the crystallization tendencies of the pentafluorene arms and gave the materials completely amorphous morphological structures. Both oligomers emit deep-blue fluorescence with high efficiencies in thin films (phi(pl-film) = 67 % for PF3-TPA(3) and 86% for PF3-TPA). The introduction of triphenylamine units into the core promoted the hole-injection ability while not obviously scarificing the electron-injection ability of the oligomers. The multi-layer devices ITO/PEDOT-PSS/PF3-TPA(3) and PF3-TPA/TPBI/LiF/Al were fabricated to investigate the electroluminescence (EL) properties of the two oligomers. Both oligomers showed a low turn-on voltage of 4 V. The luminances reached 1946 cd/m(2) at 7.5 V in the PF3-TPA(3) device and 1055 cd/m(2) at 8 V in the PF3-TPA device. The EL efficiencies at this luminance were 1.63 and 1.57 cd/A, respectively.

Abstract:Two new star-shaped molecules 1 and 2 containing a triphenylamine/benzene moiety its the central core and three 2,4-dicyano-3-diethylamino-9,9-diethylfluorene moieties as the peripheral functional groups were synthesized and characterized. Charge transfer properties for these Compounds were observed in photophysical experiments due to their D-A molecular structure. Compound 1 presented dual fluorescence in high polar solvents. Moreover, these compounds exhibited moderate fluorescence and high thermal stabilities, indicating their potential application to blue light emitting materials.

Abstract:Rational molecular design has led to the achievement of beta-conformations of terfluorenes that are usually difficult for oligoalkylfluorenes with less than 5 repeat units. Herein, under the guideline of synergistically molecular attractor-repulsor theory (SMART), we design four models of terfluorenes with the possibility of inducing beta-conformation in the terfluorene 2,2'-(spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene]-2,7-diyl) bis(9-(4-(octyloxy) phenyl)-fluoren-9-ol) (2O8-DPFOH-SFX) by manipulating the cooperative effects of steric hindrance, hydrogen bonding (HB) and van der Waals (vdW) forces after thermal annealing. For terfluorene 2O8-DPFOH-SFX, the two isomers, raceme and mesomer, with two side chains residing on the two sides and on the same side of the fluorene backbone, respectively, have different packing styles and hence different optical properties: only the raceme isomer could induce the formation of beta-conformation. Due to the steric pairing effect of side chains on both sides and the cooperative interaction of the middle spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene] (SFX) group, the racemes precisely interlace with each other and tend to adopt D-shaped stacking, which favors a planar p-conjugated structure for the raceme. This is rationalized by the larger content of planar conformations in the 2O8-DPFOH-SFX raceme, according to molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the condensed phase. Thus, oligofluorenes with definite molecular structure can be considered as notable materials for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships for optical and electronics applications.

Abstract:A series of highly fluorescent, pyrene-modified oligo(2,7-fluorene ethynylene)s were synthesized and fully characterized. Different emissions were observed between pyrene-end-capped and pyrene-centered oligo(2,7-fluorene ethynylene)s. Moreover, these oligomers were applied to fabricate organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and bright blue or green electroluminescence (EL) with good device performances was achieved in multilayer OLEDs. These pyrene-modified oligo(2,7-fluorene ethynylene)s could be used as optoelectronics materials or models to investigate fluorescent structure - property relationship of fluorene derivatives.
