Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of early enteral immunonutrition on intestine immune function in septic rats. Methods After sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture(CLP),20 male SD rats were randomly assigned into two groups, with 10 rats in each group.EN group was given conventional enteral nutrition with a liquid formula.EIN group was given glutamine and arginine-enriched enteral nutrition. The relative proportions of energy in both groups were 82% carbohydrate,3% fat and 15% protein with a ratio of calorie to nitrogen of 150∶1.The energy requirement of each rat was calculated according to 732.2 kJ·kg-1·d-1.Rats received isocaloric, isonitrogenous, and isovolumic enteral nutrition in both groups. All rats were killed after continuous feeding for 7 days.Entire intestine was collected and total cell count in Peyer's patches was determined. The numbers of T and B cells in Peyer's patches were measured by flow cytometry. The intestinal immunoglobulin A(IgA) levels were detected by ELISA.Result Total cell yield, numbers of T and B cells in Peyer's patches, and intestinal IgA levels in EIN group were significantly higher than those in EN group(P0.05).Conclusion Early enteral immunonutrition can improve intestine immune function in septic rats.
