Abstract:Boletus are wild edible mushrooms that are consumed worldwide for their appealing taste and abundant production. The aim of this review was to summarize and discuss the characteristics, effects of food processing and application of Boletus worldwide. A better understanding of Boletus nutritional profiles with high carbohydrate and protein, low fat and energy. Volatile (odor compounds) and nonvolatile (free amino acids, 5'-nucleotide and nucleoside, free sugars, organic acids and umami peptides) compounds together contribute to the flavor of Boletus. Varies bioactive substances such as phenols, flavonoids, polysaccharides, tocopherols, lectins and pigment, have also been identified in Boletus, showing wide spectrum biological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumor, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, antihyperglycemic and hypotensive activities. In addition, drying, storage and cooking influenced the physical, chemical, sensory properties and biological activities of Boletus. The application of Boletus was focused on food dietary supplement, enhancement of food nutrition and function, indicating Boletus can be further developed as a functional food for human health. Further research suggestions focus on the mechanism of bioactive substances, the novel umami peptides, and the digestion and absorption of Boletus.

Abstract:The morphology, ecology, and phylogenetic relationships of specimens of the family Boletaceae from subtropical and tropical China were investigated. Four species, Butyriboletushuangnianlaii, Lanmaoamacrocarpa, Neoboletusmultipunctatus, and Sutoriussubrufus, are new to science. Chalciporusradiatus and Caloboletusxiangtoushanensis are redescribed. Caloboletusguanyui is proposed to replace Boletusquercinus Hongo, an illegitimate later homonym. The recently described Tylopiluscallainus is synonymized with the Japanese Boletusvirescens, and the new combination T.virescens (Har. Takah. & Taneyama) N.K. Zeng et al. is proposed. Moreover, Neoboletus is treated as an independent genus based on evidence from morphology and molecular phylogenetic data in the present study, and many previously described taxa of Sutorius are recombined into Neoboletus: N.ferrugineus (G. Wu et al.) N.K. Zeng et al., N.flavidus (G. Wu & Zhu L. Yang) N.K. Zeng et al., N.hainanensis (T.H. Li & M. Zang) N.K. Zeng et al., N.obscureumbrinus (Hongo) N.K. Zeng et al., N.rubriporus (G. Abstract:Fungi of the family Boletaceae are of great importance in both ecology and economy. Our previous molecular phylogenetic studies have shown this family to have an extremely high species diversity in China. To further document the Chinese boletes, morphological studies and phylogenetic analyses were conducted including species of Boletaceae from China and other parts of the world. The results indicate that seven subfamily-level major clades and 62 generic clades can be retrieved, 52 of which are found in China. Furthermore, 100 species (comprising 32 genera) common in China are illustrated and described here in detail. Among them, four genera and 46 species are new to science, and 26 new combinations are proposed. To interpret the species concepts consistently, epitypes for five species are designated based on collections made from or near the type localities. Notes on eight extralimital species are also provided. Among the species reported here, most of the species are known only from East Asia. Only Leccinum scabrum (Bull.) Gray, Porphyrellus porphyrosporus (Fr. & Hök) E.-J. Gilbert and Tylopilus felleus (Bull.) P. Karst. are widely distributed in the Holarctic, and Buchwaldoboletus lignicola (Kallenb.) Pilát; Strobilomyces strobilaceus (Scop.) Berk. are in Eurasia; while Aureoboletus mirabilis (Murrill) Halling, Harrya chromapes (Frost) Halling et al., and Sutorius eximius (Peck) Halling et al. are found throughout East Asia-North America based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidences.

Abstract:Boletus spp., the edible mushrooms distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America, have been widely used as food and medicinal ingredients worldwide. Bioactive polysaccharides are highly abundant in Boletus spp., as demonstrated by modern phytochemical studies. The isolation, chemical properties, and bioactivities of polysaccharides from Boletus spp. have long been attracted by academics worldwide. However, there is still a lack of systematic tracking of research progress on Boletus polysaccharides (BPs), which is essential for researchers to understand their potential and gain a deeper insight into their functional mechanisms. In this review, we summarized the recent development of BPs, including the extraction and purification methods, physiochemical and structural features, bioactivities and functional mechanisms, the structure–activity relationship, and the potential applications. This review aims to provide researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the current progress and potential of BPs to assist their further investigations.

Abstract:The family Boletaceae primarily represents ectomycorrhizal fungi, which play an essential ecological role in forest ecosystems. Although the Boletaceae family has been subject to a relatively global and comprehensive history of work, novel species and genera are continually described. During this investigation in northern China, many specimens of boletoid fungi were collected. Based on the study of their morphology and phylogeny, four new species, Butyriboletus pseudoroseoflavus, Butyriboletus subregius, Tengioboletus subglutinosus, and Suillellus lacrymibasidiatus, are introduced. Morphological evidence and phylogenetic analyses of the single or combined dataset (ITS or 28S, rpb1, rpb2, and tef1) confirmed these to be four new species. The evidence and analyses indicated the new species' relationships with other species within their genera. Detailed descriptions, color photographs, and line drawings are provided. The species of Butyriboletus in China were compared in detail and the worldwide keys of Tengioboletus and Suillellus were given.

Abstract:Porcini mushrooms (Boletus sect. Boletus) have both economic and ecological importance. Recent molecular phylogenetic study has uncovered rich species diversity of this group of fungi from China. In this study, the Chinese porcini were characterized by both morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence. 15 species were recognized, including nine new species, namely B. botryoides, B. fagacicola, B. griseiceps, B. monilifer, B. sinoedulis, B. subviolaceofuscus, B. tylopilopsis, B. umbrinipileus and B. viscidiceps. Three previously described species, viz. B. bainiugan, B. meiweiniuganjun and B. shiyong, were revised, and B. meiweiniuganjun is treated as a synonym of B. bainiugan. A key to the Chinese porcini mushrooms was provided.

Abstract:Boletus orientialbus is described as a new species from Fujian Province, a subtropical region of China. It is morphologically characterized by its white basidioma with a white and unchanging context, white pores becoming yellow with age, a reticulate stipe, and ellipsoid to elongate basidiospores. A detailed description, color photos of fresh basidiomata, and a line-drawing of microscopic features are presented.

Abstract:The morphology, ecology, and phylogenetic relationships of species of Crocinoboletus (Boletaceae, Boletales) were investigated. One species, C. pinetorum, new to science, is characterized by a pileus yellowish orange to pale orange in color, surface of pileus and stipe usually unchanging in color when bruised, shorter basidiospores measuring 9.5–11.5 × 4–5 (–5.5) μm, and its association with pine trees. Information on C. laetissimus and C. rufoaureus is updated. A key to all known taxa of Crocinoboletus is also provided.

Abstract:Boletus sinopulverulentus, a new species discovered in Shaanxi Province (central China), is formally described and illustrated. A detailed morphological description is provided and accompanied by line-drawings of the main anatomical features, a colour illustration of fresh material in habitat and the pertinent supporting molecular data (ITS sequences analysis). Boletus sinopulverulentus belongs to the B. pulverulentus species complex. The diagnostic traits of the species allied to the new taxon are also discussed for comparison. Finally, based on molecular analysis the taxonomy of Boletus and Xerocomus is briefly discussed.

Abstract:Analysis the contents of crude protein,crude fat,mine elements et al.in Boletus speciosus Frost,Boletus Calopus Fr,Boletus edulis Bull Fr.,Boletus tomentipes1 by atomic absorption method,colorimetry.The results showed the contents of crude protein,crude fat,total sugar and crude fiber 4.38%~5.42%,2.47%~3.07%,1.26%~3.85%,1.23%~1.56% in the 4 kinds of fresh Boletus sp.respectively.The contents of iron,zinc,calcium were 19.62~37.96mg/kg,6.53~9.67mg/kg,146.23 ~298.02 mg/kg respectively.The contents of total Arsenic could not be tested.The contents of total mercury,lead,cadmium were 0.06~0.73mg/kg,0.45~0.62 mg/kg,0.075~0.105 mg/kg,respectively.The conclusion was that the 4 kinds of fresh Boletus sp contained rich nutritious components,but the contents of total mercury in Boletus speciosus Frost,Boletus Calopus Fr were quite high,this should be concerned.

Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety

Abstract:The production of macrofungi (mushrooms) as well as their economic value have been steadily increasing globally. The use of functional foods, dietary supplements, and traditional medicines derived from macrofungi is increasing as they have numerous health benefits as well as abundant nutrients. Macrofungi are diverse with complex and highly varied growth conditions and bioactive constituents, most macrofungal resources have not yet been fully explored and applicated, leading to an urgent need for appropriate strategies to address the problem. Increasing attention has been paid to the macrofungal cultivation and application, in particular, potential prebiotics. Herein, the present review comprehensively summarizes recent progress in the cultivation, newly identified bioactive constituents, and their effects on gut microbiota as well as the potential ways in which they affect human health. Moreover, the macrofungal food development is discussed to improve food nutritional value and change the quality characteristics of food. Finally, the review addresses consumer safety concerns and the prospective genetic manipulation of macrofungi. We hope that this review can provide a comprehensive research reference for ensuring the safety and efficacy, along with maximizing the value and profitability of macrofungi production.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the structural characteristics and in vitro fermentation patterns of polysaccharides from Boletus mushrooms. Polysaccharides were solubilized from fruit bodies of selected mushrooms Boletus auripes, B. bicolor, and B. griseus using subcritical water extraction. Boletus polysaccharides were characterized for their general physicochemical pattern, constituent monosaccharides and molecular weight. A simulated in vitro fermentation model was used to study the utilization of Boletus polysaccharides by the gut microbiota and their consequent modulation of microbial communities. Results showed that the main constituent monosaccharides of Boletus polysaccharides were glucose, galactose and mannose, followed by fucose, xylose and rhamnose, with glucose being the most abundant. The polysaccharides from B. bicolor and B. griseus exhibited a relatively high proportion of galactose and mannose, respectively. Boletus polysaccharides exhibited a wide range of molecular weights (5 kDa to 2000 kDa), which covered multiple polysaccharide populations, but the proportions of these populations varied among the samples. Boletus polysaccharides were gradually utilized by the human fecal microbiota, promoting the production of SCFAs. Boletus polysaccharides contributed to a healthier gut microbiota composition by increasing the relative abundance of beneficial bacterial genera such as Bacteroides and Faecalibacterium and reducing the relative abundance of harmful bacterial genera such as Sutterella and Escherichia-Shigella. B. bicolor polysaccharides showed better fermentability and prebiotic effects than the other Boletus polysaccharide groups. Therefore, the consumption of select Boletus mushrooms, particularly B. bicolor, could be a potential approach to obtain polysaccharides for microbiota modulation and to support gut health.

Abstract:Polysaccharides from the species of Boletaceae (Boletales, Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) are economically significant to both functional foods and medicinal industries. The crude polysaccharide from Butyriboletus pseudospeciosus (BPP) was prepared, and its physicochemical properties were characterized through the use of consecutive experimental apparatus, and its impact on the gut microbiota of Kunming mice was evaluated. Analyses of the structure characteristics revealed that BPP was mainly composed of Man, Glc, and Gal, possessing the pyranose ring and β/α-glycosidic linkages. TG analysis exhibited that BPP had great heat stability. The SEM observation performed demonstrated that BPP appeared with a rough, dense, and porous shape. Through the BPP intervention, the serum and fecal biochemical index in mice can be improved obviously (p < 0.05). The abundance of beneficial microbiota in the BPP-treated group was significantly increased, while the abundance of harmful microbiota was significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Based on the Tax4Fun, we also revealed the relationship between the species of gut microbiota and showed that the high dose of BPP has significantly changed the functional diversities compared with those in other groups (p < 0.05). The results suggest that B. pseudospeciosus could serve as potential functional food or medicine.

Abstract:Phlebopus portentosus (Berk. and Broome) Boedijn is a favored wild edible mushroom in the Xishuangbanna region, Yunnan, China and Northern Thailand. It belongs to Boletinellaceae family and is known as “black bolete”. Its ecological habits and biotrophy are very complicated. It can be saprobic and successfully cultivated in mushroom house conditions. More often it grows closely with many plants, but is not mycorrhizal fungus. It forms a tripartite association with root mealy bugs and plants. The fungus produces special fungus-insect gall with the soil mealy bugs, which is a symbiotic association between these two creatures. The gall grows on plant roots with parasitic tendency. This paper is a compact report of the findings, including taxonomy, ecology, economic and cultivation of this mushroom.
