Abstract:This paper introduced the applications of nano flame retardants in composites,especially in resin-matrix composites and analyzed the types and characteristics of nano flame retardants with high efficiency,low smoke,low toxicity and good physical properties.The paper also reviewed the current status of layered silicates,carbon nanotubes,polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes and graphene nanosheets at home and abroad.Moreover,the future research directions in this issue were prospected.

Abstract:The new developments and major results in the fields of flame retarding polymeric nanocomposites are reviewed. The incorporation of flame-retardants in a polymer can avoid a risk of combustion of the polymer in a fire.However,conventional flame retardants,such as halogenated,phosphorous,or metallic additives,have a number of negative attributes.For example,they usually impact the mechanical properties of the polymer or promote the polymer to produce much fume.The nanoparticles of flame-retardants have many advantages,such as great efficiency,functionality,reduced fuming,environmental friendliness and low loading,which promote the application of them in the polymeric composites.Therefore,it is expected that these nanocomposites exhibit the unusual combination of reduced flammability,improved physical properties,and thermostable properties and so on.

Abstract:The progress of flame retarded polymer nanocomposites and coatings in China over the past decades are described in this review. Emphasis on flammability performance of polymer nanocomposites containing nanofillers, mainly layered inorganic compounds, nanofibers and nanoparticles, combined with conventional flame retardant additives are addressed based on the open literature. Polymeric coatings with improved flame retardancy prepared using a wide variety of additives and UV‐curing technology are also introduced. Derived from this research, the combination of multiple methods and technologies including catalyst and nanotechnology, is predicted to have a high probability to enhance char formation and improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials. Abstract:The worldwide demand for green and sustainable materials has given rise to production of composites from raw natural fibers and polymer matrices. In the past few decades, natural fibers have been widely used in polymer composites owing to their superior properties, which are comparable to or provide more advantages than those of synthetic fibers and traditional glass fibers in terms of mechanical properties, light weight, low cost, and minimal environmental and health hazards. However, the high combustibility of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites (NFPCs) restricts their diverse applications, especially in engineering fields. To improve the flame retardancy of NFPCs, many researchers have made numerous efforts, such as incorporating traditional flame retardants or nanofillers and flame retardant-modified natural fibers into NFPCs and by applying non-flammable polymeric matrices in various fields. This chapter aims at summarizing the development of flame-retardant NFPCs based on open publications involving the types and properties of natural fibers and the recent progress in flame-retardant NFPCs based on different natural fibers and polymeric matrices. In addition, the flame-retardant mechanisms of the combination of natural fibers and flame retardants or nanoadditives in polymers have also been discussed. Finally, promising industrial applications of flame-retardant NFPCs will be discussed.

Abstract:Application of polymer products is almost universal; however, the flammability of these hydrocarbon-based materials needs attention. Flame retardant additives have been studied for reducing the flame spread in a fire involving polymers. Polymer nanocomposites is a relatively new class of flame retardant material that has shown improved thermal stability and flammability properties and therefore, have received attention from the scientific community. This paper provides an overview of different types of flame retardant additives and their mechanisms, especially polymer nanocomposites. The synthesis and characterization techniques for analyzing the morphology, thermal and flammability properties of polymer nanocomposites have also been discussed. The overall objective is to provide a summary of the application of polymer nanocomposites in the field of flame retardancy and associated techniques to study these materials.

Abstract:Flame-retardant polymer nanocomposites exhibiting remarkably improved flame-retardant and environmentally friendly properties have been widely utilized to replace traditional halogenated fire retardants. In this review, flame retardant mechanisms of polymer nanocomposites such as barrier effect, char formation, three-dimensional nanostructure, and radical trapping, are discussed to explain how nanomaterials can be incorporated in a polymer to reduce the polymer's flammability. Properties that are critical in governing the flame-retardant mechanisms of polymer nanocomposites are discussed in this review. Specifically, category, surface property, and concentration of nanomaterials are critical in affecting flame-retardant properties of polymer nanocomposites and are reviewed in detail. Nanocomposite categories, especially, silicates (clays), inorganic hydroxides, carbonaceous materials, metal oxides, polysilsequioxanes, and their combinations are well described. The use of synergism and surface modification of nanomaterials are important strategies for optimizing flame retardancy of polymer nanocomposites. The peak heat-release rate (HRR), the most important parameter for predicting fire hazard, is widely involved in this review. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:Polymer materials are ubiquitous in daily life. While polymers are often convenient and helpful, their properties often obscure the fire hazards they may pose. Therefore, it is of great significance in terms of safety to study the flame retardant properties of polymers while still maintaining their optimal performance. Current literature shows that although traditional flame retardants can satisfy the requirements of polymer flame retardancy, due to increases in product requirements in industry, including requirements for durability, mechanical properties, and environmental friendliness, it is imperative to develop a new generation of flame retardants. In recent years, the preparation of modified two-dimensional nanomaterials as flame retardants has attracted wide attention in the field. Due to their unique layered structures, two-dimensional nanomaterials can generally improve the mechanical properties of polymers via uniform dispersion, and they can form effective physical barriers in a matrix to improve the thermal stability of polymers. For polymer applications in specialized fields, different two-dimensional nanomaterials have potential conductivity, high thermal conductivity, catalytic activity, and antiultraviolet abilities, which can meet the flame retardant requirements of polymers and allow their use in specific applications. In this review, the current research status of two-dimensional nanomaterials as flame retardants is discussed, as well as a mechanism of how they can be applied for reducing the flammability of polymers.

Abstract:In recent years, nanocarbon materials have attracted the interest of researchers due to their excellent properties. Nanocarbon-based flame retardant polymer composites have enhanced thermal stability and mechanical properties compared with traditional flame retardant composites. In this article, the unique structural features of nanocarbon-based materials and their use in flame retardant polymeric materials are initially introduced. Afterwards, the flame retardant mechanism of nanocarbon materials is described. The main discussions include material components such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene (in preparing resins), elastomers, plastics, foams, fabrics, and film–matrix materials. Furthermore, the flame retardant properties of carbon nanomaterials and their modified products are summarized. Carbon nanomaterials not only play the role of a flame retardant in composites, but also play an important role in many aspects such as mechanical reinforcement. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for future development of carbon nanomaterials in flame-retardant polymeric materials are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Flame retardant polymeric nanocomposites have received extensive attention over last decades because of their exceptional flame retardancy and mechanical performances. Despite these great advancements, there remains an urgent lack of a comprehensive review on the design, performances, applications and challenges of these polymeric nanocomposites. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art design and performances of polymeric nanocomposites. Substantial emphasis is placed on the combination effect between nanomaterials with variable dimensions and scales, and/or conventional phosphorus-, nitrogen- and/or silicon- containing flame retardants. The combination of nanomaterials with different geometries and conventional flame retardants via either chemical or physical methods has enabled tunable flame retardancy and mechanical performances for the resultant polymeric nanocomposites. Flame retardant mechanisms of polymer nanocomposites are also discussed in detail. Although the multiple combination represents an innovative and effective strategy to create polymeric nanocomposites, many key challenges remain to be addressed. In response to these challenges, four fundamental design principles are proposed for creating flame retardant polymeric nanocomposites. Because of integrated flame retardancy, mechanical and other tunable performances, these advanced polymeric materials are expected to find potential applications in the fields of electric & electronic, furniture, automotive, building, aerospace, transport, etc.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as the potential flame retardant substances with proper flame retardancy. Despite their unique structural features and adjustable chemical composition, MOFs alone could hardly meet all the requirements of the commercial flame retardant applications. Recently, co-application of MOFs and inorganic or organic additives has been introduced as a novel approach to obtaining highly efficient flame retardant polymer nanocomposites. The synergistic effect of these additives can resolve the limitations of MOFs. This review addresses the flame retardant mechanism of MOFs, and their composites application and new prospects of MOFs to promote fire safety in polymers. This review focuses on the latest studies on MOFs as efficient flame retardant additives for diverse polymer composites and their impact on thermal stability and flame retardancy.

Abstract:Four kinds of nanocomposites such as antimony trioxide,aluminum hydroxide,magnesium hydroxide and layered silicate were reviewed.The changes of limiting oxygen index,peak heat release rate(PHRR) and tensile strength were analyzed.The results showed that as the size of inorganic nanochemicals decreased,the LOI increased,while the PHRR lowered down.With the usage of modifier,the flame retardant property and mechanical property ascended.In addition,the method of enwrapping could increase the flame retardance and mechanical property of nanocomposites greatly.

Abstract:Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Abstract:Currently, polymers are competing with metals and ceramics to realize various material characteristics, including mechanical and electrical properties. However, most polymers consist of organic matter, making them vulnerable to flames and high-temperature conditions. In addition, the combustion of polymers consisting of different types of organic matter results in various gaseous hazards. Therefore, to minimize the fire damage, there has been a significant demand for developing polymers that are fire resistant or flame retardant. From this viewpoint, it is crucial to design and synthesize thermally stable polymers that are less likely to decompose into combustible gaseous species under high-temperature conditions. Flame retardants can also be introduced to further reinforce the fire performance of polymers. In this review, the combustion process of organic matter, types of flame retardants, and common flammability testing methods are reviewed. Furthermore, the latest research trends in the use of versatile nanofillers to enhance the fire performance of polymeric materials are discussed with an emphasis on their underlying action, advantages, and disadvantages.

Abstract:An overview of recent developments of flame-retardant nylon 6 and nylon 66 is presented in this paper. The research of flame-retardant composites is mainly through adding flame-retardant elements to nylon molecules, which can be divided into physical addition and chemical addition. Each of these two methods has its advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, according to the different addition methods and flame-retardant mechanism of various flame-retardants, the flame-retardant properties of phosphorus flame-retardants, nitrogen flame-retardants, bio based flame-retardants and synergistic systems, as well as their effects on the mechanical properties of flame-retardant composites have been critically reviewed and summarized. This review will objectively explore and give new direction for the development of the flame-retardant nylon materials, which would be more accessible to the emerging field of materials science.

Abstract:Two-dimension (2D) layered inorganic nanomaterials have aroused enormous research interests in developing multi-functional polymer nanocomposites in the past few decades. In this review, we mainly focused on the utilization of layered inorganic compounds to improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials. We first discuss the relationships between the morphology of layered inorganic compounds/polymer nanocomposites and their flame retardant properties, as well as analytical techniques for characterizing the morphological features. Then various layered inorganic compounds, such as montmorillonite, layered double hydroxides, layered metal phosphate, graphene, molybdenum disulfide, and their flame retardant behaviours in a variety of polymer matrices are commented. We also summarize the flame retardant mechanisms of these layered inorganic compounds in polymer nanocomposites. Finally, an overview of potential applications for these nanocomposites associated with current challenges is summarized for development of these promising flame retardant nanocomposites.

Abstract:With the wide application of flammable polymer materials,flame retardant is used widely.At the same time,better flame resistance,higher compatibility and other characteristics of the flame retardant are required. Intumescent flame retardant has some advantages,such as high efficiency,low smoke and low toxicity,and has be-come an important development direction of flame retardant.Mechanism for flame retardancy and classification of ex-pandable flame retardant is introduced briefly,followed by a description of the state-of-the-art research progress of the intumescent flame retardant and the new technology of flame retardant production.In the end,problems of the current intumescent flame retardant research are pointed out,and advices for future development direction are also provided in this field.
