Abstract:In order to christianize China and Chinese people, Protestant missionaries to China in the late Qing Dynasty tried every means to preach the gospel of Christianity. For example, there were different flexible strategies respectively adopted by W.H. Medhurst, J.H. Taylor, and James Legge. Meanwhile, they at first adapted themselves to China. Among these different approaches, only the flexible style adopted by missionary-sinologist James Legge not only spoke highly of Chinese traditional thoughts and culture but also translated and interpreted Chinese classics to the western readers. Of course, in the sense of comparative philology and comparative religion, it made Chinese Classics further recognized by the field of the Western sinology.Among the five-volume Chinese Classics translated by Legge, each volume contains a preface regarding the reasons, methods, style and related things for translation. Functionally speaking, these prefaces constitute an organic part of Chinese Classics in content. Together with Chinese Classics, they witnessed how an English missionary-sinologist in the Victorian age came into contact with ancient classic Chinese culture and thoughts, and witnessed his approach to the cultural diversities. The approach was neither an attitude which colonists took towards the colonial culture nor an Orientalism adopted by a sinologist in the general sense, but a kind of intense thirst and great care not so commonly seen for cross-cultural communication beyond the era. Furthermore, the integrity of the academic style of Legge's translated version fully showed his intensive and extensive knowledge as a classicist and exegetist prior to his translation of Chinese Classics. The Chinese and Western generalization resulting from the process of interpreting and translating the comparative religions and comparative literatures has become effective reference sources which are beyond its native culture and any other simply cultural tradition.
